Thanks for those. You sure spent a long time photographing the subway. You should be taking in the sights in Markham instead!

Nice pics!

Downsview is the best looking station IMO but it is the poorest placed interms of prox. to developed areas.

LOL - NOT

Man, Downsview does look nice, but no reason to go all the way out there.

^ Sure there is: catch the bus to YorkU. If they ever extend the subway, the station is as good as dead, though.

Dupont station rules baby! can't find pics though

heres a cool transit site I found for the TTC (http://transit.toronto.on.ca/transit.cfm?tt=subway&id=5701)

Why is the Downsview station so large? Were the builders expecting development to go up around it?

Why is the Downsview station so large? Were the builders expecting development to go up around it?

Yes, they were, and it is (slowly).

Downsview serves 2 purposes:

1) Get closer to York U. A good goal which is easiest reached one station at a time. The unfortunate thing is that we haven't done anything in a while.

2) It was meant to "spur" development on the empty fields adjacent, and to serve Downsview Park -- which it has. There are 3 or 4 low-rise (6 to 10 stories) buildings go up in that region every year.

Between the Pope's visit and the SARS concert, Downsview actually has respectable numbers for those years as a trip generator (as opposed to people connecting to a bus route). It's just that it happened to handle it's load all on one day rather than spread out through the year :)

It was once said that Downsview Station could very well be a diamond in the rough in the future as developement occurs.

Actually, Downsview could (or still may) become a transportation hub - with Spadina/University line extended to York Univ. (Steeles) and new Sheppart line going here.
I've never understood the idea behind of first urban park (and it's crappy implementation) but one day the area itself might get much higher density and the station might be right in place.

Thinking about TO subway...
I guess that somewhere in the future we will need to build Don Mills Subway line - from Seneca through Sheppard/Don Mills hub, further south to Ontario Science Centre, East York and ideally through new Waterfront to Union, or even to Ontario Place.
Thios would be a real trigger for Waterfront development.

I doubt Don Mills has the density to support a subway. A large section is just business parks mixed with the Don Valley. The Eglinton line, on the other hand, is way overdue.

Don Mills actually has a higher ridership than the eglinton West bus... it could also take pressure off the busy Yonge line

But at the current rate it will probably never get built.

Don mills does not have the ridership to currently support even streetcar. The only route that does is Finch. However, Don Mills/Thorncillife is in my opinion one of the denses areas that could really benefit from some form of rail transit. Much more so than any route in York Region. I really like the area as well. Just riding up don mills, its pretty tall + dense than most expect. Just looking at the area driving on the 401 just before the 404 entrance (where the road slopes down) is very amazing.

I would have to agree with Scarbmike.

Possibly above grade LRT to take advantage of the views. Thorncliffe would benefit from it, but the section between Fairview Mall & Eglinton doesn't really have that much room for future development. Unless all those precious trees come down. I would personally prefer a Eglinton line that twists south to thorncliffe.

Don Mills... NOT a priority.

Extension to York U now! Cheapskate government :bash: :bash:

Definitley an extension to York U. makes the most sense.

The Don Mills transit corridore is a worthy idea and it ties into a plan that once existed called the Downtown Relief Line. The allignment of this line would have gone up near the DVP to Seneca Collage and past the Sheppard line. That section I just described is not in a picture provided but you can use your immagination.

Click here (http://s4.invisionfree.com/Highrise_Canada/index.php?showtopic=78) to read about it on a post I made at a different forum.

Here's what the Toronto subway was supposed to look like in the near future (it's never gonna happen imo.)

This is highly unrealistic. York and Eglinton make sense. Some other areas could use a ROW streetcar.

samsonyuen
December 18th, 2004, 04:47 PM
no, that map was created by someone's fantasy interpretation of how the subway should be.

I think the subway should expand into York U, go up Keele into Vaughan City Centre, across to Yonge and 16th, head south to Yonge and Hwy 7 , and then Yonge and Steeles. That'd make it easier to get to York from the Yonge line, and get people riding on the Spadina line more. Then we should expand the Sheppard line to SRT, with stops at Consumers Rd., VP, Warden, Kennedy, and Brimley before dipping down to SCC. And then maybe we can think about Eglinton West to Oakwood or further to the airport or something else.

Roch5220
December 18th, 2004, 05:02 PM
^I think they should build to york, and then stop. Then complete the sheppard line, and then add more streetcar routes, possibly don mills. Then restart eglington line. IF there has to be 905 subway extentsion, extend bloor to MCC, and then create streetcar/LRT along Hwy 10 and Burnathrope (or even dundas). There is more density currently at MCC than there ever will be along/near Hwy 7.

If you take it to 905, the feds and the province will trip over each other to fund the TTC.

We neeed to look at those screwball Europeans and their above ground 'subways' and better use of what is already paid for.

Buster

That map is one fly-popping, cream-dream, fantasy. Sweet.

Seriously, Subways are pretty damn costly but an extension to York is long overdue. LRT's with ROW's are the cheaper way to go.

"screwball Europeans"

what the fuck does this mean anyway? and why do you like this term?!!

Homer J. Simpson
December 18th, 2004, 08:50 PM
^He's trying to be funny.

Anyways, an LRT system would do just as well along some of those areas.

alexs
December 19th, 2004, 12:04 AM
LRT can easily be extended to markham rd - the corridor is there - then it can go down to connect with GO/VIA station - or to go south from Kennedy to connect with GO station. It will help to these coming from East (Oshawa, Ajax etc.) to commute to offices in Scarborough without using 401.

Our environment would be much cleaner if we had this kind of system and we would'nt have to get stuck in traffic for hours! :sleepy:

Homer J. Simpson
December 19th, 2004, 12:30 AM
^Definately and when you consider that most people in the north end of town who drive with our current system would use public transit if they had this kind of set up. It would take alot of cars off of the road.

The Lakeshore line would be great since it would drastically reduce traffic on the Gardiner, not to mention it would give me a station right in front of my house.:D

It makes alot of sense because it would take pressure off of other lines.

The truth is that the north side of the city needs something to make intermidiet and long trips across the city faster. I live near Weston Rd and the 401 and most of my neighbours that I know commute to NYCC via the 401. If there was a fast and efficient alternative that the TTC could provide them, they would take it in a heart beat.

Some parts of the city are not served well by HRT/LRTs, just buses which don't do alot for long distance travel.
