jayadevan_c November 17th, 2011, 04:49 PM The 14 th A.K. Nair Memorial Award was bestowed on Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. Managing Director E. Sreedharan at a function here on Thursday in recognition of the services he rendered to the nation.
The award instituted by the North Malabar Chamber of Commerce (NMCC) and the A.K. Nair Memorial Endowment Committee (AKNMEC) was presented by Leela Group of Hotels chairman and AKNMEC chief patron Capt. C.P. Krishnan Nair. The award was originally scheduled to be presented by Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit. The organisers of the function said that she cancelled the trip due to some pressing official business in the Capital. Her message was read out at the function.
In his acceptance speech, Mr. Sreedharan said that he was accepting the award on behalf of the team of competent technical personnel who made the Konkan Railway and the Delhi Metro a reality. Referring to P.V. Manesh, National Security Guard commando, who had been injured in the operation against terrorists during the 26/11 Mumbai attacks and who was present at the award presentation ceremony, Mr. Sreedharan said that the services he had rendered to the nation was insignificant compared to the services rendered by Mr. Manesh who had made personal sacrifices while serving the nation.
Mr. Sreedharan said that entrepreneurs should involve themselves for the betterment of the society. Organisations such as the NMCC should come forward as it was not practical for the government and civic bodies to do everything. The public had to move in to improve quality of life as the local administrations were not very effective.
Stressing the importance of a good public transport system, he said that such a system would help reduce the number of vehicles on the roads.
The function was presided over by the NMCC president B. Maheshcandra Baliga. District Collector Anand Singh was the chief guest. He said that the Kannur being a highly urbanised district and facing all necessary evils of urbanisation including traffic logjam, the Mass Rapid Transit System type of transport was the answer to the problems.
In his keynote address, Kannur University Vice-Chancellor P.K. Michael Tharakan said that the contributions of Mr. Sreedharan for the development of the Konkan Railway and Delhi Metro were inevitable for the development of entrepreneurs. The Konkan Railway had also played a historical role as it linked the Konkan and Malabar areas which in the past had been treated as a single coastal region. Capt. Nair in his address said that Kerala was still struggling to become a modern State because of the absence of transformational infrastructure.
AKNMEC chairman Vivek Nair, NMCC vice-president C. Jayachandran and secretary Vinod Narayanan were among those present at the function.

Aslesh November 20th, 2011, 05:44 AM A tribute to Bappu, his comet, astrophysics
http://img687.imageshack.us/img687/3993/19krshb02vainuga5841537.jpg
KANNUR: The Vainu Bappu gallery, set up in the Science Park here, was inaugurated by Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, former Home Minister and the Deputy leader of the Opposition in the Kerala Assembly on Saturday. The new gallery in the park is set up as part of the efforts to give a facelift to the institution, which is supported by the district panchayath.
While inaugurating the gallery, where various items related to India's space technology, including posters, charts and videos are on display, Kodiyeri said, such efforts would inspire the young generation students to pursue their future career in science and technology-related researches.
He also observed that though the universities are expected to be hubs of research programmes, sadly enough, many universities in Kerala lack the facilities, including proper libraries. He said even the condition of the Kannur University is no exception.
"Though Vainu Bappu has his roots in Thalassery, many of us here are not aware of this and this is a recognition to him. Hope this gallery will stand as a monument of honour for the legendary astronomer, and also inspire many young people here to enter the field of scientific and technological research," he added.
Born in 1927 in Andhra Pradesh, as the son of Manali Kukuzhi Bappu, a native of Thalassery who worked as a senior astronomer in the Nizamiah Observatory, Hyderabad, Vainu was passionate about astronomy since childhood.
So, after obtaining his Masters in physics from Madras University, Vainu joined the Harvard Universit.
Later he went on to become the president of the International Astronomical Union, and also played major role in establishing several astronomical institutions in India, including the Vainu Bappu Observatory named after him, at Kavalur in Tamil Nadu. A world-renowned astronomer, he was instrumental in discovering 'Bappu-Bok-Newkirk' comet along with his professor Bart Bok and colleague Gordon Newkirk at Harvard University. While doing his PhD in Harvard, he conducted a study in 1957, on the emission line and the absolute visual magnitude of the star, along with his colleague Olin C Wilson, which is considered a landmark in astrophysics and the observations of the study later came to be known as Wilson-Bappu effect. August 19, 1982.
Though the Science Park has many projects in the pipeline, lack of sufficient fund is the dampener, said Palliyara Sreedharan, the director of the park.
The family members of the wife of Veinu Bappu also attended the inaugural ceremony

Aslesh December 5th, 2011, 05:33 AM INA to host sailing regatta and Navy Queen contest
The Indian Naval Academy (INA) will host the second edition of its International Sailing Regatta for trainees of naval academies of friendly nations and Navy Queen's contest this month.
The second edition of the Admiral's Cup Sailing Regatta will be held at the INA from December 9 to 12. The Indian Navy instituted the Admiral's Cup as a 'fleet race' in laser class of sail boats which are single crew Olympic class boats. Naval academies of friendly countries had been invited to participate in the event, a press release issued by the INA here on Sunday said. Twelve countries had already confirmed their participation. They included Brazil, Italy, Mauritius, and Sri Lanka, the release said.
The number of participating countries was expected to go up to 15 by the time of commencement of the event, it said.
The inaugural sailing regatta held in December last year was a big success with a total of 12 teams participating, which included teams from nine foreign countries.
Races at Ettikulam Bay
The races would be conducted at the Ettikulam Bay at the INA. A total of eight races were scheduled in the men and women categories to be run over three days. Two boats a country would comprise the team and they would compete for the prestigious Admiral's Cup trophy, which would be awarded to the best team based on their combined performance. In addition, individual medals would be awarded in the men and women categories.
The INA would host the Navy Queen contest in connection with Navy Week celebrations on December 10. The Navy Ball and Navy Queen contest had traditionally been the signature events of the Navy Week celebrations, the release said. Such events showcasing naval customs and traditions helped to attract talented young men and women to choose Navy as a career.
The Navy Queen Pageant is a national-level beauty pageant, which has been a launch pad for prospective contestants. Participants will be put through two rounds of screening and the grooming sessions will provide them an exposure on the Indian Navy as well as the role of the INA in the training of Naval and Coast Guard officers.
Preliminary screening
Preliminary screening will be held at the INA on December 7 and the final will be held during the Navy Ball on December 10. Interested participants can contact the INA by e-mail on navyqueen.ina@gmail.com and more details can be obtained on dialing Ph: 9447788448, 9387066099, 04985 224144.

