Malapit na ang August and it's kadawayan time!!!
Learn more about Davao's greatest festival...
Kadayawan, a Bagobo term for celebration of a bountiful harvest, Kadayawan is derived from the aboriginal word "dayao" which means good or "madayaw," things that are of great value or is profitable, superior or beneficial. The festival activities include fruit and flower show, trade fair, tribal/civic/military parade, traditional sports activities, horsefight, Search for Mutya ng Davao and street dancing. Dubbed as the "festival of festivals," the Kadayawan sa Dabaw Festival is probably the country's biggest festival today.
The event was participated in by different dance groups from all over Mindanao and the colorful float parade was the country's biggest with 84 participants from the city's different walks of life. Although already a customary practice of the indigenous people of Davao, the thanksgiving festival was institutionalized in 1986 to unite the Dabawenyos after the turbulent Martial Law years. It was then called Apo Duwaling, a contraction of the famous icons of the city, namely: Mt. Apo, durian and waling-waling. Two years later, it was renamed Kadayawan to better reflect the merry spirit and indigenous theme of the celebration.

rustyboi July 27th, 2005, 11:22 AM SINULOG
The country's biggest spectacle
Sinulog is a dance ritual in honor of the miraculous image of the Santo Niño. The dance moves two steps forward and one step backward to the sound of the drums. This resembles the current (Sulog) of what was then known as Cebu's Pahina River. Thus, in Cebuano, they say it's Sinulog.
More than just the meaning of the word is the significance of the dance. Historians now say that Sinulog, which is of pagan origin is the link between the country's pagan past and its Christian present. Lets trace it's history.
Historical accounts say that before Portuguese navigator came to Cebu on April 7,1521 to plant the cross on its shore and claim the country for the King of Spain, Sinulog was already danced by the natives in honor of their wooden idols and anitos. Then Magellan came and introduced Christianity. He gave the Santo Niño ( image of the Child Jesus ) as baptismal gift to Hara Amihan, wife of Cebu's Rajah Humabon who was later named Queen Juana. At that time, not only the rulers were baptized but also about 800 of their subjects. Unfortunately however, shortly after the conversion, Magellan went into a reckless adventure by fighting the reigning ruler of Mactan, Rajah Lapu-lapu, with only a handful of men. He died in the encounter. That was on April 27,1521.
The remnants of Magellan's men were however able to return to Spain to report the incident and the possibility of conquest. It took 44 years before a new group came and started the formal christianization of the islands. Miguel Lopez de Legaspi arrived in Cebu on April 28, 1565. His ships bombard ed the village and in one of the burning huts, one of his soldiers named Juan Camus found inside a wooden box the image of the Santo Niño lying side by side with native idols.
Historians now say that during the 44 years between the coming of Magellan and Legaspi, the natives continued to dance the Sinulog. These time, however, they danced it no longer to worship their native idols but a sign of reverence to the Santo Niño, which is now enshrined at the San Agustin Church (renamed Basilica Minore del Santo Niño).
Of course through the years since 1521, the dance was a small ritual danced by a few in front of wooden idols or before the Santo Niño. In fact, at the Santo Niño Church where the image is consecrated, only the candle vendors could be seen dancing the Sinulog and making offerings. During the Santo Niño fiesta which fall on the third Sunday of January, children dressed moro-moro costumes also dance the Sinulog. This was really no big event for Cebu City.
In 1980, however, David S. Odilao, Jr., then Regional Director of the Ministry of Sports and Youth Development (MYSD), organized the first ever Sinulog parade. He gathered a group of students, dressed them up, taught them how to dance the Sinulog to the beating of the drums. It was a small parade really which went just around the Basilica but it caught the imagination the City of Cebu, which then thought of making the Sinulog a festival that would rival all other festivals being held yearly in the country.
Sinulog '81 was then organized. Practically all sectors in the Cebuano community got involved. To distinguish the festival from the popular Ati-atihan Festival in Aklan, the organizers decided to use the parade to depict the history of the Sinulog which, as had been said, is the dance which links the country's pagan pasty and Christian present. Seven floats were created to depict seven different periods of history. Each float were followed by dancers wearing costumes depicting the periods. They all danced the same beat the Sinulog parade started at 1 P.M. at the Cebu Provincial Capitol and ended about midnight at Fort San Pedro-Plaza Independencia area. And the show continued until the wee hours of the morning.
This made Sinulog the country's biggest spectacle. So every year thereafter, the Sinulog parade and activities became bigger and better.

Mall wins top prize in floral float tilt
By Jenny Molbog-Mendoza
THOUSANDS of people trooped to various streets of Davao City Sunday to witness the Floral Float Parade, won anew by NCCC Mall of Davao, whose entry sent "a message of unity and progress."
The parade, one of the highlights of Kadayawan sa Dabaw, capped the week-long festivities.
People from neighboring provinces and cities and foreign tourists visited the city to join in the Kadayawan celebration and have an actual experience of how festive and colorful the float parade is.
On Saturday, thousands of people also flocked the city streets to witness another highlight of the festival, the Indak-Indak sa Kadalanan, participated in by various cultural dance troupes from all over Mindanao.
There were 23 floats of various establishments and institutions who joined in Sunday's parade--13 of which joined in the competing division while the remaining 10 were non-competing.
Of the 13 competing entries, five entered in the large category while the eight were for the small category.
NCCC Mall topped the large category, followed by SM City Davao and Chowking, also last year's 2nd and 3rd placers, respectively.
The Floriculture Industry of Davao Inc. (Fidi)'s entry won first prize in the small category. RDL came in second, and Sul Orchids copped third place.
The parade started at 7 a.m. on R. Magsaysay Avenue. It then passed through the streets of C.M. Recto, Bonifacio, Legaspi, San Pedro, exited on Quezon Boulevard and ended at the PTA Ground.
Among those competing in the large category were NCCC Mall, SM City Davao, Rogemson's Bambini Cosmetics, and Chowking.
While Greenwich Pizza, SUL Orchids, Floriculture Industry of Davao Inc. (Fidi), RDL Products, Club Vee Dub Davao, PCEEM, Leonardo Direct Sales, and SK Federation participated in the small category.
Marjun Marcelo Cristobal, the designer of SM City Davao's float, earlier said that with the way he interpreted the theme "Sulay Subay sa Buhing Kabilin", the company has a huge chance of grabbing the top prize.
The float of SM City Davao featured a family, all clad in native costumes.
"This means that in preserving our culture, everything should start in the family," he said.
Aileen Gajo of the Public Relations Department of NCCC Mall, said their float sent the message of unity and progress.
"This year's float features the Philippine Eagle and its offspring, representing a conscious effort of conserving it for the next generation. Our float was designed by Romeo Chua," she said.
Cristobal and Gajo refused to divulge the cost of their floats.
Criteria for judging include symbolism, 20 percent; design, 40 percent; and execution, 40 percent.
Prizes for the winners in the large category are P200,000 for the first prize; P150, 000 for the second prize; and P100,000 for the third prize.
In the small category, winners received P100,000 (first prize), P75,000 (second prize) and P50,000 (third prize). (JMM)

A celebration called Dinagyang
THAT is all you can hear on every 4th weekend of January in Iloilo. A very popular tagline used by Ilonggos to express their warm participation during the "Dinagyang" celebration. A commemoration in honor of Señor Sto. Niño whom Ilonggos believe was very miraculous in times of famine and drought.
"Dinagyang" came from the root word "Dagyang" which means to make merry. A religious and cultural activity, it is a celebration of Ilonggos whose bodies are painted with black in effect to imitate the black, small and slender Negritos who are the aborigines of Panay. The warriors are dressed in fashionable and colorful Aeta costumes and dance artistically and rhythmically with complicated formations along with the loud thumping and sound of drums.
On Jan. 24 and 25, the streets of Iloilo City will once again come alive as the Ilonggos commemorate the annual festivity. This year's celebration is themed, "Devotion in Motion."
Before, Dinagyang was called Ati-atihan like that of the Kalibo festivity. History tells that it started when a replica of the image of Señor Sto. Niño was brought to the San Jose Parish Church in Iloilo from Cebu. The people of Iloilo honored the coming of the image and then became devotees. Until they made the day of the Image's arrival as his feast day which falls on the 4th Sunday of January. Since 1968, it was already considered a yearly celebration, culminated by a nine-day Novena, an Ati-ati contest and a fluvial procession on the last day.
It was only in 1977 that Ilonggo writer and broadcaster Pacifico Sudario named the riotous celebration "Dinagyang" to make it unique from other Ati-atihan celebrations.
As years went by, the celebration continued to be highlighted by a mass at San Jose Parish at the break of the dawn; by a "Kasadyahan" which is the opening event of the celebration, also a merrymaking but is a dramatized dance presentation about the Aeta's existence, the landing of the 10 Bornean Datus in Panay and the colonization; and by dances and more merry making which have become a tourist attraction.
As more and more tribes from the barangays, schools and nearby towns and provinces participate, the contest became more competitive in terms of costumes, choreography and sounds. The tribes compete for the following Special Awards: Best in Discipline, Best in Costume, Best in Performance, Best in Music and Best in Choreography.
These are aside from the major awards for the champion, first runner-up, second runner-up, third runner-up and fourth runner-up.
Participating tribes learn to design artistically and with ingenuity in making use of Ilonggo native materials like dried anahaw leaves, buri or coconut palm leaves and husks and other barks of Philippine trees. Choreography was studied and practices were kept secret. Sounds were seen as an authentic medium that keeps the tribes going in uniform.
They also include a brief dramatization of how Christianity was brought to Panay and the arrival of the 10 Bornean Datus telling about the exchange of the Aetas of their land for the Borneans' Golden Salakot (native hat) and a long pearl necklace which is also parallel with the Kasadyahan celebration.
During the celebration, people participate with the Kasadyahan. Some dressed in Aeta costumes, some paint their faces with black paint, some put on colored artificial tattoos and wear other Aeta ornaments. At night, there are public dancing on designated areas.
Dinagyang is an annual event, when the whole town rejoices, shouting their pride of being an Ilonggo and telling their culture. It is a joyful looking back to the past. It is not just a celebration, it is a religious evangelization. Going back to Iloilo is more like a past fulfilled and a looking forward for future celebrations. It is our culture. The Aeta culture. That's why it is painting the town black.

