I figure it would make sense to have a list of all on-going skyscraper projects in NYC (under construction, proposed, and approved) for reference. I'll put down the critical info on the towers, like height, stories, general location, dates for construction, links to threads in this forum, etc. If I am missing something, please post the info and I'll update it. Also if I have any incorrect information, notify me, don't be afraid ;) Let's start it off...

There are of course many many more but I gotta draw the line somewhere.
Again, if you have any additional information, please post it. I'm especially interested in what's going on at the Con Ed Site, as well as Brooklyn and LIC. Also there are many more towers proposed like in the WTC that don't have specifications.

Thanks alot, this is amazing work!

I'm gonna sticky this thread so it remains on top and will look at the details later on, I think we have a few threads made on some of these that aren't listed.

You think we should include (if available), one small rendering of each?

Sticking this thread is a great idea! :)

Yeah, there's probably a few threads that I've missed, I'll scan them over and see which ones I need to add.

I'll add a thumbnail for each, if they are available. :)

Damn con ed site is taking for ever to materialize. When it comes through it will do alot to stretch the "wall" was i call it (midtown) east. Just like the far west-side development will stretch the wall west.

505 Fifth Avenue is that 30 story "boutique office tower" which is being built on the corner diagonally across the street from the Ny public library in Bryant Park.... right down the street from the BofA site. It is currently still going up.

You can find it by searching at skyscrapers.com ... it doesn't have a height so it has been listed at the end. Also there are renderings at wirednewyork.

actually there's a building UC on 1st avenue in Carnegie hill, or whatever the name, it's uptown around 96th street, but the last time I've seen it, I think it was topped out, I want to make pics of Gramercie Mansion, so I'll go see that building too.
The problem is I don't know the name, though it didn't seem high, 30 stories at max.

Wow. Some pretty awesome looking buildings ready to pierce the sky in NYC. I'm from Toronto, we're experiencing a building boom here like no other time in our history, and it's good to see NYC booming like it is, especially after all the S hit the F in '01.

Our problem here is that our tax system and the way cities are managed by the provincial and federal governments are very outdated. The city has very little power to make it's own decisions or to follow through on long-term plans. This makes even small decisions very painful and slow because a vision can't be designed and executed, even though there are many bright minds with the motivation to do so. Toronto gets the vast majority of the country's immigration, big events, homeless and gets no money for it. In fact, the provincial government actually fails to pay the city what it owes because the financial arrangement is so complex and inefficient that it is difficult to hold the province accountable. It's a disaster, quite frankly. To compound the problem, the city is so strapped for cash that they can't fight it. To give you an idea, money flows out of the city to other levels of government at a rate of 27 billion dollars a year (CDN, about 23b US). That is the net rate, meaning that it takes into account all the money that comes back to the city in the form of transfer payments.

Sorry if this is long-winded and maybe in the wrong thread, but can someone enlighten me as to the tax system and power divisions in NYC? That is, what taxes does the city control, what do they need permission for from the state and federal governments and what can they change on their own? The great thing about NYC is the vision it seems to have, and the power to get it done. We need that here desperately. Please help your neighbours to the North!!! Our government is sucking the life out of us, and not only that it's DAMN COLD HERE!!!

I'm amazed the city still has room for all the new projects. I wonder how many require some form of site demolition before new construction can begin.

Anyway, keep at it New York. Dubai, Shanghai and Hong Kong may be getting a lot of supertalls and have great skylines from a distance, but no city holds a candle to New York at street level.

theres over 200 listed demolished buildings on emporis. thats a city's worth. there are probably hundreds of buildings under going demolition in the city right now.

besides, NYC will have more supertalls than HK, if you look at whats proposed for HK on emporis, over 500 ft theres maybe one building I believe. I was surprised to see that myself. They dont have any supertalls in the works, theres only one u/c right now as well.

I just checked emporis. Hong Kong has 2 u/c over 1,000 and 4 complete. They have 3 u/c over 500ft with hardly any proposed. Thats shocking.

NYC has 3 u/c over 1,000 and 2 complete. 2 more proposed (WTC 2 and 3). over 500 ft, they have tons u/c, and proposed/approved.

do the math.

well am a New yorker in the county of the bronx, nyc and i could say that the CBD of Lower Manhattan And Midtown Manhattan which are the biggest in the United States...i believe they have reached their carrying capacity..Am afraid to say, but i think NYC is staying behind in the race...they need to start investing up here again as they used to in the 1920-1980's!things have slow down lately..the only noticable project is the WTC and the S.A.Subway!

I love New York, its the only city in USA that is so similar to be own home, London. probably as both cities have so many links especailly in finance but i gotta say at the momment there is no where like Dubai in the UAE, i work in London & now Dubai and it is a different world with a very forward thinking & very positive outlook toward the future. If you havnt been there try it before it gets ruined by mass tourism.