Aslesh December 8th, 2011, 05:31 AM Kannur to witness daredevil display by Army's riders
Show to be held at Jawahar Stadium on Saturday
http://www.thehindu.com/multimedia/dynamic/00858/07tvkr_daredevil_GP_858648e.jpg
It was a sample display of breathtaking acrobatics that involved high degree of risks and perfect man-machine co-ordination as men made a spectacular performance of scintillating human formations on bikes.
The 37-member Motorcycle Rider Display Team of the Signals Corps, popularly known as the Daredevils, is here as part of the ‘Army Mela' scheduled here on December 10.
The stunning display of the feats of the team is one of the various events scheduled to be held at the Jawahar Stadium here on Saturday. Defence Minister A.K. Antony will be the chief guest at the function.
The team which is based in Jabalpur demonstrated its awesome acts on the machines at a rehearsal staged in the stadium on Wednesday in the presence of a select audience comprising Army personnel and media persons.
The team led by Captain Abhayjit Mehlawat began the performance with a show of motorcycles crisscrossing in high-speed formations that required precision to the split of a second. The show, named ‘Chain and Scissors Crossing' left the spectators stunned. It was followed by various individual and group stunts on the bikes such as handle bar ride, reverse salute, side balance, back vaulting, wheel barrow, solo ladder and the pyramid formation of the riders, among others.
After the show, Capt. Mehlawat told The Hindu that co-ordination, accuracy, physical fitness, concentration and high morale were the important factors required for the team members.
“The team practises three to four hours every day even when they move from one place to another for shows,” he said.
The team consists of volunteer dispatch riders who are not only proficient in their trade, namely dispatching messages, but are also trained to possess self-determination, mental alertness, courage, stamina and skills to ride motorcycles in tandem.
Ambujam C.P. Nambiar, who was a former member of the team and a native of the district, said he still kept in touch with the team members.
“The team of Daredevils is different from any other Army unit as each of its members maintains a strong affinity with the team even after retirement,” said Mr. Nambiar, who lost his big toe and second toe of one of his legs in an accident during a Chain Scissors Crossing show in Kolkata on December 13, 1986.
He is still remembered with affection Naib Subedar Hanuman Singh Arya, who was riding behind him in the formation before the accident occurred and who died instantly.
A key member of the team is Subedar Chaudhary, who is in charge of the upkeep of the machines.
He said his duty was to take care of the bikes.
Capt. Mehlawat said that a large number of youngsters wanted to join this elite team. They had to undergo probation for three months successfully before they could be inducted into the squad.
The team has a history of creating world records. On June 11, 2008, it created a world record by making the largest human pyramid of 251 men on 11 motorcycles and moving a distance of 200 metres.

An array of war machines from the weaponry of the Indian Army, including armoured tanks, artilleries, and individual protection suites on display drew a large number of people, including students, to Police Parade Ground here where an exhibition of modern military weapons and accessories began on Thursday as part of an Army ‘Mela' scheduled to be held here on December 10 which will be inaugurated by Defence Minister A.K. Antony at 2.30 p.m.
The exhibition was opened for the public on Thursday in connection with the dress rehearsal for the military pageantry planned on December 10. A few armoured tanks and personnel carriers showcased at the Police Parade Ground were the central attraction at the exhibition as officers explained to visitors major features of these weapons. Light field guns, automatic grenade launchers, medium machine guns, rocket launchers, AK 47 guns, INSAS rifles, carbine machine guns, and assault rifles were the other weapons displayed. Major General A.K. Pradhan, General-Officer Commanding Karnataka and Kerala Sub Area, will inaugurate the exhibition at 8.30 a.m. on December 10.
Curiosity was writ large on the faces of visitors, mainly students from different parts of the district and neighbouring areas as they moved from one slot to another at the venue showcasing various weapons and equipment. They listened to explanations from Army personnel on each of the items on display.
There was also a display of multi-span mobile bridge and Baily bridge. The equipment exhibited included laser range finder, individual protection equipment against nuclear and chemical attacks, various improvised explosive device models such as toy bombs and time bombs, and bomb disposal suits. It was in the recent past that the game of cricket came to be a rage for the average Malayali.
Football lovers were here aplenty and every corner of Malabar used to wake up to the sounds and sight of football.
But the town of Thalassery was different. This little piece of land took the lead in ushering in another game into its culture. The initial dose of cricket was administered by Lord Arthur Wellesley, probably in the 1800s, for the British soldiers. The rich man's game turned out to be the layman's passion here. The first cricket club in the town was believed to be formed in 1860 under the name Tellicherry Town Cricket. The club played host to the famous English cricketer Colin Cowdrey whose father was a tea planter in Thalassery.
40 cricket clubs
More clubs followed and the town now has 40 cricket clubs. The town and its ground hosted a match between the former cricketers of India and Sri Lanka in 2002. Cricket is a game of all seasons here. Natives of the town have an extraordinary relation with the game, says M. Dhananjayan, vice-president, Cannanore District Cricket Association (CDCA). The town has hosted 23 Ranji trophy matches here. The ongoing Ranji tournament is the second to be played in the new cricket stadium of the Kerala Cricket Association (KCA) at Conorvayal since its inception in 2008.
The Thalassery Cricket Academy, formed by the KCA in 2009, has provided coaching to as many as 18 cricketers, and many of them have already appeared in major matches.
A new batch is set to start next year, Mr. Dhananjayan says. Gone are the days when seven out of the eleven players in the State team used to be from Kannur district, he says.

The Jawahar Municipal Stadium here was packed on Saturday as thousands of people braved the heat and the sweat to watch stunts by a motorcycle display team, flypast by defence aircraft, skydiving, and performances by Army dogs and horses in connection with an Army Mela held under the aegis of the Army Southern Command.
The police and army personnel deployed at the venue and outside found it difficult to control the crowds. The turnout was well beyond the expectations of the army and the civil authorities.
The mela was inaugurated by Defence Minister A.K. Antony. In his address, he said the Defence Ministry owed a special gratitude to Kerala that accounted for over one lakh soldiers in the defence forces of the country that had 13 lakh personnel.
Promising the people that the services of the defence personnel would be available to them in times of crisis, Mr. Antony said the government was committed to the welfare of ex-servicemen. The welfare activities would be extended to areas such as rehabilitation of retired jawans. He said the government would modernise the armed forces, not to attack anyone, but to defend every inch of the country.
The inaugural function was preceded by a flypast in which three Dornier aircraft of the Indian Coast Guard, three Chetak helicopters, three advanced light helicopters, and one ME-8 of the Indian Air Force took part.
The Meghdoot skydiving team of the elite 50 Independent Para Brigade gave a demonstration of their skills.
It was followed by acrobatics by the Daredevil motorcycle display team from the Signal Centre Corps, Jabalpur, and a demonstration by horse riders from the Army Service Core Centre and College, Bangalore. A band display and cultural programmes were also held. Mr. Antony honoured World War II veterans and war widows, and presented mobility scooters to 17 defence personnel injured during operations.
Exhibition
Major General A.K. Pradhan, General Officer Commanding, Karnataka and Kerala Sub Area, inaugurated an Army exhibition at the Police Parade Grounds here on Saturday as part of the mela.
The expo showcasing modern military weapons and equipment has stalls of 40 regiments and corps from the Southern Army Command, the Indian Navy, Air Force, and the Coast Guard. The exhibits include T-72 and T-90 tanks, armoured personnel carriers, BrahMos missile, Anti-Tank Guided Missile, rocket launchers, various Improvised Explosive Devices, nuclear, biological and chemical warfare suit, artillery guns, and bridging equipment. Grievances relating to Army Group Insurance Scheme, financial assistance admissible to personnel, family and service pensions, and ex-servicemen contributory health scheme are being addressed at the cells set up by the regiments and corps.
“Grievances regarding pensioners' benefits are being addressed at the mela. Nearly 2,000 applications were received by noon and the number is expected to soar up to 10,000 by the end of the mela. Eighty per cent of the issues are provided on the spot settlement while those requiring further references are put on hold,” said Lieutenant Colonel P.B. Aiyappa, Officer-in-Charge, Ex-servicemen.
Major hospitals, including the Pariyaram Medical College, have set up free eye care and medical check-up camps at the venue. There are also stalls of private and public sector banks.

