Hotel Osijek is the tallest building in Croatia's 4th largest city of Osijek. Located close to the border with Serbia, Osijek experienced large scale bombing by rebel Serbs nearby. Hotel Osijek was the base for foreign journalists covering the war in Eastern Croatia and it came under relentless attack. It was temporarily repaired after hostilities stopped.

Now that the war has long been over, Hotel Osijek is getting a much needed make over from its ugly, damaged and brutalist appearance. The city of Osijek is getting also a much needed make over in relation to a new public square ......

Le Meridien Moves Into Croatia

Global hotel group, Le Meridien Hotels & Resorts has added to its European portfolio following the announcement that it has signed a management agreement for a 381-bedroom hotel in Split on the Croatian Adriatic coast.

The hotel, formerly one of Croatia's most luxurious resorts, is currently closed for redevelopment and will re-open as a Le Meridien in early 2006.

The hotel will be the only internationally affiliated hotel within the area of Split, and the plan is to develop a fully integrated sea front resort destination offering three restaurants, four bars and 2,000 square metres of flexible meeting space - the largest conference space in Croatia.

There will be health and leisure facilities including indoor and outdoor pools, spa facilities, a private beach with water sports and two tennis courts. Also on site will be a casino, nightclub and medical centre.

Robert Riley, Le Meridien's chief executive officer said: "This hotel project represents a fantastic opportunity for Le Meridien to move into an emerging destination that has recently experienced ongoing stability and substantial growth. Strong inward investment and the anticipated accession to the EU over the next five years will also contribute to the overall success of the region."

Located on the sea front at Podstrana six kilometres to the south of Split city centre, the hotel is 20-minutes by road or boat from the city centre. It is a 40-minute drive from Split-Kastela International Airport, which is currently being redeveloped. The airport is served by a variety of international scheduled and chartered airlines from key European cities.

As well as being an important commercial city, Split is a popular tourist destination offering an attractive coastline with important historical and cultural elements. UNESCO lists much of the centre of the old city as being a world heritage site. It has one of the largest commercial ports on the Mediterranean attracting an increasing number of visitors and cruise-ship passengers.

London-based Le Meridien currently operates a portfolio of more than 130 upscale hotels in 56 countries worldwide, including 44 in Europe.

Brand new Dalmatina (Zagreb-Split) highway in Croatia

http://jugo.novinka.cz/hr/dalmacie/aktual/dalnice/obr_daln.jpg

Well, I was drive all over from Zagreb to the Adriatic Coast about 300 km on that brand new Croatian highway, and I must say that Croatia is ready for EU.

That highway is better than most highways in EU. Tunnel Sveti Rock long almost 6000 meters on the top of the mountain in Dalmatia is excellent. View from resting plaice on exit from that tunnel and on the entrance in Dalmatia is excellent. The most impressive thing is that this highway all over from Zagreb to Adriatic Coast is cover with electronics. In tunnels surveillance cameras are all over tunnels, over the road on almost every few kilometers are digital signs where you are able to see how much degrees are temperature outside in combination with digital warning traffic signs. What I must mention is nature around that highway.

Work is fast proceeding on the construction of the "Rijeka WTC" in the Croatian port city of Rijeka. Below are a couple of construction pictures and some information.

The Rijeka WTC is a large shopping centre which includes a 15 level office building. The total size of the retail area is 140,000 sqm over 5 levels making it one of the largest complexes in that part of Europe. Already nearly 50% of the area has been purchased or leased.

The complex is set to be completed in the first half of 2006 and so far 3 underground levels have been completed and the first 2 levels of the office tower. Once complete it will create 1300 new jobs. There are also a number of other important projects underway in Rijeka.

"WTC Shopping Centre Rijeka" Growing
Rijeka, 2nd September 2004

The multipurpose trade centre “WTC Shopping Centre Rijeka”, with the total covered surface area of 140,000 m2, planned to be opened in the first half of the year 2006, is becoming reality. Numerous journalists could see for themselves when they accompanied Rijeka mayor Vojko Obersnel and members of the City Administration in their visit to this large building site.

The “WTC Shopping Centre Rijeka” project manager Sergio Innocenti pointed out that it is going to be one of the most beautiful, most modern and most functional of the multipurpose trade centres, not only in Croatia, but Europe as well. For its realisation, an investment of round 150m Euros has been envisaged, while it will employ round 1,300 people once it has become completed.

The building of such a demanding object has become possible due to the seriousness of the investor Policentro Rijeka d.o.o., but also due to the good cooperation with local authorities, first of all the mayor, who, since the very beginning, has had trust in this project, despite all the problems that accompanied its realisation, emphasised Innocenti.