KulasKusgan August 28th, 2005, 04:12 AM The man behind this year's festival
Aurea A. Gerundio
SUPERVISING the Kadayawan festivities is one big task that require a leader who can direct everything that's going on, especially on this 20th Kadayawan Festival when just about every facet of Davao is being celebrated -- indigenous and contemporary culture, arts, music, agriculture, food, games, nature, trade and development.
But for this year's Kadayawan sa Dabaw Foundation Inc. (KSDFI) president Arnold D. Navales, planning the events in the Kadayawan festivities was not so difficult to handle.
Navales said most of the events included in this year's celebration have been introduced in the past celebrations already and thus they now have some working system they are merely following.
"Every year, the Kadayawan Foundation is just innovating most of the events in the previous Kadayawan festivities. Nagdadagdag na lang ng mga events," Navales said.
Navales said Davao City is rich with indigenous traditions that could be revisited in various ways.
"The theme Subay, Sulay sa Buhing Kabilin, which means to trace and try the living heritage, imply that the Dabawenyos have their existence a long time ago and here were are looking for their lost culture, arts and tradition and live with it. It is through a celebration of bountiful harvest that we can experience it," Navales said.
Navales attributes his ability to head the KSDFI to his inclination toward arts and culture.
When he was president of the Philippine Institute of Certified Public Accountant (Picpa) Davao Chapter in 2000, he said, he had organized several cultural presentations during assemblies.
Navales, who is presently the manager of the Systems and Internal Audit Department of the Davao City Water District (DCWD), said his inclination to arts and culture somewhat convinced the DCWD Board to choose him to represent the company to the KSDFI.
Navales refuses to claim all the credit for the activities in the Kadayawan celebration saying the success of the celebration is the product of a group effort.
Navales said the ample support from other KSDFI officials including Chair Susan Durano, Vice Chair Oscar Casaysay, Vice President Sylvia Alegria, Secretary Precy Sacriz, Auditor Ricardo Aguilar and other members of the board, City Tourism Officer Id Acaylar and Councilor Susan Isabel Reta has greatly helped in coming up with a very festive Kadayawan.
Navales did not miss the support from the business sector as well for he financial support.
Navales is thankful also for the support of Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte especially in making sure that the Kadayawan festivities will go on as peaceful as possible.
"The City Government gave P700,000 financial assistance pero hindi namin tinanggap kasi gusto naming na ang pera ay gamitin na lang para sa pagkain, panggasolina at iba pang kailangan ng police na magbabantay ng seguridad ng mga tao during the entire Kadayawan celebration," Navales said.
As Navales will turn over his position to the next president of the KSDFI next year, he looks forward as well to seeing a more vibrant and festive Kadayawan.
KulasKusgan August 28th, 2005, 04:14 AM Standing up for horsefights
Charles Raymnond R. Maxey
THE horsefight has for so long been one of the most exciting highlights of the Kadayawan Festival through the past two decades.
Every August of the year, when Davao City holds its thanksgiving for bountiful harvest, Dabawenyos are treated to this exciting battle between two stallions for one coveted prize: a mare.
Called the Bagobo horsefight since such diversion is part of the traditions of the Bagobo tribes, this is one of the biggest crowd-drawers not just for locals and lumads but also foreign visitors.
The thrill of a one-on-one battle of two stallions, kicking, biting and snorting is a display of strength and passion.
And like in previous Kadayawans, the Bagobo tribesmen and the people of Davao were expecting another horsefight this year.
They were in for a disappointment. The Bureau of Animal Industry jolted City Hall recently by sending a communication ruling that holding a horsefight would invite possible legal actions as this is cruelty to animals.
Apparently dismayed by the communication, Davao City Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte asked the opinion of the City Legal Office on the matter and found the same answer: The horsefight faces legal impediments.
This is among the prohibitions in Republic Act No. 8485 or the Animal Welfare Act of 1998. Section 6 of RA 8485 states: It shall be unlawful for any person to torture any animal, to neglect to provide adequate care, sustenance or shelter, or maltreat any animal or to subject any dog or horse to dogfights or horsefights, kill or cause or procure to be tortured or deprived of adequate care, sustenance or shelter, or maltreat or use the same in research or experiments not expressly authorized by the Committee on Animal Welfare."
Still, despite the legal implications, City Hall tried to push through with the Bagobo horsefight but the lack of venue forced it to suspend the event.
The argument being that horsefighting is an age-old tradition of the Bagobos and the horses, while they are wounded and bruised in the process are not killed.
Very much unlike cockfighting.
"We would have wanted to go on with the holding of the horsefight," says City Administrator Wendel Avisado, adding they intend to settle the argument in court. "The mayor wanted this to become a test case."
Avisado said the PTA would have been an ideal venue for the event, but the place is already full of activities like the Agro-Industrial Trade Fair. "The owners of other possible venues are also adamant because they ar afraid they will be dragged into a possible legal action," Avisado said.
"But the mayor had expressed his views. We would have wanted to hold it," Avisado added.
Bagobo tribe leader Datu Max Gabao said they tried to contest the BAI ruling by writing a letter to President Macapagal-Arroyo asking her to allow them to hold the horsefight.
Malacañang responded by referring the matter to the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples, but until now NCIP has yet to act on it.
Gabao said they have no choice but to forego the holding of the Bagobo horsefight this year. He, however, vowed to push through with the event next year.
"The horsefight is part of our culture," Gabao said. It is known that horsefighting is a long revered tradition of the Bagobo. It originated as part of an annual three-day celebration of their thanksgiving to the Manama (god) for bountiful harvest. On the third day of the thanksgiving, the different datus hold a horsefight to signify their respective strengths and influence.
In place of the Bagobo horsefight, the Kadayawan organizers will hold the tribal wedding this year where a total of 10 couples will be wed.
Duterte may have ran out of space this year, but he definitely is going to hold the horsefight in 2006 and challenge the law.
The Bagobo tribesmen, who look up to the horses as symbols of strength, are bent on keeping their culture and tradition.
The horsefight controversy, like the horsefight itself, is worth watching.
KulasKusgan August 28th, 2005, 04:15 AM Bringing back pride
Stella A. Estremera
THEY were forest people who under stood and respected the land and the creatures that live in it. They knew each forest creature by name and respected them and feared them for the power they have over people.
Even their musical instruments represented the sound of nature. The kubing, for one - that thin bamboo instrument placed in the mouth and tapped with the fingers to make music with -- is the sound of birds of prey.
But that was in the past.
Civilization cut down the forests that once provided for them and the land that nurtured them became a much sought-after property. Worse, the civilization that all people craved likewise deprived them of their culture and heritage and being a lumad meaning "of the land" became something to be embarrassed about.
But as more and more of their people are forgetting their heritage, a few are beginning to realize that it is only by retrieving this heritage that they will again become complete.
"I'm trying to retrieve what has been lost by bringing back our music and dances," Armand Bigcas, a Tagabawa, who hails from Baracatan said in the vernacular.
Tagabawa, he said, means "of the south".
It's not an easy task, he admits. The pride of being a lumad has long been lost as the young yearn to be as modern as the world is.
"It's sad, but in my family's attempt to retrieve our heritage, the most appreciative are those who are not even lumads," Armand, or Dodo as he is better known, said.
And so, he's starting with his family: a very talented one too...
His mother (whom just about every one of his lowlander friends calls Nanay), while claiming dancing the muscle-straining footwork now gives her arthritic pains, still danced well and she played a mean rhythm on the agong and sludoy, too, among other ethnic instruments. Nanay, however, is now going blind from age and can no longer perform as she did last year.
(Here's a trivia on ethnic instruments. The lumads in this part of the region, contrary to general perception, do not make agongs and brass bells although agongs and brass bells have always been part of their dances and music and costumes. These brass instruments and trinkets were actually from Maranaos who even in those days of yore were already traders.
The lumads got these from the nomadic traders in exchange for farm animals and produce.) The expert in ethnic instruments, however, is Dodo's Tiyo Ito who can whip up music like you've never heard before.
His teenage daughter Ace follows her grandmother's footsteps, dancing and thumping on the agong beautifully.
And the family proudly showed several photo albums of her debut - the salagkot kamagi - a coming out ritual for women of their tribe between the ages of 16-20.
Evening before bedtime at the family's ancestral land was spent listening to Nanay tell stories. Stories told by her parents that impart values and morals.
She also recalled the days before the war, the sufferings they had to endure during the war, and the harsh punishments their tribe meted on those who violate their laws.
Nanay recalled a couple who decided to marry even though they were relatives, a gross violation of their tribal laws and a shame in their eyes. The couple was isolated in a bamboo patch and was later chopped to pieces by the tribesmen, the penalty for such infraction.
Harsh though it was, it was the law and their people obeyed it. Admittedly, this can no longer be revived as there are the present-day laws to follow. But they still have their dances, their music, their costumes, and their traditions that can be retrieved.
"We can only protect our people and our land if we all understand and take pride in what binds us together," Dodo said.
Up in the mountains of Marilog, Matigsalogs, Bagobos, and Clatas are likewise going through the same harsh awakening of a heritage lost.
"When logging became rampant here, our forests were destroyed and Panayangan (the demi-god of the forest) abandoned us because we have abused our environment," Datu Noreto Embak, supreme tribal leader of the Matigsalogs, said.
They believe that they fell into greater dire straits when they were caught within the war waged by the communist rebels that saw their people taking arms as well as being massacred.
"Since blood has been shed without justice, then our forests have become barren. Panayangan has left us," Datu Embak said.
The tribal leaders explained that the supreme God, Manama, is what provides for all. Manama, however, has demi-gods (tinugyanan or helpers) that guide and provide for the various activities and endeavors a tribe embarks on.
Aside from Panayangan, there is Karang, the demi-god of love. This demi-god provides the blessings for those who seek to be married as well as intercedes for marital problems.
Timbalong is the demi-god for all creatures in the forests. Kalayag or Ibabasok is the demi-god for planting. Pamolingan is the demi-god for things that men craft for their livelihood, like their bolos. Pahilum is the demi-god for health. Mandalangan is the demi-god of war. Anip is the demi-god of harvest. Gamohamo is the demi-god of the waters. And Pantigum is the demi-god of fertility. Sahabikal is the demi-god of talent.
There is actually a 12th demi-god that unfortunately wasn't listed in the interview notes and time no longer allowed another trip for an interview. Heaven is Buhongan, earth is Panubaran.
The influx of Christianity was what first threatened their culture, they said, because Christianity especially Protestantinism that was what made great incursion in the hinterlands, only believed in one God. There was no room for their tinugyanan.
But they didn't know any better then and thus embraced Christianity decades ago. The hardships their people went through after the forests were denuded in the early 1970s, however, slowly made them think twice about how they have abandoned their beliefs.
"We are not pagans as we were called before, because pagans don't believe in the Supreme Being. We do," Datu Embak said. Aside from their beliefs in the spirits that rule their environment, the lumads also hold dear to their hearts their costumes.
Their clothes, they said, not only identify them and their culture, it also shows their present state of mind as a community.
It's in the color of their costume, they said. Blue, the predominant color that their menfolk wear these days means hope and peace.
The menfolk, on the other hand, only wear red when they are at war. That's why, they said, their menfolk these days no longer wear predominantly red costumes. There are other practices that they do without these days, mostly because present situations no longer allow these.
Pangayao (tribal vendetta) for one is now but a vague memory since they have again put up their tribal elders council where all misunderstandings are settled.
Among the Tagabawas, Nanay said, they once believed that the direction from which on hears the sound of an alimukon (pigeon) is a portent of what will happen to your day.
Nanay said if you hear an alimukon coo to your right, then it's a good omen. To your left, it brings bad tidings.
But that no longer mean much to them now. For one, alimukons are no longer heard regularly in their mountain homes.
The Matigsalogs and Bagobos also had what they called duway or having more than one wife, with the wife choosing the second, third or fourth wife. Their conversion to Christianity put a stop to that.
Now that their returning to their old ways, it's also no longer practical because life is hard for them these days, they can hardly provide for one wife.
In those days of yore, having more than one wife was practical because it was the women who worked the fields.
The menfolk were only for going to war and hunting. Thus, the more wives a man had, the more workers he had in the field. But that was before when the land provided for them.
Now they are wondering...
"A long time ago, only our women worked the fields and yet we had more than enough. Now, the all of us, including our children, work, but we cannot even feed ourselves," one Bagobo datu said.
In retrospect, they believe this is the punishment they are harvesting for forgetting their heritage, their culture and their beliefs.
"We have abused our environment, we have forgotten the past, and we became ashamed of our people and what we are. Now we are reaping God's wrath," they said.
They now look forward to better days by reviving their culture and heritage to bring back the pride their people once had.
"We have to stand up as our own people once more and we can only do that if we revive our past," they said.