Announcing this at a press conference here on Tuesday, district panchayat president K.A. Sarala said that Rural Development Minister K.C. Joseph would inaugurate the fair at the Police Maidan at 2 p.m. on Thursday. She said that such fairs organised during festival seasons were among the major welfare schemes being implemented by the panchayats to help small entrepreneurs who were not equipped to compete with big manufacturing companies.

As many as 96 stalls would be arranged at the fair. The anticipated sales turnover from the fair is Rs.1 crore.
The products of Kudumbasree units, women's industrial units, industrial cooperative societies, Regional Agro-Industrial Development Co-operative of Kerala Ltd., Kerala State Rubber Co-operative Ltd., Kerala Soaps and units under the Fisheries Department and Agricultural Department as well other small entrepreneurs would be on sale at the stalls.
The items to be marketed in the fair would include dress materials, curry powder, pickles, soaps, seeds, planting materials, earthenware, and Ayurveda products.
She said the district panchayat had allocated Rs.21 lakh in the district panchayat's annual plan for 2011-12 for holding the fairs during Onam, Ramzan, Christmas, New Year, and Vishu seasons. The District Industries Centre was in charge of holding the fair, she added.

Aslesh December 31st, 2011, 09:24 AM Kannur band rocks with Sanskrit
http://www.deccanchronicle.com/sites/default/files/imagecache/article_horizontal/article-images/LEAD-1_0.jpg.crop_display.jpg
Can you imagine an ancient Sanskrit scripture presented as a heavy metal rock song? This is exactly what Kannur-based band, The Down Troddence, popularly known as TDT has done with their latest single, Shiva.
It features Sanskrit lyrics taken from the traditional Theyyam Thottam Paattu, which marks the beginning of a Theyyam performance and it is believed that the performer of the ritual will be possessed by divine spirits.
“Kannur is known for this art form. We have been listening to these myths from our childhood. We wanted to incorporate our culture into our music,” says Munz, vocalist of the band. The song retells the mesmerising story of Ravana’s penance for Lord Shiva’s blessings. Angered by Shiva’s refusal to respond to his devotion, Ravana plays the shloka featured in the band’s song using a veena made of his intestines.
TDT owes its name to the roots that bind them to Kerala. They were inspired by the incarnation of Shiva as Pulayan, or the downtrodden one, who appeared to test Sree Shankaracharya’s knowledge while he was going to ascend the Sarwanjha Peedham or throne of knowledge.
This is the story that is behind , a tradition that flows through the veins of each of the band members, Rinoy Balan, Varun Raj, Nezer Ahmed, Munz, Ganesh Radhakrishnan and Sushin Shyam.
As a prelude to the song Shiva, the band also released an instrumental track Ortniavis (read backwards!) which sends out a simple, yet thought provoking message: “Naangale kotthiyaalum onnalle chora, neengale kotthyalum onnalle chora?” which translates to, “irrespective of who is cut, you or me, the colour of our blood will be the same.”
The video for Shiva has had more than 38,000 views on YouTube and is testament to the fact that The Down Troddence is a force to be reckoned with. Malayalis can get a taste of their music on New Year’s Eve when the band that holds Kannur so dear to their heart performs in their hometown for the first time since the band’s formation in 2007.
The band is excited about playing at home and is overwhelmed by the positive response it received for Beach Blackout, the upcoming show.

jayadevan_c January 7th, 2012, 11:30 AM An entrance aesthetically designed with bamboo and palm leaves is the first draw. A bigger surprise is the agricultural produce, larger than normal, neatly stacked inside the hall at Polika, the food and agriculture expo.
Agro products from all over Kannur and Kasaragod districts are displayed in around 250 stalls at the expo which is on at Town Square here. The event is being organised by the Thalassery Social Service Society (TSSS), the Agricultural Department and Jeevass, Kasaragod.
A 78-kg tapioca stands out among areca nuts, ginger, and yams of different sizes. Varieties of fruits and allied products such as pickles, jams, squash, syrups and ready-to-cook food products are on sale. Forty items have been made of jackfruit alone.
There are separate stalls for milk and milk products, fisheries, and animal husbandry. Machines used for ploughing, tilling, and harvesting provide the interested visitor with a comprehensive knowledge about farming.
“Polika, which is being conducted for the third consecutive year, aims at providing a platform for farmers to sell their produce. The public too is encouraged to return to the nature for a balanced life,” said Fr. Mani Melvattom, director, TSSS. It also conveyed the necessity of employing bio-fertilizers for reaping healthy harvests, he added.
A national seminar organised in connection with the expo on ‘food sovereignty and processing of food and natural products' was inaugurated by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy here on Thursday. The fair will be on till January 8.

Aslesh February 12th, 2012, 08:43 AM Caught in a spell cast by ghazals
Ghazal-lovers in the town spent a tranquil evening in an unnoticed corner of a large hall listening to a live music concert on Friday.
The ghazal night by Jithesh Sundaram in glowing memory of the late Jagjit Singh was organised by the Lions Club of Kannur.
Ably supported by Iqbal Warsi on violin, Nikhil Ram on flute, Rajesh Bhagwat on tabla, and Raghavendra on rhythm pad, the evening rendered a mood of elation.
Drifting to Jugalbandi at various occasions, the soul-stirring numbers such as ‘Chupke chupke raat din,' ‘Hoton se,' ‘Lazzat-e-gham bada dijiye,' and ‘Rangat teri zulfen' were sung with élan. The two-hours-and-a-half musical extravaganza uplifted the mood of the audience from one of impassiveness to exultation.
Taking the listener into a trance were the smooth shift in numbers, from ‘Hoton se choolon tum,' ‘Tum itna jo muskura rahe ho,' and to ‘Tum ko dekha to yeh khayal aaya,' all immortalised by Jagjit Singh.
Blending the flow meticulously with ‘Suhaag raat hein,' the ‘antara' (Anupallavi) of ‘Kabhi kabhi mere dil mein' from the movie Silsila the singer crafted a musical transition.
Experiments galore
More such experiments followed with the slow shift from ‘Socha nahin acha bura' by Jagjit singh to film numbers like ‘Jo waada kiya woh' and ‘Sau saal pehle'. A medley was also presented with ‘Lazzat -e-gham bada dijiye' and the popular qawwali ‘Jhoom barabar jhoom sharabi' with equal flair. The fine nuances of violin could not be any better when supplemented with the lines ‘Paimane ka dil toot jaye' from ‘Rangat teri zulfen' penned by Naseem Akhtar, as ‘Sone jaise roop hain tera' brought out the best in tabla.
Evoking melancholy, love, and longing, the ghazal night turned out to be a soothing and captivating experience all at the same time.

