It's a sign of maturity when a city starts spending money on real beautification projects. Especially when it is intended to help highlight a cultural asset.

I like Seungraemun (Namdaemun), if for no other reason than the fact that my ancestor was Seoul mayor during its construction, and that his name still graces the gate's cornerstone :) Besides, it is the grandest gate in Seoul (although Hwaseong in Suwon is built at a grander scale).

I also love the mayor. he has done so much for the beautification of the city and making the city much better than ever before. He also did a huge good deed stopping the relocation of the capital

I read this on the Seoul website. Pretty cool project. Is the mayor also responsible for the new river development in Namdaemun ( I think thats where it is)

Oh yea and didn't the mayor have a really high ranking spot for Hyundai industries?

The current mayor was once Jung Ju Yong's right hand man. He would get tasked to solve the hard/important problems. If Hyundai were Pulp Fiction, this guy would be The Wolf.

Ultracompetent, intellegent and decisive. If he were Korean president now, Korea wouldn't be worrying about brain drain/economic slump today.

Awesome. Looks so much prettier. I hope to see better lighting on the structure during nights because when I was in Korea last year, it wasn't lit very well.

Oh and LOL at the Pulp Fiction and "The Wolf" reference. ^,^;;

There's still Guanghwa Gate :)

Anyways, I'm glad that we'll soon be able to actually take pictures at the gate.

I liked the name Namdaemun more than the "new" name. I know Sungryemun was the real name of the gate beore the japanese renamed it, but it's so hard for me as a foreigner to write it and pronounce it.

I might sound stupid, but some korean names are not very nice but Koreans can't notice. I once had a discussion because I said Pyeongchang was a horrible name for an Olympic city and that I would prefer Muju as a candidate for the winter olympics. Boy, they all got mad and told me that Pyeongchang is a beautiful name... Maybe you have to be Korean to find the beauty in Pyeongchang.... Go Muju!!!(although the decission for 2014 candidate has favored PC already)

Besides, I can never support a bad loser...

The Real Deal was that if Pyeongchang lost at the 2010 bid, then Muju would be the Korean candidate city for 2014. But once they lost, Pyeongchang appealed and wouldn't accept the deal they agreed before. I know they were really close to win the bid, but they had a deal and they should respect that. I guess some bribing (some might call it Lobbying) went on to let PC go again, it's not fair and I hope they lose.

I totally agree with you!! Lee Myoung Bak gets the job done. He would make absolutely perfect candidate for Hanara party. He sould be the next president not Park Kun Hae and especially not Ko Gun, this guy is a complete moron i would prefer Chung Dong Young of Uri party than this old guy.

When Ko Gun was Seoul's mayor he did nothing!!!! absolutely nothing!!! he is just an old man who should stay at home watch his grand kids play. I don't understand why Ko Gun is the most popular candidate for president of Korea right now.
