TZBoy December 12th, 2011, 08:59 AM I agree, I really hope it works out for the airline this time around. TZBoy February 16th, 2012, 11:15 AM Dar es Salaam. Minister for Transport Omary Nundu has urged the National carrier, Air Tanzania Company Limited (ATCL), to cultivate business acumen practices among its staff to enable it drive its profitability and cash flow. Speaking during a 45-minutes programme aired by a local television on Monday, the minister noted that the move would help the company regain its control over the aviation business in the country and edge its place regionally. “It’s crucial that ATCL cultivates business acumen attitude among its staff in order to maximise economic benefits for a comprehensive understanding of what drives productivity and flow of money, key performance measures as well as market environment to help it deliver,” he said in Dar es Salaam. According to him, there was no justification in its continued dependence on government subsidies to carry out its basic operations, adding that as a business entity it must adhere to the principles of doing business including cultivating relations with banks and other financial institutions. In the last budget, the government set aside a total of Sh16.7 billion to enable ATCL resume operations. Mr Nundu stated that the government had already provided over Sh5 billion, and that more would be given in instalments to strengthen the firm. In September last year, ATCL resumed operations in two regions of Tabora and Kigoma after meeting the requirements. However, the minister expressed optimism that the company had a bright future provided it adhered to the basic principles of running as a business. “I’m really geared by the experiences of SAA and Ethiopian Airlines development. I believe ATCL can take a leaf from them, including seeking partnerships with them,” he added. He pointed out that this should go simultaneously with the expansion and improvement programmes. Its kinda sad when considering Precision airways is doing far better than them, I think the final solution should be to privatise it wholly. The govt seems not to care about aviation at all, Dar Intl Airport still sucks, when u go to reviews the best you can see is a 2/10 and people saying the only good thing is "you have to look beyond the airport, its one of the most beautiful countries in the world and very nice people" AND many saying the small airports upcountry are far better than Dar Airport. I was somehow disappointed in that statement because of the irony that nice people offer an atrocious airport to its visitors. Speaking shortly after the arrival of the 108-seater plane leased from Aero Vista Dubai, Chizi said ATCL will resume flights in a week’s time, hinting at the possibility of linking Dar es Salaam to Dubai during the next three months. “Tanzanians should expect the best services that they have missed for some time. This time we expect to give timely but affordable services,” he said. Chizi said the company will enter into joint ventures with international flight carriers in a bid to expand its footprint, stressing that the initiative will be on a win-win situation. “Through such partnerships, we will ensure there is a win-win situation. Where a company doesn’t benefit such partnership doesn’t last,” he said. He added that the company’s plane undergoing repairs at Terminal One will be ready in the next six weeks and will help boost the company’s service delivery. The leased plane has already been inspected by a team of experts from the Tanzania Civil Aviation Authority (TCAA) in Cairo, Egypt and a certificate granted for the plane to operate in the country. ATCL recently launched a website in order to improve customer service delivery as well as boost the national flag carrier’s efficiency. The website enables customers to make bookings without going through ATCL offices or agents and enables customers to air their views through social networks. The ATCL CEO told reporters a few that acquisition of the plane was a short-term plan to enhance the firm’s service delivery, adding that the airline has a long-term plan that will be implemented accordingly. bantugbro May 15th, 2012, 12:50 PM If we only get South africa and Egypt air to join this then we would be a perfect combination or all major african airlines so we battle with the European strict air laws 1000++ bantugbro May 15th, 2012, 12:51 PM http://a3.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/556072_262667250498395_170972529667868_472425_1027488559_n.jpg Lets hope this one will work ^^ bnr_888 May 19th, 2012, 02:44 PM I saw the pics they uploaded for their maiden journey to Mwanza and Kilimanjaro on their facebook page, it looks promising...seems like they are on the right track https://www.facebook.com/#!/airtanzania kiligoland May 20th, 2012, 05:56 PM http://i1213.photobucket.com/albums/cc475/xiaohan1/ATCL5.jpg tanzan May 21st, 2012, 09:25 AM I saw the pics they uploaded for their maiden journey to Mwanza and Kilimanjaro on their facebook page, it looks promising...seems like they are on the right track https://www.facebook.com/#!