This summer I've been to Lausanne, for 1 day only as I worked in Geneva and has some time only during weekends. So, on the 16th of July I decided to visit this city I hadn't known much about. I just wanted to explore "one more" city and add it on the list of my visits. I was surprised a lot by discovering a very beautiful city with so various architecture.

One of the points of interest was, of course, metro. The point is that the Lausanne metro is the only one in Switzerland and it's completely automatic.

There're no any staff (at least noticed) in metro. Tickets are distributed aotomatically so are driven the trains.

The rolling stock is, if I'm correct, the MP89 typical of Paris, but trains here consist of 2 cars only.

I had the opportunity to explore only 1 line out of 2.

Some pictures of Lausanne-Gare station.

And one interesting thing. Prior to announcing the next stop, they play a sound that is thematically connected to the corresponding area (e.g. sound of coins, or clatter of hooves or whatever).

No, unfortunately not. I wanted to but I completely forgot when admiring this city. Moreover, there was gymnastriade (didn't remember well the name) and a man I met there wanted to show me the finals.

I promise to keep this thread updating.

Nice pics, had fun in this metro as well a couple of years ago...also, if I recall, Lausanne is the world's smallest city with a metro system.

So, we're arriving at Bessières station, which is situated right under the old Bessières brigde. I was astonished by how they've matched ancient architecture to advanced modern technologies.

That's how the frontal part of the train looks like. No drivers.

As the trains are fully automatically operated, you can approach the windscreen and see what happens at the front.

This is the current public transport map,

Geographic: TL (http://www.t-l.ch/images/pdf/plan/tl-plan-reseau-geographique.pdf)
Schematic: TL (http://www.t-l.ch/images/pdf/plan/tl-plan-reseau-schematique.pdf)

The two wide pink lines are the current subway lines (although for the most part m1 line runs on the surface)

There is also a plan to convert the LEB line (the suburban train line running north, it's a wide black line running north in the geographic version) into an almost metro-like system by increasing frequencies, but some administrative stuff had delayed the start of the works.

I'll try to take some pictures too!

There are also very advanced plans to start building a new tramway line from the city centre to Renens (to be extended to Villars-Sainte-Croix) as well as three high-capacity bus lines (first ones in Switzerland), a third full metro line and u/c there's a new railway line being added between Lausanne station and Renens to allow for higher frequencies and a new train station in Malley, in between these two stations, where a large-scale urban development is taking place.

This is how the new infrastructures will add to the city:

Wide Black lines: existing subways
Single black line: the existing CFF railway lines, with Malley station in the middle between Lausanne and Renens
Green line: tram
Blue lines: high capacity buses
Red line: the LEB railway line being converted to semi-metro
Yellow line: the third metro line

The orange line was the tram line alternative to building the new third subway line.

Overall, there are A LOT of things going on in the city, especially given its relatively small size, and not just on the infrastructure level but also on general urban developments.

The T1 line will not be steep, and tramways can handle 100 ‰ ramps (the M2 reaches 120 ‰).

Pont Bessières, lots of pictures taken from different angles. This combination of such a high-tech means of transport and ancient architecture appeals to me most of all.

The gradients are indeed a major issue. Part of the M2 line (between Flon and the lake) used to be a rack railway, and a funicular before that, which is why the locals called it the "Ficelle".

That's what it looked like:

Maybe coz Lausanne's Metro is so small?
Anyway it would be great to have here pics of buses and trolleybuses also :)

So a quick question - can someone identify the name of the street?

There is a shamefull "to be corrected" instead of proper naming for more then 1,5 years...

Wow, Lausanne Metro.

This is the first (and currently the only) metro rail system in all of Switzerland.....and my look at it, so clean and modern......and wow ALL STATION have the 'doors' (at least for line M2). Nice :)

Btw, can something like this be done in other areas of Switzerland?

^^ The thing is, a subway line is much more expensive, but since Lausanne is built upon several hills and with a very considerable slope from the lake to the top of the city, building a tramline lake-mountain direction (South-North) isn't feasible unless the line is meant to be built along the slope (East-West, like the one to Renens I mentioned before) or by having a very winding and long path that wouldn't make sense time-wise for travellers, and even then a tyre-subway had to be built because normal trains wouldn't be able either to go uphill. None of the other major Swiss cities (Zurich, Geneva, Basel and Bern) have such hard geography, so I don't think any other city will build a full subway system in the country.

There was a project in Zurich back in the 70's or 80's but it was abandoned in favour of the tram after the citizens organized a referendum against it and in favour of the trams, however Zurich city does have a rapid-mass-transit system by using the train lines and the high number of stations distributed all along the city, mostly used by suburban network trains, but in Switzerland you can jump in any train you wish that stops between the stations you've bought the ticket for, even if say it's a german ICE, so frequencies are really high, on the order of a subway (3-4min) to go to the city centre.