Three underground floor levels have been built, as well as the first two floor levels of the business tower. The future ground floor, the location for a large supermarket, is just being built. Almost 43% of the trade area have already been sold or leased on a long term, particularly larger trade areas, while the final internal arrangement of the business tower will depend on future buyers, with whom negotiations are still being held. Although housing facilities have not been envisaged in the business tower, there have been enquiries for the purchase of flats, in case there is such a possibility. This is something still to be pondered upon, clarified Innocenti. Therefore, the internal arrangement will depend on the sale of the space. Negotiations with Italian companies that already have are planning to open their representations in Rijeka, namely, Croatia, are also underway.

Policentro d.o.o. Rijeka, in the majority ownership of “Policentro S.p.a.” from Italy, company that specialises in building important multipurpose trade centres in Italy and abroad, is the investor. Rizzani de Eccher S.p.a., from Udine in Italy, is in charge of carrying out the construction works. Through its Croatian branch, Rizzani de Eccher d.o.o., they outsourced the building of the foundations to the GP Krk d.d., while Montmontaža d.d. took over the construction works. December 2005 is the scheduled time of completion, while the opening of the Centre is envisaged for the first half of the year 2006.

Mayor Obersnel expressed his satisfaction with the dynamics of construction works, namely, the WTC Rijeka completion by 2006. This biggest single investment in the city will provide new facilities, a new quality of services and new standards, and, what is most important is that the Trade Centre will employ 1,300 people, pointed out Obersnel.

The participation of the city in the project realisation consists in the building of the roundabout. The making of its project documentation is underway, while its realisation follows in the year 2005. All the project documentation for the building of tunnel connections to the future road D-404, the construction of which will coincide with the building of WTC Rijeka, has been completed. The City of Rijeka owns about 9% of the WTC Company Rijeka and, according to the Agreement, this part ownership will be refunded to the city upon the completion of the construction works.

The first four floor levels will locate round hundred and sixty smaller or larger shops as well as nine large trade spaces of more than 1,000 m2, among which also a hypermarket of over 8,000 m2.

The fifth floor level is intended for entertainment and leisure facilities, being planned for 10 multiplex cinemas, restaurants, fitness clubs and other entertainment and sports facilities.

Besides the underground car parks, seven above the ground car parks will be built, situated sideways from the trade floor levels, with a total of round 64,000 m2 of car park surface area and 2,150 parking places for cars.

The complex also envisages a fifteen-floor business tower, with offices, congress and conference halls, suitable for holding different manifestations. The Centre will be within easy reach by car or public transport. In order to improve the traffic flow, a one-way road will be built around the whole of the complex, thus enabling a fast and undisturbed car traffic and an easier reach of the car parks on all of the floor levels.

Incoming and outgoing tunnel connections to the fast road D-404 have also been planned.

Zadar (Not to be confused with Croatia's capital Zagreb) is a seaside port city located in Northern Dalmatia) and services a population of close to 100,000 citizens.

As a result of the new Zagreb-Split motorway which opened this year, travel time between Zagreb & Zadar is no more than a couple of hours. The city of Split is even closer.

Zadar is a historic city since Roman times and contains many Roman Era relics and also many early Medieval Croatian buildings.

Surrounding the city is a number of popular resort towns, islands and numerous holiday retreats owned by the "Northeners" or "Purgers" as those people living in Zagreb are refered to.

Two major projects are the redevelopment of former industrial sites and there are many more.

Below is the master plan of the redevelopment of "TIZ" of the former complex of the "Textile Industy of Zadar" which occupies one of the most attractive locations right in the city centre. The redevelopment involves the contruction of a variety of buildings including .....

15 level office tower with underground car parks
2 x 7 level residential buildings
1 x 6 level residential building
Reconstruction of the former "TIZ" office building
2 x smaller commercial buildings
Retail podium levels

PROSTORNI PLAN Arhitekt Nikola Bašić predstavio studiju uvala Maestral i Dražanica
Zadar dobiva svoju Barcelonetu

Wow, those coastal cities are finally gearing up for some great projects which will no doubt boost their economies. Dubrovnik needs these kind of projects and Gruž district is a great option. Basically this will create a decent sized retail precinct supported by a commercial area that will include office buildings.

Dubrovnik is the hottest property market in Croatia and is fast becoming a second home to a number of international rich and famous. Dubrovnik airport before the break up of Yugoslavia was the second busiest after Belgrade.

the backpackers projekt will be quite interesting,

i want to model it on the new one that the YHA has opened up at Central Station in Sydney, do you know the one i am talking about?

it will not be a low class type of backpackers, it will be easy maintenance and clean, i think very profitable for my fellow CROATIAN investor.

Yep I know which one down in Central. Apparently this is a huge demand for backpacker accommodation throughout Croatia. This is going to be one of the biggest market potential for tourism. :)

Sincity,

Zadar is definitely one of the places to be for construction in Croatia.

Its port is earmarked as one of the strategic ports Croatia and for the whole of Eastern Europe.

