Korean bred: New bakery franchise to open in 2012

Korean bred
South Korean bakery franchise Tous Les Jours is set to make its debut in the Kingdom next year, after locally based CBM Corporation signed a royalty deal last week.

The deal, signed by CBM and the bakery’s operator, CJ Foodville, last Thursday, allows the Cambodian company franchise rights to Tous Les Jours. “We will offer high-quality products and the growing demand for such products is evident in the country,” CBM general director Chy Sila said, adding that he expects Cambodian customers to comprise 80 per cent of the clientele.

CBM is set to open three Tous Les Jour units in Phnom Penh before the close of 2012, with the first launching in the second quarter. The estimated investment in its first flagship store will be about US$500,000, according to Chy Sila.

Officials at Blue Pumpkin said they were not concerned about the latest market entrant. “If Tous Les Jour is focusing on Phnom Penh, it won’t be a problem because we only have two shops based there. We focus more on other areas of the country [such as Siem Reap],” Marketing Manager Theresa Bangcawayan said this week.

Tous les Jours is a French name, which means in English “Every day”. Tous les Jours is explained to be fresh – fresh every day.

Sangvat Pisak, Operations Manager at Tous les Jours, said the word fresh here focus on the bakery which is always freshly cooked.

Tous les Jours was first opened in Korea in 1997 and quickly become famous locally and overseas. By now, there are nearly 2000 branches in Korea.

Internationally, it has also present in the US and some countries in Asia such as Philippine, Malaysia, Vietnam, and now Cambodia.

The grand opening in Cambodia was on December 1, 2012.

“Tous les Jours has a unique symbol,” Mr. Pisak says. “What you see and buy in Tous les Jours in Cambodia is not different from those of other countries even the shop decoration.”

What you can buy in this bakery shop is bread, cake, beverage, and sandwiches.

There are at least 300 kind of bread, and clients can choose between sweet, European, Onion, cripes, savory, donut, and so on.

Gift cake, muffins, butter and mouse cake, cake piece, fresh cream and choco fresh cream cakes are also on the menu.

According to Mr. Pisak, the food in Tous les Jours is special because of its design, taste, and quality.

Before the shop was opened, a Research and Development team was hired to discovered what taste Cambodian people prefer.

As for the quality, the raw materials are selected from other countries and chosen according to brand name and good quality.

“We do care about the health of the costumers,” Mr. Pisak says.

“CBM has tried to bring Tous les Jours in Cambodia to provide new choices to Cambodian people as well as to foreigners, with good prices and a place where customers can feel like being abroad.”

Tous les Jours is located along Monivong Boulevard: #35-37, Street 214, Phnom Penh, but will soon open another branch on Sihanuk Boulevard on late January 2013.

TOUS les JOURS opens No.1 store in Phnom Penh

http://eng.ajunews.com/view.jsp?newsId=20121218000461

South Korea-based CJ Food Ville’s bakery brand, TOUS les JOURS, has opened its first store in Cambodia, as part of its plan to broaden inroads into the East Asian market, company officials said.

The store opened in the capital city of Cambodia, Phnom Penh, on Dec 16.

The 54-seat store, located in the gourmet street, Monivong Boulevard, is in a form of “half cafe and half bakery,” a company official said.

“After a month of trial operation, we posted sales which are 1.5 times higher than expected. Prospects for our business in Cambodia are bright,” the official said.

“As Cambodia’s economic growth is steady, the number of middle-class people is increasing and foreign residents are moving in, we can expect to see a miracle just like the one we saw in Vietnam,” he said.

TOUS les JOURS has also run stores in other countries including Indonesia, the Philippines, the U.S. and China. It said it plans to open at least five more stores in Cambodia next year.

BreadTalk cafe to be vocal on local pastries

Durian cream puffs anyone? A new coffee and bread cafe that promises to create new delicacies with local cuisine is set for the streets of Phnom Penh, as BreadTalk joins a line of international establishments eager to expand cafe concepts to locals in the country.

BreadTalk, a Singapore-based bakery store, is set to two stores in the capital this year, including their biggest worldwide: one perched at the top of the Vattanac Capital Building and the other on Diamond Island.

The chain was founded in 2003 and now has 600 branches spread over 16 countries. They specialise in breads and cakes, including the signature ‘Flosss’, a cream-filled bun topped with floss, and intend to create new delicacies to appeal to the local market. Teresa Kochel, chief operations officer at CamCorp hints that durian might be on the menu.

“We offer a price range affordable to everyone, with buns costing only $ 1.50,” she said. “We have something to appeal to all wealth classes.”

The flagship store will be one of the largest BreadTalk stores around the world, Kochel adds. Unlike its sister stores in Singapore, Phnom Penh’s BreadTalk also offers people a place to sit down and enjoy their meal, and escape from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Apart from that, the city’s BreadTalk stores will retain the same look and feel as the other bakeries. Samantha Tan, brand development manager at BreadTalk, said the bakeries will be in a rustic style, with soothing colours and patterned mosaic floors.

“All of our stores will have the open kitchen design. We will also look for street corner locations, to maximise the view of the bread-making process,” she said.

BreadTalk’s flagship store announcement came with the official announcement of the company’s partnership with CamCorp Capital Group, which would give the Phnom Penh-based F&B operator franchise rights to BreadTalk.

The company plans to open its first store in July 2013 at Vattanac Capital, and another store at Diamond Islands Riviera this year. They also plan to have at least 15 more across Phnom Penh by 2020.

“We know this will be a huge success,” said CamCorp chief executive Jackie Thai. “We are ready to deliver and be number one in the market.”

BreadTalk is the latest to join in the bakery café fad in Phnom Penh, following Korean franchise Tous les Jours’ entry into Phnom Penh in November last year.

Yes, at first I was confused with the two, realized they were different companies until I found out on the newspaper.

Breadtop is an Australian company owned by two brothers originated from Hong Kong, while Breadtalk is a listed bakery based in Singapore with outlets all over the world (except Australia).

I'm happy they opened a shop in the capital but their food is nothing to rave about. It's not that good.
I still prefer a European style bakery with croissants, baguettes and fruit tarts with a cappuccino.

Bayon's french bread is ok, but no where as good as those in Cabramatta, Australia.

Bayon's and Lucky Supermarket's sandwiches/toast, to me, is no where as good as Tip Top, or even those $1 a loaf type in Coles/ALDI of Australia.

Somehow, the Cambodian way to make these bread does not suit my appetite.

ABC (Asian Bread and Cake), which comes from Vietnam, makes very good bread, and all those bread shop in Cabramatta, I believe is Vietnamese style.

Bayon Bakery is the biggest local chain established long time ago, their bread varieties, in-store environments are very different compare to Breadtalk and Tous les Jours.

Breadtalk and Tous les Jours offer the others a place to sit down and enjoy their meal, it is more like a place for young teenagers to hang out, a combination of bakery and cafe.

Tip Top is gross.

It might be, but it is still one of the best selling brand in Australia.

I havn't buy those $4 a loaf bread for a long time. I almost always buy those Aldi/Coles/Woolworth's own cheap brand, which cost about $1, and those are way ahead of Lucky's.