Aslesh February 17th, 2012, 10:13 AM Pazhassi memorial to come up in Mattannur
KANNUR: If everything goes well, the district will soon have a museum along with a memorial for Kerala Varma Pazhassi Raja, the legendary ruler of Malabar. The family members of the Pazhassi royal family have agreed to handover the ancestral home, Pazhassi Padinjare Kovilakam, in Mattannur to the state government.
A ministerial level meeting to be held on February 18 will explore the possibility of developing the house as a memorial and museum.
Minister of state for home affairs Mullappally Ramachandran will inaugurate the meeting.
"The history of Pazhassi Raja is the history of resistance against imperialist forces. It is necessary to develop his ancestral home as a memorial," said P K Ravivarma Raja, a member of Pazhassi family and Pazhassi Raja Charitable Trust in a press meet on Thursday. The present ancestral home was built after the British destroyed the earlier one following the siege in 1805, which resulted in the death of Pazhassi Raja.
Though the Mattannur municipality had started the construction of a memorial at Pazhassi nearly five years ago, the work could not be completed. As of now, the only memorial is the Pazhassi Raja tomb in Mananthavady, Wayanad. "This is a great monument, which has some historic importance and it should be preserved by the state government," said K Bhaskaran Master, the vice-chairman of Mattannur municipality, who is also associated with the trust.
Though a project was submitted to the previous LDF government, which had also announced that the Kovilakam would be taken over by the department of tourism, it didn't take off due to technical reasons including the lack of interest on the part of the Pazhassi family.
The trust members have demanded that the upcoming Kannur airport be named after Pazhassi Raja.

nikhilkk March 5th, 2012, 07:03 PM KANNUR: The 50-odd nurses in the Speciality Hospital here began an indefinite strike on Sunday demanding salary hike with three months' retrospective effect and better working conditions.
The agitators said that they had given enough time to the hospital management to consider their demand, but the management followed an anti-employee approach by terminating four nursing staff.
On January 18, the registered nursing staff in six hospitals in the district had given notice to the authorities for salary hike. When the managements of the other hospitals agreed to this, the institute gave hike to only a few. As many as 35 nurses didn't get the hike, they alleged.
Following this a strike notice was given on February 8, but the management promised them that their demand would be considered. On February 29, on the day the representatives of the nursing staff in various hospitals in the state were having a discussion with the health minister and labour minister in Thiruvananthapuram, four nursing staff were terminated from here, which provoked them to launch the agitation, said the striking staff.
Nearly 100 nursing staff from other hospitals in the district also joined the agitators expressing solidarity with them.

Inaugurating the State-level enumeration for the socio-economic and caste census at a function at the Collectorate Conference Hall here on Tuesday, Mr. Chandy said that planning had been given much importance in the country from the time Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru launched the first Five Year Plan. The Five Year Plans had played a decisive role in the development of the country.

Rural Development Minister K.C. Joseph, who presided over the function, said that enumerators had been given tablet computers to carry out their work. Referring to disputes about fixing the line that divided families below and above the poverty line, he said that lack of accurate statistics was an obstacle to the proper implementation of government schemes.
K. Sudhakaran, MP; Sunny Joseph and A.P. Abdullakutty, MLAs; District Collector Rathan Kelkar; and district panchayat president K.A. Sarala were present.
The census done under the aegis of the Union Ministry of Rural Development and the Registrar-General of India, in association with the State governments, is meant to identify the beneficiaries of the 12th Five Year Plan projects and those for the development of urban and rural areas. Bharat Electronics Ltd. has provided the software for enumeration and tablet computers.
DPGMS launched
The Chief Minister also inaugurated the District Public Grievances Monitoring System (DPGMS). The District Collector can use this information technology tool to monitor public grievances, a press release issued at the function said. The National Informatics Centre has developed the software for the web-based application initially deployed in the Collectorate's intranet, the release said. It can be deployed over the Internet in future. The system allows entry of public grievances, issue of acknowledgement receipts, and recording of the Collector's special remarks, monitoring of status, and so on.

The idyllic setting of the Indian Naval Academy (INA), with the hillock, the sea and the tranquil Kavvayi backwaters forming a picturesque backdrop, offers the best ambience for a four-day camp held on the campus to inculcate leadership qualities, camaraderie, and team spirit among cadets undergoing training there.
The four-day ‘outward-bound camp,' which included exercises named Rookie, Samudramanthan, Samudrasangram, and Varuna, came to a close on April 14.
As many as 633 trainees of the INA, including 26 women, participated in the camp as they went through the arduous schedule which ranged from land and river navigation in full battle gear to under-stress weapon handling. The trainees undertook a series of exercises including crossing of water obstacles, endurance marches/runs, night navigation, jungle survival, and navigation in inland waterways.
Rookie, Samudramanthan, and Samudrasangaram were aimed at testing the limits of physical and mental endurance of the trainees. Varuna was a purely maritime exercise with focus on developing rowing and sailing skills and developing the spirit of adventure in young naval cadets, a press release issued by the INA said.
The camp concluded with a campfire on the campus. The gruelling training programme did not hamper the festivity and camaraderie of the cadets as they presented a variety of entertainment and cultural programmes to mark the culmination of the camp, the release said.
Vice-Admiral Pradeep Chauhan, INA Commandant, presented trophies and individual prizes to the winners of various competitions.

TRENDY:A student of the National Institute of Fashion Technology-Kannur displaying her creation at the Chamber Hall in Kannur on Friday.
Budding professionals in the fashion world displayed their creative innovations in design reflecting changing scenario and tastes in garmenting and home décor as they presented their projects prepared as part of their courses adapting inputs from the fashion industry.
Creativity of each of the 23 Bachelor of Fashion Technology (BF.Tech) and 29 Bachelor of Textile Design (B.Des) students of the National Institute of Fashion Technology-Kannur (NIFT-Kannur) was on display at the Chamber Hall here as the final year students were passing out after completing their four-year courses on the NIFT campus at Mangattuparamba.
While the BF.Tech students made presentations of their conceptual understanding of apparel manufacturing focussing on garmenting technology, the B.Des students displayed their physical design projects that mirrored the demands in the export and domestic sectors of the apparel and home fashion industry.
The presentation and exhibition gave a glimpse of what is happening in the fashion business, innovations, adaptations and forecasts of changing tastes in domestic and export markets.
The industry provided inputs and suggested areas to be focussed and the students came out with their own innovative findings.
Garmenting sector
“The garmenting sector that requires huge innovation is the beneficiary of the creative inputs of these students,” said Rajesh Kumar Jha, Assistant Professor in the Fashion Technology Department of NIFT here. He said that BF.Tech students focussed on production, software development, merchandising, and quality to keep in sync with the latest practices in the field of garmenting worldwide.
They were equipped to offer technical solutions to the industry, he said adding that some projects were selected as best commercially viable, most innovative, and best graduation ones.
Independent work
The final-year B.Des students, who are to work independently for export houses, gave emphasis on professional inputs in design and development of textiles and raw material.
Pallavi Patke, B.Des student, who exhibited her project featuring German home décor, said she prepared the project in consultation with a textile design firm. Only the design that the buyer accepted would be printed, she said.
“The B.Des students are working in real time in the fashion field,” said Srikanth Gella, Assistant Professor of Textile Design.
He said that textile design was a strategic value-addition that could help fashion business.
Placement
According to NIFT-Kannur authorities, while all the first batch of BF.Tech students who were passing out got placements in different parts of the country, 60 per cent of the final year B.Des students were offered placements.
There are total 250 students studying in the institution now.
The exhibition and presentation were held here under the aegis of the North Malabar Chamber of Commerce and the Kerala Textile Export Organisation.