Some Serious money is earmarked to be spent there in upgrading the port.

Along with that some major warehousing will be built near the airport.

Since we have the new highway it makes sense, and Zadar is proabably one of the only Dalmatian Cities that can grow.

Yes Dubrovnik, is fast becoming the most expensive city in Croatia, a lot of people want to get in from Croatia and abroad. Its the place to be! for solid real estate investment.

I think the prices are pretty high, but that is good in away because it will attract a more sofisticated type of people, which will keep values high.

The market needs to mature a little also.

I must say that town planning in Dubrovnik is probably the most sensitive in the whole of Croatia, all new developments have to blend in, so i dont think the look and feel of dubrovnik will be compromised.

I was reading yesterday that an employment boom was gradually taking place in the Lika region to the north of Zadar. The article basically said that because of the new motorway much of Lika is no longer a forgotten backwater. It stated that many settlements are now becoming outer suburbs of Zadar because the motorway has significantly reduced travel time! Zadar being the main port on the mid Adriatic from Zagreb will help kick off development big time.

Luckily it was the case in past decades that new developments try and fit in with the atmosphere in Dubrovnik so luckily you dont see too many commie highrises but many low to medium rise buildings. Some of those hotels didn't look that great but hopefully the makeovers will fix some of those aesthetic issues .......

The second largest port reconstruction project in Croatia is Zadar's new passenger terminal worth EUR 75 million. The government has already allocated EUR 3 million for initial construction works, and is considering financing options for the project.

Dubrovnik Cable Stayed Bridge

http://www.structurae.net/thumbs/113/dubrovnik-002.jpg

This Bridge is a technical Truimph and a significant bridge in the world.

It is the longest span single A Pylon Bridge Built, what makes it interesting is that it is a composite deck structure with post & pre tensioned cable stays.

The bridge across Rijeka Dubrovacka is situated on the western entrance to Dubrovnik, historical medieval town and one of the most known tourist destinations on the Adriatic coast in Croatia. It crosses sea-strait approximately 5 km deep. The existing road passes along the seashore so that increased traffic jeopardises the environment and prevents the development of tourism. The bridge comprises the main cable stayed bridge with composite superstructure and prestressed, concrete approach bridge. The main span of the bridge is 304,5 m. No piers were allowed in the water due to navigation constraints, resulting in one main bridge opening of at least 300 m. The vertical navigation clearance was set to 50 m. The works on the bridge started in 1990, before the war for Croatian independence, when west approach roads and the west-bank abutment were constructed. Works on the bridge construction started again in 1999 based on a modification of the original design.

RIJEKA GATEWAY PROJECT

Since the foundation of the Port of Rijeka Authority, and with the aim of effecting the established policies, several studies have been drawn by expert teams regarding the developmental possibilities of the port. These studies were also used during the making of the ten years development plan of the port of Rijeka, as well as in the two years developmental plans. The urgency with which these plans had to be made implied the necessity to stop the decrease of the port’s turnover, as well as the creation of conditions for a more effective port activity.

http://www.portauthority.hr/rijeka/images/foto11-1.jpg

The World Bank and the Port of Rijeka Authority have accepted the proposal of the consultancy firm Rotterdam Maritime Group, The Netherlands, which has drawn up the Study of the Modernization of the Port of Rijeka.

http://www.portauthority.hr/rijeka/images/foto-razvoj.jpg

On July 12th 2003 the agreement was signed by which the World Bank granted to the Government of the Republic of Croatia a loan of 155 million US dollars. Of exceptional importance are the projects regarding the modernization of existing and the expansion of new terminals, but for the town of Rijeka the waterfront project is of primary importance. This project implies the opening of the central part of the port area for commercial purposes, and the access of citizens to that part of the coastal area. It implies also that the passenger terminal, the southern part of Delta and the port ‘Porto Baroš’ will have completely different spatial and territorial plans with the aim of giving access to these parts of town to all the citizens thus creating new, attractive town spaces typical of Mediterranean towns.

http://www.portauthority.hr/rijeka/images/foto13.jpg

This year the drawing of the project for a fishing ships’ port in the Torpedo area has begun. In the process of making is the project for the recovery and the extension of the breakwater, and for the deepening of the draft in the small port. The Port Authority and the town of Rijeka have become co-owners of most buildings around the Torpedo port. With this project the lack of space for fishing ships, due to the construction of the passenger terminal, will be solved. The project also comprises the idea of a fish exchange and all other adjoining services (shops, bars) together with the fishing port. Examples throughout the world show that fishing ports are important segments of harbor towns that cultivate their fishing traditions, but also create an attractive town center offering to citizens and tourists various attractions. This project aims to stimulate entrepreneurs to render additional and catering services inside the fishing port. In an economic sense, the project will give a new impetus to the fishing industry, which was greatly neglected.

http://www.portauthority.hr/rijeka/images/razvoj-karta1.gif

The project of modernization of the port of Rijeka and of the road network is a very complex one. It is planned, besides modernizing and restructuring the port, to encompass with the project the construction of the east wing of the Rijeka roundabout, from Orehovica to Križišće, of the connecting roads Draga – Brajdica and Čavle - Križišće and the reconstruction of the bridge coast – island of Krk. With all this Rijeka, as well as the broader region, will have a qualitative connection to the highway Rijeka - Zagreb - Budapest, which is part of European traffic corridors. Such an envisaged project should solve the greatest problems of the Rijeka road junction.