TUNA FESTIVAL
Sept.1-5
General Santos City
Mindanao celebrates the king of all tinned creatures. There are contests for the best-dressed tuna, a parade of fishing floats and a sashimi night.
Fishing is the fastest growing industry in the city. It is in fact largely responsible for the economic boost enjoyed by the city today. Coming close to Navotas' daily fish landing volume, the city's fish port ranks first in terms of high value fish. The city proudly ships sashimi-grade tuna to Japan, Canada, United States, Hong Kong and leading hotels in Metro Manila.
It is also home to seven of the biggest tuna processing firms in the Philippines with a combined canning capacity of 570 metric tons a day. The city has now over 50 commercial fishing companies landing a collective volume of 8,000 metric tons of sashimi grade tuna per month. All these statistics and more add to the fore of the concept, that of building a trademark for General Santos City.
The Tuna Festival is not merely a spectacle but a venue to showcase the city's pride and meaning. In its entirety, it is a celebration of the ocean's bounty. Moreover, it is fortifying the tangible strength of the city, wherein collective spirit is the inspiration that underscores the leadership of the city's affairs. September 5, 1968 marks the inauguration of General Santos from a municipality into a city without changing its name.
From then until 1986, General Santos moved up from a third class City to a first class City. During those times until today, the agriculture and most especially the fishing industry flourished dramatically. What better way of remembering our charter anniversary than celebrating it with the very foundation that has led the city to where it stands now?

chymera00 November 24th, 2005, 11:09 AM 140 festivals and counting
Western Visayas may appropriately be called “Region of Festivals”with the quantity and quality of festivals that it has. As of the latest count of the number of festivals registered with the Department of Tourism Region VI, there are already 140 festivals existing in Western Visayas and the number grows year after year. If we include other special events that are also crowd drawers and tourist attractions, the number can easily double. The oldest and grandest festivals in this region are among the best festivals the Philippines can offer to the world. Ati-atihan of Kalibo, Aklan, Dinagyang of Iloilo City, Masskara of Bacolod City, Pagtaltal sa Jordan and Manggahan of Guimaras, Sinadya sa Halaran, Kahilwayan of Sta. Barbara, Iloilo, and Binirayan of Antique, to name a few, are among the most colorful festivals in the 7,107 islands of this country.
Our festivals in the region are named interestingly. Some names need no explanation especially to the Western Visayans but others have been named in such a way that even the young locals do not know how to give a thorough explanation because only the old people in the villages know what the name of the festivals mean. One thing is sure, some organizers cannot seem to have enough of a festival name such one festival name is shared by two or more municipalities despite advise from this office that they should not have the same festival name as an older festival in this region or country as the case may be.
Interested parties may contact the DOT Region VI for clarification about Western Visayas festivals.

lanztrick05 December 7th, 2005, 04:58 AM This festival is not popular as the Pahiyas Festival in Lucban but I think it's quite different.
Feast of San Isidro / Aranya't Baluarte Festival
Gumaca, Quezon
May 15. Huge arches placed on the strategic locations are lavishly decorated with the most colorful farm produce, local delicacies, horticultural products, palm fronds etc. This festival is different from Pahiyas sa Lucban – balwarte or arches are decorated with various agricultural products like suman, bananas, vegetables, buko, pineapple, root crops, and other fruits that would look-like chandeliers. These crop decor are pulled out by the people after the patron saint has passed. The feast of San Isidro Labrador in Gumaca can be traced up from the Spanish Colonial Period with old documents pertaining to this celebration of harvest. The three most beautifully decorated balwartes are given prizes.

San Diego de Alcala Fortress
Recognized by the National Historical Commission as a national treasure in 1981. The fort or better to be called Defense and Observation Tower was made of adobe with brick tile roof. This is the last one remaining of those built under the supervision of the Franciscan friars under the leadership of Franciscan Father Francisco Costein the latter part of the 19th century. This was built to help defend the town against attacks from sea pirates. It has 3 tunnels which connects the fortress to San Diego de Alcala Cathedral altar and the Convent beside Cathedral(now Holy Child Jesus College). The fortress was also used during World War II to protect the port to the invaders.

lewdsaint January 5th, 2006, 01:18 PM The most awaited annual cultural event in this part of the country is the Dinagyang Festival which is schedule to take place on Jan. 28-29, 2006. The Dinagyang Festival is witnessed by thousands of local and foreign tourists flocking the main thoroughfares of the City of Iloilo enjoy the colorful, exciting and pompous display of artistic talents of Ilonggos depicting their rich cultural heritage.
lewdsaint April 5th, 2006, 07:56 AM Battle of the Festivals in Manila
Sparks are set to fly at this year’s “Aliwan Fiesta” as once again, the Philippines’ grandest, loudest, and most colorful festivals come together to compete in the national championship of festivals on April 27-29.
"Aliwan Fiesta 2006" is shaping up to bring excitement to a whole new level this year. For the very first time, the Sinulog Festival of Cebu joins the ranks of dance contingents gearing up to unseat the three-time champion contingent, Iloilo’s Dinagyang Festival.
Will the newcomers, the Cebuanos of the Sinulog Festival triumph and finally break the winning streak of the long-running champions, Ilonggos of the Dinagyang Festival? Or will the Ilonggos go on to win four-peat? Which festival will reign supreme? Only one thing is for certain: the heat of the competition brought about by this much-anticipated rivalry makes this year’s "Aliwan Fiesta" worth watching.
Not only will the Sinulog and Dinagyang Festivals face off for the much-coveted R1M plum prize; the grand prize winner of this year’s festival also claims the honor of being named as the ultimate Philippine festival.
The Manila Broadcasting Company (MBC), together with the cities of Manila and Pasay and the Cultural Center of the Philippines, sets the stage for another sure-fire crowd-drawer as "Aliwan Fiesta" returns on its fourth year as the grandest national championship of all festivals.
"Aliwan Fiesta 2006" is set to bring together a record number of 30 dance contingents from all over the country, the biggest number of participants in its fourth year run.
The festival is highlighted by spirited street dancing native to the participating regions, exhibiting the richness and diversity of Philippine culture and tradition.
Thousands of the country’s finest craftsmen, street performers, and amateur models will gather to compete in Dance Parade Competition, Float Competition, and Reyna ng Aliwan beauty pageant.
Holding the reputation for giving the biggest cash prizes ever, "Aliwan Fiesta" pushes the limits by giving nearly R3 million this year.
The grand prize winner will get R1 million; with second and third runners up to win R500,000 and R250,000 respectively. The top 10 finalists will each get R50,000.
The fiesta will bring together the country’s most popular fiestas such as Pedrista Festival (Quezon City) Marikina Festival, and Pakalog Festival (Pasig) of NCR; Panagbenga Festival (Baguio City) representing CAR; Region I’s Pamulinawen Festival (Laoag City) and Agdamdamili Festival (San Nicolas, Ilocos Norte); Region II’s Sabutan Festival (Palanan, Isabela), Pinilisa Festival (Jones, Isabela) and Sambali Cagayana Festival (Baggao, Cagayan);
Region III’s Halamanan Festival (Guiguinto, Bulacan) Sto. Will the newcomers, the Cebuanos of the Sinulog Festival triumph and finally break the winning streak of the long-running champions, Ilonggos of the Dinagyang Festival? Or will the Ilonggos go on to win four-peat? Which festival will reign supreme? Only one thing is for certain: the heat of the competition brought about by this much-anticipated rivalry makes this year’s "Aliwan Fiesta" worth watching.
sounds exciting! actually, Sinulog Festival is giving bigger cash prizes than this. Sinulog just joined Aliwan Festival? why only now? hehe does it have a tv coverage? where in Manila is this btw?

rustyboi April 25th, 2006, 06:14 PM it was reported earlier today on TV about the government's plan in implementing DST as part of their Energy Conservation Campaign. nothing serious so far. during DST, clocks are turned forward an hour, effectively moving an hour of daylight from the morning to the evening. So if you work at the usual 8 am - 5 pm office hours, with DST it's 7 am - 4 pm. in this case, we can maximize the use of natural sunlight, thus lessening electricity usage for lighting etc.
i was told DST was implemented during the time of Pres. Cory Aquino. i don't remember a thing, was an infant back then. :D
Today approximately 70 countries utilize Daylight Saving Time. The only major industrialized country not to have introduced daylight saving is Japan.
personally, i find this rather exciting. something new for the younger generation. :) i must agree that we can benefit more should DST is implemented in our country. this will translate to significant savings on electricity but definitely not a permanent solution. What do ya think? i am hoping to hear your opinion regarding this. what are the advantage and disadvantage of DST? do u consider this a less drastic response to ease the impact of high oil prices etc.? Thanks!
kiretoce April 25th, 2006, 06:42 PM i was told DST was implemented during the time of Pres. Cory Aquino. i don't remember a thing, was an infant back then. :D
This is true, it happened the summer after my senior year in high school (1990), can't say that it did anyone any good though.
It's a bear during the first week of DST because it screws up your routine, but at the end you get at least one extra hour of sleep. BTW, when are they planning to implement DST?
Coffee April 25th, 2006, 07:07 PM Here's the article:
http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/storypage.aspx?StoryID=36711
I don't think it's a good idea. Daylight hours do not seem to be significantly different during different parts of the year in the Philippines. The reason that a lot of developed countries use DST is because they are in temperate climates, where there's a large variation in the amount of daylight versus darkess across the seasons.
xDieselJockx April 25th, 2006, 08:23 PM OH wow, you guys are following the trend now ha? I think it doesn't make much of a difference just like what coffee explained but it wouldn't hurt doing DST also IMO.
ryanr April 25th, 2006, 08:37 PM Here's the article:

