Some people like me ( who don't visit other city threads ) can use this for local arattai issues and we also can't expect people from other cities to comment on local CBE infra issues. In that case I feel this is a better option chennaidesi December 22nd, 2011, 08:04 PM No wrong approach. It is better other people know your issues even if they like it or not is different. Someone know about that problem can give solution to your issue. Leo_r December 22nd, 2011, 08:15 PM I thought it is an exclusive thread for Kongutamizhan. The city now has a new tattoo parlour. "The best part of Coimbatore is that 90% customers come in knowing what they want," says Krishnan Vaidyanathan, who runs the studio. The parlour is known as 'Irezumi', meaning an ink mark on the skin in Japanese. Actors like Khushboo, Trisha and Vikram have been tattooed at the parlour's Chennai wing. Many fashion models are also regulars. The studio has professionals certified in Thailand. The studio's first customer was an officer from the defence services. The parlour sees customers between the age group of 14 and 62. "We do not tattoo kids below the age of 18 unless they are accompanied by a parent," says Krishnan. kongutamizhan December 31st, 2011, 04:45 PM Wishing you all a happy and prosperous 2012. ஆளும்கட்சி கவுன்சிலர்களை, இவர்கள் மதிக்காமல் இருப்பதற்கு இதுவும் ஒரு முக்கியக் காரணம். kongutamizhan January 3rd, 2012, 05:19 PM This article explains pathetic state of kinathukidavu library http://www.dinamalar.com/district_detail.asp?id=378417 சுற்றுச்சுவர் இல்லாத நூலகம் கிணத்துக்கடவு : கிணத்துக்கடவு கிளை நூலகத்திற்கு சுற்றுச்சுவர் இல்லாததால், பொது சுகாதார சீர்கேடு ஏற்பட்டுள்ளது. இதற்கு கோவை மாவட்ட நூலக ஆணைக்குழு நடவடிக்கை எடுக்க வேண்டும் என வாசகர்கள் எதிர்பார்க்கின்றனர். kongutamizhan January 6th, 2012, 06:11 PM http://www.deccanchronicle.com/tabloid/all-rounders/waiter-proves-be-inspiration-385 A waiter proves to be an inspiration Palpandi, a traffic warden volunteer in the city of Coimbatore, left his home in Madurai in 1996 in search of employment that would enable him to earn enough to care for his family. The only job he could find was that of a waiter. In addition to working as a waiter in the idli restaurant he helped traffic police with controlling the traffic, ensuring free flow of traffic in the absence of a traffic warden at certain junctions in the city. “When I came to Coimbatore, I found a restaurant called ‘Madurai Idly Hotel’ that was willing to hire me. They provided me with a room on the premises. I had a lot of free time as we worked in shifts, so I wanted to do something constructive with my free time. However, I wanted to use my time to do something constructive, where I could give back to society,” he said. Although volunteering his services as a traffic warden was not his first choice, says Palpandi. He would often watch the traffic officer across his restaurant streamline traffic in Gandhipuram, a very busy junction in the city, watching the kids waving at him, the people moving to his will, all fascinated Palpandi. Paul Raj an inspector encouraged him, even getting him a hand held traffic light to help him with his work. “I stitched myself two khaki uniforms, which cost me around Rs 3000 from my own savings. My happiest moment, being a volunteer, came when I was awarded a certificate for my contribution to society by the former Commissioner of Coimbatore, C. Contract agency The civic body will conduct the survey in association with the contract agency, Tata Consultancy Services, in the next couple of weeks, says T.K. Ponnusamy, Commissioner. The civic body has chosen four wards each in each of the old four zones for the survey. A Corporation employee, probably bill collector, along with a trained TCS nominee will conduct door-to-door survey of residential and commercial buildings and industrial establishments in the wards to assess the area, gather owners' details and other property-tax related information. Vacant land details They will also collect vacant land details. Mr. Ponnusamy says that the Corporation has finalised the form for data collection after carrying out a sample survey in a ward. Even as the teams go about collecting data, they will also hand over self-assessment forms in English and Tamil to the owners for voluntary disclosure of details. At the end of the data-collection drive, the Corporation will compare the details. A 10 – 15 per cent deviation in the area is allowed. Wherever it is more, the Corporation's data will be accepted after verification. Difference And if the difference between the data in self-assessment forms and the ones the Corporation and TCS has collected is not wide, the Corporation will accept the same. After collating the data for all the 16 wards and observing the difference the Corporation will think about scaling up the operations for the 100 wards. Revenue The Corporation initiated the GIS project more than two years ago as part of the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission scheme to improve revenue and plan infrastructure development projects. Then it had tied up with TCS. Erroneous But soon the project ran into rough weather after the data collected was found erroneous. “Data in only one of the 2,300 assessment forms was accurate,” the Commissioner says. Once the Corporation scales up the operations, it will provide unique identification number for the owners of properties in Coimbatore for tax payment. The owners can also use the number to establish their rightful ownership of the property. kongutamizhan January 8th, 2012, 05:57 AM http://www.dinamalar.com/district_detail.asp?id=381411 A good collector gone. But who cares about the skeletal man in rags lying by the ditch? P.Mahendiran does. Mahendiran, also known as Magi, sits next to the man and strikes up a conversation. He cleans him up, gets him something to eat and takes him to a rehabilitation home. He wouldn't stop with that. He would also try to locate the man's family and reunite them. Since 2009, Magi has reunited 11 mentally-disturbed people with their families — one of them is even getting married this year. The soft-spoken Mahendiran wishes there were no orphanages in the world. “If there are ailing elders or mentally-ill members in our family, we should take the responsibility of taking care of them,” he says. “Coimbatore has a lot of kind-hearted doctors who are willing to treat the mentally-unstable for a minimal fee.” Along with his friends Thaba Suraj, Mohanasundaram, Shenbagam, Parimalam, Balachandran and Palaniappan, the 35-year-old has changed the lives of many. He shares some of his success stories. Palani alias Pattan Palani must've been in his mid-30s. He was found wandering in the grounds near a college. Some students called me for assistance. When I first saw him, his hair was matted, and he was covered in dirt. We gave him a hair-cut and bathed him — he looked like a maappilai! He was in a disturbed state of mind. All we gathered was that he was from a village called Nambiyur and that his father was a dealer of groundnuts. We set out to trace his family. We spent an entire day in the village, asking everyone, “Do you know Palani?” but to no avail. It then struck us. Palani kept mumbling ‘Pattan, Pattan'. Was that his nickname? Fingers crossed, we asked a villager, “Do you know Pattan?” He led us to an old man. We were shocked to see him — he was a spitting image of our Palani! He believed his son was dead. We