PROJECT'S IMPLEMENTATION STAGES

Western part of the port of Rijeka – Zagreb wharf

By creating new areas in the Rijeka basin, by demolishing the old nonfunctional warehouses, as well as by building the new wharf, the realization of the project of a gradual relocation of the cargo part of the port, from today’s inadequate locations to the newly prepared areas in the western part of the port, will begin.

http://www.portauthority.hr/rijeka/images/foto14.jpg

In the western part of the Rijeka basin, the building of a new multipurpose terminal (containers, timber, general cargo) is envisaged. The Rijeka Gateway Project plans the financing and the building of the first 250m, of the overall 600 m of new wharf. By building the remaining 600 m, at the end the wharf will be 1.200 m long and it will dispose with 300,000 m2 of new areas.

http://www.portauthority.hr/rijeka/images/foto15.jpg

The wharf will be built on pillars and the sea depth along the wharf will be more than 20 m. The financing and the construction of the part of wharf not covered by the World Bank’s loan will be based on a BOT (build, operate, transfer) contract.

http://www.portauthority.hr/rijeka/images/foto16.jpg
http://www.portauthority.hr/rijeka/images/razvoj-karta2-1.jpg
http://www.portauthority.hr/rijeka/images/razvoj-karta3.gif

For the new wharf to be adequately connected with the Rijeka roundabout, i.e. with the main traffic routes leading towards Zagreb, Ljubljana and Dalmatia, the construction of a new connecting road is planned (the road D - 403 1.9 km long).

http://www.portauthority.hr/rijeka/images/razvoj-karta4.gif

The warehouses in the western part of the harbor are no longer adequate for the storing of goods, and since the area of the commercial port has no possibility of expansion, to be competitive with other North-Adriatic ports, these warehouses are going to be demolished and instead new warehouses are going to be built which are more suited to the needs of storing cargoes. Because of their cultural heritage value, the warehouses no.12 and 17 will be kept and reconstructed.

http://www.portauthority.hr/rijeka/images/foto17.jpg

Passenger terminal (Central port - port Baroš - Delta)

With this part of the project, the reconstruction of 17 hectares of land is planned upon which currently there are different port activities, warehouses and parking lots.

The project comprises the construction of:

a modern ferry terminal to be built along the existing passenger wharf on a part of the Rijeka breakwater, with the concomitant buildings on the Senj quayside;

a passenger wharf;

a nautical center – marina;

different commercial and cultural-entertainment centers;

roads connecting the port with the Rijeka roundabout;

http://www.portauthority.hr/rijeka/images/razvoj-karta5.gif

http://www.portauthority.hr/rijeka/images/razvoj-karta6.gif

The project plans the building of a new road (D-404 4.4 km long) across the area of Brajdica, which will connect the container terminal and the Sušak basin with the Rijeka roundabout, i.e. with the main traffic routes leading towards Zagreb, Ljubljana and Dalmatia.

http://www.portauthority.hr/rijeka/images/razvoj-karta7.gif

This project intends to convert part of the commercial port into a passenger port, because of inadequate conditions of transshipment on the existing locations. For the realization of this part of the project, some types of cargo which is being manipulated in the central part of the port (timber and bulk cargo) have to be moved to specialized terminals. The bulk cargo will be transferred to Bakar - terminal for bulk cargo, and the timber to the western part of the port were a multipurpose terminal will be built – the Zagreb wharf.
With the implementation of this part of the project, Rijeka will regain the image of a maritime and Mediterranean town.

Reconstruction of Vienna berth

The reconstruction of the Vienna berth is done as part of the Rijeka Gateway Project. It costs about 1,5 million USD and it is most urgent and important investment.

The reconstruction started in September 2004. and it will probably be finished within eight months. With this construction works, started the realization of the Rijeka Gateway Project, a programme of modernization of the Port of Rijeka which is realized with the support of the World Bank.

Reconstruction includes works on roadway which are 247 meters long and 17 meters wide, replacement of rails, tracks of crain for electroenergetic charge and outdoor light, and works on sewer system and plumbing.

