העיר אריאל היא התנחלות השוכנת בלב השומרון, שהוקמה בשנת 1978, ובשנת 1998 הוכרזה כעיר. ראש העירייה הנוכחי, רון נחמן, נמנה עם מייסדי היישוב. העיר ממוקמת בגובה של 706 מטר מעל פני-הים. מבחינה טופוגרפית היא בנויה על גבעה המשתרעת לאורך 6 ק"מ. השם אריאל הוא שם נרדף לירושלים ולבית המקדש, ונלקח מהתנ"ך: "הוי אריאל אריאל קריית חנה דוד ספו על שנה חגים ינקפו..." (ישעיהו, כ"ט, א'). יש המכנים אותה "בירת השומרון".
אוכלוסיית אריאל היא חילונית ברובה.