convinced him otherwise and brought him to Coimbatore. The minute he saw Palani, the old man didn't say a word. But his eyes filled with tears as he held Palani close. Avanashi paati She was a familiar face in the area. She slept on the platform and lived on tea and buns bought by kind-hearted passers-by. I saw her when I was travelling in a bus via Avanashi. I found out that she had a sister in Erode and took her there. I told her that all what paati needed was a bed and some food. She agreed to take her in after a little coaxing. It's been a month since I left paati there — she's happy now. Shanmugam thatha It was my four-year-old daughter who first noticed him lying near a gutter in Ganapathy. Shanmugam thatha was in a very bad shape. I took him to a rehabilitation home. All he would mutter was ‘Kallarai veedhi'. I asked around and found that it was in Sowripalayam. I clicked a photo of Shanmugam thatha and headed there. I went door-to-door showing people the photograph. At last, a lady recognised him — she was his daughter-in-law. She said that he had been missing for days. We thus reunited Shanmugam thatha with his family. Asokan I met Asokan during a routine visit to Anbalayam. He mentioned he was from a village near Mannargudi. With the help of friends, I traced his brother's phone number. He said Asokan had been missing for 18 years. Assuming he was dead, they had even planned to apply for a death certificate for him. He was surprised to hear that his brother was still alive. Asokan is now with his family — he is getting married. Pose this question to the Ward's residents. Without second thoughts their answer will be uniform: that the civic body has ignored the facility, shirked its responsibility of maintaining the lights there, let shrubs grow and reptiles invade the place. The result: visitors' movement remains curtailed. Resident M. Balasubramaniam takes his son to the park but restricts his movement. “I ensure that he is not far away from me, does not venture beyond the small play area. For, snakes and reptiles take over the park in the evenings.” The play area he is talking about is two sand-filled rectangles with swings, slide and half-a-dozen pews on both sides of the main entrance. Other than the play area, the park has a walkway that runs along the periphery on the inside of the one-and-half acre plot. The other reason that Mr. Balasubramaniam, a regular to the park, does not let his child venture out is the absence of lights. He says that how many lights glow is a subject matter of probability. Resident S. Muniraj has a similar complaint. Walkers in the mornings also face threat from the reptiles, which have a free access to the park from the neighbouring reserved site that is full of bushes. “A couple of days ago the residents had to run for safety, thanks to snakes.” Ward 62 Councillor S. Balan says that reserve site-turned park has remained in such a state of neglect since the Corporation spent Rs. 25 lakh towards construction of a compound in 2010. Mere construction of a compound will not turn it into a park, he says and wants the civic body to develop the place in a manner that befits the description of park. The Corporation should plant ornamental plants, saplings of trees, provide fountains and more play equipment for children. It should also landscape the entire one-and-half acre, say the two residents. Mr. Balan says he has raised the issue in the Council meeting and the Mayor has promised to look into the issue. Sources in the civic body say that following instructions, they have ordered conservancy workers to clear the bush at the earliest. kongutamizhan February 5th, 2012, 11:25 PM ^^ Another instance of how public money is wasted http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/coimbatore/Stink-over-corporation-plan-for-new-toilets-as-old-ones-remain-unused/articleshow/11772199.cms Stink over corporation plan for new toilets as old ones remain unused:bash: COIMBATORE: While the city corporation is all set to embark on a total sanitation scheme with the construction of toilets in key areas in town, there are several portable toilets that have just been dumped near the main garbage yard, damaged and unattended. These toilets were bought using public money during the World Tamil Classical Conference. This newspaper had previously reported about the portable toilets being dumped at the Vellalore dumping yard a few months ago. Consequently, the corporation installed a few of these toilets in select locations. However, many toilets still remain unused and rusting. Residents feel that the corporation must put the mobile toilets to use before constructing new ones. The toilets were purchased in five categories. Eight grade I toilets were purchased for VIPs and delegates. Each toilet cost Rs 9,19,800, amounting to a total cost of Rs 73,58,400 [WTF??]. Ten grade II toilets were purchased at Rs 6,36,600 each for a total cost of Rs 63,66,000. Ten grade III toilets were purchased costing Rs 6,35,600 each at a total estimated cost of Rs 63,56,000. Twelve grade IV toilets were purchased for Rs 5,48,800 each at a total cost of Rs 65,85,600. Twenty grade V toilets were purchased at Rs 3,21,600 each, at a total cost of Rs 64,32,000. The corporation has sent a proposal for the new sanitation scheme to the commissioner for municipal administration for approval. The purpose of the new scheme is to curb open defecation in urban areas. Field exercises have been done in all 100 wards to identify areas that require toilets, with the help of their health wing staff. Out of the 104 identified places that require toilets, the corporation has short listed 69 locations based on various factors, said a senior corporation official. With the expansion of corporation limits, there are many areas that require public toilets, added the official. When questioned about the unused portable toilets, he said a few have been installed in the city, while the rest would be rented out for events. While he appreciated the corporation's efforts to build more toilets, K Kathimathiyon, Secretary of Coimbatore Consumer Cause, said that it had the responsibility to maintain and operate these toilets efficiently. "It is unfortunate that so much public money has gone to waste," he said. Tourists generally judge a city by its infrastructure, and if the toilets are poorly maintained, it will reflect badly on the city and its administration, he added. Rajendran, who works at the farmer's market in R S Puram, said that even though the corporation had installed toilets in the area, they remain closed. Thus, people continue to attend the call of nature in public. K Ravi Kumar, a resident of Puliyakulam, said that the corporation had installed two toilets near the existing ones. These toilets remain closed most of the time, he added. When contacted, corporation commissioner T K Ponnusamy said that 21 portable toilets have been installed at various locations and he has not received any complaints regarding their maintenance. While 10 units have been sent to Cuddalore which was hit by cyclone Thane, 20 units are for sale. About the new sanitation scheme he revealed that the corporation has proposed to build 68 toilets in the newly added areas at a cost of Rs 8 crore, for which they await government approval. kongutamizhan February 7th, 2012, 02:27 AM Innuma idhukku innum machine use panna aaramikkala?:ohno: http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/coimbatore/33-year-old-sanitary-worker-dies-of-asphyxiation/articleshow/11772349.cms karthikarthik February 7th, 2012, 06:01 AM Innuma idhukku innum machine use panna aaramikkala?:ohno: http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/coimbatore/33-year-old-sanitary-worker-dies-of-asphyxiation/articleshow/11772349.cms I felt really bad for these kind of deaths. The need for such an authority is more urgent now as the city has expanded considerably. The long pending demand for a Coimbatore Development Authority still remains only on paper. Agencies representing both trade and industry blame the inability of the city to attract large-scale industrial investment in recent years, for the absence of such an authority. "Those trying to invest here are discouraged by the delays in approvals and lack of adequate facilities. Such an authority will ensure planned growth of Coimbatore and its surroundings,'' says M Krishnan, president of Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Coimbatore. "Investors would have to look at Coimbatore when Chennai becomes saturated with growth. Several industries were reluctant to invest in Coimbatore as their employees may not be able to find affordable housing, decent schools and entertainment options that match their expectations. Such development takes time. But we need to create a system that will facilitate this development," he said. According to Ravi Sam of CII, such an authority is inevitable as it would substantially reduce the time taken to grant building plan approvals. "With faster approvals, development would also be on a fast track," he says. Agencies have already urged the government to include it in the Twelfth Five Year Plan. "It has been a long pending demand of the people," said R R Balasundram, vice president of the Chamber. However with limited resources and power entrusted with the local planning authority that is short-staffed, the execution of proposed plans has taken a back-seat, he says. "The plan to have such a government body was recommended by Justice Mohan Committee. When you look at the sustainable growth that Chennai has achieved, the role of the CMDA has been commendable," says K Kathirmathiyon, secretary, Coimbatore Consumer Cause. "The corporation cannot handle the challenges posed by rapid expansion by itself," said M Kandhaswami, president of Coimbatore District Small Industries Association. senthilnatha February 27th, 2012, 02:57 PM  http://tamil.oneindia.in/news/2012/02/27/tamilnadu-2-hour-power-cut-irks-chennaites-aid0091.html கொளுத்தும் வெயிலில் இருந்து குறைந்த செலவில் ஆசுவாசம் பெறுவது கடந்த கால வரலாறு ஆகி வருகிறது. prasadrad March 26th, 2012, 07:27 AM ^^ These tender coconut sellers are pukka cheats , they get the load at thro- away prices and sell it at exorbitant rates. The other way round http://www.thehindu.com/life-and-style/metroplus/article3254166.ece A.Ashok wants to set a Guinness World Record in reverse running I have seen him often in Race Course. The sight of a man running backwards in Race Course startled me one evening. Dusky, lean, and dressed in track pants and running shoes, he runs backwards! I can't resist stopping him to ask what makes him do this. and asking was there almost every day, doing this strange exercise! We met near the Pisa Tower (yes, there's one in Race Course) for a chat and This is what he had to say: “I jogged like everyone else, until a year-and-a-half. One evening, a stout friend and I were jogging together. He couldn't keep up with my speed and I ran backwards to egg him on. I had run only for a little while and suddenly felt dizzy. I felt I had no stamina to run further. That was strange. I'd always considered myself fit. Why did I feel so exhausted? Did it have something to do with running backwards? I searched the Internet for information and found that reverse running was extremely beneficial for the body, and I was hooked. My name is Ashok and I'm 30-years-old. I'm a driving instructor at GeeDee Driving Institute. I run four rounds backwards around Race Course every day. I can cover 10 km in 48 minutes. The current Guinness World Record for reverse running is held by a German who can run 10 km in about 40 minutes. I want to beat that. I'm practising hard to do so. It took me six months to perfect my running pattern. Since you're running backwards, and can't see what's behind you, your senses get more alert. The body heat of a person behind me, the rustle of a shirt, the tiniest sound and movement…I can sense them all. I glance backwards just once in a while when I run. I'm accustomed to it now and know the path quite well. Over the year, running backwards has brought about a lot of changes in me. First of all, my hair growth improved. My receding hairline disappeared! And injuries healed faster — a deep gash on my leg was cured in a week. Pain in my leg-joints disappeared too. I felt really good. I burned six times more calories than I did running the regular way. My body did whatever I asked of it. Reverse running is my life. I wake up in the morning thinking of it. Every thing I do during the day is aligned towards my evening running session. A guy running backwards keeps talking to me in my mind. He is my friend. When I'm alone, all I do is think of him. I don't know why I'm so fond of him, I just am. I will keep doing this for the rest of my life. Since I'm not all that well-to-do, it would be nice if I get some financial aid to attempt the Guinness Record. And I just wish people would stop taunting me. People who discourage me are more than those who say, ‘Come on, you can do it!' Young boys make fun of me. Once, a boy hurtled his car at me in full speed and veered inches away from me. It was his idea of teasing me. Some men mumble ‘This is a wrong form of exercise' as I pass them. But I don't care. I'm just going to keep running. You can lose a lot of weight through reverse running. Every time I see an obese person, I feel like walking up to him and teaching him this exercise. I'm ready to teach this to anybody free of cost. Anyone else who wants to run backwards?” Brand coimbatore April 1st, 2012, 07:49 AM Yendru pirakum vidivu kalam for these 2 issues--- 1) Poster culture is picking up rapidly in cbe ( I think it was less compared to mdu n chennai ) not sparring any medians in the city. It is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Coimbatore-based textile machinery major Lakshmi Machine Works Ltd. The company, situated in the Wujiang Economic Development Zone, in China's Jiangsu province, currently manufactures 35 machines a month. This will be expanded to 40 machines a month. Besides, it also plans to construct its own premises in the same zone. “The government authority has already allotted land for the proposed facility,” said Mr K. Soundhar Rajhan, Chairman, LMW Textile Machinery (Suzhou) Co Ltd. Growth opportunity According to him, the expansion project and the new (own) facility will cost a little over $6 million. “Of the budgeted $12.5 million, we have already invested close to 50 per cent. The remaining funds will be invested in these projects in two years,” he said. China offers great growth opportunity as the Chinese textile market is “simply huge” and most of the manufacturers are getting modernised periodically. “However,” he said, “competition from many European giants and the state-owned enterprises there is the biggest challenge for us. But we managed penetrate the market quite successfully”. The