The project of Vienna berth is also connected with the realization of the contract for the purchase of two mobile cranes which are worth 3,2 million euros and they will be transported to the Port of Rijeka by the end of this year. The cranes will be partly used at Vienna berth for overload of general cargo.

The Bulgarian holding Multigroup (MG) has reached an agreement to sell off its share in Libertas Hotel in Dubrovnik.

Libertas, which is one the most luxurious hotels in Croatia's Adriatic pearl Dubrovnik, was bought for the openly tender bid price of EUR 4,6 M by MG Corporation in 2002.

Buying the hotel in 2002, MG engaged to invest EUR 26 M for reconstruction works, as Libertas had suffered seriously in the bombardment over Dubrovnik in 1991-1992. It had to increase the capacity of 670 beds and upgrade the hotel's rating up to five stars.

Meanwhile, MG had founded another company Inex Gorica, registered in Zagreb with the intention to buy several other Adriatic hotels, and total up its lodging-capacity to 5,000-7,000 beds.

The murder of MG's boss Ilya Pavlov in March 2003 terminated the company's renovation and expansion plans and soon afterwards Inex Gorica was covertly renamed into MG Adriatic, with headquarters in Dubrovnik. The new company had decided to sell off Libertas because of financial difficulties.

Once constructed, SV.ROK tunnel shall be the longest road tunnel in Croatia. Its length is 5,661 m. It is located in the central part of the Adriatic Highway, section Sv.Rok - Maslenica, 32.4 km length. The tunnel goes below the southern Velebit and Tulove grede, and in the region of Mali Halan, where the road Obrovac - Sv.Rok was built as an access road to the southern and northern portal as early as 1832.
SV.ROK tunnel was designed with two tunnel pipes of 35.0 m axe distance. The construction is planned in phases, i.e. 50% of the second tunnel pipe to be completed in the Phase I. The entrance is at 510 m altitude, and the exit at 561 m altitude with average upper stratum of 450 m. The carriageway width is 2 x 3.85 m, longitudinal fall 0.4 and 1.5%, and cross fall 1.5 - 2.5%. The surface of light opening is 58.09 m2, and excavation surface 70.90 m2 to 82.30 m2. The concrete tunnel lining is MB 30 d=30 cm thickness.
Along the main pipe, the following facilities were to be made: 4 turnarounds, 12 hard shoulder niches, 14 pedestrian emergency passages, 6 niches for transformer stations and 64 SOS and power niches.
The tunnelling works started on 4 February 1997 and ended on 6 October 1999. To reach the tunnelling site, KONSTRUKTOR-INŽENJERING d.d. SPLIT excavated and secured 3,391.5 m in the tunnel. Along the main pipe of 5,661 m, 2,700 m of the second tunnel pipe (48%) was excavated and secured, as well as 176 m transversal connections in the turnaround. 520.000 m3 of fused material was excavated, out of which more than 60% by our company.
With the completed excavation and security of tunnel pipes, by November 2001 we completed the hydro-isolation, reinforcement and concrete lining of the tunnel pipe normal profile, 80% of the total length. The remaining 20% is the higher profile of niches and turnaround (excavation area 100 m2) also already arranged and started.
Besides such works, there are still works on the main sewage, carriageway structure and portal structures. The term for completion is 1 October 2002.
The New Austrian Tunnel Method (NATM) was applied, as the best possible in our Karst area characterised with frequent rock mass changes. The excavation was carried out in all tunnel categories from II. to V., causing application of almost all the usual materials for the primary structure (expansion and adhesion anchors, various reinforcement nets, jet concrete of 5 to 30 cm, steel arches, plates and steel pikes as part of tunnelling pre-structure). The excavation was carried out in full profile and in phases (calotte and bench) in the 4th and 5th tunnel category. Along with such typical solutions, there are special technical solutions related to passage through cave facilities.
The equipment for tunnel works was chosen according to the selected technology with technical features corresponding to the most contemporary machines. For key works, new equipment was purchased such as:
- drilling machine with three drilling branches and a basket,
- jet concrete machine for humid procedure,
- dampers for export of 13 m3, single-jointed, specially made for tunnelling,
- and ventilators of 65 m3/s with frequency regulation.
To concrete the tunnel in 12 m sections, metal tunnel formwork was purchased, making possible to concrete not only the normal profile but also higher profile of niches and turnarounds as it has the possibility of telescopic widening. For production of concrete aggregates, a movable crushing facility was purchased, which uses the material out of tunnel excavation for production of fractions.
Out of specific features related to the construction of SV.ROK tunnel, it is necessary to emphasize extremely comprehensive preparation works such as large mine clearance areas (construction site, power transmission and water supply lines), repair of 13 km power transmission damaged in the recent war, and construction of 6.5 km long, technologically complex water supply with water lifting height up to 420 m. The works on excavation and security of tunnelling were parallel with bringing all the resources to the construction site, so that the first 700 m of the tunnel was made with a diesel engine. A sort of uncertainty were caves that frequently needed previous testing in order to find the optimum passage through.
SV.ROK tunnel represents the first application in Croatia of the system of non-electric detonators, which provided large additional safety for tunnelling and, along with the other security measures, represented a significantly safe work with no risky steps, and made possible the excavation and security of the tunnel without serious injuries. Also, the material obtained in the tunnel was well used for production of concrete aggregates, which was not the usual practice.
The start and progress of the works on SV.ROK tunnel took place at the time when the introduction of foreign tunnelling companies in Croatia was a trend. Some of those attempts did not end well, while SV.ROK tunnel justified the reputation of the Croatian construction industry and confirmed KONSTRUKTOR-INŽENJERING d.d. as the leading tunnelling company.