I agree. The Philippines is near the equator so the need for DST isnt really there. We only get slight variations in daylight hours throughout the year and obviously we dont have four seasons (winter, spring, summer, fall). Implementing DST will only cause public confusion. But hey, its their call...i dont really mind, if its for energy saving purposes.
sista April 26th, 2006, 04:55 AM ^^ I agree too. DST is hard to implement since our daylight ours won't change, but for energy saving purposes, I think it will do good. It will definitely make it harder for me to wake up every morning (school starts at 7:30, with DST it might shift to 6:30) lol.
Æsahættr April 26th, 2006, 05:18 AM Um, we had it before and it was a disaster, right?
renell April 26th, 2006, 05:57 AM lol yeah the losing sleep thing is kinda hard, I don't remember getting real term breaks in the Philippines, here in Australia it is implemented during Terms 4, summer, and Term 1. It would be fun for most Filipinos to get more sunlight, perhaps until 7.30.
I don't think it'll be effective though. Here in Australia it is applied in New South Wales, but not in Queensland, where it is more tropical and closer to the equator
xXx carlos xXx April 26th, 2006, 06:00 AM no....ako nga nahihirapan pag adjust sa dst... pag magaadvance na ng 1 hour, kumukulang ang tulog ko...
Rence April 26th, 2006, 10:39 AM Agree!
JustHorace April 26th, 2006, 10:53 AM While we are in an oil crisis, it's okay for me.
kiretoce April 26th, 2006, 02:25 PM Here's a thought....if they wanted to save/conserve energy....why not make the work week shorter, like 10-hour workdays, 4 days a week?
JustHorace April 26th, 2006, 02:30 PM ^^That's included in the plan (4-day work week). According to the news, the gov't is not keen on implementing DST. They made talks with businessmen and they agreed upon changing the schedules of some workers para hindi sabay-sabay pumapasok lahat.
Dvorak April 26th, 2006, 03:24 PM yup.. we did have DST before.. was in 2nd / 3rd year h.s. back then..
was on effect for a few months.. then back to D.O.T.
beads_strawberries April 27th, 2006, 08:48 AM I think Daylight Saving time option is very much related to the option of a four-day work week that was implemented before through government agencies. All effective energy consumption measures should be done in order to help in the emerging oil crisis.
I think the best option the government would want to implement is to cut the tariff on the oil prices so as to lessen the public burden on the impact of surging oil prices. This will not prejudice the projected economic recovery we are experiencing now.
renell April 27th, 2006, 09:03 AM no....ako nga nahihirapan pag adjust sa dst... pag magaadvance na ng 1 hour, kumukulang ang tulog ko...
That's not the biggest problem, that would be just temporary. The bigger problem I would think is informing everyone of it, getting 80 million+ Filipinos to be in it.
pau_p1 April 27th, 2006, 09:18 AM just as we had before.. i didn't saw the benefit of it... except that we got our watches tangled up on what the time really is...
anyways.. during summer we experience longer daylight... currently the sun rises at 545am and sets at 630pm.. it will just give us longer daylight during this very hot season... how would it cause us to conserve energy when the sun is still up, companies still use their lights and airconditioning...
chixbebe April 28th, 2006, 10:00 AM One-stop RP festivals hub for tourists
ALIWAN Fiesta ’06, dubbed by organizers as a “cultural extravaganza,” brings to one venue the festivals of the regions of the country, making it possible for local and foreign tourists to watch and appreciate ethnic and cultural presentations without having to leave Manila.
The grand fiesta, which reels off April 27 to 29, gathers more than 4,500 of the country’s most talented artists, artisans, street dancers and muses to compete in various contests pitting cultures, traditions and beauties.
Organizers said the Aliwan Fiesta presents the perfect opportunity to experience first hand and taste what the fiestas are like outside of Metro Manila.
Organized by the Manila Broadcasting Co. (MBC), in partnership with the cities of Manila and Pasay and the Cultural Center of the Philippines, Aliwan Fiesta gathers the brightest, biggest and most colorful festivities in the unprecedented grandest fiesta in Philippine history.
The holding of the grand festival is made possible through the cooperation of San Miguel Pale Pilsen, Zesto One Tea, PLDT Budget Card, PLDT Super Bilis Kabit, Alaxan, Kremil-S and Rejoice Suncare Shampoo. Sponsors include Negros Navigation, Sulpicio Lines, Nokia and Western Union.
The highlight of the event will be a parade on Roxas Boulevard, to start at the Quirino Grandstand passing Rajah Sulayman Plaza and finally ending in front of the Aliw Theater at the Star City, CCP Complex.
Highlights of the Aliwan Fiesta are:
Baguio City’s Panagbenga Festival numbers are among the entries at Aliwan Fiesta, show-casing a multitude of colorful flowers that compliment the freshness of pine breeze that characterize the summer capital of the Philippines;
The Damili Festival of San Nicolas, Ilocos Norte features the agdamdamili dance, which honors the town’s ancient tradition of pottery dating back to the pre-Hispanic period; and The Pinilisa Festival of Jones, Isabela introduces the simple life in their fertile land rich in pinilisa (mountain rice) crops.

spacewagon1 December 22nd, 2006, 02:12 AM ADB: Dinagyang good for business
DINAGYANG Festival helped boost the business climate of Iloilo City, according to the Asian Development Bank (ADB).
The ADB recently cited Dinagyang as one of the best practices in managing cities, particularly in “effective public-private partnership.”
The citation is contained in a book entitled “Managing Cities in Asia.”
“Dinagyang continues to provide enormous benefits to Iloilo by showcasing the Ilonggo’s culture of excellence and unifying the community to work for the common good,” the ADB book said.
Dinagyang particularly established “workable partnership” among the City Hall, government agencies, San Jose Parish church and private sector-led Iloilo Dinagyang Foundation Inc. (IDFI).
It also involves a multi-stakeholder participation of large corporations, civic organizations, civil society, youth, professionals and the media.
The city’s grandest fiesta was also hailed for its hospitality to guests foreign and domestic alike.
“Dinagyang has been creating goodwill for the city by providing entertainment to tourists and visitors resulting in the doubling of tourist arrivals for the past three years as well as promoting international friendship by having foreign dignitaries as special guests.”
Mayor Jerry Treñas said several ADB executives might be gracing the highlight of the affair on Jan. 28, 2007.
“Over the long-term, the Dinagyang has created more jobs, increased income for the business sector and accelerated investments,” ADB stressed.
The Dinagyang basically means fully-booked hotels and other accommodation facilities, increased sales from small vendors to large business establishments as well as its “multiplier effect” to related industries and heightened promotions of giant companies.
Likewise, ADB said Dinagyang has becoming a medium for the local arts community to exhibit their talents and gain recognition.
Dinagyang’s “social artistry” was proven after the United Nations supported the festival to promote the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) to alleviate poverty.
“It has also instilled the value of discipline among members of the community who exert effort to keep Iloilo City very livable by maintaining cleanliness and continuous greening of the environment.”
The Dinagyang success, according to ADB is due to its extensive promotions, larger community participation, greater global exposure and improved reporting mechanism while the city government provides financial assistance and support services like police, health and sanitation.

kirby21 December 22nd, 2006, 08:00 PM Anthropologist says Dinagyang can identify more 'roots'
Anthropologist-Educator Alicia Magos said in an interview with the Philippine Information Agency that the Dinagyang can become a "well-rooted" heritage festival if organizers and tribe leaders try to do more research and interviews with indigenous peoples who live the culture.
Magos, who holds a doctorate in Anthropology and one who immerses herself in cultural communities, said that there are groups in Panay which the tribe performers can study and consequently depict their genuine culture in their performances.
She cited the beautiful epics of the Panay Bukidnon under the tutelage of Gawad Manlilikha ng Bayan (GAMABA) awardee Federico Caballero, of Bgy. Garangan, Calinog, Iloilo. From their lengthy epics the Dinagyang tribes can get authentic stories of the nature and customs of the people that can best exemplify Ilonggo tradition.
Caballero runs the School for Living Tradition (SLT) with the assistance of the Office of the President through the National Commission for the Culture and Arts (NCCA) in Bgy. Garangan, where he teaches the younger generation the various cultural rites and traits of Panay Bukidnon.
Magos said that with the Iloilo Dinagyang Foundation's thrust in promoting the Millennium Development Goals (MDG), the festival has projected social relevance, which must find expression in the cultural presentations of the Dinagyang tribes.
She added that housing, poverty alleviation and ecological balance, including gender issues and especially education, have indigenous expressions and implications from where the Dinagyang can find roots.
Magos appreciated the efforts of the Dinagyang Foundation as she wished it would lead to the point where foreigners who come to see the festival will not see a "poor substitute" of Ilonggo culture, but something that gives the Philippines a distinctive mark in global tourism, anchored on a spirituality and genuine devotion to the Sto. Nino.

kirby21 December 22nd, 2006, 08:02 PM Iloilo's Dinagyang Festival draws local, int'l audience, in Manila
The city government of Iloilo and the Dinagyang Foundation are all set to bring the country's best tourism event, the Dinagyang Festival, to international and national audiences on December 9-10, 2006.
This was announced by Dinagyang Festival executive director Ben Jimena after preparations were finalized in bringing the Dinagyang tribe and dancers to Marikina City for special performances hosted by Marikina City Mayor Marides C. Fernando on December 9.
The next day, the Dinagyang Festival and official mascot Dagoy will be at the Mall of Asia in Pasay City for the formal launching of Dinagyang 2007 and a press conference for international and national media exposures. Invited to the launching are Manila-based travel writers and news reporters of broadsheets, magazines, radio and television networks. Also invited are foreign reporters.
The launching is timely since thousands of foreigners are in Metro Manila for the upcoming ASEAN Summit to be held in Cebu on December 11-15, 2006.
The biggest shopping mall in the country is expected to be full of people to see the sights and hear the sounds of Dinagyang and Ilonggos who can not go home to Iloilo on January are invited to see the Dinagyang Festival. A photo exhibit and video presentation will be held the whole day at the Mall of Asia.
Jimena said that thousands of foreign delegates would still be in Manila waiting for the arrival of 17 heads of states on December 12 to go to Cebu. The foreign delegates through their Manila embassies were invited to see how Ilonggos celebrate the festival and venerate the Sto. Nino as official patron saint of Iloilo City.
Dinagyang's Tribu Atub-Atub will be focal performer to drum up the festivities slated in Iloilo City on the last week of January 2007.
Mascot Dagoy of Dinagyang is also slated to go around the major cities of the Philippines to invite and show-off the Dinagyang Festival in Iloilo City.
Jimena said bringing Dinagyang Festival, the recently recognized top tourism event by the Association of Tourism Officers of the Philippines (ATOP), is supported by the Dinagyang Foundation chaired by Lee Chuan and City Mayor Jerry P. Treñas.

kirby21 December 22nd, 2006, 08:04 PM UNDP-UN Habitat endorses Dinagyang Festival
The United Nations Development Program (UNDP), through its UN Habitat special project, has affirmed support for the world-renowned Dinagyang Festival this coming January 2007.
The city's famous festival is the only festival world-wide officially endorsed by UNDP.

UN funds Dinagyang
ILOILO City’s premiere celebration, the Dinagyang Festival, is the only festival to be funded by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in its aim to promote the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
Mayor Jerry Treñas said Dinagyang is the first festival all over the world to endorse the MDGs, the UN’s main global anti-poverty initiative.
“Dinagyang got P500,000 from UNDP. It is not really big but at least we have gained additional support and international exposure. We will be expecting more foreign tourists as well as visitors from UN to grace the festival January next year,” said Treñas.

Dinagyang Festival gets UN endorsement
By Maricar M. Calubiran
The United Nations (UN) will include in all its gatherings the promotion of Iloilo's Dinagyang Festival. The yearly festival was favored from among the other festivals in the entire world. This paves way for the city to receive P500,000 assistance from the UN.
Iloilo Dinagyang Foundation Inc. (IDFI) executive director Ben Jimena said he has written the UN to include Dinagyang in its Millennium Development Goals (MDG). Eventually, the festival was included in its MDG using "social artistry" as strategy.

