Thelème October 24th, 2004, 11:24 PM we have the same thing in Milan... and we are used to call it: "tram"
Nephasto October 25th, 2004, 02:56 AM Lol.
He only showed the tram part of it.
http://www.urbanrail.net/eu/por/porto-map.gif
The only line operating right now is the blue line.
In the thinner part of it (Senhor de Matosinhos - Senhora da Hora), it's like what you see on the 2nd image, like a tram, and independant from road traffic.
In the thicker part of the line (Senhora da Hora - Trindade), it's just as any other metro or train on the surface. (Casa da Música station is underground, and there's a tunnel between Lapa and Trindade stations)
On the even thicker part of it (Trindade - Estádio do Dragão) it's underground.
ZielonaGora October 31st, 2004, 12:43 PM i think it is a great idea to built the metro system like in Porto, the semi-metro and semi-tram type is far cheaper that the normal metro so it can be built muchfaster and serve more areas. in the city centre under groud and outside above ground, on the street level or elevated. similar idea had german in Ruhrpot, Koeln and Stuttgart :)
Vertigo October 31st, 2004, 07:32 PM It's indeed similar to the Stadtbahn concept in Germany. A fast tram, running underground in the city center. Clever concept, combining the advantages of a metro (very fast in the city center) with the advantages of a tram (cheaper to build).

Glass, inox or inox-like materials, plain and almost one coloured walls, seem to be what characterizes modern portuguese arquitecture today. The aim is to convey cleaness, peacefulness and tranquility to the surroundings. Yet, I think a portuguese architect would explain it to you much better.

Morten M January 13th, 2005, 03:01 AM What is the driving speed in the different parts of the line? (Underground, Tram and "normal train")
Eletrix January 13th, 2005, 11:56 AM WOW!!! Fantastic PORTO!:) Very, very, very GOOD!
Petronius January 13th, 2005, 01:40 PM The ideas behind this lightrail system are as follows:
1-No rail/road junctions WITHIN the city itself. Even when the trains travel at surface level within the city the rails never cross any roads or even pedestrian walks. It goes underground in the city centre for obvious reasons(Medieval borough, the streets are TOO freakin' narrow!!!! ).
2-In the suburbs(Matosinhos, Maia), the lightrail becomes just like a regular Tramway, with the rails at exactly the same level as the rest of the roads, and where car/train junctions can occur regularly, however the trains ALWAYS have the priority over all the rest.
Answering your question, and taking all this into account, in the suburbs, the average speed of the trains is at least half of that inside the actual city. I can't give any figures though. I estimate an average of 32 Kmph Suburbs and 64 Kmph within the city. I might be wrong though(it takes 12 min to travel from where I live (Senhora da Hora) to the city centre(Boavista) - about 8Km apart. )

This post really explains well how it works! :)
As for the average speed, i don't know it, but it can't be 64km/h inside the city, because that would be one of the fastest metros in the world! ;) (I must remember you that 60km/h is the average speed for Madrid's line 8, which is really fast and with few stops).
Anyway, the vehicle's top comercial speed is 80 km/h.

Many German light rail systems (Stadtbahn) have exactly the same system, running as a metro in the city center and as a tram in the suburbs.
Here's an example in Essen:

Paulo2004 January 17th, 2005, 12:11 AM Let's hope for Porto residents and tourists alike that its connection to the Oporto Inter. Airport is completed without delays.
Balsen January 17th, 2005, 01:03 AM I think that's the most successful project of rail public communication system in the new Europe. It combines the fast/street tram and the subway, cars are 100 % low floor, low suspended, look really modern and nice - in opposite to heavy typical subway cars... Because of construction this cars are more flexible, they can easily get underground and make shorter curves.
Actually that's my favourite solution in city public transportation. :)

Yes, it's like a stadtbahn.
However, in that 2nd picture looks like the stadtbahn share it's route with car traffic, which means it can be stuck in traffic.
This doesn't happens in Oporto, because it never shares tracks with the cars. There are only road intersections with traffic lights allways green for the metro.

Yes, sometimes Stadtbahn networks share routes with car traffic. Most of the cases they have their own right of way, though.
This doesn't happens in Oporto, because it never shares tracks with the cars. There are only road intersections with traffic lights allways green for the metro
That's a good thing. In that way, you can achieve the speeds of a "full" metro (=fully underground or elevated) at a fraction of the costs.

In Essen line U17 is an upgraded tram converted to light rail.
In the suburbs it mostly has its own tracks but there are a few places where the roads is not wide enough so it shares roadspace with the other traffic.
At one location the trams / light rail vehicles cross a high bridge, and here too they share the road with the other traffic - but special traffic signals let them go first.
Nowadays this route uses "high floor" lrv's where passengers can enter without climbing steps - whilst this was good for people who need easy access it also meant that at least one tram stop had to be closed because it was not possible to build proper platforms.
btw, both the lrv's seen here originally came from London's Docklands Light Railway. They were sold to Essen because they did not comply with British safety standards for use in the underground tunnels built for the line to Bank. For Essen they were fitted overhead wire collection devices (pantographs) and at each end of the vehicle a cab for a driver (in London the DLR trains are driven by computers - this is not possible in Essen on lines which also use the roads with cars, lorries, pedestrians, etc!)

