That's smart!
I was thinking of using this with taxis. Instead if having to flag them down, use some kind of system that lets you send out a "ping" and alert nearby taxis. Would eliminate the need to call, and could be useful during the night in areas that aren't busy...I was always stranded in Shanghai lol

Sorry for lately reply ,

This is the world's largest single building (1.38 million square meters)
Bigger than the Beijing International Airport Terminal 3 (1 million square meters)

So far , it is still in the constract , there are very few photos . It is located in south suburb of Chengdu.

Are there any resorts (not necessarily "luxury") that one can visit in those areas?

One of the reasons I want to visit Chengdu and Chongqing is because I want to visit that area of Sichuan (especially the area near Tibet. I didn't get to appreciate China's environment when I was in Shanghai....So, what would be a company for instance that runs lodging in those areas? And would I need to take a bus, or are there some train services?

Sorry for lately reply:
If you want travel those places , eating authentic Sichuan food, skiing, hiking, viewing historic sites, you can choose the travel company .They have a lot of types of services, such as providing advice and guides. You can contact them on internet or after you arrive to Chengdu .
Those areas which I put photo before , is located around center , North or South of Sichuan ,it is not near the Xizang (Tibet) .

This is a travel location map , the small blue square showing you where the mountains and famous travel place is . The neighbor province from west direction is Xizang province .Siguniangshan(Girl four mountains) from Chengdu drive is only 4 hours, Xiling Snow Mountain 2 hours, the Emeishan 3 hours, the world natural heritage "Jiuzhaigou"is located in northern Sichuan.
You can also pay a friends who is from Sichuan , or contact one of travel groups in Sichuan, I know a lot of this information and advertising in youth hostels of Chengdu .
In Sichuan Mountaineering very popular among Europeans. That can be heard every year climbers, distress or even had died ... The public tour bus is the cheapest choice, have direct access to the tourist destination of the bus routes. You can also choose the car rental, so you can enjoy the scenery along the way.

Thanks big-dog
I recognized the last one is taken by 2011, other photos 3-4 years ago .
I really like the photo of kuanxiangzi alley , it reminds me of the days I was in Chengdu.

Chun Xi Road is an old commercial street, there is always a lot of tourists, the local Chengdu people rarely go there shopping.
I don't know why there are attract tourists , maybe because it is old .
Chunxi Road has now become a totaly "tourist street" as Nanjing Road in Shanghai.

Chengdu does have very good quality buildings (especially!!! as of late), but yes - they're not in the same highrise league as CQ, SH, SZ, GZ, ... NJ

But then again, that's ok - because Chengdu is smaller than them.

Chengdu is just a typical normal chinese major city , it is in the developing not developed .

There are numbers of foreign tourists with mental illness , just they never look at himself .

They specialize in looking for the dirty corner, waiting for bad weather, then use ugly angle to take pictures when they are travel chinese city .

Maybe because they want find the China that they want see and match their morbid and the impression from their poor education.

Actually I never see any Chinese tourist do same thing when they are traveling eventhough it is very easy .

look at this news :
Happend 2009 in Chongqing :

The two foreign tourists specialize in looking for the dirty corner ,also looking for someone to meet their furnishings posture pictures.
The chinese who take this photo said :"When this two foreign tourists discovered that they were shot by me , they show me an despicable face"

^^ you can't say they are ill-minded. People tend to look for anything different from their home city, good or bad. that's the nature of traveling.

I think it comes from the fact that in europe, we would never take pictures of tourists just because they were tourists. That is considered rude and mockingly.

The tourist thinks "lets take pictures of this, because this was interesting".

The local goes "haha, look at that farmer not being used to our culture. I'm going to highlight that he doing something odd".

The tourist goes "what the fuck is he doing? Is he mocking me?"

I don't know if this is cultural or not, but it would answer your question. Ofcourse the local might not allways think like that, but in europe it would be the general thought from the tourists perspective that he was.