company posted a turnover of RMB 220 million last year. Mr R. Rajendran, Director (Finance), LMW Ltd, earlier said the order inflow has been good and the China venture was concentrating on localisation following price pressures. “We expect to break even, and even make a profit next fiscal,” he added. While the Chinese venture is only engaged in the making of ring frames at present, Mr Rajendran hinted that there were plans to add more products in the days to come. Lakshmi Machine Works Ltd reported a drop in net profit to Rs 39.65 crore for the quarter ended December 31, 2011 from Rs 46 crore in previous corresponding quarter. Ramanathan, one of the trustees, told The Hindu. At the goshala, the animals are periodically vaccinated and fed with sumptuous feed that include nutrient-rich cattle feed, vitamin tablets, rice bran and oil cakes. “It is sad that 17 lakh cows are still killed in our country every year even though the therapeutic value of products from cow including its milk, urine and dung are widely tapped in the preparation of medicines or used as farm manure,” pointed out Mr. Ramanathan, who is a textile businessman by profession. A postmortem on Saturday evening linked its death to a bad meal the big cat had a few hours before it went to retrieve the remains of a previous kill it left behind two days ago in the cowshed. The tiger, according to the postmortem report, had eaten a porcupine hours before attacking the cow. Quills of the porcupine had pierced the tiger's heart and intestine. The tiger breathed its last at around 8am on Saturday inside the cage where it was kept after given the tranquilizing shot late Friday evening, according to Manampallai forest ranger officer Arokiaraj Xavier. The medicines administered by veterinarian Dr N Kalaivanan, who had come from Mudumalai National Park in the Nilgiris on Friday evening to tranquilize the tiger, could not save the 10-year-old animal. The attack of the cow and the internal injuries it suffered after eating the porcupine had left the tiger weak. Throughout the day, the animal was confined to the cowshed of R Gnanasekaran, a resident of Periyar Nagar in Valparai. The absence of a vet with expertise in the use of tranquilizers locally had delayed officials from providing proper treatment to the animal. Forest officials did not dare to go anywhere near the injured animal to provide food, water or medicines fearing retaliation. The aged animal, officials, said could not fight off the fatigue and the injuries. At 1.30pm on Saturday, Kalaivanan returned to conduct the autopsy in the Manampally Forest Range Office premises in the presence of senior forest officials, World Wide Fund For Nature representatives Dr Ajay and Mohanraj and Valparai police inspector M Subramanian. The autopsy revealed that one of the legs of the tiger was damaged in the attack by the cow. Its nails were broken and blood stains found on the nail beds. There was a deep cut on the stomach which was caused by the sharp quills of the porcupine. There were numerous cysts in the intestine and the lungs too were damaged. Two quills had pierced its heart. According to Kalaivanan, the tiger would have hunted and eaten a porcupine before moving to Gnanasekaran's property. The tiger was cremated at a spot close to Meenparai on the way to Top Slip in the presence of a large crowd. Meanwhile, forest officials assured locals that they would take up the request to station a vet with expertise in tranquilizing animals in Anamalai Tiger Reserve, which includes the forests in and around Valparai. Residents of Valparai are prone to frequent attacks by elephants and leopards. During the worst period, the city suffered a 10-hour power cut daily. This has come down to about an hour daily. On some days there is no power cut at all. Relatively heavy summer rains and improved wind have increased power production consequently reducing the outages. For the past three days industries and residences have had continuous power supply. "It was a pleasant surprise to find that the authorities did not cut power in the last few days," said Ram Babu, a resident of Ramnathpuram. With the ten-hour power cuts, he said his daily schedule was completely affected. "I could never sleep well during the power outages. The children suffered because they were unable to study. Besides, the heat was unbearable. Thanks to the recent rains and strong wind, we have our life back again," he added. Industries are also thrilled about the minimal outages. "We were able to run the full shift for four days without any disruption in power supply," said J James, president, Tamil Nadu Association of Cottage and Tiny Enterprises. Industry had faced huge losses due to the frequent cuts and they are hoping to recover their losses now. However, there is no official announcement from the government regarding the reduction is outages, so it is hard to know what the real situation is, he said. When contacted K Kastoorirangian, Chairman, Indian Wind Power Association, said the winds have been strong during the last few days. On Saturday 110MW of power was produced, which improved to 1308MW on Sunday and as of Monday1580MW of energy was supplied to the grid. The power production is likely to increase in the coming days although it is unclear how much of the wind energy will be put to use. On Monday, officials asked the wind mill owners to remove their connection from the grid, as they claim there is excess power in the grid and they could not take anymore wind energy. However, if the power cuts and holidays are done away with, they can easily evacuate the power and wind energy could be further utilized. Chief Engineer, A Thangavelu, Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation, TANGEDCO, said that the power generation has improved in the last three days thanks to the rain and wind energy, which helped to improve the situation. He said due to rain the power utilised for agriculture has reduced drastically. deepu051993 May 2nd, 2012, 04:23 PM ^^yirunthalum unga lolukku ore fullstope yillama poyitirukku:) kongutamizhan May 3rd, 2012, 03:07 AM http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/coimbatore/Retailers-against-integration-with-wholesale-market/articleshow/12958345.cms Retailers against integration with wholesale market COIMBATORE: Retail traders at Anna Market in Saibaba Colony approached the district collector requesting his intervention to abandon the corporation budget's proposal to construct a joint market for the wholesale and retail traders together at Mettupalayam Road. "The wholesalers must be asked to locate outside the city. The proposal if implemented will take away our business, and create heavy traffic in the city," said KK Kuttan, a retailer. The corporation had in the recent budget said that they would build a combined market for both retailers and wholesalers at Mettupalayam Road. However, the wholesale business, if combined with retail will create problems in the city. "Around 500 to 600 vehicles with vegetables and stationery items will ply through the city, from 4am to 4pm. This would create traffic congestion," said CRC Narayanan, another retail trader. The retailers claim they will petition the corporation mayor, councillors, and even the Chief Minister to scrap the proposal put forward during corporation budget. The retailers say that though the corporation takes rent from them they are not provided with electricity and water