Mr. Mohanan said that by 2015, Kerala would become a State that largely took up organic farming. As many as 29 warehouses with cold-storage facilities would be started across the State. As many as 27 agro-related projects had been approved at the Emerging Kerala summit. A.P. Abdullakkutty, MLA, presided over the inaugural session. K. Sudhakaran, MP; district panchayat president K.A. A wide range of products has also been put up by many Union and State government institutions, apart from a host of private firms. The National Horticulture Board has put up an awareness stall for farmers, along with a host of products brought out by its beneficiaries, board officials say. Honey products have been displayed by Kerala State Horticultural Products Development Corporation Ltd. (Horticorp). In my opinion the Kannur life is very good and very attractive.Because, the tourism potential for Kannur district is high. The district itself, which shares much of this natural splendour, has been a key contributor to the cultural, religious, political and industrial heritage of the state. Aslesh October 27th, 2012, 07:58 AM Now, Malabar Freedom chapatis from Kannur prison
KANNUR: Following the path taken by other central prisons in the state, the Kannur central prison is also venturing into business with the launch of chapati and curry under the brand name 'Malabar Freedom'.
"The chapati and curry marketed by the central prisons in Viyyur and Poojapura and the Kozhikode district jail have got wide acceptance because of its the quality. This inspired us to launch the venture here as well," said jail superintendent Sam Thankayyan at a media briefing to demonstrate the working of the chapati-making unit in the prison, on Friday.
He said cine actor Sanusha would inaugurate the marketing of the chapati and curry on Saturday. Municipal chairperson M C Sreeja will receive the first packet.
Nearly 80,000 chapatis are marketed by the jails in the state everyday, with Poojapura selling half the number and Viyyur the rest.
"We will be able to sell around 10,000 chapatis a day. They would be sold at Rs 2 a piece, with egg curry or vegetable curry which would cost Rs 10 each," he said.
"Though the market price is Rs 5 to Rs 7 a piece, we can sell a chapatti for Rs 2 because of the cheap labour we have," said welfare officer Mukesh K V. "We selected the name 'freedom' because that is what everyone in the jail dreams of," he added. He said the catch-line would be 'Taste the Freedom'.
He said the jail department in the state had now become a revenue-generating entity and that in the coming days jails would generate more revenue. Last year alone, jails made a profit of around Rs 3.5 crore.
"Since Kannur has a great tradition of baking, we are also exploring the possibility of manufacturing bakery products like cookies and cake here," said Mukesh.
"We are also planning to procure poultry from the open jail in Cheemeni and market chicken curry as well," he added.
"The mechanized kneading and chapati-making unit, that can make up to 2,000 chapatis an hour, costs Rs 2.40 lakh. Prison inmates are yet to master the process, hence they are a bit slow. However, they manage to make more than 1,000 chapatis in three hours, and we expect the output to increase in the coming days," said an official.
"Apart from retail sales of a packet of 10 chapatis, we will also accept bulk orders," he said. A special outlet has been set up outside the jail for this. It will function from 8am to 6pm.
Aslesh October 28th, 2012, 07:47 AM Jawahar Municipal Stadium in shambles
KANNUR: When football legend Diego Maradona made a public appearance at Jawahar Municipal Stadium in Kannur earlier this week, half of the venue was lying vacant; not because the Argentinian soccer magician failed to attract fans but the organizers blocked off some areas because it was not safe to allow spectators there. The condition of some parts of the stadium is so bad that they could collapse anytime.
"Though the issue was brought to the notice of the authorities on many occasions, they never paid attention," said sports development trust secretary T Giridharan.
"There are no changing rooms or toilet facilities here," he pointed out. "The three rooms which were intended to be changing rooms have been converted into a shop now," he said. "The municipality is only concerned about the rent from the shops and ignore the stadium," added Giridharan.
He also pointed out that the tracks were constructed in an unscientific manner. "The government should take initiatives to reconstruct the stadium in a scientific manner if they are serious about promotion of sports."
"It seems that the authorities have a negative approach towards sports. They have not set aside any fund for the renovation of the stadium though it is in a ruined condition," said the leader of the opposition in the municipal council, U Pushparaj.
However, the governing body members claimed lack of funding was the major constraint. "We are not against sports and we are planning to repair the damaged portions," said municipal councillor Adv T O Mohanan, who is a member of the ruling Congress party.
He also said the repairing would be done in such a manner that it need not be demolished in case the stadium was to be reconstructed in the near future. But, he could not commit a timeframe for the same. "The problem is that we don't get the desired crowd even for major football tournaments. So the stadium fails to generate any significant revenue," he lamented.
Meanwhile, district football association secretary Mohanan M V said, "Unlike the past, people have no time to watch any matches during the day. So the stadium should have floodlights to conduct matches in the evening hours, apart from other facilities like proper seating arrangement and scientific design and well maintained ground, which would naturally pull the crowd," he said.
He also said they would approach the municipal authorities in this connection. "Kannur has a great tradition in football, and we don't want to destroy that for the lack of a good stadium," said Mohanan.

In coming days this will become a big issue. Because people coming are not even having an id card to prove their identity. Many are good, but at the same time many bad elements too. They are indulged in burglary and all other illegal activities. Now Tambakoo and Gutkha sales have increased. Morning itself we can see these youth starting the day with Hans.
Local people are started reacting slowly and in an incident three weeks back one Bengali colony was destroyed by the people.

This is a huge huge hit. We can see a big queue of vehicles in the evening and all to buy chappathi. Even they are taking hotel orders. Ultimately what happened was the hotel people in the town are forced to reduce the price of chappathi by 1 rupee.