Here is the official schedule for the forthcoming Dinagyang Festival 2007:
January 19 - Opening Salvo of the Dinagyang Festival at 2pm
January 25 to 28 - IHRRA Food Festival
January 27 - Kasadyahan contest
January 28 - Dinagyang Tribes contest
lewdsaint December 25th, 2006, 09:41 AM Dinagyang '07 to feature international ice show
Ilonggos will now have the chance to see at close range an international ice show with performers from other countries as it will be one of the main features of the Dinagyang Festival next year.
Businessman Lee Chuan, president of the Dinagyang Foundation, said the festival will bring for the first time, an international holiday on ice show to this city.
"This will add color to the Dinagyang celebration on January 2007 as Ilonggos will see the ice spectacle brought by the promoters here for the first time to perform outside Metro Manila," Chuan said.
Early reports said the P21-million ice show will perform first at the Araneta Center in Quezon City before going to Iloilo City for the Visayas performance one week before the Dinagyang culminating events.
Chuan said the Visayans, especially Ilonggos in Panay and Negros, are dying to see the ice show rated as the most spectacular and grandest show on earth.
Dinagyang executive director Ben Jimena said official mascot 'Dagoy' will be going around the country promoting the Dinagyang in several Philippine cities starting December.
Other activities include the fluvial procession to be made into a more extensive major Dinagyang event and the promotion of the eight Millennium Development Goals (MDG) of the United National Development Programme.
Dinagyang Festival was selected recently by the Association of Tourism Officers of the Philippines (ATOP) as the top tourism event in the country.
"The event has evolved through the years as a living festival that takes new things in strides as it invents, rather blends tradition with the contemporary and evolving into something different, something new, yet maintaining its inner soul and real essence," Jimena said.

kirby21 December 26th, 2006, 10:14 PM Dinagyang Pamukaw staged Dec. 16th
The downtown streets of Iloilo City once again reverberated with the familiar rhythmic beating of drums as 20 participating tribes paraded and danced in the streets of the city last December 16th for the traditional Pamukaw of the Dinagyang Festival 2007. The tribes gyrated and danced from the Provincial Capitol to the Freedom Grandstand here, showing metro residents a sample of their forthcoming repertoire. Mayor Jerry P. Treñas, members of the Sangguniang Panlungsod and officials of the Iloilo Dinagyang Foundation led by president Lee Chuan and executive director Ben Jimena, were on hand to lead the pamukaw, which literally means to rouse the residents and everyone to inform that the Dinagyang Festival is coming. The 2007 festival highpoints will be on January 27th and 28th, when the Kasadyahan and the Ati-atihan competitions unfold. However, there will be various other activities during the interim, the search for Miss Dinagyang 2007 and the opening salvo on January 19th. The pamukaw was highlighted with the banging of the big drum by Vice-mayor Guillermo de la Llana in behalf of Mayor Jerry Treñas, to signify the start of the Dinagyang season. The presentation elicited delight and smiles from both young and old who turned out in droves at the Freedom Grandstand to watch the 20 tribes rattle off short, impromptu performances. Other religious highlights of the Festival include opening salvo walk with Sr. Sto. Niño January 17th around the nine barangays; the Kasadyahan opening salvo on the January 19th; the re-enactment of the first arrival of the image of Sr. Sto. Niño the Basilica in Cebu also on the 19th; and the thanksgiving mass with all officials and participants of the 2007 Dinagyang Festival on the 29th. (PIO)

kirby21 December 26th, 2006, 10:15 PM ADB cites Dinagyang Festival
Mayor Jerry P. Treñas recently announced that the Asian Development Bank (ADB) has named the world-renowned Dinagyang Festival as one of the best practices in illustrating an effective public-private partnership in ensuring a successful major tourism annual event. Treñas said that the ADB included Iloilo City and the city's growth through the years in its two books: "Urbanization and Sustainability in Asia (Good Practice Approaches in Urban Region Development)" and "Managing Asian Cities." The two books showed the growth of emerging major cities in Asia and some of the best practices implemented within their respective areas. "I am extremely happy with the ADB recognition which is making things happen in Iloilo City," Treñas said. "Dinagyang Festival does not only signify performance of dancing tribes but, more specifically, the close cooperation and solidarity of all stakeholders. It is the festival of all stakeholders and a concrete partnership between the private sector and local government unit," the mayor added. The ADB book identifies the Dinagyang as having provided a lot of benefits to Iloilo, citing that it is "showcasing the Ilonggo's culture of excellence; unifying the community to work for the common good; creating goodwill for the city by providing entertainment to tourists and visitors; promoting international friendship; becoming a medium for the local arts to exhibit their talents; and has nurtured a workable partnership between the government, the church and the private sector." The book further stated that the festival has been a significant factor in bringing more jobs to Ilonggos and increasing the business sector's income. It has likewise accelerated investments in Iloilo City and has instilled the value of discipline among the members of the community. With this latest citation, Treñas congratulated all stakeholders and attributed the success to all Ilonggos for their hard work and cooperation. (PIO)

spacewagon1 January 5th, 2007, 02:40 AM Fewer warriors join Dinagyang '07
By Marie Katherine Villalon
LESS dancers and drummers have signed up for Dinagyang 2007.
This was revealed by Ben Jimena, executive director of the Iloilo Dinagyang Foundation, Inc.
He cited that the villages could no longer tap the youth to join them because they opted to join in their school tribes.
This information was relayed to him by the Association of Tribes of Iloilo (ATI).
Accommodations
Meanwhile, hotel rooms are already fully booked for the festival, according to a report over Aksyon Radyo Thursday.
In fact, some tourists have booked rooms in Bacolod City, just to avail of an accommodation. Iloilo City is only an hour's ferry ride from Bacolod.
Mayor Jerry P. Treñas encouraged Ilonggos that if ever they have available rooms at home, they should let their guests stay there instead of hotels.

spacewagon1 January 5th, 2007, 02:43 AM I suggest that aside from booking hotels in Bacolod, you can also book hotels in nearby city of Roxas (2 hour drive from Iloilo City) and resorts in Iloilo and Guimaras provinces. There's a lot of resort inns lining the stretch of Oton, Tigbauan, Guimbal and Miag-ao in the south, and Barotac Nuevo, Dumangas in Central towns. Also, Jordan and Buenavista in Guimaras have few more mini-hotels or inns available.

you mean longer performance time? Actually, maayo ina ang plan ni Mr Jimena to taper down the number of competing tribes. More than 20 is too much already. Makapoy man magtan-aw. I think 15 tribes during Ati Contest is ideal number na siguro.

wecky January 8th, 2007, 11:00 AM IDFI releases P2.4M to Dinagyang tribes
By Maricar M. Calubiran
The Iloilo Dinagyang Foundation Inc. (IDFI) has already released P2,490,000 as subsidy to 20 competing tribes in this year's Dinagyang Festival. The competing tribes, however, are still asking for additional subsidy from the foundation. Of the 20 tribes, 13 tribes have received P150,000 each.
Based on the records released by the IDFI the 13 tribes that received P150,000 each were Atub-Atub, Molave, Pag-asa, Parianon, Baryohanon, Kalubihan, Angola, Familia Sagrada, Panaad, Dagyaw-Ta, Himala, Hamili and Aninipay. The subsidies were released from October 2006 until December 29, 2006.
On the other hand, Tribu Bantu, Halimaw, Ilonganon, San Pedro, Ang Taga Jaro, Silak and Paghidaet have received P80,000 each. Said tribes are still waiting for additional subsidy from the IDFI. They are asking for additional financial support from the foundation since the budget is not enough to finance each tribe.
However, of the 20 tribes, five of them are in danger of losing the chance to compete in this year's ati festival. The IDFI is still pushing for its plan to eliminate five tribes which are deemed not performing well. The Dinagyang Ati competition is set on January 28, 2007.
IDFI's chair of tribes Dr. Jaime Manila said the decision to eliminate five is not yet final but IDFI chair Lee Chuan wants to implement such plan this year. There are tribes who are just repeating their performances and recycle their uniforms.
He added that the IDFI has two options in striking out the fives tribes, it could be either based on their previous performances and result of a pre-judging. There will be different sets of judges for the elimination process.
Of the two options, Manila prefers to subject the tribes into a pre-judging to see how they will perform during the contest proper. But the warriors, dancers or drummers don't have to wear their costumes during the pre-judging.
The IDFI has already identified the tribes which could probably be stricken out from the list of competing tribes. Manila, however, begged not to identify the tribes while talks on the IDFI's plan is on-going.
The foundation wants to trim down the competing tribes though it has already released some subsidy. The IDFI wants to have a better performance from them. The performances must reflect the real essence of the yearly festival.
IDFI wants to redeem religious aspect of Dinagyang
By Maricar M. Calubiran
The liturgical committee of the Iloilo Dinagyang Foundation Inc. (IDFI) wants to redeem the religious aspect of this year's Dinagyang festival by mandating the contesting tribes to attend the daily novena masses to be held in San Jose Parish Church, in honor of Señor Sto. Niño. For the past years, the festivity was turned into a commercial and business opportunity rather than a religious festival.
Liturgical committee chair June Rivera said if all the 20 tribes will be allowed to compete in this year's festival, four tribes will hear the mass everyday and perform some of their steps after the mass. The novena mass will start from January 20-25, 2007.
Rivera noted that the festival lost its religious aspect and turned into a commercial event.
"The event was purposely held in honor of Señor Sto. Niño. However, it seems the people forgot the real essence of the yearly ati festival. There are competing tribes which do not even attend the novena masses when called to hear the mass. We have to go back to the basics," Rivera said.
Rivera could not help but compare the attitudes and devotions of Cebuanos to Ilonggos towards Señor Sto. Nino. In Cebu, the Basilica de Cebu is crowded with church goers during the novena masses but not in Iloilo. Last year, the foundation tried to institute such activity by celebrating masses and yet only few people heard the masses for Señor Sto. Niño.
In previous years, most of the tribes if not all joined in the yearly festival because of their so-called "Panaad" (devotion) to Señor Sto. Nino. Before, participating tribes support their group without "demanding" any financial help from the foundation or the city. They even came up with an artistic uniform by using indigenous materials and better portrayal of the celebration.
Dinagyang festival was placed in the tourism map of the country in 1977 during the time of deposed President Ferdinand Marcos when the late president declared the year as Tourism Year. With the declaration, each local government unit was asked to present any tourism related activity.
By that time, Dinagyang, which was then called as Ati-atihan sa San Jose de Placer was already in place. The tribes used to perform only at the church vicinity though they are also having a parade in the nearby streets. As many as 32 tribes compete during the time. The performances begin at 7 a.m. and ends at 7 p.m., recalled Rivera. It was late Pacifico Sudario which coined the Dinagyang word, which means merrymaking.
The first tribe which captured the interest of the national as well as foreign dignitaries was the "Last Warriors", which was then being supported by Panaderia de Molo. They wore tin cans out of the cans used as container of their bread products. It was so beautiful and it created sounds because of the tin cans. The "Last Warriors" was even invited to perform in Manila.
Rivera lamented that with the change of time, the outlook of some tribe is not already to honor and pursue their vows on whatever graces they asked and are asking from Senor Sto. Niño. It is more of a money-making business to them. Before, with or without subsidy, they will find their ways and perform.
Last year, some tribes belonging to the Association of Tribes in Iloilo (ATI) threatened to boycott the festival after they were not given the subsidy they are asking from the foundation. The foundation stood by their decision not to release excessive amount to the tribes. Eventually, no tribe backed out during the Dinagyang 2006 competition.

spacewagon1 January 9th, 2007, 02:30 AM Foreign dignitaries to witness Dinagyang
MAYOR Jerry Treñas described Dinagyang as the best avenue to promote Iloilo City here and abroad.
“The city has been using the festival as a vehicle to promote Iloilo. We cannot quantify the return on investments but there is a lot of attention given to Iloilo (because of Dinagyang).”
The mayor credited the media for the strong publicity given to the city’s premiere celebration which has been recognized as the country’s best tourism event.
“In terms of media hype – if we are featured on television, broadsheets and radio – the exposure would be very big. Ultimately, that is what we are trying to achieve – that we continuously promote Iloilo not only for tourism but hopefully for investments (too),” Treñas said.
He added several dignitaries and their families are set to grace the Dinagyang highlights on Sunday, Jan. 28.
Initially, he counted among the foreign visitors Belgian Ambassador to the Philippines Gregoire Vardakis, US Embassy’s Vice Consul James Greene, Greg Bernstein and cultural affairs officer Bruce Armstrong.
Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Gen. Oscar Calderon, Department of Finance (DOF) Undersecretary Robert Tan and Petron’s vice-president for legal Atty. Jose Laurel also confirmed their attendance.
The United Nations (UN) might also send a delegation to witness Dinagyang.
Meanwhile, Treñas said a “Donor’s Forum” will be held during the Dinagyang to present to various funding agencies the city’s priority projects needing financial assistance.
Treñas expects representatives for some 50 funding organizations including the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Australian Agency for International Development (AUSAID), Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), German Technical Cooperation (GTZ) and United States Agency for International Development (USAID) to attend the forum.
“Dinagyang is becoming more popular and we expect more visitors to come.”