Petronius June 8th, 2005, 12:29 AM here's a map of Phase 1 and 2 of Porto's lightrail/metro, taken from their website!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v247/PedroCid/mapametroporto.jpg
Phase 1 is still under cosntruction (only one part of it is already in use). Two new lines are due to open until the end of this year. Phase two comes next! Thanks to this Porto will be an extremely well-deserved city in terms of public transports. Bus lines are actually epected to decrease their frequency by 30% thanks to the metro .

Filipe_Golias September 16th, 2005, 11:26 PM Tomorrow, the Porto Metro's yellow line will open to the public.
This line will connect the north of the city (University Campus 3) to the city of Vila Nova de Gaia (on the other side of the river Douro), through the center of Porto. It will be the most important since it will carry thousands of people who live in Gaia but work in Porto, as well as the only line which crosses Porto north-to-south.
The most important section is the Douro-crossing, on the top table of the XIX century Dom Luís bridge, who had to suffer strong renovation and reconversion works.

Petronius January 18th, 2006, 04:36 PM yeah it is nice... typical Sotto Moura and Siza Vieira Architecture...
despite 4 availables lines already there's still one under construction (Centre-Airport) and another 3 or 4 in project. one of them involves a whole new above-surface line connecting Casa da Música to Foz (by the sea) , and there's also one involving the construction of a new bridge + an underground line connecting Casa da Musica to Campo Alegre (Universities) to Arrabida (Shopping Centres and Residential ZOnes).
To note that Metro do Porto is now a "State" company. Before, it was in the hands of Porto's "Junta Metropolitana"(Mertopolitan Council).. I am unaware of the advantages of this.

Are you sure? When were the works in Porto started?
The Madrid metro first opened in 1919 and since then has undergone extensive modernisation and extension. In the last eight years over 111km of new lines have been added including 63 stations which may be accessed by elevator. The total network consists of 228km and has 161 stations.

the point is how much it costed. And what they say could also be just about projects starting from scratch... which would mean expansions, etc. don't count.
Besides, that's what they said in the newspapers.
Clashman January 21st, 2006, 01:47 AM That's 3.27 billion Euros for how many km of line? The reason I'm asking, is that I'm really kind of intrigued by this idea. In the Twin Cities, they're looking to build a line connecting downtown Minneapolis to downtown St. Paul. I'm a little worried about the proposed method, (street level lightrail downtown sharing with another line that goes from Minneapolis to the airport), and the possible traffic problems it could create, and was wondering how affordable this would be in comparison to the current plan.

The Metro do Porto network, which is more than 37 km in length (when completed it will have 70km), was designed with the people passengers and their commuting needs in mind. Every day, it transports tens of thousands of passengers in perfectly comfortable and safe conditions and with excellent efficiency. In 2005 18,5 million passengers used the metro. Inaugurated in 1/01/2003 with only one line, it has already transported 34 million people.