About the dirty city corner, it is nothing but "art". Yeah, art guys are weired... art in the west is to highlight topics in the society. Let the mind stray. It has nothing to do with PR at all. It is about expressionism.

There is an old saying that the strangest thing in africa that met the european ethnographers was not the large rings in their ears or the click click language, it was the presense of a white man taking pictures of them :) So it has nothing to do with looking down on other cities/cultures/people, but it is about taking in new impressions. The point might not allways be to take pictures of something ugly. But it could be to take a dirty picture and put it into a new light. Be it fast modernization, social differences or abstract ideas put into strange contexts. It could even be a picture in a 365 day photo serie (https://www.google.no/search?q=365+photo&hl=no&rlz=1C1GGGE_noSG415SG415&prmd=imvnsa&source=lnms&tbm=isch&ei=n4KTT-eDGsH64QTFybzQDw&sa=X&oi=mode_link&ct=mode&cd=2&ved=0CBoQ_AUoAQ&biw=1366&bih=626&sei=pIKTT7O0FsiH4gT6z631BA#hl=no&rlz=1C1GGGE_noSG415SG415&tbm=isch&sa=1&q=project+365&oq=project+365&aq=f&aqi=g-L6&aql=&gs_nf=1&gs_l=img.3..0i19l6.126898.129818.0.130284.11.11.0.2.2.0.92.718.9.9.0.yWdbPSuUM9A&pbx=1&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_qf.,cf.osb&fp=37defd810279e103&biw=1366&bih=662). Those normally just try to focus on diversity of focus points. It is impossible to know.

Edit: another possible take on this:

Local: "what are you doing here taking pictures?"

Foreign tourists: "we specialize in taking pictures of dirty corners"

If it was me, that would have been a joke. I'm guessing the photographers had just a sense of humor, and this is what it leads to.
I bet that if those people had read this, they would have been laughing.

I bet that if those people had read this, they would have been laughing.

Nowday , so much chinese have the experience to travel the anywhere of the world . But there're no chinese do samething like the numbers of the foreign tourists in China .

Actually I feel that you are doing the PR for their "ART" behavior and try to give a reasonable explanation for their "ART" behavior .

In fact, they let me feel inferior , who knows ?

A:"There're not traffic lights in China !"
B:"Have you been to China ?"
A:"No , I dont want and don't need ."
B:"How did you know ?"
A:"I'm sure , that's all "
B:"............."

After one month A secrets travel to China :
"Ohh they have traffic lights ! But I should find somewhere doesn' have ! ""OYEAH , I found here and I shoud take a photo !! "

After A comeback to his country , he show this photo to his chinese friend : " Look ! There're not traffic lights in your country ! I was very suprised !! "

Well, PR is an interesting subject. Alot of people tends to think it has a negative impact, and is only about deceiving people. In fact if you do deceive people that is not good PR. If you deceive them it is a lie, and then you are not doing your work.

PR is actually about mediating decissions to the general public (I just studied this last year). So perhaps what I was doing was in fact PR. But it was the good PR, because as far as I analyze those two guys, they look like artists, and artists are like that. Artists also never really think about the feelings of the public at large. I think you might want to read more into european art to understand this. But I guess it is clear here that we are talking about a cultural difference.

Also, chinese people might not have been travelling around the world for very long, and perhaps the european/north american feeling is more of one world. So we don't think of China as so far from home. In USA the ideology is in fact that they have to save the rest of the world. They are a country of immigrants who got away from the oppression in their old countries. So now USA has to go and fix the regimes in every other country in the world. In China's case, the fast pace of modernization has lead to the government skipping many hurdles. There are huge social differences and not everything is as shiny on the inside as what we see here on the forum at times. Ofcourse the chinese leadership has a good point when they say USA/EU had the same issues a hundred years ago with social differences. But when a european travels around in the world. At least someone young like those in the picture, we want to see the world how it is now, and then maybe in 20 years we come back to see how much it has changed. I'm not sure how much a street corner has to do with that, but people are different, and the context of the picture is the key here (like I mentioned in my last post)

When it comes to the educationsystem in europe we are being taught to express ourselves in new ways. There should be no set of strict rules. Those only hurt the imagination. Especially for arts student this is important. So most artists have their own thing. It might be weired and hard to understand, but it is their take on the world.