/airtanzania Yeah!...the biggest asset ATC has is it's huge patriot clients that no matter what they will support their national carrier. With the same fleet number as Precision, there would definitely be good competition. Yes, I know this happened back in 2007, but the effects are still being felt today! Tanzania: Botched Plane Deal Costs 100 Billion/- BY CHABY BARASA, 18 APRIL 2012 Comment Dodoma — THE government will have to cough up over 100bn/- to offset a debt incurred by Air Tanzania Corporation Limited (ATCL) resulting from the troubled national carrier's move to hire an airbus from a Lebanese company in 2007. A Parastatal Organisations Accounts Committee report tabled in the National Assembly in Dodoma on Tuesday said the amount combines interest and a 60,000,000 US dollar-guarantee provided by the government. "It is obvious the government will have to pay the amount as guarantor of the loan taken by ATCL, which is currently in dire financial situation," reads the report signed by its chairperson, Mr Zitto Kabwe (Kigoma South-Chadema). The said debt was quoted as of June 30, 2011. The committee called upon the government to take stern disciplinary measures against what it termed as irresponsible ATCL officials who abused their powers deliberately and caused the nation such massive loss. The said plane, hired from Wallis Trading, arrived in the country in May 2008 but after operating for just six months it had to undergo major maintenance in France, where it is still being held after ATCL failed to clear 3,009,495 US dollar costs for the same. The report further uncovered that while the Treasury Registrar issued the guarantee on April 2, 2008, the company had already struck the deal with the Lebanese company in October 2007 contrary to the opinion of experts who had opposed the move. What's not mentioned in the article is that ATC didn't have enough pilots to fly the Airbus plane and nearly zero qualified Airbus engineers & mechanics. That plane spent nearly 90% of ATCL ownership grounded and the taxpayers paid full amount while it was in service as it was grounded! It's no wonder kenya Airways withdrew it's offer to buy into Air Tanzania when it was placed up for sale. Too many bureaucrats were trying to skim off the profits while the airline was trying to restructure it's debts when SAA bought part of it. SAA blamed (officially) lack of passenger traffic for it's collaborative demise, but it's common knowledge that the government's influence spelled it's demise. It's a good thing that Kenya Airways decided to buy 49% into Precision Air and turned it into TZ's best serving airline. Imagine that! kiligoland June 3rd, 2012, 02:47 PM ylxVi_x8nF8 tanzan June 4th, 2012, 11:54 AM Mkwere nae keshapoteza uaminifu siku hizi...^^ labda hawa jamaa wanahisa na pw ndomana ATC inakwamishwa kila wakati tanzan June 6th, 2012, 09:17 AM By Mkinga Mkinga The Citizen Reporter Dar es Salaam. Barely a month after taking office as the minister for Transport, Dr Harrison Mwakyembe has sacked Air Tanzania’s acting director-general Paul Chizi. He was replaced by Captain Lusajo Lazaro, who will hold the fort in an acting capacity. Captain Lusajo was formerly the director of operations at the airline. Mr Chizi was appointed to the managerial position in August last year. The sacking order drew immediate praise from the deputy chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Public Organisations Accounts (POAC), Mr Deo Filikunjombe, who declared it a sign that the minister was serious about tackling the airline’s problems. Dr Mwakyembe also suspended four other directors of the national carrier, among them acting director of engineering John Ringo. Also sent home were Mr Amin Mziray of the legal department, acting director of finance Justus Bashara and acting director of business Josephat Kagirwa. A statement signed by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Transport, Mr Omar Chambo, said the changes would take effect immediately. According to the PS, the five violated the Public Service Act and public service procedures. The statement reads: “Through Act No 8 of 2002 and Public Service Principle No 17(4) of 2003, the minister for Transport has revoked the appointment of the acting ATCL director-general with effect from 5 June.” The other four directors were suspended on the grounds that their services had threatened the survival of a public entity. Dr Mwakyembe will now form a committee of three to investigate how the money released by the government in May this year has been spent. Members of the committee will be required to have legal and financial experience. Mr Chizi, who served the firm for 10 months, was not available for comment. In their just-concluded session in Dodoma, MPs objected to what they described as the constant need to bail out ATCL and also having to pay for “irresponsible” decisions made by top management. The politicians were particularly angry about liabilities incurred through guarantees given by the government in connection with aircraft deals. The airline is in the financial doldrums and has no plane to its name. Reportedly against the advice of experts and opposition within the airline itself, ATCL entered into a lease agreement for an A320 on the strength of a government guarantee.Dr Mwakyembe’s move was an instant hit with Mr Filikunjombe, who congratulated the minister for Transport for listening to MPs. He added: “It’s a good start for Dr Mwakyembe. He seems to be serious about reviving the national carrier…this will have an impact on civil servants who have been thinking they are above everything.” It was a mistake, Mr Filikunjombe said, to appoint the outgoing Air Tanzania Company Limited acting director-general, who once served as managing director of the defunct Community Airline, and it was important that a competent team be appointed now if ATCL was to be rescued. The outspoken CCM cadre wants the new management to link up with international airlines and boost the tourism industry. http://thecitizen.co.tz/component/content/article/37-tanzania-top-news-story/22936-atcl-boss-sacked-four-top-officials-suspended.html kiligoland June 6th, 2012, 12:45 PM wow, chizi pia ni fisadi! tanzan June 6th, 2012, 01:37 PM wow, chizi pia ni fisadi! there will be investigation but other directors ndo wanaojulikana wazi wazi mafisadi sabotaging ATCL. Rain Drops March 14th, 2013, 07:08 PM IN a bid to improve provision of information on flights schedules and other related issues at major airports in the country, the Tanzania Civil Aviation Authority (TCAA) will soon introduce a new digital method. The new method will send the information using ATS Message Handling