Dubrovacka Luka will recieve a 25 Million euro facelift. construction to start in November 2004.

They are going to make it much longer.

The consulting company is wyld.

All Croatian ports are getting much needed upgrades. Another port of interest is Ploce which was the main port used by Bosnia and beyond.

These infrastruction improvements with the new motorways will see large amounts of cargo pass thru Croatia. Should also see a more streamlined process as well.

Historically Croatian ports have be the major exist and entry points for Central Europe via the sea.

New Passenger Terminal for Dubrovnik .......

http://www.dnevnik.com.hr/admin/upload/images/1079474941dubrovnikB.jpg

Koncesija do 99 godina

Opening of the first Hilton in Croatia in 2005.

Hilton International will be making its official debut in Croatia in May 2005, with the opening of the Hilton Imperial Dubrovnik.

The hotel is the outcome of a 20 million Euro investment made by the shipping company Atlantska Plovidba, Hilton International and the Austrian construction company Bau Holding Strabag. Hilton Imperial Dubrovnik is strategically positioned on the edge of the historic city walls that enclose the old city. The hotel is to be set in the verdant splendour of a beautiful garden and will boast a great sea view.

The Hilton Imperial Dubrovnik is in fact a reconversion of two former hotels that were originally opened in 1895, combining fascinating 19th century architecture with a modern design that will provide the ultimate in comfort and the very latest technology. The hotel will retain its original twin-palazzo structure, offering 147 guest rooms, many of which will have sea views, and will be characterised by a Mediterranean decor, discreet lighting, warm tones and marble finishing inlaid with valuable woods.

The Executive Floor is to comprise Executive rooms and the Executive Lounge, an exclusive environment with a panoramic terrace, perfect for relaxing or for conducting a discreet business meeting. The Executive Lounge will also offer satellite TV and international press, and a large range of snacks and hot and cold drinks will be provided free of charge all day.

The hotel's event and conference facilities will offer the ultimate in meetings technology, in a complex spanning two floors and comprising 6 Hilton Meetings rooms, a 244 sq.m. Ballroom large enough for up to 250 guests with the capacity to separate to form two rooms, and a foyer perfect for exhibits and presentations.

The hotel's contemporary restaurant will delight the senses with an added touch of local colour, offering a broad range of international cuisine and Dalmatian specialties prepared using freshly-caught seafood. Located on the lower ground floor, this restaurant will also feature a veranda with soaring, expansive windows and a summer terrace. It will also be possible to reserve an area to create an intimate dining experience for up to 12 persons. The Lobby Bar will be the perfect bistrot for light snacks and drinks, and will be transformed in the evening into a piano bar, serving exquisite cocktails with a soft backdrop of live music. Moreover, the hotel Fitness Club and indoor pool will offer pleasant surroundings for relaxation.

Cpt Ante Jerkovic, President of Atlanska Plovidba, declares: "We are pleased that Hilton International, one of the world's finest hotel brands, has selected Dubrovnik as the site of the first Hilton hotel in Croatia. By fully utilizing Hilton's vast global sales network, we hope to reach out to a large percentage of all upper scale travellers who will choose Dubrovnik for their business and leisure journeys".

Didier Martin, Vice President Operations for Hilton International says: "The opening of the Hilton Imperial Dubrovnik will be an important moment for the Croatian tourist industry. Hilton decided to invest in this absolutely unique setting, a Unesco World Heritage Site, on the basis of the confirmed major development potential that it offers from both a business and a tourism point of view.

The hotel is an ideal holiday location, within reach of the area's many tourist attractions, and will also ensure business travellers as well as participants to meeting or incentives high standards of service and quality, guaranteed to meet the international standards set by the world's best known hotel brand.

By combining these facilities and standards with a touch of regional flavour, the Hilton Imperial Dubrovnik will quickly become an exemplary reference within the Croatian hotel market.