Like this one (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eivcagwvbQk&feature=related) from Sweden last week. It was perceived as racist from the local african immigrants in sweden. But it was only to highlight a big problem in africa with sterilization of women, and if anything, that is NOT racism. What I am trying to say is that judging incidents like this before you know every aspect of it can cause no good. After all assumptions are the mother of all fuckups.

An africans view on it here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l6wELUktllQ&feature=related)
See the difference from the CNN report?

Basically thinking positively of other people is a good start.

PS: Lost in translation is the fact that the artist is half african himself.

Edit: In a completely different situation I know what you mean when you say it makes you feel inferior. I've lived in Singapore myself, and I noticed some of that. It happened to me one night I was out partying that I sat next to a chinese guy. It was my first time there and I was not full of energy this night. The chinese guy asked me if I was interrested in some of the girls who were dancing there. I told him "no, not here". It was at one of those places who has too many prostitutes. After this he starts asking me if he can show me another place where I can get "sexy pretty CHEAP" girls. I look at him a bit odd and replies "I'm not here to buy some girl. I'm here because I'm meeting someone here". After a little bit he comes back and asks me again if he could show me the prostitutes. So I ask him what the fuck he is trying to do. Is he their pimp, or does he get comission of some kind?

Clearly there is a cultural gap here. He claims I'm talking down to him, and I tell him that if there is one single thing a foreigner shuold never do to a norwegian when he is trying to have a good time, is to nag at him wanting him to spend more money (be it a girl, buying something or anything else). I've seen countless of fights between a scandinavian and americans where the americans wants to talk business during a party. The scandinavian just want to have fun asking the american either pay him "for doing work", or simply shut up.

These cultural differences aren't race specific at all, but it is hard to understand them unless you try to. On the subject of PR, just think of the word "rethorics". In english it has a bad connotation. Guess what, in french and scandinavian it is neutral word only describing ways of expression. As a chinese you might think europeans are all teh same, but we are anything but alike. That goes towards art, and it goes in business as well.

The founding father of Public Relations was an austrian-american named Edward Bernays, but as I studied PR in Singapore I noticed alot of asian academics in this field too. It is also something that was bound to be "invented" one day. I'm not even sure I would use that word for such a thing.

And I've been to China a few times myself, and taken lots of pictures. But thank you. The modernization is really incredible. In fact new chinese cities are much cleaner than most european cities and even Hong Kong is alot dirtier (I know it is chinese, but its wages are so high that it gets more costly to keep it clean). But I suppose alot of Chinese don't realize this. In most of the rest of the world, keeping cities clean is forgotten, so the fact that you do in fact find some small dirty corners in China is something I myself hunted for as well. :p Not because the corners were dirty, and I didn't take pictures of them, but because the rest of the city was so clean and new.

When it comes to the inferiority you say you feel, as a european/north american it strikes us as a bit odd that you do. We consider east asians be it japanese, korean or chinese (the whole sinosphere) to have the same sense of dedication towards work. And looking at the japanese, they are anything but an underdeveloped nation, so for us the chinese not being as developed is nothing but an indication of poor leadership in the past. But I do understand that you see the world through other lenses. You are not japanese, and chinese people have lived in poverty for so long.

About 200 years ago, Napoleon returned from China and said, "That is a sleeping dragon. Let him sleep! If he wakes, he will shake the world."

Edit: Eating insects aint that bad. Lots of proteins! :p

It's really because modern office towers are not that interesting to look at...If you are wandering around a city and come across a place like this

http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1330/5154795424_c07e960106_b.jpg

It is far more interesting, because you are seeing how average people live. That's all, really...I don't think they have an "agenda."