Minister for Cultural Affairs K.C. Joseph has said that insurance and pension schemes will be extended to theatre artistes in the State.
He was inaugurating the 12th National Theatre Festival organised by the Department of Information and Public Relations at Town Square here on Sunday.
Mr. Joseph said that theatre, the most powerful media of yesteryears, had lost its impact, while many other art forms had taken its place in public functions, especially temple festivals and other cultural celebrations. The one medium which played a major role in spreading political and ideological messages to the masses and bestowed a visual experience unlike cinema suffered mainly due to the lack of sufficient protection and financial resources, he said. Even below par television serials conquered theatre which was the primary floor for an artiste to learn the nuances of acting, the Minister said. This had made theatre lovers anxious about its future. The government would take steps to provide economic support to professional theatre troupes. The Minister said amidst its turbulent state of affairs, the seven-day festival would host a feast to the natives.
A.P. Abdullakutty, MLA, presided over the function. District Collector Rathan Kelkar, district panchayat president K.A. Sarala, municipal chairperson M.C. Sreeja, Director of Information and Public Relations A. Firoz, and Folklore Akademi chairman Muhammed Ahamed were present.
The festival, apart from staging 20 plays from Manipur, Jammu Kashmir, Mumbai, Delhi, Bihar, and Kerala, will also include workshops, seminars, exhibitions, and face-to-face programmes at the three venues.

Aslesh November 26th, 2012, 06:08 AM ‘Draupadi’ enthrals audience
http://www.thehindu.com/multimedia/dynamic/01279/25krnaz01-drama_26_1279951e.jpg
The game of dice at the court of Hastinapura came alive through mudras and expressions of Koodiyattom artiste Usha Nangiar in her ‘Draupadi’ Nangiarkoothu, presented on the first day of the week-long 12th National Theatre Festival of Kerala which began here on Sunday.
The theatre enthusiasts who turned up to watch the first performance of the festival, being organised by the Information and Public Relations Department, were visibly enthralled as Usha Nangiar presented the ‘Dyoothasabha,’ a portion of ‘Draupadi’ she choreographed herself. That portion depicted the game of dice where Draupadi is pawned by her husband Yudhishtira, leading Dussassana, a Kaurava, to disrobe her. In anger, Draupadi curses Duryodana and his people.
Usha Nangiar is an artiste of acclaim from the traditional community that performs the art form. The performance was presented by the Krishnan Nambiar Smaraka Mizhavu Kalari, Chathakudam, Thrissur. She was accompanied by V.K.K. Hariharan and Kalamandalam Rajeev on the Mizhavu and Kalanilayam Unnikrishnan on the Edakka. The ‘thaalam’ was by Athira.

Aslesh December 6th, 2012, 07:35 AM Malabar Freedom cakes to hit Christmas, New Year markets
KANNUR: With the Malabar Freedom chapatis being made in the Kannur Central Prison proving to be very popular, the jail authorities here are now looking at exploiting the Christmas and New Year markets with their own Malabar Freedom cakes.
"Since the district is also known as the cradle of Indian cake industry, cakes made here naturally have a brand value. This has made us take up this initiative tough it is a challenging one," said prison welfare officer Mukesh K V. "Since cake-making needs professional expertise, we are planning to get the help of professionals in the industry," he added.
It was in November 1883 that Mambally Bapu baked the first cake in India at his Royal Biscuit Factory in Thalassery. There was only one bakery other than this in the country then. That was in West Bengal and only catered to the British.
The jail currently produces around 32,000 chapatis and 3,000 packets of curries every day which brings in revenue of around Rs 1 lakh. Though chapati has become a common product in jails, it is for the first time that cake is being made in a Kerala jail, said the welfare officer. "To my knowledge, cakes and other bakery products are made only in the Tihar Jail currently," he said.
The prison authorities are yet to work out the finer details of cake production. "Since it is for the first time that we are exploring the cake market, we are planning to begin on a small scale. The production will be increased later gradually," said the jail official. Most probably they would begin with a traditional oven and later it would be upgraded to an electronic one, based on demand.
Jail officials are confident that they would have an edge over their competitors as their cakes would be priced economically. However, staff crunch would be an issue. Though the jail had 115 staff, 34 of them have been transferred. It would be difficult to supervise the making of chapatis and cakes without enough staff.
"The DGP has promised that the replacement of staff would be done immediately so that it would not affect any projects," said an official.
Meanwhile, with 35 prisoners observing 'vratham', the Sabarimala season has begun in the jail too.
"Though the inmates cannot visit Sabarimala, we have made all arrangements for them to observe the 'vratham' and do 'bhajans', like every year," said a jail official. Considering the special needs of these prisoners, a separate space has been provided for them in the sixth block.
They are also being supplied their quota of vegetarian ration separately so that they can prepare food on their own. Similar arrangements are made for the prisoners during Ramzan too.

Curtains went up on the sixth season of the Grand Kerala Shopping Festival at a massive opening ceremony held at the Municipal Jawahar Stadium in Kannur on Saturday evening.
The shopping festival was formally opened by Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation K.C. Venugopal. The inaugural ceremony was preceded by a programme featuring 101 percussionists led by Mattannur Sankarankutty Marar.
The dignitaries attending the ceremony lighted six traditional lamps on the stage representing six years of the festival.
In his inaugural speech, Mr. Venugopal said the GKSF this year would give an impetus to Malabar, which was on the threshold of major development in the tourism sector.
Terming the shopping festival an initiative for strengthening the economy of the State, he said the major beneficiary of the festival was the tourism sector that had an investment potential of Rs.20,000 crore and employed 10 lakh people.
The Minister said the shopping festival was also an opportunity to showcase the State’s products, skills and heritage.
Responsible shopping should be developed through the fiesta, he said adding that the Global Village being started in Kochi as part of the GKSF was an initiative that would take the festival to the level of major shopping festivals such as the Dubai Shopping Festival.
In his presidential address, Tourism Minister A.P. Anilkumar said the GKSF was becoming more popular every year thanks to the support of the trading community and the public.
In the course of a few years, it would become one of the biggest shopping events in the world, he hoped.
Agriculture Minister K.P. Mohanan; MLAs A.P. Abdullakutty, Sunny Joseph and T.V. Rajesh; actor Dileep; District Collector Rathan Kelkar; district panchayat president K.A. Sarala; and municipal chairperson M.C. Sreeja were among those who attended the opening ceremony.
The inaugural function was followed by an entertainment show, which included musical and dance programmes.