connections. "We get water from roadside pipes. We get power from a private supplier through a generator," said Narayanan. They want to enter only Indian Administrative Service (IAS). The centre saw 22 going for the main examination. Out of the 10 who cleared the mains, five cleared the final interview, which, according to them, is an achievement. C. Sudhagaran (Rank 728), a resident of Veeraganur, a panchayat 75 km from Salem, who has cleared the Civil Services in his very first attempt, is a happy man. Though he began his coaching in 2009 after completing engineering, his hard work and determination saw him succeed in the first attempt. “I got inspired reading about the work of many IAS officers during my final year, and that got me motivated to attempt the examinations. Though I will make another attempt to better my rank, in the meantime I will join the Audit and Accounts Service. This is also another Government service, so I don't mind,” he says positively. Aware of his shortcomings in his earlier attempt, he is keen to overcome them and improve upon his strengths. Rohini Priyadarshini P. (Rank 243), 25-year-old engineer from Karamadai near Coimbatore, has cleared the finals in her third attempt. She attributes her success to perseverance and hard work. She will attempt a fourth time to better her rank. Since the interview went well, she is confident that it is the examination she has to concentrate on in her next attempt. R.A. Mahendira Varma (Rank 623), a lawyer by qualification and a resident of Kavindapadi, 26 km from Erode, is going to make another attempt – his sixth – to enter into the realms of the IAS cadre. From an agricultural family, his parents have been supportive of his keen interest and let him prepare from 2007. His elder sister is a doctor and he is keen to keep at it till his dream is realised. Though all three are looking at improving their ranks, they are firm in their thought that the State is being very well represented in the Civil Services examinations. Last year, among the 22 who cleared the IAS, four from Tamil Nadu were among the top 10, they say. The centre conducts coaching and mock interviews for Civil Services aspirants free of cost. The latest five take the total number to 28 that the centre has helped clear the examinations since its inception in 2008. P. Kanagaraj, chief mentor of the centre and associate professor of political science, Government Arts College, says no one can really explain the ranking pattern. “The final result can go either way. Most of them never give up. Perseverance and hard work will get them where they want to be,” he says. As many as 40 IAS and IPS officials are associated with the Higher Studies Centre, which is considered an asset. The expertise they share with the candidates during the course of their coaching helps them excel in their interviews. Rohini says there can be no better way than to learn from one's mistakes. “Every attempt is a chance to perfect oneself.” She was felicitated by Coimbatore Mayor S.M. Velusamy at the centre here on Saturday. kongutamizhan May 6th, 2012, 10:13 PM Nice blog for local news http://rooster-coimbatore.blogspot.com/ --------------------------------------------- Coimbatore teens take up Clickty Click challenge http://rooster-coimbatore.blogspot.com/2012/03/coimbatore-teens-take-up-clickty-click.html Schools in Coimbatore are paying serious attention to extra-curricular activities such as photography, after realising the talents and skills of their students. Last week, a local organisation that helps orphans, hosted a photography competition called “Clickty Click” that had over 26 city schools participating. One of the participants, who has even competed internationally, displayed talent and skill beyond his young years. It was Varun B. from Yuva Bharathi School who stood first in the competition, for his long exposure click around a U-turn that captured streaks of light from passing vehicles. Premier Vidyaa Vikash School had the most number of participants; they took home the 2nd and 3rd prizes. School coordinator N. Raja Lakshmi shared the need to inculcate this form of creativity in children. “It paves the way for better growth, so we always encourage our students with talents apart from academics to pursue them. It motivates them, so when we come across such talents like Narendran A. and Prakash K., we encourage them.” Also present at the event was a class 12 student from Chinamaya International residential school in Coimbatore who stood out the most. Akash Ghai has won several accolades even internationally. “My mother's a social worker and landscape photographer, so I grew up seeing her work and accompanying her to various photography and art exhibitions. She was the one who encouraged me to hold a solo photography exhibition at the Alliance Francaise gallery in Chandigarh when I was 17,” said Akash. On his style of photography, he said, “I am different from other photographers, I possess a unique perspective. A photographer's strength is how his style differs from others.” Akash further shared his interests, “I like art photography, photojournalism, portraiture and a bit of wildlife. I enjoy photographing people the most. International exposure at a young age for any photographer is essential as it boosts confidence and acquaints him with the quality of photographs he should be making. I've been part of exhibitions in India, Australia, Russia, Senegal and New York, and it feels great to be part of a global photographic community.” Malayaali May 8th, 2012, 03:36 PM X-posting from Kovai Transport Thread Please post in Kongu Arattai Mandram (Chai Bar) http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=1470768&page=5 Option 1 - Book a taxi to Ooty if you dont mind the cost. Option 2 - From Airport, catch a taxi or auto to Gandhipuram Bus Terminus. There are lots of buses to Ooty from there. But since summer holiday time, heavy crowd will be there. Not too long ago, the city's best eating spots were restricted to a chain of tried and tested restaurants in Coimbatore. There was no zing to the food culture in the city! The increasing influx of migrants has, however led to the mushrooming of several eat-out joints. That changed when foodies in the city, a group of passionate 'foodies' took the step to set up a review group on a social networking site, which now has over 1,700 active members. Anybody can post their feedback on joints they visit, and it is not always flattering. "My friend and I set up a food guide community for the city's avid foodies around three years ago, and initially posted our thoughts on food in the city. Once we set up a dedicated page to post our comments and met with a great response from not just people in the city but all over the country, we built a core review team which visits some of the prominent and upcoming eat-out joints in the city each weekend, and gives honest feedback and recommendations, to give good value for the hard-earned money," says Guhan Swaminathan, a self-confessed foodie who started the page along with a friend. For Guhan, falling in love with food wasn't a surprise. From a very young age he was fascinated as his dad was an avid foodie. Every weekend, Guhan comes down from Chennai to survey the food joints in the city. The page not just posts reviews, but also regular updates on upcoming food festivals in the city, for like-tongued foodies to attend. "I hunt for new restaurants and chat