Today, 2,000 light years after its completion, the 86,000 capacity Borg Al Arab Stadium near Alexandria staged its first senior match at competitive level. Egypt hosted Mozambique in a World Cup 2014 qualifier in Group G (CAF).

Ironically, the match was played behind closed doors after the suspension of all football activities in the country following the Port Said massacre that rocked the country in February 2012.

This has got te be some sort of a 'primeur'.

This area of the stadium, that would have been allocated to the Ahly Ultras, displayed 74 in huge red digits against a white background, together with the pictures of those who lost their lives after the final whistle in an alleged premeditated murder attempt and political ploy in Port Said earlier this year.

The Egyptian FA and Interior Ministry allowed 20,000 Ahlawy to attend, though the match was boycotted by Ahly’s hardcore fans, seeking ‘justice’ for those responsible of the atrocities.

This is the first time in its six year old history the 86,000 capacity Borg Al Arab has staged a match at senior level that has not been played behind closed doors.
