Elvis in, Savabeel maybe

Caulfield Cup winner Elvstroem is almost a certainty to run in the Melbourne Cup, his owners have confirmed.

Owner Frank Tagg told the Courier Mail that the four-year-old stallion would contest the two-mile classic and bypass this Saturday's MacKinnon Stakes (2000m)

That was confirmed when nominations for Saturday's race were released at 11pm on Wednesday revealing that Elvstroem would not run this weekend.

Trainer Tony Vasil had initially ruled that the son of Danehill would not contest the $4.5 million Cup but after a soft run in the Cox Plate, where he had no luck, he has reviewed his decision. Elvstroem was $17 before the decision but is expected to shorten significantly.

Meanwhile, Cox Plate winner Savabeel is only a 40 per cent chance of running in Tuesday's big race according to trainer Graeme Rogerson.

Rogerson advised punters to save their money until Saturday night when a decision will be made based on his efforts in the Victoria Derby (2500m).

"I have been known to change my mind," Rogerson said. "Nothing is set in concrete. At this stage he's not running. I don't want anyone to back him in the Cup until Saturday night. That's when we have to make up our mind."

"I'm not saying the horse is past the post. My other horse, Cedar Manor, has been better trained in that he's been aimed at 2500m while Savabeel was prepared for the Cox Plate."

"Remember, Octagonal couldn't do it. But the horse gets in so well weighted. There are four million reasons (prizemoney) why I should run him."

I dunno. Its just another boring horse race to me Culwulla and thats pretty much how the majority of the youth these days think [based on my experiences in High School]

Its kinda sad really because it has so much history behind it.

Yeah, horse races don't really excite me...but we are gonna finish uni an hour early tomorrow cause our lecturer wants to go watch the race at the pub, so that's something good I guess, lol.

lol. that's fair enough, but the youth dont have much idea about anything really, so it's not really an unexpected statement. The Melbourne Cup carnival isnt targeted at some 16 y.o teenager anyway. they're more inetrested in getting wet over the latest CD cover from this month's heartthrob performer.

These days it's more than just a horse race. there are lots of people who think it's important even if the youth dont think so.

It should be a national holiday, so maybe we could bridge the gap between, 'just another horse race' and a cultural event.

Cheers

HAHAHA true about the youth. But what happens in 10-15years time when these teenagers are adults?

Im 20 now and nothings changed yet among my peers at work/uni and just in general.

Maybe the national holiday would help though!

Well to answer your question. When i was teenager i never thought about about going to a race day. Things change, you change, ie) you grow up.

i knew nothing at 20, so your time will come.

remember, the 20's are for learning, and the 30's for earning.

I Don't know what the weather's like in Melbourne, but there is a fucking huge hail storm here in sale as I write this. My very lavish defence accomodation complete with tin roof is sounding like it's going to cave in and the windows are going to smash. I've been in many hail storms in queensland but normally in modern houses with tiled roofs.

Anyway, this can't be good for Melbourne Cup. I imagine the weather is similar in Melbourne.

I can't see why the Melbourne Cup would have much impact on a twenty year old from paramatta, but in Melbourne, particularly in the city, the Cup carnival is a major social event. Believe me, today Flemington will be packed full of twenty-somethings, including some of the best looking girls in the country! It's good to see the beautiful people wearing more than just jeans and a t-shirt. It's a great day to get out amongst it, and enjoy yourself.

1. Makybe Diva
2. Vinnie Row
3. Zazzman

Who would have thought Makybe Diva would win again?

skytalk
November 2nd, 2004, 05:52 AM
According to ninemsn

Makybe Diva wins Melbourne Cup
15:25 AEST Tue Nov 2 2004

Makybe Diva, ridden by Glen Boss and trained by Lee Freedman, has won the Group One $4.6 million Melbourne Cup (3200m) at Flemington.

Makybe Diva beat Vinnie Roe and Zazzman.

Makybe Diva became the first mare to win the Cup twice in its 143-year history.

She also set a weight-carrying record for a mare
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
what do they mean by makybe diva was the first horse to win 2 in a row, didnt think big, rain lover and archer do this before?

I put a win and place on both Makybe Diva and Vinnie Roe, but like Culwulla, I should have put more money on it! Barely worth trudging up to the TAB to claim it!

lol tony, i put a Win and Place on Vinnie Roe... i didnt have to do anyhting for it tho. Parents went n put the bet on and collected $$
so in reality i got money for doing nothing, be it little money.

If i had put all my money on Makybe Diva, that would have been worth it.

I had about 9 bets all up. won 2 of them.

Ended up losing $10 overall- could have been much worse.

A taxi driver friend rang at 9.00 am to say he was putting $10 on Makybe Diva to win the Melbourne Cup, and was I going to back it also?. I said, today I am not even leaving the house, or will not even put $1 on any horse. Oh well, I was glad to see the Cup come to South Australia again, and I hope that 5 story hotel goes ahead in Port Lincoln.

Man, after Brew in 2000 and Makybe Diva 2003/2004 I'm just going to start putting money on the horse that has the closest ties to my hometown. 3 out of 5 sounds like good odds to me!

The race itself had 2,471,000 TV viewers across the 5 capital cities according to OZTam pretty good for a working day except in metro Melbourne.