Ludwig Steinbauer, Member of the Board of STRABAG AG, expressed his contentment that an important part of the architectural history of Dubrovnik returned dynamically, representing quality and beauty. "The Hilton Dubrovnik" he states, "constitutes one of Dubrovnik landmarks and we are especially happy that following the complete renovation and upgrading of the building, the hotel has once again acquired the position that it always held in this unique location" .

Work has begun on a new definitive building for the Croatian city of Osijek.

The Esseker Centre will be a new office and residential complex that will be distinctive and a landmark in the city centre. This is one of many new buildings for this city .....

Also a new Zagreb brige over Sava is U/C. It is the biggest and most expensive temporary project in Zagreb. It is a part of future Central Wastewater Treatment Plant (Centralni uređaj za pročišćavanje otpadnih voda) for the city of Zagreb. The work on this project started 2 years ago by construction of the Domovinski most (Homeland Bridge) which will carry wastewater from the right bank of the Sava River and the New Zagreb area to the pumping station and water treatment plant which will be located on the other side of the river. Drinking water coming from the well area on the right side of the Sava River will also be transferred using this bridge. The bridge will also accommodate motor vehicle, tram, bicycle and pedestrian traffic. It will be 840 m in length. When completed, this project will cost cca 180 millions euros.

Actualy, Essek is a Hungarian name accepted by Germans. In old Austria-Hungarian Monarchy Osijek was in a Hungarian part, where Hungarian language was dominant. But it is very interesting how many new projects in eastern and central Europe have English or German names (in Zagreb: Eurocenter, Zagrebtower, Eurotower, Agramis, Almeria tower…).

Actually it isn't the one above. Thats a different complex to which the site is either for sale or sold. The plan to Almeria differs in the sense the tower doesn't sit in the narrow corner. I think the plan above is for the adjacent corner to Almeria .....

POČELI RADOVI NA NOVOJ ZGRADI MUZEJA SUVREMENE UMJETNOSTI
ponedjeljak, 17.11.2003 13:17

Ministar kulture Antun Vujić i zagrebačka gradonačelnica Vlasta Pavić otvorili su danas radove na izgradnji nove zgrade Muzeja suvremene umjetnosti na lokaciji sjeveroistočno od križanja Avenije Dubrovnik i Avenije Većeslava Holjevca u Novom Zagrebu. L

The Tramway is returning to the streets of Dubrovnik.

Connecting Gruz to Pile (the northern side of the old city)

http://www.slobodnadalmacija.hr/20041028/images/du20a.jpg

Wow, thats great stuff. What they should do is return the old style trams to give Dubrovnik more character and charm (like there isn't plenty of it :D).

Otherwise they could use the Croatian built "CroTram" which rolls out across Zagreb in the next 6 months.

I love trams! :)

The Bridge linking Croatia 2.2km long from Ploce to Peljasac, to start in the very near future.

http://www.vecernji-list.hr/system/galleries/pics/041029/hrv-dvotracni-txt.jpg

Fantastic looking Bridge..

More info in Croatian:

Dvotračni most od 2,2 km spojit će Hrvatsku

Most Komarna Pelješac bit će dvotračni, dužine 2,2 kilometra i počet će se graditi sredinom iduće godine.

Ispitivanje podmorja
Most će oživjeti cijeli hrvatski jug, a pogotovu otoke Korčulu i Lastovo, kojima će skratiti vezu s kopnom.
Ivo Sanader i Luka Bebić. A i o mogućoj cijeni.

Područje kojim će prolaziti most i cesta kroz Pelješac trebalo bi prostornim planom proglasiti turističkom zonom.

It seems that this big project of Rijeka University Campus is really going to be realized :) . Yesterday Croatian Goverment made agreeement about taking loan of 490 mil. kunas (or 70 mil. euros).

This is the article from Novi list:

Posebno ističem i studiju o opravdanosti programa ulaganja u I. fazu kampusa.
Posebnu zahvalnost želim iskazati ministru znanosti, obrazovanja i športa dr.

«WTC Shopping Centre Rijeka» Growing

Czech Cultural Centre Foundation Stone Laid in Rijeka

Rijeka, 20th September 2004
A three-day manifestation marking the 90th anniversary of “Češka Beseda” in Rijeka and the 10th anniversary of its resumption, ended on Sunday 19th of September with the laying of the foundation stone for the future Czech Cultural Centre in Ćićarijska road in Hosti.

In the presence of numerous guests among who were also Dr. Petr Buriánek, Ambassador of the Czech Republic in Croatia, members of Croatian parliament and representatives of ethnic minorities that live in the area of Rijeka, the City of Rijeka Mayor, Mr. Vojko Obersnel, laid the foundation stone for the future Czech Cultural Centre.

Beside the foundation stone, Mrs. Fanika Ghusak, president of “Češka Beseda” Rijeka, laid the document written in Croatian and in Czech with the date of the foundation stone laying and a short text about the this ceremony and its participants.