Dinagyang 2007 cost: P12M
THE budget needed to ensure the successful staging of this year’s Dinagyang Festival, Iloilo City’s grandest fiesta, is getting bigger.
Mayor Jerry Treñas yesterday said the Iloilo Dinagyang Foundation Inc. (IDFI) is trying to raise P10 to P12million for the 2007 Dinagyang which, as usual, will be highlighted by the ati-ati tribes contest Jan. 28.
Last year IFDI operated on a P10-million budget, thanks to the P8-million sponsorship of telecom giant Smart. This year, however, Smart will only give P2million. Rival Globe will also donate P2million. If plans don’t miscarry, Globe will also distribute 1 million pieces of special edition pre-paid cards embossed with Dinagyang theme to help with its promotion.
IDFI executive director Ben Jimena said they expect to receive the sponsorships of the two telecom networks this week.
Treñas is optimistic the festival will overcome the budgetary constraints as more donations are pouring in. So far, the IDFI has generated P9million in pledges.
“I think even with the reduction of support by Smart, we can cope with our financial obligations.”
City Hall, for its part, shelled out P3million for Dinagyang this year. Treñas said the city government shelled out only P1million for Dinagyang last year.
To help Dinagyang, the Department of Tourism (DOT) also pledged to extend P1million.
“I talked with Secretary Durano and he said the P1-million budget is approved (and) the papers are already in the accounting,” said Treñas.
Earlier, Treñas said the United Nations (UN) gave P520,000 for Dinagyang to promote its Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) which aims to alleviate poverty.
Iloilo City Lone District Rep. Raul Gonzalez Jr. earmarked from his pork barrel P500,000 while DOT regional director Edwin Trompeta initially committed P185,000.

For me, the most religious festival for Ilonggos IMO, so far as devotion goes is La Nuestra Señora de Candelaria (Our Lady of Candles) of Jaro. Although Santo Niño is also somewhat important in Ilonggo Catholic life pero devotion is not as intense as that of Cebuanos, IMO.
And with regards to the sponsorships, IF THEY REALLY DANCE FOR THE DEVOTION FOR SANTO NIñO, THEY SHOULDN'T COMPLAIN SINCE IN THE EYES OF GOD, EVERYONE IS EQUAL.
With regards to Dinagyang, on confused state guro na sya. There are some of my profs doubt that it presents the Ilonggo mainstream culture. Indi man ta ya Ati. spacewagon1 January 10th, 2007, 06:15 AM Hotels fully booked for Dinagyang 2007
HOTELS in the city are now fully booked for visitors who will grace the Dinagyang Festival though only 90% has so far confirmed their reservations
With some guests already arriving, Luis Leocario, head of committee on reception of the Iloilo Dinagyang Foundation Inc. (IDFI), said yesterday they have been busy welcoming and billeting the guests.
Leocario, who is also the president of Association of Iloilo Tour Operators (AITO), said they expect all reservations to be confirmed in the coming days.
As a new IDFI member, Leocario said the AITO serves as the welcome committee.
Leocario said they have 48 tour member-agencies with transport services waiting for the arrival of City Hall-invited guests at the airport and seaport and to accompany them to their respective accommodations.
However, Leocario said that the city’s existing hotel rooms cannot accommodate all the booking requests of visitors who want to witness the grand celebration.
“We have not yet offered the pension houses because tourists might not find these comfortable.”
He said he turned down the proposed hotel reservations of at least 15 foreigners because “there are no more available (hotel) rooms.” He explained their request for reservations came in late.
“We started to receive bookings in September through a Travel Mart but the responses were always inquiries and were not definite thinking that they could still get a hotel room in December. But the late requests did not make it,” Leocario said.
Leocario said they also offer standard packages to tourists which include panoramic, adventure in Guimaras Island and culinary and museum tours in the city.
The AITO, which is also a member of Iloilo Convention and Visitors Bureau (ICVB), is positioning Iloilo as convention hub.
AITO has 15 DOT-accredited tour guides. They also tap tourism students to lead visitors in going around local attractions.

good analysis, Bern. We're more into Candelaria than Sto Nino devotees in Iloilo.
Dinagyang Festival is a real festival sans religious inuendos. It incorporates different aspects of Iloilo and Ilonggos culture, beliefs and history. It revolves from Barter of Panay, The Pact of San Joaquin to a very highly-commercialised festival. Right now, you cannot equate Dinagyang as a highly religious since there are too many facets surrounding the festival itself. Moreso subong, with festival moving to support United Nation's Millenium Development Goals. It constantly revolving depending on awards and recognition gathered nationally and internationally.
wecky January 11th, 2007, 04:29 AM Malaysian firm to join Dinagyang trade fair
DINAGYANG Festival is becoming an avenue for product promotions – even the imported ones.
Engr. Ely Bagtasus, chair of kiosk committee of the Iloilo Dinagyang Foundation Inc. (IDFI) yesterday said a Malaysian firm wants to display its products during the Dinagyang highlights Jan. 26-28.
Bagtasus said the company will promote vitamins and energy drinks to the revelers during the merry-making.
The city’s grandest fiesta usually spurs businesses in the metropolis – from the small vendors to giant companies selling their merchandise to people who flock the “best tourism festival” in the country.
Bagtasus added that a Nueva Ecija-based trading company also plans to showcase 16 products.
Likewise, Bagtasus said Manila-based bread maker Gardenia committed to rent 15 kiosks.
“They will utilize two kiosks and give out the remaining 13 to vendors for free. We have encouraged the vendors and companies to sell their products for livelihood as well as establish links with local entrepreneurs,” said Bagtasus.
He said the kiosks will be positioned in strategic places in downtown area where the crowd converges to watch and join the Dinagyang revelry.
Bagtasus said bottling companies have pledged to donate several kiosks including Coca-Cola (P180,000), San Miguel (P200,000), Pepsi (P180,000) and Beer na Beer (P200,000).
These firms did the same scheme as part of their promotional project.
But the kiosks should only sell beer and softdrinks in can or plastic bottles and they are strictly prohibited from serving liquors to minors.
Bagtasus said they have been accepting vendor applicants November last who want to use the 512 kiosks, 75 percent of which were already sold out.
Some 15 percent of the kiosks made down payments but Bagtasus said the lessees should pay their rents before the Jan. 15 deadline of their reservations will be given to other interested vendors.
The 2.5m x 3m kiosk can be rented for P960 for the three-day festival highlight. Interested lessees may contact 338-0982 or visit Phi-Beta Enterprises along Ledesma Street.
Bagtasus said the vendors will be provided with free electrical lines and light bulbs while 15 electricians will maintain the lines.
If they use appliances, the lessees should pay an additional P100 per day for freezers and refrigerators and P25 daily for karaoke, television sets, water dispensers and electric fans.
Bagtasus said the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) also wants to collect P200 privilege tax from each vendor.
The staging of concerts requires the organizer to pay P3,000.
Bagtasus said they will install some 17 portable toilets costing P4,500 each for sanitation purposes.
He added they shelled out P22,000 for electric bills last year while 20 percent of the profit went to garbage collection fees.
Bagtasus said the kiosk committee remitted P370,000 net profit to the IDFI last year.

METROPOLITAN_ILOILO January 18th, 2007, 06:54 AM Another Dinagyang Update:
2 towns to join KasadyahanBy Maricar M. Calubiran
Two municipalities from the southern part of Iloilo will join the forthcoming Kasadyahan Festival. They will add to the seven other tribes which will compete on January 27, 2007.
Kasadyahan Tribes Committee Chair Eden Deriada said the Tribu Saludan of Tigbauan and Tribu Bayluhay of San Joaquin will join this year's competition. The entries of each town are those groups which will win their respective festival.
Deriada said the two participating tribes have also adjusted to the guidelines set forth by the Iloilo Dinagyang Foundation. Once a group is declared winner in their own town festival, the same group automatically represents the municipality to the Kasadyahan Festival.
Other than Tribu Saludan and Tribu Bayluhay, the Tribu Mandurriaonon, Pahinis de Lauaan of Antique, Tinuom of Cabatuan, Kahilwayan of Sta. Barbara, Saad of Leganes, Tultugan of Maasin and Pasidungog of San Miguel completes the list of the nine competing tribes of the Kasadyahan Festival. Last year's, winner was Tribu Tultugan.
Deriada added that this year, they encourage the participating tribes to use "indigenous musical instruments" such as bamboos, string, rattan, vines and dried vegetables. They have to have their own identity and they must get rid of the ati drumbeat to distinguish themselves from the ati-atihan.
There are still competing groups that will use drums and recorded musical soundtrack during their performance. Hopefully, the committee wants to slowly eliminate such practice. "It is better if the music is live and it has an impact," said Deriada.