joints in the city every weekend, and post my review on the place so others can visit these joints," says Nishit Shah, who owns a popular tea and snack joint in the city. He frequents a South Indian mess in Avinashi Road for it's mouth-watering parottas and kalakkis, a new pizza joint at Sathy Road and a newly opened fusion cuisine restaurant in Ramnagar and vouches for their quality. "There is a new cafe that has opened up on Sathy Road which has an excellent ambience, with a couple of snooker tables, gaming console and some really good milkshakes. An apt hangout for the college crowd," he adds. While there is undoubtedly a good variety of restaurants in the city, there is still no food blogger to write about the restaurants and their preparations in greater detail. "While it is good that there are dedicated people to review food joints in and around the city and post comments on their page for others to benefit from, the city still lacks an active blogger who could stress on the best delicacies and preparations in each restaurant or eat-out joint, while Chennai has award winning food bloggers who even review cookbook preparations," rues Akash K J, a writer and an avid foodie. Akash has eaten at most of the popular joints in the city, but laments, "While there are several good spots in the city, we need people to blog about these joints, so people have a very clear picture," Akash stresses. All said and done, these foodies are set to treat Kovai to a gastronomic delight! kongutamizhan May 12th, 2012, 03:26 AM Important for parents!! The boy has been admitted to the intensive care unit of KG Hospital and his distraught parents are praying for his survival. Corporation officials, meanwhile, claimed that fresh tenders were being called for maintenance of the swimming pool and that they would ensure it was handed over to proper contractors for maintenance and safety of swimmers. "The condition of the boy is still critical. We cannot say anything at this point of time," said a hospital source. The incident occurred on Wednesday when the boy and his father had gone to the corporation swimming pool where a summer swimming coaching camp is being conducted. The boy reportedly dived into the pool and since there was no proper trainer in the vicinity, he almost drowned and a lot of water went into his internal organs. The blood supply to his brain was also cut off for more than 20 minutes since he was not given any first aid or Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) immediately after the mishap. The pool is about 62X22 feet in size and the shallow end is about 3.5 foot deep. The depth at the other end is about 12 feet. The pool was not being properly maintained as there was only a group of youth, all in their early 20s, without any proper training in first aid attending to the swimmers at the pool."His father and close family members are in a state of terrible shock and are not in a position to speak," said a distant relative. According to a hospital source, the boy reportedly went to the swimming class and dived into the water following instructions of the driving instructor. But he did not surface and the trainer also noticed it late before he was pulled out of the water. The boy had reportedly gone for the session along with his father, a professor at a private university in the city. "We had noticed the boy underwater and immediately took him down. We are in touch with the hospital authorities," said Arun Kumar, one of the workers employed at the pool. The corporation officials said the pool has been closed for two days since the tender has been expired. The contract will be awarded to a new set of private individuals for further maintenance. Swimming experts and coaches in the city expressed shock over the incident and claimed that it was extremely unfortunate that swimming coaching was being given at the corporation pool without proper guidance. "At least three life guards should be present at the pool whenever swimmers enter it, going by the sheer size of the pool," said M A Gireesh, a certified swimming coach at a private educational institute. kannan infratech May 13th, 2012, 10:29 AM ^^^^ A similar accident - fatal one - happened recently at the Railway Club, Sterling Road, Chennai. It was the third day of the summer photography camp organised by The Hindu and Savithri Photo House at TNAU. Leading them was Balan Madhavan, renowned nature, conservation and travel photographer, who introduced the students to photography lessons as he shared thoughts on wildlife conservation. “A photograph becomes successful when the viewer feels an emotional connection with the image. It should effectively communicate to the viewer, he said. Mr. Madhavan, a fellow of International League of Conservation Photographers, and a winner of many photography awards, said that with technological advancement people have started to judge photographs based on their technical quality. But, a sharp image does not make a good photograph, he added. According to Mr. Madhavan, the camp focused more on attitude and approach towards photography than on the technical aspects as most children used automatic cameras. Through creative exercises, he illustrated how to find the right photo opportunity and creatively use shapes and pattern to convey an idea. Principles of composition including arrangement of visuals and framing were explained in detail. It was followed by a feedback session on the photographs taken by the participants. “We clicked the images of fallen leaves, an old camera and bicycle when he asked us to take photographs on the topic ‘old age'. We learnt theoretical aspects like why we should not place subjects at the centre of the photograph. The use of aperture, shutter and ISO settings in cameras was also new to us,” said N. Sanjay Vardhan (Standard IX), Harris Richard (Standard IX) and K. Vivek (Standard X). Students of Standards IV- XII from various schools are taking part in the camp. Its 70-year-old caretaker turns nostalgic when asked about the days when horse carts occupied the city streets, carrying passengers across the region. Horse carts and horse riding have become things of past. The surviving horses are mostly used for transporting goods. Caretaker A Sardarbhai started working when at 10, and according to him, there were over 1500 horses in the city at that time. Carts had registration numbers, and were operated on city roads based on permission from civic authorities. Travellers were required to wear special badges, and violators were punished. There was even a special courtto deal with cases involving horse cart runners, known as Kuthira Vandi Court. According to Sardarbhai, those were times, when hiring a horse cart was a matter of prestige, and people had to book them in advance. "Senior advocates and doctors travelled on horse carts to show off their prestige and status. With the coming of modern vehicles, we were mostly used for taking children from their homes to their schools and back," he shares. Prabhu Subramaniayam, who presently owns four horses, says he continues the business as it was inherited from his forefathers. He is also one among the few who support the last horse stable in the city. "After giving the caretaker his due, and the animals enough food, there is nothing left for the owner. To meet both ends, I work as a head load worker," he said. According to Sardarbhai, he used to get Rs 20 to 30 per day fifty years ago for acting