Aslesh March 15th, 2013, 08:15 PM Kannur’s date with Kate
http://www.thehindu.com/multimedia/dynamic/01395/KIMP_MANOJNA1_1395296g.jpg
Kate Middleton carried a bag made by Manojna J. Tarin on her skiing trip to the Swiss Alps. Anasuya Menon catches up with the designer who also makes home décor products
If beach bags could tell stories, this one has all the markings of a best-seller. Manufactured in a factory in Kannur, it went all the way to the Swiss Alps, resting elegantly on the Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton’s shoulder while she went sledging on snow.
Manojna J. Tarin, who made the bag, could not believe it when her client in the UK sent her an online link of the photograph in which Kate is seen sporting her bag. “One would expect people like her to use top class brands. And there she was with the bag I made,” she says. Manojna’s home décor brand, Eshana, exports to the west and has a substantial client base in the UK. “My client does not know how it reached the Duchess, but now, everybody seems to want this bag,” she says.
The roomy, faded sea blue and jute coloured cotton bag with an appliqué of a blue elephant is just one of the many “100 per cent cotton, hand-woven” products Manojna makes. The design was sent to her by the client and she got it manufactured at her unit in Kannur. “The buyer intended it as a beach bag, but now that Kate has taken it on a skiing trip, I don’t know…,” she laughs. The bag also comes in navy blue, old rose and fuchsia. “Generally, clients abroad tell us what would sell in the market there and we design and manufacture accordingly,” she says.
Home décor is so vast an area, one can go berserk with ideas, Manojna says. “A small tuck here or a button there can create a world of a difference.” Her fridge handle covers were one such idea. She made them in different colours, patterns and sizes— one of the most utilitarian things for a kitchen. Same with hand towels. While in the west, they are sent as normal towels, for the Indian market, Manojna added a little cloth clasp so that they could be hung on a peg. The buttons are either made of coconut shell or sea shells.
She is proud of her collection of ‘hostess aprons’, which are a hit in the US and European markets. A frilly apron, which resembles a dress, was designed keeping in mind the younger women. “There are a lot of bakers among young girls now. And they love the pattern. These aprons look like a dress on a dress.” The vintage-style aprons come in a variety of pastel shades.
An electronics engineer by qualification, 28-year-old Manojna could not ignore her soft spot for fashion and fabrics. “I guess it is there in my blood.” Her grandfather established the Hindustan Textiles in Kannur in 1939, which has been manufacturing and exporting the famous ‘Kannur kaithari’ (handloom). “The foundation and the goodwill were already there. All I had to do was build up on that.”
Statements in cotton
When Manojna launched her brand, Eshana, five years ago in Kannur, she was designing and selling just bags. “I would bring the leftover fabrics from the Hindustan Textile factory and use them for the bags.” Later, she moved on to accessories such as bed, table and home linens. Earlier, she made her cotton bags with jute trims. But jute would wear out soon, so she started using jute-coloured cotton trims instead. When she launched her line, cotton bags were not so popular as they are now. There was a craze for jute. Things changed and cotton is in vogue now. “The best thing about cotton bags is that they can be machine-washed and the colours will not bleed,” Manojna says.
She exports to the UK, the US, Italy, Spain, France, Sweden and South Africa. Recently, she started exporting to the Gulf countries, too.
The latest in her collection are bath towels with Angry Birds embroidered on them. These towels in high-absorbent cotton fabric are meant for children and have been priced at Rs.100. Woven floor mats, bed linen, wash bags, and kitchen cloths with embroidery are others.
Manojna moved to Kochi after she married lawyer Tarin Rajendran and is now considering opening an exclusive outlet in Kochi. Since her manufacturing unit is in Kannur, she has to shuttle between the two cities. She also makes it a point to travel abroad to keep abreast of international trends.
One of her biggest dreams is of launching an eco-friendly and organic bedding range for children. “Organic and eco-friendly cloth are two different things. Organic cloth is made of fibre, which is grown without using pesticides,” she says. Even the dyes used in organic cloth would be natural, vegetable colours.
Manojna will conduct a sale of her products along with her mother-in-law Shamerian, who will be displaying her collection of saris, in Kochi on April 5 and 6 at Lotus Club.

Aslesh March 18th, 2013, 06:04 PM Kannur jail initiatives run into a roadblock
KANNUR: Although jails in Kerala are in a revenue-generating mode by manufacturing a variety of food products. But its success has actually proved to be a burden for the staff at Kannur central prison because it is an additional responsibility that they have to undertake and that too without sufficient manpower.
"We make 40,000 chapatis plus 100 kg of banana chips a day and have plans to diversify into making jackfruit chips, but the question is of managing all these workloads with limited manpower," said a jail staff. The jail has established a separate section, Taste Factory, to produce the food articles under 'Malabar Freedom' brand, but it is not a really tasty experience for the staff, which have to do additional labour without much recognition.
Though it can be argued that the work is done by the prisoners, it needs the supervision of the staff. "Within a span of less than five months, we have given nearly Rs 60 lakh to the exchequer that too without any investment from the government, using the machineries given for the jail inmates but till date the authorities has not taken any steps to create an additional post or fill the existing vacancies," he said.
When the jail was planning to make cakes, the district collector had promised to get an oven with the cooperation of the Food Craft Institute, but the prison kitchen is yet to get it.
When the jail was built during the British period, the allotted staff strength was 105 warders and 27 head warders, but the jail atmosphere has changed and it is envisaged to be more of a reformation and rehabilitation centre and it needs to have more staff to realize that goals, they said.
Incidentally, nearly 30 of them are in training duty of State Institute of Correctional Administration (Sica), and more than half of the remaining are either appointed on daily wages or via employment exchange.
The only relief is that there are 12 special warders appointed to take care of the nearly 40 inmates who are mentally disturbed, they added. "At a time, when we have to think of man management aspects of the jail how do you expect us to make it a reality with this limited strength?" is what they ask. And it is for the authorities to give them a convincing answer.

Aslesh April 3rd, 2013, 06:59 AM Pazhayangadi swamps snag a Chinese snipe
http://www.thehindu.com/multimedia/dynamic/01415/02krnaz02-bird__03_1415712e.jpg
The swamps near Pazhayangadi here had a surprise visitor the other day. The Chinese snipe, a rare migratory bird from Mongolia and other East Asian countries, had come on a wintry flight looking for warmth.
The local birdwatchers were excited at the sight as the bird was last located here in the early part of the 20th century by Phythian-Adams, a British soldier stationed here.
Hotspots
P.C. Rajeevan, Jayan Thomas and Khaleel Chovva were the lucky three who sighted the bird and snapped it. Records show that Phythian-Adams had shot dead 15 Chinese snipes during 1925 and 1935 to identify them.
The hillocks and marshlands in the district are hotspots for migratory birds. Mr. Rajeevan, an environmental activist, Dr. Thomas, an ophthalmologist here, and Dr. Chovva, an academic, sent the photographs to other birders to get the identity of the bird confirmed.
Cryptic plumage
Dr. Thomas said the Chinese snipe ( Gallinago megala ) was a medium-sized, skulking, wading bird with short legs and long straight bill and a cryptic plumage.
It was this plumage that enabled the snipe to remain undetected by birdwatchers and hunters in marshlands. Hunters had difficulty taking aim because of the bird’s erratic flight pattern.
Etymological link
The word sniper is said to have originated among soldiers in British India where a hunter skilled enough to kill the elusive snipe was dubbed a sniper. The bird feeds on insect larvae, earthworms, spiders, beetles and small crustaceans, the birdwatchers said. The Chinese snipe comes to India, Sri Lanka and the Maldives during winter.