System (AMHS) to cut down on time and human costs that were deployed using analogue system of Aeronautical Fixed Telecommunication Network (AFTN). According to TCAA Director General, Mr Fadhili Manongi, the AMHS system will enable stakeholders to easily get information without visiting those centres at airports. The project, he said, expected to begin before the end of this fiscal year-2012/2013. The AMHS also known as Aeronautical Message Handling System assists in collecting aeronautical ground to ground communications such as the transmission of flight plans or meteorological data. Mr Manongi was giving a briefing in Dar es Salaam to a delegation from Communications and Transport Committee of the House of Representatives of Zanzibar. The committee paid a one-day visit to TCAA headquarters to learn various issues and exchange views on how to bring about development in aviation industry. "This sector plays a great role to the country and is very important, facilitating tourism and other sectors that contribute significantly to the economy," said TCAA boss. Mr Manongi said aviation security especially at airports continue to improve through regulation and regular inspections in planes. The DG noted that authorities responsible for aviation safety have been changing their systems according to changes happening worldwide. Julius Nyerere International Airport (JNIA), Kilimanjaro International Airport (KIA) and Abeid Aman Karume International Airport (AAKIA) continue fulfilling requirements for international airports status by receiving international flights. One of the criteria is the construction of a fence around those airports in order to tighten security. The representatives thanked TCAA management for the good work they have been doing and that they will continue to cooperate for the growth of the aviation industry and the country in general. The Chairperson of the Communications and Transport Committee of the House of Representatives, Mr Makame Mshimba Mbaruk, said that they will convince the government in the Isles to buy state-of-the-art equipment in order to improve security at airports http://allafrica.com/stories/201303140145.html Rain Drops March 27th, 2013, 06:44 PM THE number of passengers ferried by the Fastjet Tanzania since it started operations in Tanzania some five months ago, reached 84,716 at the end of February 2013, up from 58,329 registered in the previous month, a sign of the mounting demand for the low cost reliable air carrier. According to a press statement on Fastjet February statistics, the number of passengers for the month of February was 26,387, compared to 26,414 jetted in January 2013. "The number of passengers as a percentage of the available seats flown increased to 81 per cent in the month under review compared to only 66 per cent in the preceding period," it was stated in the statement. Commenting on the February statistics, Fastjet Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Ed Winter said; "Fastjet achieved 81 per cent load factor in February which clearly demonstrates continuing high demand for low cost reliable air travel in Africa." In response to this demand, Fastjet is increasing its capacity by 50 per cent and launching two more domestic routes in Tanzania. From Monday this week, Fastjet started to operate daily flights between Kilimanjaro and Zanzibar and Kilimanjaro and Mwanza. "Fastjet's excellent levels of punctuality and reliability continued through February, with 99.7 per cent of flights arriving within 15 minutes of schedule, an average arrival delay of just 7 minutes, and no cancellations," remarked Mr Winter. Having established its reputation for total reliability on Tanzanian domestic routes, the company is expecting soon to be looking to offer flights to international destinations such as Johannesburg and Entebbe. http://allafrica.com/stories/201303260118.html Rain Drops March 28th, 2013, 07:03 PM Credit and debit card payment solution using Visa and MasterCard - FASTJET has introduced its credit and debit card payment solution using Visa and MasterCard and expect to increase sales by 15 per cent, though mostly from overseas bookings. The airline understands that the credit and debit cards usage is not high in East Africa, with less than 10 per cent of the population in the region having cards, but launched the solution ahead of demand on this market. FastJet Chief Commercial Officer Mr Richard Bodin said they have partnered with Wirecard AG to use their international footprint to avail the opportunity of transacting globally where card payment solutions prevails. 'We have been inundated with requests from outside Africa for people looking to purchase seats on the FastJet website, andÉ we are now in the position to be able to facilitate these bookings,' Mr Bodin said in a statement yesterday. The deal allows consumers and travel agents from across the globe the ability to access and pay for seats of the rapidly growing airline. The solution that accepts Visa and MasterCard holders was launched and is available on the airline's website Mr Bodin added: 'This coupled with our hugely popular Mobile Money payment facility really means that our customer base has the full suite of payment processes available to them.' FastJet expects up to 15 per cent of future bookings to be made using credit and debit cards with Mobile Money payments already accounting for as much as 25 per cent of sales. Wirecard Executive Vice- President Travel and Transportation Jorg Moller said Africa is a very interesting market as 'our strength and competence' in international payment and risk management solutions are especially valuable here. 'Our solutions help airlines to operate their business more efficiently and at low risk,' Moller said. Wirecard AG (until April 2005: InfoGenie AG) is a global financial services and technology company headquartered in Aschheim, Munich, Germany.