With urban population of 5.29 million, Chengdu could hardly be called a "small city".

Compared to the aformentioned cities, Chengdu is smaller - and there's nothing wrong with that.

Bigger doesn't always mean better, I think Chengdu would suck heavily if it were as large as those cities. In fact, I'd like the city MUCH MORESO if it were smaller/less traffic - given how otherwise liveable it is.

There is a river aroud the city's old center, which is just like a lady wearing the necklace. The Chengdu people call it mother river and along the riverside you can enjoy Chengdu's fantastic night life - different styles of bars 、 restaurants、KTVs、shopping malls , all you can imagine

All high-tech roads leading to Chengdu

November 27, 2012
Ambrose Evans-Pritchard

The big names in technology are beating a path to western China.

http://images.theage.com.au/2012/11/26/3830730/china-620x349.jpg
Illustation: Rocco Fazzari.

By the end of this year a fifth of all computers in the world will be manufactured in Chengdu, the ancient Sichuan capital of western China. The great leap forward has come with lightning speed and spans the gamut of high-tech industry. The three state-telecom giants - China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom - are together spending $US47 billion ($45 billion) to create the world's largest cloud-computing base at the city's Tianfu software park.

Country cousins they are not in Chengdu. There is no reason why they should be. The city competes with Rome for primacy as the world's oldest metropolis (Baghdad is not quite the same as Babylon), and competes with Tuscany for food.

Foreign critics have clung too long to the 1990s narrative of a booming eastern Chinese seaboard - Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai, Shenzhen and Guangzhou, some 300 million people deep - backed by a vast hinterland of ignorance and poverty.

It was never so, and is wrong today as the great boom rotates west. Chengdu has been an aerospace centre since the 1950s, strategically located in the Sichuan Basin behind a ring of escarpments - including the 7620-metre peaks of the Great Snowy Mountains, many of them unclimbed to this day.

The 14 million-strong city is now pole-vaulting up the technology ladder. Chengdu Aircraft Corp manufactures China's stealth fighter, the J-20 Black Eagle. Washington and Moscow were stunned when it took to the skies in 2010. More prosaically, its aerospace industry builds nose cones for Airbus and the rudder for Boeing's 787 Dreamliner.

The author looks like been subjected by some unknown stimuli ... he use these word:great, leap forward, lightning speed, world's oldest, booming, stunned...

"Foreign critics have clung too long ....."
Some foreign media are always particularly concerned about China, always take the initiative to give China a variety of evaluation and criticism.
Sometimes too much or "especially appreciated", more often slandered or ridiculed.

It is like you walk on the street, a man always track your and loudly talking to you,、“Your cloths is beautiful today.”"Your clothes is ugly today.""Your hat is so funny today" "Look at here (Talk to another), he wear a ugly shose today."

It is like a fly.

I hope they will not be so active focus on another country and forgot to care about their own. Actually I never see Chinese media have this habit.

Hi-tech expansion drives China's second boom in the hinterland
By the end of this year a fifth of all computers in the world will be manufactured in Chengdu, the ancient Sichuan capital of western China.

It is, that's why there are not supertall in CD. The 2008 earthquake caused a great loss in CD.

Perhaps, but I also think the open flat landscape has something to do with it. The geography of cities like Hong Kong and Chongqing tells them to build tall. The geography or Chengdu does not. It is like in Beijing. And Beijing doesn't have any supertalls either as far as I know.
And even if there had been a new earthquake, and there had also been a 400m skyscraper in Chengdu, I do believe there are construction techniques to make it safe. At least up to 8 or even 9 on the scale. However, "stabilizers" do take up space. So the higher you build, the more floors are used for stabilizing the structure, making it even less economical to build that high. Personally I prefer it when you have 100 buildings of 200 meters over having 10 buildings of 300 meters. It gives you much more a feeling of being in a big metropolis. Cities with 1 tower far above the rest looks ugly in most cases. Unfortunately.

But London is a big metropolis isn't it?