as caretaker. He is now getting only Rs 60 to Rs 70 per day. Horse-pulled carts are now used to transport vegetables and fruits to a few retail shops. On a good day, each horse cart operator can fetch between Rs200 and Rs250. Out of this, Rs180 is required to meet the food cost of the horse. The rest will be for the caretaker, says Prabhu. Surendar Singh (47), who owns two horses, says "Services like carrying people and goods have been taken up by fast moving vehicles. The few retailers who use us are old acquaintances. Rarely, we get a call for a marriage or temple function. Most of us continue the profession as we know no other job," he said. While the pullers say the corporation is not concerned about their welfare, corporation officials say they do not have any responsibility towards them. "We have provided space to retain the stable. It was brought here after the city developed. We have no other responsibility," the official said. Naveenmech May 26th, 2012, 09:48 AM There has always been a popular opinion about Coimbatore city: the common man needs to own a vehicle and a house if life has to be smooth here. This opinion stemmed from the inadequate mass rapid transport system and high rent. But, the first one – the vehicle—does not seem to be a blessing anymore what with periodical increase in the cost of petrol over the last few years and the steepest one yet (Rs.7.54 per litre) that took effect Wednesday midnight. People of Coimbatore, as in most tier two cities, will feel the pinch owing to very few modes of public transport to choose from. At the most, there may be a negligible shift to the buses by those who have fixed office timings and direct buses from a spot close to their house to one near their office. The public transport system available in the city are 713 buses (136 private vehicles and 577 operated by the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation), around 12,400 autorickshaws and nearly 2,700 call taxis. As for buses, almost all the town services operate on the arterial roads – Avanashi Road, Mettupalayam Road, Tiruchi Road, Palakkad Road and Marudamalai Road. Very few services connect interior areas, especially in the suburbs. The mini buses in these areas are no significant compensation. The autorickshaws and call taxis charge prohibitive rates and car pooling is not an option for everyone. Even in the heart of the city, it is a long walk for people from bus stops to places of work. The city is certainly missing an alternative mode of mass transit system and also smaller modes that could connect the stations/bus stands with work spots. The city examined various option of mass transit system, but nothing has worked. A mass rapid transit system as in Chennai was proposed more than a decade ago. But, the Southern Railways said the patronage would be low given the tendency of the people here to use private vehicles. Later, a circular railway system was suggested, but it was never even considered.:bash: The Coimbatore Corporation subsequently proposed a Bus Rapid Transit System implemented on a couple of arterial roads under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission. But, that too has been given up citing lack of feasibility. “The Government should seriously consider alternative mass rapid transit system for Coimbatore city because the rising fuel cost will only force the middle-income group not to use private vehicles,” vice-president of Residents Awareness Association of Coimbatore R.R. Balasundaram said. “We need to try out some train services during peak hours on the existing railway line. Some of the stations are not far from the residential colonies in the eastern part of the city. Those who have offices near the Coimbatore Railway Junction and a little away can travel by train,” he said. Osborn Edwin, who works in a nationalised bank near the railway junction, said he had to rely only on his motorcycle or petrol car. “I travel 20 km a day. People like me curse the petrol price rise, but are forced to endure it.” Dayal Prasad, an engineering student in a city college, said it would not be possible to travel by buses as these did not touch all spots in the city. Therefore, he would be forced to use a motorcycle whatever be the increase in the cost of petrol. Source: http://www.thehindu.com/news/cities/Coimbatore/article3455086.ece Its already late for a city of 2 million plus lacking good transportation. Atleast govt. should realise to think about the transportation infrastructure not only Coimbatore for all Tier-II cities of TN. My primary focus used to be schools based out of cbe. Eventhough currently I don't spend much time on it owing to other commitments, I can get the information you need on any school from people I know through my earlier contacts. And if you see a need for development or fund assistance for any schools in this area, feel free to contact Asha directly or post here. I spent a major part of my schooling there Words can't simply describe my feelings for it. I made the folly of moving to some other school in +1/+2 to escape quota system. I still consider it one my biggest personal blunders Just a very very small example , Nobody knows the meaning of copy/bit in PSBB. Because nobody would do that there. I remember no exam invigilator ever mentioning about it or chiding anyone in any exam. It is simply non-existent and unknown Kids simply don't/can't differentiate PSBB from their home Coming to academics , almost 50% of my friends chose to stay back. In that brood 56 made to the IIT's ( total seats were 1200+ all over India that year ) The fee they charge is worth the fare when compared to other Mushrooms which have sprang up recently It's a lovely place for kids to get groomed and to get their share of joy I sincerely hope they maintain their style and class even in the expansion mode of theirs to other cities Pakkam pakkamaa eludhalaam idhai pathi I am not taking away any credit from any other school , just sharing experience prasadrad June 5th, 2012, 05:49 PM Hi, What are the other educational institutions you are talking about? I am damn sure that the average number of new schools opened per year in the last 2-3 years should be the highest so far in the india/TN history. Again, 60-70% of the school management are cashing on this boom. World schools, International schools, Public schools are getting opened in cities, towns, villages, remote locations that one has never heard of. I would say 90%+ of these new schools follow CBSE, ICSE, IB curriculum. Simple case is my cousin who is basically a farmer (and now a real estate agent too for the obvious reasons) put his kid in 4th standard in a residential school (3-4 year old) which has horse riding, swimming in their curriculum. The school organized tour to delhi and agra for 4th, 5th and 6th students and the mode of travel is by air!!!! My cousin pays 1.5L per annum as all-inclusive fees. Memorandum In a memorandum to the Assistant General Manager of Southern Railway Headquarters, Chamber president M. Krishnan pointed out that the WP Class locomotive known as Big Black Boy with a star head was ruling like a king and it hauled the legendry Blue Mountain Express (Train Number formerly 5/6) and now numbered 12671/12672. The loco was used till 1980s. This was a heritage loco and the other one was known as Fairy Queen of East Indian Railway. The loco was very popular among rail users and rail fans in the past, with its shining