This question might never have been asked before Chris Paul signed with the Clippers but it's something to think about. We all know the Lakers are perennial contenders for the NBA Championship but they are in rebuilding mode right now. They'll most likely make the playoffs but I honestly don't think they'll win the championship. Nothing at all wrong with that.
But the Clippers are doing something they have never done: Starting to become relevant in the NBA. They have, since pretty much for as long as anyone can remember, sucked. When people think of bad basketball teams, they think of the Clippers. But I think the Clippers are on their way up.
Now comes the interesting thing: If the Lakers and Clippers were to meet in the Western Conference Finals, I think it'll rank as one of the biggest sporting events in LA history. Right up there with the Olympics. It'll tear this city apart but in a good way. The amount of coverage it'll receive by the local media, as well as sports and probably US media like CNN and all of that would be mind blowing. There would obviously be Clipper bandwagon fans but I don't think I would mind. Remember when they made the playoffs in 2006 and were THIS close to beating the Suns? Hollywood would shit a brick. There would be all sorts of Laker/Clipper parties. People would be designing clothes left and right. It would be a huge moment in LA that's for sure.
