During the 1st of December holiday, I was lucky to spend a couple of hours in Câmpulung Muscel town, located in southern Romania, in the historic province of Valachia and in the geographic region of Muntenia.

After visiting it, I came to the conclusion that it is one of those cities which maintain a true, real and powerful Romanian heritage, at least in terms of architecture, because its' buildings are representative for the history of the region and most important, of the country. Not to mention that it once was the first capital of the Romanian country of Valachia, between 1330 and 1364, when this privilege was given to Curtea de Argeş. This is due to the fact that under the constant pressure of the Hungarians, the Valachians had to unite under a single ruler. It was Basarab I who defeated Carol Robert of Hungary at the battle of Posada, strengthening his army and country so that Hungarians will stay away, beyond the Carpathians.

The city is also known as the mediaeval cultural centre of Romanians, because in this city there were libraries, schools and also the oldest paper manufactury in the country. The first documents in Romanian were written here.

Traditional occupations in the town and in the region include wood processing, pottery, stonemasonry, bakery, traditional alcohol production (wine and ţuica, distilled alcohol) as well as many others. They also make good cakes and pastry. :)

Those who want to cast a glance into real Romania's heart should go to the old Romanian towns located at the feet of Central (Southern) Carpathians, because these cities developed by constantly gathering goods and people both from the mountains and the lowlands. The other, bigger cities are too cosmopolite, modern and indulge themselves in a hectic, hedonistic way of life.

Back to these days, the buildings show the traces of history.
Although there are quite real and productive means of exploiting the historic heritage of this Romanian town, it seems that the municipality leaders don't get involved too much in improving residents' standard of life, as far as I could see.

Sorry for the mess in the pictures, it was a quick passing by and I couldn't concentrate on certain subjects. This is what I could realise during my walk. Hopefully, there will be some volunteers willing to bring in additional material on the subject.

I like a hectic and hedonist life :) But Campulung Muscel looks all right, some good architecture. What about atmosphere/cafes/restaurants/museums for a day in the town? What is there to do more specifically, since I am intrigued enough to consider a visit?

For me there will always be a big conection between this town and the novel "Ultima noapte de dragoste intaia noapte de razboi" - (Last Night of Love, First Night of War) by Camil Petrescu. Even in the pictures above i was expecting to see Stefan Gheorghidiu passing trough..isn't it?

Well, there is certainly something to do in this town, and one good thing is eating some dessert at the 'Iepuraşul' confectionery. :)

Unfortunately, we didn't stay long enough as to have a lunch, but I'm sure there are a few good places to eat, because I've seen a few pensions there. So the touristic industry is quite present in the town.

As touristic attractions, I could name a few, besides those mentioned by bgp (to whom I thank by the way):

-Biserica Domneasca (1567)
-Biserica Subesti (1551)
-The famous 'Pardon' Boulevard, because of the overcrowding, everybody was using this expression.
-The 'Merci' Park, named like this because the young ladies used this term to thank to the young men who threw confetti on them.
-History and Arts Museum, in my photo, on the Pardon Boulevard.

Those wonderful houses are to be found outside the city centre, towards the North-Eastern part of the town.

I was taking pictures on a remote street, and because there were few cars, I left the pedestrian path and stepped to the road, heading to take a shoot of a house. There was a car approaching, an old Dacia, and the young driver, maybe Stefan Gherghidiu, stopped there as not to disturb my picture. I took my picture, appreciated and thanked for his gesture by bowing my head, and he also saluted me, in a military way. Too many coincidences ? :D

Alright, here's a photo with the neoromanian fence of "Merci" Park (nice name, goes well with the Boulevard :) ) and another one with some of the busts found in the park. My pic is quite bad, but the busts were, in my opinion, impressive and of surprisingly high artistic quality.

I'm afraid I don't have much more information about Campulung, other than what's been said already. The town has a nice atmosphere, thanks to it's beautiful, intact, old urban tissue, the animated "Pardon" Boulevard and the park next to it. It definitely deserves a visit, and one could easily fill up a day strolling and visiting the churches and museums.

Flickr is a professional-oriented service and doesn't compete with free services like Photobucket. That's why their hosting is paid, but for that you get much better services.