COME and witness Dinagyang 2007 in Iloilo City and experience the spectacle of the sights and sounds of the Best Tourism Event in the Philippines.
The Dinagyang Festival is celebrated every fourth weekend of January. ON the first day is the Kasadyahan contest while the second day is the Ati-Atihan contest.
This year, the events are slated on January 27 and 28.
Dinagyang, which is an Ilonggo term for merrymaking, is the Ilonggos' expression of thanksgiving and worship to the Holy Child Jesus.
Tribes shout Viva Senor St. Nino as they dance and exalt the image.
With tribes donning colorful costumes creatively handmade, this year's Dinagyang Festival is sure to attract visitors.
LAUNCHING
Dinagyang Festival 2007 was officially launched last Dec. 10, 2006 at the SM Mall of Asia as part of its effort in introducing the festival outside Iloilo and promoting it in other parts of the country.
One of its feature is the Dinagyang Through The Years Exhibit that showcases the evolution of the festival -- from its humble roots to the its climb to become the best tourism event in the country. The exhibit of the Iloilo City Government, through the Iloilo City Tourism Office and Dinagyang Foundation Inc. will be at the 3/F Events Center of SM City Iloilo from January 15 to 28, 2007.
Attractions of the exhibit range from tribe memorabilias, tribe facts and history that trace back exciting happenings of Dinagyang through the years. The Sto. Nino de Cebu is also an attraction to the exhibit as it is placed strategically for devotees who will be visiting the area to pray and pay homage to the Child Jesus. Likewise, the Sto. The New Frontier in Power Festival
By Bombette G. Marin
http://www.theguardianiloilo.ph/tourism/photo/tourism2.jpg
Festivals bring people together and in the Philippine society, they play an important part as it celebrates something important in the life of the community. Normal life is suspended and the daily worries are forgotten for as long as the festival lasts.
The festival tradition of DINAGYANG started when the replica of the image of Sto. Nino (child Jesus) of Cebu was brought to Iloilo City in 1968. Headed by Fr. Sulpicio Ebderes, OSA, together with the delegation from the Cofradia Del Sto. Nino in Cebu , the image, up to this day, is enshrined at the San Jose Parish church.
Formerly called Iloilo Ati-atihan in 1969, the term Dinagyang was launched as the official festival name in 1977 by the late Mr. Pacifico Sudario, a writer and radio broadcaster. Dinagyang, coined from the Hiligaynon word “dagyang” or “to make merry,” is celebrated every last weekend of January. It is a grand presentation that features colorful costumes with huge props, accompanied by the pulsating rhythm of the drums where soot-painted dancers or warriors parade in a more lavish and choreographed steps that capture the spirit of the festival. It is Iloilo’s own way of thanking Sto. Niño for the many blessings He has showered to the Ilonggo populace.
Evidently, the Hala-Bira tradition in Iloilo originates from Kalibos’ Ati-atihan where the beating of the drums is tied together with the festival tradition of a group of dancers or performers parading and moving in different formations through the streets. With costumes incorporating natural objects together such as fabrics, shells, beads to create the dancers’ headdress and costume. Each object and combination of objects were to represent a certain idea or spiritual force.
http://www.theguardianiloilo.ph/tourism/photo/tourism3.jpg
The Dinagyang music is a rich network of musical tradition that has developed all through the years. It has certain distinctive traits where it uses repetition as an organizing principle. There are many different modes of expression in the Dinagyang music. Normally, drum ensembles play interlocking patterns during the duration of the dance performances. Each drummer uses a special method of striking the drumhead to produce varying pitches and timbres. Others incorporate rattles and an iron bell, which is struck with a stick to produce a repeated pattern.
The Dinagyang beat is distinctive and an infectious sound. And in the recent years, the beat is rapidly inspiring audiences with its unique mixture of Brazilian beat and funky Latin dance groves. From the blissful rhythms to hip-hop riffs, tunes are playful, vital and energetic: they make one dance. It is intimate and exuberant.
Alongside the beating of the drums is the Dinagyang dance, varied in style and function. The dancing steps play a crucial role in the competition. Common dance patterns include team dances using formalized patterns, such as straight lines or circular formations; group dances that allow individuals to emerge and display their skills; and solo dances, often performed by a powerful individual or the most professional in the group. Bodily postures vary from the upright stance; to the earth-oriented movements, performing intricate foot and hand movements. Normally, dancers hold either a spear or a shield and the image of Sr. Sto Niño. The Dinagyang dance has also been affected by social change. Nowadays, frequently relying on symbolic gestures and magnificent costumes, dances often narrate stories based on mythology, historical events, and legends, with performances lasting for not less than seven minutes and not exceeding 10 minutes.
The rich colors of their costumes complements every skin tone. The flawless moves provide a discreet sparkle in the eyes of every dancer. Yet it is in the festive spirit of every performer that Dinagyang comes alive.
Come and witness Dinagyang Festival 2007 with 20 of the best tribes the Dinagyang Festival has ever-produced in its 39 years of existence in Iloilo on January 28, quietly attracting the world’s eyes with its power performances.

By RN Joy Gaylan
ILOILO held the Dinagyang Festival's Opening Salvo Friday.
The participating tribes were Tribu Silak of Iloilo City National High School (last year's champion), Ilonganon, Tribu ni San Pedro, Parianon, Bantu, Atub-atub, Aninipay, Pag-asa, Ang Taga-Jaro, Dagyawta, Panaad, Sagrada, Paghidait, Baryohanon, Angola, Himala, Molave, Kalubihan and Hamili.
Most of the dancers were students from different schools.
The most colorful tribe was Tribu Ang Taga-Jaro with their colorful sarong and black tube top. Most of the tribes wore shirts from their sponsor. Some tribes used paint and tattoo on their body.
Aninipay's sponsor Tongniks distributed products.
There were different food stalls scattered all over the city for the food festival. Souvenirs and people who do tattoos were also present.
Main roads were closed at the time the opening salvo started and public utility jeepneys were rerouted. (RNJG)

Featuring Dagoy
Dagoy is towering six feet and nine inches tall, three-dimensional mascot that has evolved from just a mere icon. His birth is a product of imagination and desire, not just by a single person but also of people who are working diligently to make the Dinagyang festival a part of everyone's day-to-day life.
Iloilo Dinagyang Foundation Inc. (IDFI) Executive Director Ben Jimena related that the mascot now is the once caricature used by the marketing group headed by Francis de la Cruz as a promo material. This happened in 2002, the first time time the festival was handled by the foundation.
Chris Bayani, an artist from Manila, drawing inspiration from his adopted daughter, delicately prepared a sketch of the icon that was later made as the official logo of the festival. His faces then were seen on posters, T-shirts and streamers everywhere. Years later, the foundation tapped the expertise of the San Pablo Sineng Laya Corporation based in Las Piñas, Manila to prepare a life-size mascot of "Dagoy". Dagoy's first public appearance was on December 11,2004 at the The Fort in Taguig during the official launching of the festival in Manila. He made his presence felt in Iloilo City during Pamukaw on December 18,2004.
http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e248/lewdsaint/dgdagoy2.gif
He has also attended the opening of the Dinagyang exhibits at SM City Iloilo on January 10, 2005, his first public appearance for that year. Jimena stressed though that aside from the Dinagyang-related activities, he is also expected to attend various special occasions of the city to make the public more aware of the festival. "Wherever Dagoy goes, people will be reminded of the Dinagyang festival", Jimena stressed. "Once Dagoy shakes your hand, it simply means that you are welcome in Iloilo". Jimena described Dagoy as a friendly Aeta kid. He's a loveable child and very attractive to other children.
Dagoy wears a fiber glass head dress bearing the picture of Santo Niño. The
dominant colors are black and gold. He also has a camel-colored bahag, the
typical attire of Aetas. He is holding a drum made of fiber glass bearing the
logo of Iloilo City government printed at the center. His hands and feet are
adorned with multi-colored bracelets similar to the one being worn by ati-ati
warriors. He is expected to have a change in outfit every year, though Jimena said that they are going to copy the costume of the tribe that will be declared as best in costume every Dinagyang contest.
Just like any other kid Dagoy was christened on January 14, 2005, a symbol of welcoming him to the Christian world, on the day of opening salvo at the San Jose Parish church in Plaza Libertad, Iloilo City. From there he will be placed side by side with the Santo Niño de Cebu in an open van and they are going to tour the city, following the route of parade.
In the coming years, expect more innovations to come, according to Jimena. He said their group never gets tired thinking of what is best for the festival. And the birth of Dagoy after 36 long years is just but one of these innovations they have made.

lewdsaint February 9th, 2007, 12:30 AM Dinagyang as seen from a foreigner’s eyes
By JAC VIDGEN
(Editor’s note: The writer is a Buteyko breathing practitioner who has been coming to Manila at least three times a year for seminars and workshops. Witnessing his first Philippine festival was such a thrilling experience, he attests. There is nothing like being there, he adds. Here he writes about the colorful Dinagyang festival in Iloilo as seen from a foreigner’s eyes)
IN Australia, it seems our biggest comparable festival is the Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras (which is big — and hundreds of thousands of people watch the parade) — but this is obviously representing a relatively small section of the wider community.
Dinagyang was my first real Filipino festival — and what a wonderful experience it was!
I learned that there are a number of similar festivals around the country — all rooted in tribal traditions and now mixed with more recent Christian themes. I’d seen some photos over the years but nothing could create the atmosphere like being there on the street and seeing/feeling/hearing the people celebrate. And I believe that humans all need to express their desire for celebration.
This is one of those festivals which has evolved from a combination of ancient tribal and also more modern traditions. The origin of this style of festival seems to have come from an island nearby (closer to Boracay) — apparently it was initially about war, but now involves Saint Nino (pronounced ‘ninyo’ — the manifestation of the baby Jesus?) who represents peace...... go figure!
Suffice to say, lots of people have lots of fun and celebration — there’s dressingup (very ‘urban tribal’), drumming, dancing, drinking, plenty of colour and movement — and seemingly pretty good vibes all around...... oh, and of course eating! And these days, the necessary commercial element — but no-one seems to mind, and a good time was had by all.
Well, Dinagyang certainly allowed them to do that! The costumes, the drums, the dance routines, the black body paint, the painted faces — and the ubiquitous St. Nino in his many guises — all combined to create a spirit of joy.
Then there were the enthusiastic crowds — many of the kids sporting fake tattoos and masks etc. It was a real family affair too. Of course the sponsors were very present — as were the police — but it seemed like a peaceful happy event where all concerned had a great time.
At night, the streets were filled with revellers — entertained at various stages, with dancing in the street, and, in true Filipino style, with a huge food festival!
For my friend, a Filipino, it was also his first big festival, and we both had a totally enjoyable few days...... in all, a highly recommendable event!

bonixx February 13th, 2007, 12:41 PM Lucban’s Pride: Pahiyas Fesitval
by Toni de Villa
The colorful Pahiyas festival that we have known for years dated as far back in the 16th century when Catholicism is on the rise in Quezon province. As many have told, it started as a way of thanksgiving for a good harvest. And the bountiful offers were given to the Franciscan missionaries who brought Catholicism in the 1500s.
Since then, it already begun as a tradition among the Lucbanins until 1595 when the construction of the wooden church paved the way for the locals to bring their harvest to the church. It was believed that this rite must be done by the farmers in order to avoid bad luck, drought and famine. But this is actually done to celebrate the feast of San Isidro, patron saint of farmers. Through the years, they were showered with many blessings and harvest continued to be in uprising. Such time came when people have thought of displaying their harvest in front of their houses where the priest would come and bless them. Each year, the route of the priest blessing the harvest, vary for everyone to get a chance to participate.
http://img213.imageshack.us/img213/7970/lucban2ee4.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
So, get ready with your sneakers and rubber shoes as you trek the old streets of Lucban during this season. First thing one would notice is the “kiping.” This is a wafer made of rice and shaped into a tree leaf. It comes in colors of pink, green and yellow matched with richness of their harvested fruits that are then lined-up as decoration in front of a participating house. Another thing that can be made out of “kiping” is a chandelier that is also placed in each house. But what keeps you looking back at these creations is not just the color but the ingenuity and creativity of the people who keep reinventing concepts year after year.
http://img20.imageshack.us/img20/9610/lucban4bs1.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
Next best thing are the floats that are also seen in other towns of Quezon in celebration of San Isidro Festival. Fresh fruits and vegetables are everywhere and it has been a tradition that people pick them once they pass along your area.
Presently, the Pahiyas Festival has become the pride not only of Lucbanins but all Quezonians for consistently keeping the culture and religion alive. The bright colors of “kiping” transcend the beauty if this town, not to mention the friendly smiles and greetings you get to receive from one street to another.
http://img213.imageshack.us/img213/599/lucban3um4.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
Lucban is one of the most-visited places in Quezon Province especially during summer. It has continued to be the undeniable Summer Capital in Southen Tagalog for its inviting and cold weather. It was told in the myth that five men found Lucban Quezon during the 16th century in the persons of Marcos Tigla, Lucas Guimba, Lucas Galandang, Lucas Nanawa and Antonio Manduman. And it was in fact, Marcos Tigla who became the first “kapitan.” A year later, people flocked in this town not only because of its weather but also its places. One particular site is its church. It was built in 1630 by the order of Kapitan Lucas Martin. But in 1732, a huge fire hit this Roman Catholic church and none was left except for the convent. But years later, it was rebuilt and has remained to be sure spot for tourist until now for its nostalgic façade.