Hotel and condo tower to rise at 839 Sixth Avenue

14-MAY-07

J. D. Carlisle Development Corporation is erecting a 44-story mixed-use tower at 839 Avenue of the Americas between 29th and 30th Streets.

The project will have a 250-room hotel operated by the Fitzpatrick Hotel Group and 320 residential condominium apartments.

Perkins Eastman is the architectural firm for the development.

The hotel will occupy the first 8 floors and long-term-stay units will occupy floors 9 through 13. The residential condominiums will occupy floors 16 through 44.

The project is seeking a special permit for an underground garage and the local community board recommended approval March 8, 2007 and the Borough President recommended approval April 5, 2007. It is also seeking permission for a plaza with an open air cafe and the community board issued a favorable recommendation February 8, 2007.

A rendering of the building indicates that the hotel portion of the project will be clad in a bronze-colored glass and the condo section of the tower will be clad in a clear glass. The tower will be distinguished by two vertical "fins" in the middle of its north and south faces.

The site was formerly occupied by a parking garage and two-story store buildings.

Perkins Eastman's other recent projects include the Cielo tower on the southwest corner of 83rd Street at York Avenue, and the Centria at 14 West 48th Street, both for J. D. Carlisle, and the Jade at 16 West 19th Street.

The project is expected to be completed in 2009.

Nice work with all the new threads and the naming convention, Jack. I've been thinking for a while about how NY's development news subforum needs a shot of adrenaline. Most of the activity takes place in the WDN forum, but I think the local forum can definitely give the World forum some competition if the threads are ready and willing. With respect to Chicago, we have some of the same threads in WDN and in the local subforum, and it works out quite well in that the threads in both forums see plenty of traffic.

Thanks Kevin, I'm trying. If I have all the info here, it's gonna also be easier to get it transferred to the portal. The Chicago forum is an excellent example of what I want this forum to become, the NYC threads are usually just talked about the WDN you're right. Hopefully the WTC forum when the construction picks up steam will lure some people over here.

I also really need to get my ass moving and take frequent updated pics.

don't know if you already know it, but the austrian architect wolf prix from coop himmelblau said in an interview that he/they are currently working on a skyscraper/highrise in nyc.

F.Z.: What is the project are you working on at the moment?

W.D.P: At the moment we are working on a highrise in New York.

F.Z.: Would you like to explain this project?

W.D.P: It is located right next to the Norman Foster building on the Eighth Avenue and Fifty-fifth Street and it will have a twisted shape, it's a hotel and apartments, with a a very distinctive appearance. I would like to make a statement: architecture now is an occupied territory, occupied by the building industry, by the business clients, by money. An architect today has to decide whether he will go into the resistance or will be a player, will be on the side of the money. I think that good architecture can only exist when the architect decides to go in the resistance.

Joseph Rose Plans Huge Hotel Across From Hudson River Park

BY ELIOT BROWN | FEBRUARY 19, 2008

The former director of the Department of City Planning in the Giuliani administration, Joseph B. Rose, has big plans for a full block on the far West Side, as he has filed an application with the city to build a hotel of more than one million square feet at 260 12th Avenue.

In a building permit application filed with the Department of Buildings recently, Mr. Rose and his Georgetown Company list plans for a 66-story, 828-foot hotel on the site, currently zoned for light manufacturing (unlike condo towers, hotels can often be built in manufacturing zones).

The lot sits just a block south of the West Side rail yards and across the street from Hudson River Park; Mr. Rose sits on the board of directors for the state and city agency that oversees the park, the Hudson River Park Trust.

The building would be Mr. Rose’s second major undertaking along 12th Avenue in recent years, as he was a partner in the development of the highly acclaimed InterActiveCorp headquarters, the wavy, Frank Gehry-designed office building at 18th Street.

However, his planned development on West 29th Street is sure to draw anger from some in the Hudson Square community 40 blocks to the south. The city had initially targeted Mr. Rose’s site, known in the community as Block 675, to receive a sanitation garage currently housed in the footprint of Hudson River Park.

In 2006, the city reversed course in the name of cost, choosing instead a site at Spring and Washington streets in Hudson Square, where it would put the combined garbage facilities for three districts.

Residents and landowners of Hudson Square have protested the decision, saying that the facility will harm the emerging district; the community board in Chelsea had agreed to have the garage go on Block 675, and the city has almost all the needed approvals there, they contend.

“This flies in the face of the public interest,” said Michael Kramer, a lobbyist for multiple landlords and businesses in Hudson Square.

However, the director of real estate at the Department of Sanitation, Daniel Klein, said that the cost savings would be substantial. “We get a lot more for less money at Spring Street,” he said.

Mr. Rose did not respond to requests for comment.