Aslesh April 20th, 2013, 07:48 AM Summer takes a toll on mango orchards
KANNUR: The summer heat has cast its shadow on mango cultivation in the state, bringing hardships to those who depend on this seasonal crop for a living. The impact is more visible in places like Muthalamada and Kollangod in Palakkad and Kuttiattoor in Kannur, which are known for mango cultivation.
"In Kuttiattoor, the average yield is 50 tonnes a year, and the yield goes up every alternate year. Since the yield was comparatively low last year, it was expected to go up this year. However, the yield has gone down to less than 10 tonnes now," said P P Krishnan, agriculture assistant in Kuttiattoor. The average annual revenue from mango in the district is nearly Rs 50 crore, of which a major share is from the region. He said the climate change had adversely affected the yield. "The untimely summer rains, the fog in February, March and also the heavy summer are casting its shadow on the mango crop in Kuttiattoor."
Farmers usually had an early bird advantage as mangoes in the state ripe before the mango season begins in other parts of the country.
The summer has also affected the quality of the crop. "Last year, we had sold varieties like Banganappally, Hima Pasand and Sindooram for good money, as we were paid up to Rs 1,300/kg based on their quality. We are not getting even half of that this season," said K Sivanandan, a mango farmer from Muthalamada.
"While the yield has come down by one-third, the mangoes are not that juicy this time due to the heavy summer and they have no demand in the market," said the farmer, who has nearly five acres of mango cultivation in Muthalamada and Kollangod. If the average revenue from an acre was around Rs 3 lakh till last season, they are not fetching even Rs 1 lakh now, he said.
The early ripening of mangoes in Tamil Nadu this time has also affected the market of mangoes from the state.

Aslesh May 18th, 2013, 07:25 AM A wake-up call from the stage

It could put you through deep mental agony; could jolt you to protest; and even give you sleepless nights for not having responded earlier.
Irakalodu Mathramalla Samsarikendathu , a play staged by Abhinaya Theatre Research Centre on the concluding day of the summer theatre fest at the District Bank auditorium on May 16, was a slice of life itself. Life viewed from close quarters, to be precise. The success indicator was the crowd which lingered long after the curtains went down.
Monologues by six women about the oppression they were put through set the ball rolling, moments after jarring images of real-life atrocities flashed on a background screen. The shots on the screen and the onstage performers, in a simultaneous narration, raise many disturbing questions.
The play throws at your face startling facts which are usually shrugged off every time they are raised.
That includes a flawed social system, which clams up whenever sexuality is discussed, which dons a false garb of morality when groping hands in the dark squeeze out a life.
Whose pain is the worst, of the teenager who is assaulted sexually by her father or of the little girl who was killed on the premises of a place of worship?
Whose silent suffering, of the married women who put up with their partners’ abnormalities or the victim of moral policing, is more poignant?
The play does not even faintly propose any answers or solutions. That is left to the viewer.
Narrations by the female actors are in stark contrast to the on-stage collusion between the male performers. The apathetic, and sometimes provocative, actions and the consistent pleas for mercy by victims on the screen haunt the viewer for long.
Directed by M.G. Jyothish and D. Reghoothaman, the play had on stage Shylaja P., Sujatha, Parvathi T., Chinnu Kuruvila, Surabhi, Babila, Gopalan, Anil, Baiju, Pratheesh, Ajayan, Atul, and Pradeep. The show will be staged at Thrissur, Kattappana, Kollam, and Thiruvananthapuram on May 20, May 30, June 3 and June 12 respectively.
Play asks uncomfortable questions, brings the viewer face-to-face with the plight of today’s woman.

Aslesh May 22nd, 2013, 12:14 PM Shrimp cultivation reaches harvest stage

BUMPER CATCH:Fisheries Minister K. Babu showing the shrimp he harvested from a brackish water field at Athayakunnu in Kannur on Tuesday.
The Fisheries Department’s pilot project to revive traditional brackish water paddy-shrimp farming system in an extent of total 90 hectares of ‘kaipad’ land in Kasaragod, Kannur and Kozhikode districts has now reached the harvest stage.
Fisheries Minister K. Babu inaugurated the first harvest of shrimps cultivated as part of the project at a function here on Tuesday. The Minister collected the harvested shrimps and inaugurated the first sale.
Though 90 ha of kaipad land in the three districts had been identified for revival of the paddy-shrimp farming system, the project implemented was extended to total 108 ha. The Fisheries Department officials said that the traditional rice-shrimp system could be revived in 1,200 ha of kaipad land in the district including the Kattampally basin. Shrimp growing would be an additional incentive to paddy cultivators, they noted. The project being implemented under the aegis of the Agency for development of Aquaculture, Kerala (ADAK) through self-help groups (SHGs) envisaged revival of the kaipad lands (brackish water areas) in the three districts.
As many as 16 SHGs of beneficiaries have been formed, including 10 in Kannur and three each in Kasaragod and Kozhikode.
Land has been made available to the groups on lease for a period of not less than five years. The traditional kaipad farming system is a rotational as well as simultaneous farming of paddy and shrimps. During monsoon, when the salinity is very low, a crop of paddy is cultivated, and shrimps are grown during the rest of the year.
The system involved the traditional capture-based aquaculture known as shrimp filteration.
K. Shaji, MLA, presided over the function. K. Sudhakaran, MP, disbursed the second instalment of the subsidy for the beneficiary farmer groups.

Aslesh June 9th, 2013, 02:04 PM Stepping across the linguistic barrier
KANNUR: When 10-year-old Aman Singh passed to fifth standard from ThayatheruGLPS in Kannur town this year, his parents wanted him to join the Goverment High School in Chovva where his elder brother studies, but he wanted to join Goverment U P School, Thavakkara for his own reasons.
"When he came to know that I was to be transferred to a school in Thavakkara, this north Indian boy also wanted to accompany me to the new school, because he is one of our most pampered students," says Rajitha TV, headmistress at Goverment UP School at Thavakkara, who said there are two Hindi-speaking migrant students in the school.
Migrant children are not rare in government schools across the state, though they are yet to be recognized as a significant presence. And kids like Aman are quite at ease with learning Malayalam.
"Though it was a bit tough at first, now it's easy and I can read and write very well," said Aman in chaste Malayalam, adding in Hindi that he is equally conversant in his mother tongue. A similar situation exists at Goverment U P School, Devatharkandy at SN Park Roadin the heart of the town where nine of the total 50-odd students are Hindi-speaking kids. "IThis has been the condition for the last few years and i
n my knowledge, this trend is not limited to Kannur. English medium schools are causing a slow poisoning effect on schools like ours, due to which Keralites prefer not to admit their children in these schools," said M Balakrishnan, the head teacher there.
"Since there is a language barrier in teaching these kids, initially we take the help of the Hindi teacher. However, they are smart and become fluent in Malayalam, within six months, easily acquiring bilingual skills," he said.
Though children of migrant labourers especially north India, join Malayalam schools because they have no other choice, it is a positive trend, especially when Keralites avoid Malayalam-medium schools to embrace English, said C R Vijayanunni, deputy director of education, Kannur.
Since statistical data is available on the number of non-Keralites studying in schools here, it is time to conduct a survey on such students in Malayalam-medium schools and devise strategies to make studies easier for them, he suggested.
"In the coming years, they may form a major chunk of the student population in government schools in Kerala. Hence we should initiate steps to teach them Hindi too at the primary level, which would be beneficial for them. We had successfully implemented this model in GLPSKanjikode in Palakkadduring the previous government's rule, where many children of north Indian labourers study," he said.
When native students embrace English-medium schoolsout of middle-class pomposity, hardly bothering about the quality of education, it is interesting to watch Hindi-speakers embrace our mother tongue with a classical status even if it is out of compulsion, Vijayanunni said.