The land for the building of the Czech Cultural centre was bought from the City of Rijeka in the March of 2001. Architect Patrizia Tricoli has made the project documentation. The Czech Cultural Home will have about 1,100 square meters, consisting of basement, ground floor and one storey. “Češka Beseda” Rijeka will have its headquarters in it. The building will have a small catering facility, rooms for accommodating guest ensembles and companies, as well as an auditorium and a stage for cultural and other programmes.

The estimated amount for the building and its interior decoration is around 9 million Kuna. The works should be done in two phases. In the first phase that should be completed in the year 2005, the whole of the building will be constructed. The second phase will take care of the interior decoration of the building and the surrounding landscaping.

The building of this Centre is financially supported by the City of Rijeka, the Primorje-Gorski kotar County, the Ethnic Minorities Office of the Republic of Croatia, the Czech Republic and numerous friends from the Czech Republic who have already given their donations, be it financial, for the acquisition of the land, be it in construction material for the works on the Centre. The Czech city of Ostrava has already donated construction iron, while Češke Budjeovice donated timber.

The World Bank approved a US$156.5 million loan for the Croatia Rijeka Gateway Project

This integrated project involves City of Rijeka, Port of Rijeka, Port Authority, Hrvatske ceste, Hrvatske autoceste, and the Government of Croatia. It will bring substantial benefits to Croatia and citizens of Rijeka and Croatia. It is the largest project which World bank ever supported in Croatia.
The project will help to restore and rehabilitate Rijeka Port to its traditional role to keep serving as a port not only for Croatia but Central Europe. The project is designed to increase cargo traffic by 7% each year over the next six years, and to encrease passenger traffic by 5%, each year also over the next six years. This increase in the port will be done by privatising the port operations over the period of time gradually, which will lead to reduction, over time, government substitutes to the port, and saving money for the national budget.
The project will do much more than just economic benefit for Rijeka and Croatia. The redeveloped part of Rijeka Port for urban purposes will allow the location for shopping and other attractive facillities near the waterfront of Rijeka. The construction of the connector from the port to the road around Rijeka through tunnel, will significantly reduce pollution and noise from traffic, which will now pass under the city.
The completion of the Rijeka bypass road will bring to a significant saving of time for people transiting around Rijeka, tourists and commercial traffic. It is estimated that by 2006 the average time that a truck takes to transit Rijeka will be reduced from one hour to twenty minutes. This will not only produce economic benefits but it will improve the quality of life in Rijeka and people transiting Rijeka. This projects however extends beyond Rijeka, there is also a component that will help remove 30 micro-spots of high traffic accidents across Croatia. This will reduce costs but more importantly it will help save lives of people on Croatian roads. Lastly this project will rehabilitate the concrete Krk bridge which has begun to deteriorate
The IBRD loan for the project has a 15-year maturity, with a grace period of 5 years. The project, valued at US$264 million in total, is expected to be completed by 2009.

Rail from Zagreb to Split alredy exist, but I didn't hear anything about plans for Dubrovnik rail.

In last 4 years Croatian railways invested lot of money in reconstruction and redevelopment of railroads, new cars and stations, including Zagreb commuter trains.
Planned investment: 15.5 billion kunas or 2 billion euros.
I alredy posted few pics of new diesel trains. Today I have some new pics of interior and exterior of new passanger cars (mostly product of Croatia :) ).

Hey thats good stuff for Osijek. I like the look of that square from above. In Osijek they are also building Esseker and Eurodom centres. Both are office buildings with Erodom being twin 9 level towers.

BTW, today we got 3. mobile phone operator in Croatia – Tele 2. Until now we had only HT-mobile (T-mobile) and VIPNET

Article in Croatian:

TELE2 - TREĆI OPERATER MOBILNE TELEFONIJE

ZAGREB, 22. prosinca 2004.

Astroboy and WW, I think you will be interested in this: Croatia's economy growing rate in 2004 - 3,9 %

Article from Hina:

HNB: STOPA RASTA BDP-A OVE GODINE 3,9 POSTO

ZAGREB, 23. prosinca 2004.

Thanks LF, I also read today that Croatia's standard of living has also finally broken the level of 1990. Basically it took Croatia 14 years after war, economic stagnation to finally return to the same standard of living before the collapse of Yugoslavia. Anything from now onwards is an improvement to Croatia's standard of living. Watch out Slovenia, we are now hot on your tails. ;)

Some parts of his project are alredy completed, like new student dormitory.

Article from večernji list, in Croatian:

U dva paviljona dugačka 75 i široka 15 metara s četiri kata suvremeno će se urediti i opremiti 250 studentskih soba s ukupno 500 ležajeva. Time će osječko Sveučilište Josipa Jurja Strossmayera povećati smještajni kapacitet uza sadašnji studentski dom na ukupno 756 postelja.
