That was great of you Culwulla to take that photo. This is one project that has been neglected here at this forum. Nice to see how it is progressing.

Thanks for the pic Culwulla! I didn't realise how high it had risen! Last time I saw that area, they had just put the crane up!
Also, your camera has a good zoom lens! Behind Quadrant we can see some of the buildings of the University of Sydney, then behind that, Alpha House on King St/City Rd Newtown, and in the veeeery distance, some of Hurstville's towers through the haze! :)

This southern end of Sydney's CBD was considered the city's hub in the 1890s. Sydney's CBD is expanding to this area again very quickly.
The Quadrant's construction is progressing rapidly and right on schedule. It is due for completion by Sept./Oct. 2003. The current cost of the whole mixed-use development stands at just over $170 million. One of the highest retail area sales so far has been for a 279sq m shopfront on Broadway for $1.34 million.
There are approx. 390 apartments in the 3 main buildings with only 20 left (mainly one bedroomers) i.e. just over 94% have been sold off the plan.
Although there wil be entrances to the complex from Mountain & Wattle Streets and Broadway, interestingly enough the public space mainly opens out from Owen Lane that runs behind the development, running parallel to Broadway.

Yesterday i noticed the Australand core for the tallest 15 storey building, which will be known as Blackwattle Tower, is fast approaching the tower section of the Baulderstone Hornibrook crane.
The 15 storey Blackwattle Tower will also have a rooftop garden for the residents.
It definitely looks that there will be access from the Broadway side to the public space with its water features, cafes and restaurants.

I have a new construction photo. This was taken today from the roof of Town Hall House. Culwulla said it has topped out.

ok, i didn't ask this before, but seriously - what is that white coloured blocky mid-rise in front of Quadrant? And more importantly, why does it have hardly any windows?!?! :?

I believe the building in question is part of the Sydney Institue of Technology (part of UTS now?). Not sure about the lack of windows or the name of the building though. :?

The white blocky mid-rise with no windows is Builing M, the Mechanical Engineering Dept. for Ultimo Tafe i.e. the Sydney Institue of Technology (S.I.T.). It's on the corner of Mary Ann & Jones Streets, Ultimo.
Also over the last couple of nights, the Western side scaffolding on Blackwattle Tower has been floodlit fluoro blue. Very pretty! Along with the Baulderstone Hornibrook crane being lit to boot!

Core has almost topped out.
Also the Wattle Street side of the complex is being painted. Quite nice tones of brown and mustard i think. Must take a closer squiz.

MuseumB is right to say that this was once a "hub" of the former Sydney (Grace Bros Dept Store, Marcus Clark Dept Store, Central Station, etc). This area was once a major wasteland, home to squatters, arsonists, criminals, vagrants, etc. Due to all the vast construction activity recently, the southern areas of the CBD have began to take off.
The last time this area saw any major activity was the late 50s and now just take a look at it, World Sq, Railway Sq and now Broadway.
The best thing I like about Quadrant after its design is the fact that the string of Victorian/Edwardian shoftfronts on Broadway are being kept and restored. Anything that revives period buildings in my books is a big positive.

Out of the 390 apartments, about 150 have been sold as student accommodation. Out of the other 240, only 16 now remain for commitment.
ATM There is green scaffolding everywhere, including on the row of 3 storey buildings along Broadway, preparing to be painted. They have all been sold to commercial interests.

It was very cool to see, when I walked past the site recently, that the demand for this development has been enough to have all the buildings being constructed at once!
It would have been very easy for a large scale apartment complex like this to have been built in stages (for the separate buildings) but all seems to be full speed ahead!
Can't wait to see the final product when construction is done - this particular stretch of Broadway (i.e. the shopfronts) was so depressed for a while, but it seems to be getting a whole new lease on life! :)

Even though the main 15 storey Blackwattle Tower has virtually topped out, there is green mesh over the whole complex, including the 2 level stores along Broadway.
I am hoping that the stores are going to be given fresh coats of paint (i'm sure they are going to be, as they have all been sold to commercial interests).

They definately will be mb.
I am really looking forward to this 'refurb' of this part of Broadway because it will go a long way to making it a rather grand entrance from Glebe Point Rd to George st.
Just a few uglies to fix up now.....

Well, the archaelogical excavation of the site by researchers has been happening since late 2000, and continued until about November last year - it was the largest urban archaelogical dig ever in Sydney.
The actual construction of the buildings however has only been happening since about early last year - the archaeological research process was still undergoing while the early stages of construction were happening!
Here is a picture of the site in September of last year:
http://www.australand.com.au/allaire/spectra/system/mediastore/400x297_apts_syd_quadrant_update.jpg
So basically, the complex has only been under construction for about a year now!

I will actually get to go right past the site next week as part of my Geography Excursion, so I should hopefully have a definite answer.

Yeah, I walke past the site yesterday and they've taken down the boardings at the base and it looks like they're starting to work on the shop fronts at the street level. Still some work to do as all that's there is blank walls and in some cases no floors.

Not bad, but the green mesh actually made the tower look better.

Some very good news !
All of the scaffolding on the restored buildings facing Broadway has been removed to reveal a wonderful 60 odd metre long facade !
Each of the 7 or 8 individual buildings have been fully restored inside and out and each have been given their own specific exterior paint job. They look bloody great when driving along B'way.
The stretch between Glebe Pt Rd and the CBD has never looked better. A very rich mix of historic buildings.
I noticed to that the City Of Sydney is advertising their Development application for the upgrade to the Broadway streetscape (along with Oxford and William sts) so it should be a very different place in a few years time !
I will try to get pics sometime if no-one else has.........

I understand what you're saying Fab's. A bit more dark green in the finishing touches could have looked good. Not that I dislike what I see. It's great seeing some height in that part of the neighbourhood!
Here's a pic I took yesterday from Glebe

Thos housing commission buildings should be in the ozscrapers jail where they belong.
Quadrant is looking quite good, despite the abscence of some of the greenry.

Alot of the scaffholding still remains on the western side.
And walking up broadway, you could barely see the complex. You cannot really tell that it even exists.

Your right about it. You can build scrapers yet maintain the streetscape which makes a particular area unique.

At street level, a lot is happening and being revealed as the hordings come down.
A lot is happening at the top of Blackwattle Tower too - a very complicated construction.
Beginning with everybody's friend - the brass ball lightning rod:
