View Full Version : cheap place to stay in Manhattan
algonquin October 29th, 2004, 03:22 AM hey there Yanks
I'm planning a trip to NYC some time in December. Can anyone recommend a cheap hotel/hostel to stay at, somewhere midtown? Parking's a plus, but I know thats asking for a lot in Manhattan. I'll be with my fiance, so it can't be a complete dive!
thanks
3tmk October 29th, 2004, 03:45 AM in December? well you better hurry up, I don't think there will be a lot of good spots left soon. ;)
as for Hotels, I have no idea, there is a Marriot on Times Square but I don't know their price range
Dennis October 29th, 2004, 05:30 PM Hotel carter, near times square. it stinks but hey, its cheap!
swivel October 29th, 2004, 08:43 PM 3tmk is right...you'd better hurry... I looked for a place about a month ago for this same time frame, and it didn't look all that great... good luck
lokinyc November 4th, 2004, 04:56 PM It's cheap, cheap, cheap and because it's on the far West Side, there's parking. Rather unfriendly service though.

TomK November 7th, 2004, 03:02 PM I have stayed in a private double room at the Vanderbilt YMCA several times, and have been happy, especially considering price and location. In mid-town, between the UN and Rockefeller Center. Only have one pic, taken from one of the windows (the closest buildings look a bit bad perhaps, but street was nice and clean, with Kinkos, Subway and some delis just outside).

24gotham November 7th, 2004, 03:51 PM Parking? Good luck... Only visitors would think about parking in Manhattan. If your'e thinking you need a rental car when you visit NYC, think again, it is completely unrealistic in Manhattan, and the cost of parking could be as much as a quarter of what you pay for a hotel room, and quite possibly several blocks away.

yloria.com (said its for college students, but I have stayed there)
Skyscrapercitizen November 9th, 2004, 01:30 PM WTF, most hotels posted are not cheap IMO....
Skyscrapercitizen November 9th, 2004, 01:46 PM Have a look at the youth hostels in NYC. (google) You can stay in one of the many youth hostel for about $30/night, including breakfast and no curfew. So that is what I'll do in February.

I'm well aware of the parking situation in Manhattan, I've been there before.
I don't need a rental, I was planning to drive to New York. It's cheaper than taking the bus, train, or a flight.
Thanks for the input everyone.... Hotel 31 seems like a good choice. I've noticed alot of hostels offer 10 bed rooms.... no good for bringing my other half.
Maybe I'll just stay somewhere thats communting distance and take the train.. whats Yonkers like?
algonquin November 22nd, 2004, 09:17 PM I have a friend who was just in NYC... he stayed at the holland motor lodge hotel in Jersey City, right at the entrance of the Holland Tunnel... said it was alright. It's not Manhattan, but its close enough.
Edmundo November 22nd, 2004, 11:03 PM I recommend Hotel 31. I stayed twice there and it does the trick. Rooms are minimal and most apartments have shared bath, but at least it is clean, cheap (for NY standards, mind you) and the location is very good.