Mayohan sa Tayabas Festival
Mayohan sa Tayabas is the yearly program of the municipal government to foster solidarity and community. Through a nine-day celebration, which takes place on May 11-18, the Tayabasin honors the glory as well as blesses the wounds and sacrifices of the past. Mayohan is a season to converge in Tayabas as the mother navel of the province of Quezon. From the linang, or countryside, the rural folk gather at the town proper. Those who study and work in Manila and other places return home.
Mayohan opened May 11 with the Parada ng Baliskog, the Tayabas arch of welcome. Thirty-three barangays and various organizations of government and civil society exhibit their baliskog, all brightly decorated with Tayabas indigenous materials such as buli, rattan, dried flowers, kiping and tistis.
On May 15, Mayohan gives tribute to San Isidro with a procession reminiscent of the yearly Quiapo devotion to Jesus Nazareno. From many towns of Quezon, multitudes of peasants and workers—predominantly male—flock to Tayabas. They clamor for suman and other pabitin as their sweat, strength, and rivalry pervade in the air. Impelled by their yearly panata or sacrificial devotion to San Isidro, they participate in Hagisan ng Suman, believing that the bounty gathered in their sacks heralds economic upliftment. It portends the amount of their next harvest or income for the year.
Suman is the ritual gift of Hagisan. It is cooked with great enthusiasm by Tayabenses because Hagisan is an opportunity to share their prosperity. Bundles of suman are gaily tied in the pabitin, which is made out of a special kind of bamboo called bagakay. Pabitin is actually an installation art that is not simply exhibited. As soon as the image of San Isidro passes by, pabitin must be emptied of its colorful array of abundance, which aside from suman, includes banana, mango, buko, pineapple, and other summer fruits
Agawan Festival
The Agawan Festival is an annual agricultural festival held in Sariaya, Quezon, Philippines every 15th May.
The festival name, Agawan, is of recent development. It was the idea of Rev. Fr. Raul Enriquez, now the town's parish priest, president of its tourism council and the proponent of the town's quadricentennial celebration in 1999.
http://img369.imageshack.us/img369/972/normalagawan4ki2.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
The name describes the main feature of the fiesta procession. As the parade winds its way through the streets, people snatch the goodies and other produce hanging on the houses they pass by or on a pabitin, specially made for the parade. At the same time, people in the houses throw food, fruits and money into the parade.
http://img329.imageshack.us/img329/2723/normalagawan7dc0.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
Before the parade, nearby residents decorate the outside of their homes. Colorful buntal hats are festooned all over the façade of houses. String beans are draped on windows to make curtains and banana trees are used to adorn fences. The primary, and most traditional, element in the decoration was the bagakay, or young bamboo branches from which junk food, fruits, candies and money were hung for people to snatch as they pass by.
http://img369.imageshack.us/img369/4757/normalagawan6sj2.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
People say no matter how high the bagakays are, they would bow when the image of San Isidro Labrador passes by, allowing people to grab the goodies.
The Feast of San Isidro Labrador (May 15)
It is the feast day celebration of the farmer's patron saint, a thanksgiving for a year-long bountiful harvest. The celebration involves hanging all sorts of fruits, candies, food crops and multi-colored kiping on bamboo poles.

Pasayahan sa Lucena (May 27-29)
Pasayahan sa Lucena was conceptualized to showcase the natural and ecological interrelationship and independence between nature and man. It also promotes the ways of life inherent among the people of Lucena. All these find exquisites and appreciative expressions through a mammoth gathering of colors, outlandish costumes and symbolic floats reminiscent of Mardi Gras in Rio de Janeiro and New Orleans.

The first Pasayahan in 1987 was a big triumph that it has become an annual affair. Year after year the Pasayan draws a sea of frolicking humanity. Pasayahan sa Lucena 2006 features Chami Festival to promote Lucena’s very own native delicacy, the chami. Other features such as the Midnight Madness Sale and street concerts take stage in the Pasayahan.

wecky February 15th, 2007, 01:19 AM Here's an article about Dinagyang's worldwide fete:
Dinagyang in spotlight at UN forum in Nepal
Jeehan V. Fernandez
2007-02-15
ILOILO City’s globally-acclaimed Dinagyang Festival will take the spotlight at the United Nations forum in Katmandu, Nepal on March 22, said Ben Jimena, executive director of Iloilo Dinagyang Foundation Inc. (IDFI).
Jimena announced the recent recognition garnered by Dinagyang during a dinner hosted by IDFI Monday to thank the sponsors that helped stage the festival’s 39th edition this year.
He said this year’s Dinagyang is the “best ever” in its history.
IDFI president Lee Chuan said they started running the festivity with a small amount of P700,000 in 2002. The 2007 edition’s budget amounted to P12million.
“The Dinagyang experience will be presented before a UN conference,” Mayor Jerry Treñas said, adding Jimena will make the presentation of the city’s premiere celebration.
The UN has supported Dinagyang with P520,000 in financial assistance as a vehicle to promote the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) which seek to alleviate poverty around the world.
Cited for its “social artistry,” Dinagyang is the first festival worldwide to be endorsed by the UN to highlight its poverty alleviation programs.
Treñas said Jimena will present Dinagyang’s best practices and how these will promote the localization of MDGs.
The mayor was elated of the global recognition that Iloilo City has been reaping primarily through Dinagyang.
“We are now starting to be a model with our gains. We see that the practices we have been doing have been acknowledged not only by the national but the international community as well,” Treñas stressed.
Dinagyang was declared as the “best tourism event” in the country by the Association of Tourism Officers of the Philippines (ATOP).
Jimena added that Dinagyang is given privilege by the Aliwan Fiesta, the festival of all festivals in the country, as the only festival that will showcase two winning tribes – Tribu Ilonganon and Tribu Kahilwayan – in Manila on April 26-28.

spacewagon1 February 15th, 2007, 05:18 PM Iloilo City to ‘sell’ Dinagyang to Nepal
ILOILO City – After the recent successful staging of Dinagyang Festival, Iloilo City will showcase it in Kathmandu, Nepal during a conference organized by the United Nations sometime in April.
According to Iloilo City Tourism Officer Benito Jimena, who is at the same time executive director of the Iloilo Dinagyang Foundation, Inc., Dinagyang was cited by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) as a “best practice” in terms of private-public partnership in promoting the success of a tourism event in Asia.
The festival also showcases the efforts of the foundation and the Iloilo City government in promoting the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) as depicted in the choreography of the performing tribes.
Dinagyang Festival has been endorsed by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) as the only festival in the world to be used in the promotion of the MDG.
It complements the attempt of the city to champion its localization of the MDGs after it was chosen as one of the pilot cities in the country for the MDG Localization.
Jimena said he will not be bringing the Dinagyang tribes to Nepal but he will be sharing with them Iloilo City's experience.
Meanwhile, Iloilo City Mayor Jerry P. Treñas said this city is now starting to become a model for other local government units.
"Our gain is that we see that the practices we have been doing are acknowledged not only by the national but the international community as well," he said.

Lili February 15th, 2007, 06:16 PM I love the Pahiyas Festival of Quezon where they design the houses with colorful rice kipings. I have some pictures from before but I have to scan them.
kirby21 February 15th, 2007, 11:17 PM Will he brings slides and powerpoint for presentation? Puwede man siya kahatag 5-6 minutes video sang Dinagyang. Suggestion man lang ina sa akon.
Btw, Ben Jimena is a Centralian, for all I know. Ara da siya pirmi sa CPU.
Sa Dinagyang promotion naman, I'm bit happy nga medyo agresibo na sila subong when it comes sa promotion sang Dinagyang. We simply need to use all our means and resources. Yearly, Dinagyang is getting bigger and bigger when it comes to budget. Who knows by next year, it'll peg at 12million up to 15 million depende sa sponsors. Now, the sponsors are getting satisfied sa festival, they'll surely make it better next time. If city government can give 5 million next year, it will be great indeed considering the investments Dinagyang is bringing to the city and province of Iloilo. The whole of MIGEDC should support as well. And they'll start promoting the council during Dinagyang Festival.
kirby21 February 15th, 2007, 11:22 PM After UN Forum in Nepal, what's next?
In a such a short period of time, no other festivals can equal Dinagyang's prowess, not only world-famous BUT world-acclaimed and internationally-recognised multi-awarded festival. To top it al, the United Nations is behind Dinagyang. It's more than any other award. Isn't it that before the few months ago, Dinagyang is the only festival in the country featured and awarded by the Asian Development Bank. It was featured in their recently-released book for Asia. It's definitely, a JOB WELL DONE !

http://img213.imageshack.us/img213/4239/chami1ff4.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
Chami is a tasty and popular food made of locally manufactured noodles and cooked in pancit like manner with pork, vegetables and the usual condiments. Its locally manufactured noodles make the recipe distinctly delicious.
Chami is affordable and is served in numerous restaurants in Lucena City and small snack bars and canteens. In support of the Chami industry, the City Government has made it an activity to conduct the chami festival during Pasayahan sa Lucena festivities.
The long strip of Quezon Avenue, major street in the city proper is
filled with participants who are part of the “Chami Festival”. Participants are provided with free ingredients and their own original recipe of chami. The winner gets a prize from the sponsors and from the City Government. This is done annually during the town fiesta.

lewdsaint February 28th, 2007, 09:10 AM Two winning Tribes of Dinagyang 2007 were invited to join the 2007 Aliwan Fiesta. They are the Tribu Ilonganon and Tribu Kahilwayang (of Sta. Barbara, Iloilo) winners of ATI contest and Kasadyahan contest respectively.
Dinagyang is given privilege by the Aliwan Fiesta, as the only festival that will showcase two winning tribes.
This is a very great promotion venue of all festivals around the Philippines.
See you sa Aliwan Fiesta, Eric.:)

The MassKara Festival has been officially invited by the Manila Broadcasting Company to join the Aliwan competition of Philippine festivals, which has a P1 million prize for the champion, next year.
They have accepted the challenge and like the festivals they have organized, Bacolod's Aliwan entry this year will be a collaboration and showcase of the best artistic and creative minds of the city.
BYAHILO February 28th, 2007, 01:46 PM Manila Broadcasting will be releasing the Official schedule of activities on March 2.
Some insiders have already confirmed that for the first time, Masskara Festival will join Aliwan, half of the dancers will wear the 2005 costume while the other half will wear the 2006.