Paulo2004 June 29th, 2006, 12:36 AM Welcome.
Balsen June 29th, 2006, 12:46 AM according to press release on winning by Bombardier $114 Million US Contract For 30 Light Rail Vehicles From The City Of Porto, Portugal:
Bombardier Transportation announced today that, as part of a consortium including Vossloh-Kiepe it has won an order from Metro do Porto in Portugal for the delivery of 30 bi-directional Bombardier FLEXITY Swift low-floor light rail vehicles for the city’s 60-km Light Rail Transit system. The overall contract is valued at approximately $148 million US (115 million euros), with Bombardier’s share amounting to some $114 million US (89 million euros). Deliveries of the vehicles are scheduled to take place between 2008 and 2009. Bombardier will also be responsible for the maintenance of the 30 vehicle fleet during a 5-year period.
The new vehicles will be built for the suburban lines of the system and once they are in operation the Porto Metro will be able to improve its services to travellers. With top speeds of 100 km/h the Bombardier FLEXITY Swift light rail vehicles will reduce travel time from the neighbouring cities to the centre of Porto. For additional comfort the new 37.1-meter long vehicles have seating for 100 passengers, 20 more than the current vehicles, are equipped with air conditioning and have designated wheel-chair and bicycle areas.
The first phase of Metro do Porto’s new Light Rail Transit system was awarded in 1998 by Metro do Porto to the Normetro consortium, for the construction of 4 lines, 60 kilometres of track, 15 underground stations, 63 surface stations and 72 Bombardier FLEXITY Outlook vehicles. In addition to the vehicles Bombardier was also responsible for delivering its Cityflo 250 traffic management system, the traffic control room and the design and equipment for the maintenance depot. The first phase is now fully operational and a new line connecting to the airport as also been opened. The system, which has achieved a 94% punctuality ratio*, has completely changed the speed and ease of movement within the greater Porto area. Today, an average of almost 150,000 passengers uses the system everyday*.
Filipe Almeida, Chief Country Representative, Portugal, Bombardier Transportation, said: “We have built an excellent relationship with Porto Metro over recent years thanks to the quality of the product we supply and the service we deliver. We are very proud to have been chosen to support our client as they take this further step towards the optimization of their network. We at Bombardier are committed to the Portuguese market and will continue to offer our world-leading mass transit traffic management and vehicle solutions to its cities.”
Walter Grawenhoff, President, Light Rail Vehicles, Bombardier Transportation, said: “This order for the city of Porto demonstrates once again its trust in Bombardier’s engineering expertise and the continuing success of the Bombardier FLEXITY family.”
Transport authorities worldwide have already ordered over 1,500 Bombardier FLEXITY trams and light rail vehicles, of which more than 1,000 are in successful revenue service. Vehicles of the FLEXITY Swift family are operating operation in cities like Cologne, Germany, London-Croydon, UK, Stockholm, Sweden and Istanbul, Turkey as well as in the Netherlands.
Bombardier is one of the most important suppliers of rail equipment in Portugal, being involved in some of the country’s most important rail projects. The Portuguese State Railways most modern commuter train fleets in the Lisbon and Porto regions, the entire fleet of the Lisbon Metro, the Porto Metro Light Rail Transit System and the Signalling Safety System of the entire Portuguese rail network are some fine examples of Bombardier’s strong presence in Portugal.
Bombardier Transportation has its global headquarters in Berlin, Germany and operations in 38 countries. It has an installed base of approximately 97,000 cars and locomotives, primarily in Europe, the world’s largest rail market. The company offers the broadest product portfolio and is recognized as the leader in the global rail sector.

Yup. To the existing "classical" tram system, dating its origins from 1901 but mostly built in commie times (22 lines on 167 km of single track, but in not-so-well condition, and with level road crossings), will be added a new track leading under the main railway station, with 3 new underground stations. They call it "fast tram", it would be a kind of "pre-metro". I hope it'll be a good start to upgrade the whole system in the future with a financial help of EU.

Arpels July 10th, 2006, 01:48 PM is a good start by now wtih the time become better for sure!!

kenny_in_blue July 10th, 2006, 06:07 PM I have nothing against trams but underground is faster (atleast compared to Gothenburg trams and Stockholm underground). So a underground might actually be a good investment even though it costs more.
cal_t July 10th, 2006, 10:30 PM It's more light rail than tram to be honest, the videos I have seen show better acceleration than any of the Melbourne trams I use everyday...

Wilhem275 July 20th, 2006, 02:48 AM I just finished reading the entire topic... My God, this metro system really deserves my best compliments!
That's incredible, so modern and also so good looking! Porto's metro should be an example for many cities all over the world! :applause:

Well...this is a view to the place where Metro do Porto has one of its biggest problems...The place where lines A, B, C and E join at the same point to go onto the common track between Senhora da Hora and Estádio do Dragão. Sometimes vehicles have to stop on red signals, to allow other vehicles to pass.

I don't know if there is any topic on the forum, for the old trams of Porto...
I have here 1 photo...Today there are 3 routes with the old trams in porto, used essentially by tourists...We can say that they're mainly touristic routes.
They use also the "andante" systemm, the same used in Metro do Porto.

Clashman July 29th, 2006, 03:38 AM I have nothing against trams but underground is faster (atleast compared to Gothenburg trams and Stockholm underground). So a underground might actually be a good investment even though it costs more.
If you read carefully, you will see that it actually is underground for most of the downtown area, and then switches to above ground once it reaches further outside the central city area, where traffic isn't going to be as bad. This gives them most of the full speed of a metro, while reducing construction costs significantly by building above ground outside of the CBD. It's really a pretty solid plan, in my opinion.
chico_pastor July 31st, 2006, 02:32 PM In my opinion, is not needed to be underground when in the suburbs it goes on "high" speeds, without being underground. For example, London Underground has most of it's route above ground on the suburbs, because there's no necessity to have high costs and higher risks at the construction and in emergency cases.

you have "vision" for sure ;)
its exactly what they planned before the construction. FULL speed at city center, and not underground lines in suburbs to be cheaper and possible to construct more and more... beeing a metro system that reaches at very parts of the city.
not obstant that.. the project costs 1,7billion euros.

It is important to say, that all the Metro do Porto network is 100 % accessible to wheel-chairs and disabled people. Besides that, most of the steps and the platforms have guide lines for blind people. The vehicles also have no barriers and they have the floor at the level of the stations.
Here are some pictures of one of the elevators of the network at Casa da Música station.

Although, I think Trindade level 0 is a little bit bigger than the usual.

I think they should have rebuilt the tower or just built a new one. It kind of looks like a dwarf next to the giant.
