Asian December 8th, 2011, 07:42 PM many khmer in japan ? they are just only 311 registered khmer people living there. I agree. Not so many Khmers live there. Most of them are children of refugees in the 70s and 80s. Many of those refugees have moved on to other countries like Canada, US, Australia, and other European countries for some reasons. Living in Japan is not so easy as seen if you are not Japanese born or whites and you don't have a good salary job. Even though Japan welcomes visitors and business people, to become Japanese citizen is one of the hardest things to do in Japan. Having said that Japan is the best and fascinating country to visit (and live 6 months a year if you are rich enough) in Asia, if not in the entire world. The people are in general very polite and considerate, the culture is unique, the nature is one of the best in the world, and the food is awesome. I don't mind to visit Japan every year. Save money! The Festival, organised by the Japanese embassy and the Cambodia-Japan Co-operation Centre, will open at 6pm on Thursday with a performance by AUN, a group that plays traditional Japanese instruments. A highlight of the festival will be the Cambodian premiere of We Cannot Change the World But We Wanna Build a School in Cambodia, a movie adapted from a 2008 book by Japanese writer Kota Hada. Osamu Mukai, a famous actor and a goodwill ambassador between Japan and Cambodia, plays Kota Hada in the story about his experience travelling in rural Cambodia to build a school. The movie, screened last year in Japan, served to introduce Japanese audiences to social realities in Cambodia. “What Japanese people know about Cambodia is mainly Angkor Wat, the Khmer Rouge or land mines, but they don’t know how hard it is for children in the countryside to go to school,” says Machida Tatsuya, counsellor of the Japanese embassy in Cambodia. This will be the first time Cambodians have a chance to see the film, which will be screened, with Khmer subtitles, at 6pm on Friday. Other highlights of the festival include a room with traditional tea ceremony, a concert by popular Japanese pop group Ram Wire at 6pm on Saturday and karate and kendo demonstrations at 4pm on Saturday. The festival will be held from February 16 to 19 at the Cambodia Japan Co-operation Centre, in Russian Boulevard, near the Royal University. The total number of applications in 2011 was the highest since 1982 when Japan began its refugee recognition system, the ministry's Immigration Bureau said, adding that the rise is partly due to an increase in cases in which the same person applies again. As for the drop in number of approved cases, a bureau official said, "It's the result of screening each case. It's not that the requirements were toughened." The cumulative total of applications filed over 30 years through the end of last November came to 11,754, with 598 of them approved, according to the bureau. Those recognized as refugees included 307 people from Myanmar, 69 from Iran, 59 from Vietnam, 50 from Cambodia and 48 from Laos. The number of foreigners who were not given refugee status but were allowed to stay in Japan on humanitarian grounds totaled 1,994. In 2011, those who applied for refugee status included 491 from Myanmar, 251 from Nepal and 234 from Turkey. There was a case in which an individual applied for the fifth time, as there is no limit on the number of times an application can be filed by the same person. The number of foreigners who were allowed to stay in Japan on humanitarian grounds totaled 248 last year, down by 115 from 2010. The News was greeted by mixed reactions, with some saying they want Neko to be a bridge between the two nations, while others said taking part in the Olympic Games by changing one's nationality is disrespectful to Cambodian athletes. "I'd like to run in London with the goal of establishing a world record," said Neko, 34, at a press conference held last Monday in Sumida Ward, Tokyo, following the announcement. The comedian's real name is Kuniaki Takizaki. His hands were shaking, apparently from nervousness, as he spoke of his strong determination. Neko usually wears a red T-shirt with the message "Neko Damashii" (cat's soul). But on that day he wore a suit and tie. Neko ran in the 2008 Tokyo Marathon, his first time to try a full marathon. In December 2010, he came in third in a marathon held in Cambodia. His performance caught the attention of the Cambodian government, who proposed he obtain Cambodian nationality and take part in the London Olympics. Neko responded favorably and received his Cambodian citizenship last November. Concerning criticism of his participation in the Olympics by changing nationality, Neko said: "I know there are harsh opinions against me. But I have committed to this decision and plan to see it through to the end." Many people have posted criticism of Neko on the Internet, writing things like "It's disrespectful to serious, dedicated athletes that a TV personality would participate in the Olympics in a playful mood," and "Neko only wants to be in the spotlight." Yuko Arimori, the women's marathon silver medalist at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, also criticized Neko. Arimori, who has organized a charity marathon to support Cambodia, told The Yomiuri Shimbun in a tearful voice, "I'm extremely disappointed, thinking about the feelings of young runners [in Cambodia] who gave up the Olympic seat to a Japanese candidate." Previously, Arimori had invited Hem Bunting, 26, a Cambodian marathon runner who contested the Olympic seat against Neko, to a competition in Japan. "Cambodian runners have improved their ability despite a poor training environment. I want local athletes to participate [in the Olympics]," said Arimori. But Toshihiko Seko, director of the Japan Association of Athletics Federations, is supportive of Neko. "We hail Mr. Neko as he won the position on his own. I hope he will be a bridge between Japan and Cambodia," he said. In Cambodia, however, Neko's participation in the Olympics has apparently not drawn much public attention. A 25-year-old Cambodian student who came to Japan four years ago said: "There is no doubt that Mr. Neko is a Cambodian irrespective of his birthplace. As many people in Cambodia can't afford to enjoy sports due to poverty, I want Mr. Neko to give them a boost." Sim Vireak, first secretary at the Cambodian Embassy in Tokyo, said he hoped Japanese people would become more interested in Cambodia by watching Neko's challenges. Neko is only one of a group of athletes who have changed their nationality to take part in international competitions. Yuko Kawaguchi took part in the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympic Games in figure skating, representing Russia after she changed her nationality from Japan. Naoya Tsukahara, a member of the gymnastics team that took gold for Japan at the 2004 Athens Olympics, is now applying for Australian nationality to participate in future Olympic Games on behalf of that nation. While most of these athletes have moved their homes to the respective countries, Neko still lives in Tokyo and plans to keep training in Japan. Because Neko works as a local comedian, he said he plans to "return" to Cambodia only when marathon races are held. === Top runner among Cambodians Neko ran his first marathon in 3 hours 48 minutes, but he has improved his time every year since then. In the Beppu-Oita Mainichi Marathon in February this year, he achieved his best time so far, 2:30:26. It was also the best time compared to Cambodian candidates. There is an exceptional rule for Olympics track and field events that allows a country without any athletes who meet Olympic qualifying standards to select one male and one female athlete to participate in any of the events. Neko, despite having failed to meet the Olympic "B" qualifying time of 2 hours 18 minutes, qualified under this special rule. Cambodia Dream, a Tokyo-based company that sponsored Neko's application for Cambodian nationality, said applicants are normally required to live in the country for more than seven years to acquire nationality. But Neko was exempted from this rule as the company has a local office in Cambodia that served as his guarantor.
