It's alright, though the podium looks terrible. I would expect something much more grander for such an prominent location and wealthy iconic Darwin brand.

Last-minute shift puts tower in mall

THE $84 million office and shopping complex planned for Darwin city centre was originally going to be built over the historic Victoria Hotel.[/B]

Paspaley Pearl Properties drew up radical plans for a building that would have dominated the heart of Darwin but preserved the old pub.

Company managing director James Paspaley said it wasn't until the last minute that it was instead suggested developing the group's head office at the end of the Smith Street Mall.

"Strangely enough, sometimes you don't think about bulldozing the house you're living in," he said.

Mr Paspaley said planners and architects looked at all the other company properties before deciding to redevelop the high-profile corner.

Work on the 20-storey office, commercial and retail block will begin at the end of next year.

The Paspaley Building tenants, including the pearl showroom, will be relocated until the new complex is finished early in 2015.

"We want to keep our (existing) tenants, so we have to find somewhere good for them temporarily," Mr Paspaley said.

The building's facade, including the white pillars, will be retained.

The NT Government kickstarted the development by putting out a tender for 9000sq m of "green" office space.

The new building - which will be called the Charles Darwin Centre - will have to meet a five-star Nabers rating.

Chief Minister Paul Henderson said the complex would help rejuvenate Smith Street Mall.

The Paspaleys' Charles Darwin Centre project will not include any apartments.

But a 14-storey office, shopping and residential complex is planned for next to the Victoria Hotel further down the mall.

A GREENER-than-green tower block is to be built in the heart of Darwin.

The 20-storey project will lead to the redevelopment of the Paspaley building at the end of Smith Street Mall.

Chief Minister Paul Henderson said the historic facade of the block would be retained.

Territory-based Paspaley Pearls Properties won the tender to supply the Government with 9000sq m of office space.

The Government will be the "anchor tenant" for at least 15 years, a contract worth enough to get the project off the ground.

But the $84 million building - which will be called the Charles Darwin Centre - will include other office, commercial and retail space. It will have a five-star Nabers green rating.

Chief Minister Henderson said that keeping the old facade "would maintain a link with Darwin's past, while heralding its exciting future".

He said the project would support about 100 construction jobs, including 12 apprentices, and more work when it was finished.

The Chief Minister said the development would help renew the city centre. Work will start at the end of next year. Mr Henderson said the project should be ready for public servants in 2015.

The Government also wants to rent green space in Alice Springs, which could lead to the building of a new office and retail centre.

There are also several other Darwin CBD projects under way or on the drawing.

Architect George Kapetas wants to build a 14-storey office, shop and apartment complex next to the Victoria Hotel.

And Ernie Koch is spending $6 million on renovating the 40-year-old ANZ building in Smith Street.

yeah but the podium will be a little taller than just one floor. plus plant box on top. might be around 90m?

an architectual feature could put it over 100 ;)

I am aware that darwin has height restrictions that are pretty low. 120m RL or something. whats the tallest it could possibly be in this location?

Paspaleys drive Darwin’s tallest tower
Darwin-based pearling family the Paspaleys are behind plans to develop the city’s tallest building.

chapman- im not sure what ground RL is on that site, but probably close to 20m, thus if this tower is 90m, thats RL110m, which is 10m short of Evolutions height of RL120m..
btw,its a great location.

hmm it'll be a shame for us scraper heads if they have the chance to go for 100m and don't. but still 90m tower will stick out heaps in darwin.

i like the fact it's gotta bit of distance between itself and the other talls. spreads the skyline out a bit.

Read this in the Fin Review also. Hopefully this will give the mall a chance for more activity.

Great news.

Bid winners “excited” to build Darwin’s tallest tower

NOVEMBER 28TH, 2011

AUBJ — November 28 — A local contracting firm has won a bid to build Darwin’s tallest building.

Paspaley Pearls Properties won a tender to build the A$84 million Charles Darwin Centre, and selected architectures peckvonhartel (http://www.pvh.com.au/) to develop a masterplan and design the 20-storey development.

The tower will become the tallest in Darwin and will provide anchor tenant, the Northern Territory Government, with 9,000 square metres of A-grade commercial office space for the next 15 years.

Paspaley general manager for properties Mark Jagla said: “The design was a key component to Paspaley being selected as the preferred tenderer. The building will further enhance the redeveloped Smith Street Mall and will be a significant addition to the City of Darwin.”

The project will support approximately 100 construction jobs, which includes 12 apprentices, and further jobs upon completion, with construction scheduled to start at the end of 2012 and completion of the 5-star NABERS Green Rated scheduled for 2015.
Marten Peck, principal of peckvonhartel, said the firm was excited to be part of the project.

“The design impetus is to provide an innovative building that is truly outstanding, both for the Northern Territory Government tenant and for the benefit of the Darwin community as a whole,” Peck remarked.