So, be active in posting comments. ;)

There's some pictures of M1 in here: M1 (http://www.urbanrail.net/eu/ch/vd/img/metro-m1.htm), as well as the LEB and M2.

So a quick question - can someone identify the name of the street?

http://transphoto.ru/photo/318312/

There is a shamefull "to be corrected" instead of proper naming for more then 1,5 years...

This photo was taken a Lausanne, place Chauderon (looking west). The road signs point towards 'Pont Chauderon'.

City views nearby Croisettes station which is terminus and situated high above. From there, you can't even feel that the city itself is below. You just can't see it. Only Leman lake and the mountains at the French side.

I won't dwell upon that too much. But I'll start a new thread on Lausanne to show you my view of the city.

Near Croisettes station there's a bus terminal (Gare routière) where busses travel to other towns and cities. The name of Moudon sounds very rude in Russian... Indeed. But the Man is stunning.

By the way, this borough is very well viewed on Googla Maps, the way it is detailed is absolutely impressivr. Go there and see.

Now, back to the metro.

Thanks for giving me the link but I prefer to start a new thread on my own to show my vision of the city. :)

Let's carry on.

Now, we're arriving at Sallaz station. It is interesting that it is actually onground but covered. Right after it the train goes out to a short flyover after which it enters a tunnel and goes underground. The lenght of the open part is some 200 - 300 m, you can measure it at Google maps.

The station itself. As you can see, the platform is between the rails, which is more typical of Soviets metros rather than Western systems.

http://img-fotki.yandex.ru/get/5413/82260854.14c/0_6e5c5_5325832d_XXL.jpg (http://fotki.yandex.ru/users/night-city-dream/view/452037/)

The next post will be about the surroundings: it is also worth seeing as when I was there, there was a construction site nearby, with a junction being built. but the most interesting in my opinion, apart from the city itself, is rails. There are rail switches that are seen from above. That's especially interesting taking into account that trains run on tyres.

Thanks you Vaud for map!

For now, only the section between Renens and Lausanne-Flon (green) is confirmed, and it will be a tram.

For the section connecting the Blécherette with downtown (yellow), the tramway option is stillborn, and gave way to the Metro option, the same type as line 2. The M3 would double the M2 between Flon and Lausanne station and a new hub at Place Chauderon is envisaged. This project is very close to being confirmed.

The M3 is confirmed by the Vaud government, with the creation of an extension of the future tramway "Flon-Renens" directly to Bussigny.

Route of the M3. The M2 and M3 are side by side between the station Lausanne-Flon and Grancy, to solve the saturation of the strategic section CFF Station - Lausanne-Flon in 2020. The M3 will serve the plain of La Blécherette, where a district and various public facilities are provided to thousands of new residents and jobs. Inauguration scheduled between 2018 and 2020

I wonder if the rolling stock will be based off the Paris MP 05, or if they will use a different design. It almost seems that if the new line takes over a portion of M2, that I would take it that they would end up using rolling stock that is very similar to what is already on M2, which is based off the Paris MP 89.

^^ well, they will actually share some stations so obviously the model will have to be very similar to the current one, maybe even the same if it's possible with some small modifications which are going to be also implemented in the current trains.

More to the point the non American way!

I'm carrying on, if I may.
Now, Sallaz station as it is inside.

The station is covered but still onground indeed. The roof can be walked on.

In July 2011 there was an ad campaign of Swiss elections - and I was living there for a bit less than 1.5 months. So, the ad consisted of a slogan saying "Determine the face of Switzerland". Sometimes I noticed strange variations as earrings, women lips, thick beards etc.

The station is not typical of Lausanne metro as the platform lies between the tracks:

The ad was not ill-timed as it is now. Pity, I didn't have time to share the shots in time.

A dustbin. There's a nice designed grill between the ladder and the floor to avoid water accumulation on the floor itself.

I'd read on this forum (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=981118) that the M3 was going to be light rail. Have they definitely decided on a metro ?

I think it was posted earlier that a portion will be Metro (a part of it overlapping with M2), and the other portion LRT.

Hi! M3 would be exactly the same technology that M2: with the train MP 89 TL (http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/MP_89_TL) (based on the MP 89 CA (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MP_89) from Paris): being fully automatic without the use of any driver or cab and with rubber tyred (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rubber-tyred_metro).

Between the stations "Grancy" and "Lausanne-Flon", M2 and M3 operate on two distinct parallel route to relieve the overloaded line. The rate will be every minute on this section. Between "Ouchy" and "Grancy", the two lines are on the same route.

Neat renderings of M3.

I would guess that the rolling stock for the new line would be derived from the newer MP 05 from Paris. The MP 05 is basically a carbon copy of the MP 89, but with many technological advancements (including air conditioning). Since Lausanne already has the MP 89 derivative (MP 89TL), I can only guess that the new stock will be a derivative of the MP 05 (MP 05TL).

It would only be logical that the next rolling stock would be based off the Paris MP 05, unless the transit authority chose a different stock (highly doubtful).