star faced head, attractive to and fro motion of the piston, pulsating rhythmic sound of the crank levellers and connecting rods, occasional rush of hot steam rejected from the steam chest eventually getting condensed to hot droplets of water falling down, red hot furnace swallowing scoops and scoops of black anthracite coal, majestic gushing of smoke through its chimney during scavenging stroke and on top of it the coo---ing sound echoing and reverberating en route. Seeking the trial on August 15 and extending it for two or three more days, Mr.Krishnan placed a point favouring the plea for the heritage run around Independence Day. He said that freedom fighter V. O. Chidambaram Pillai was incarcerated in the prison in Coimbatore by the British rulers and the citizens of Coimbatore would like to take out a walk from the prison to the railway station for embarking on the heritage run. The move by Kerala government to revive a three-decade old project to dam the waters that flow into the Bhavani river from an arm of the Siruvani river downstream the Siruvani reservoir to irrigate the drought-prone region of Attapady in Palakkad district is likely to meet with opposition in Tamil Nadu. Residents of Coimbatore are apprehensive that a dam that would affect water flow into Bhavani could impact the supply of drinking water to the city. A high-level meeting attended by Kerala chief minister Oommen Chandy was held in Thiruvananthapuram on Thursday to revive the project. At present Bhavani water drawn through Pillur I and Pillur II projects augments water supplied from Siruvani dam, the main source of drinking water to Coimbatore. According to information gathered from the irrigation department of Kerala, the state plans to store at least four tmc ft of water in the proposed dam, the first to be constructed by Kerala in the Bhavani basin, which originates in the Attapady hills in Palakkad district. As per the plan, the 450-metre-long masonry gravity dam would irrigate 4,347 hectares (net) and 8,387 hectares (gross) of paddy and sugarcane fields, provide drinking water to Attapady region, and generate electricity. Kerala officials claim that the dam would not affect the flow into the Siruvani dam, which provides drinking water to Coimbatore City. The dam, they argue, is to be constructed on a stream that carries spillover water from the Siruvani dam and tap water from over half a dozen rivulets in the Muthukulam forests. The site is about 20 km away from existing Siruvani reservoir. However, city officials are a worried lot. "We are collecting information from Kerala. Any project that would reduce drinking water supply to Coimbatore should not be allowed. We will try our best to ensure water flow to Coimbatore is not affected," said T K Ponnusamy, commissioner of Coimbatore Corporation. "Kerala and Tamil Nadu must resist the dam project. It will neither promote agriculture in Attapady nor ensure drinking water for the local tribal community. Kerala is mooting the project without considering its ecological impact. The dam would deny drinking water to Coimbatore apart from destroying the ecological balance of Attappady,'' said S Jayachandran of Tamil Nadu Green Movement. "When a similar move was made by Tamil Nadu to divert water from the Chaliyar river through Pandiyar-Punnapuzha project in the Nilgiris, we resisted the move, joining hands with the people of Kerala. Now I hope environmental groups in Kerala would protest this project,'' he added. A senior official with the water resources department in Kerala claimed that the state is entitled to utilize its share of 6 tmcft (thousand million cubic feet) of water awarded under the Cauvery water-sharing agreement from the Bhavani. "Through this dam, we are planning to use only 4tmc of water,'' he said. According to officials, the Kerala government had spent Rs 19.5 crore in the 1980s to construct the base of the dam, a 9-km-long main canal, and an office complex at Agali, the main town in Attapady. As much as 750 acre of land was acquired at Venkkakadavu near Attapady and 51 tribal families were relocated. But the project was abandoned because of opposition from Tamil Nadu. The project was revived after Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee president Ramesh Chennithala visited Attappady last week. He had initiated the meeting on Thursday. Another meeting would be held in Thiruvanathapuram on Tuesday. It was a surprise when official sources revealed that the surgery department was non-functional because of rivalry between two of its members. No heart surgeries have been performed simply because the head of department and an associate professor cannot see eye to eye inside the operation theatre. All heart patients are referred to the government hospitals in Madurai or Chennai. While this unfortunate situation brings to the forefront issues such as patient welfare, medical ethics and social responsibility, the hospital administration seems indifferent to the urgency with which the problem needs to be resolved, says an official source. No concrete steps have been taken in this regard. They prefer to adopt the wait and watch approach, hoping the ego clash will resolve itself, the source added. Meanwhile, heart patients are forced to endure the threat of death. "We have the necessary equipment and the technicians and materials needed for surgery can be easily arranged," said Dr M Vanithamani, HOD, CMCH. Dr K S Ganesan, who performed the first open heart surgery along with Vanithamani in 2004 at the hospital was transferred out of Coimbatore and later reinstalled at CMCH in 2008. Meanwhile, Vanithamani was also transferred out of the city and came back to CMCH around the same time. Ever since then, no open heart surgery has been performed at the hospital as both Ganesan and Manithamani could not see eye to eye. Vital equipment including heart lung machine, hypothermia machine and blood gas analyser are available at the hospital. Micro vascular equipment needed for surgery will have to be procured but hospital authorities claimed that it could be done once the department is ready to perform surgery at the hospital. There is no shortage of patients with chronic heart ailments. Doctors themselves say that they get at least five patients who need open heart surgery on a monthly basis. "I have been a vital part of the department and was holding full responsibility as a cardiac surgeon before I was transferred out. Now I have to take orders from another doctor who is my junior," claimed one of the doctors. The problem is severe so much so that one of the solutions offered was to set up two independent cardiac surgery units with each heading one, so that they did not have to collaborate. "Cooperation from colleagues and hospital authorities is vital to ensure the success of such complex surgical procedures," said Dr Ganesan. The hospital has to arrange for some post operative equipment and also standby life saving machines like Intra Aortic Balloon Pump but the authorities claim that once the surgeons are ready to perform together, the other requirements could be easily arranged. The hospital also lacks a catheterization laboratory for cardiac patients. However, hospital authorities claimed that the angiography procedure is being done at an outside facility for the time being. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/coimbatore/No-heart-surgeries-at-CMCH-since-2008/articleshow/14829121.cms prasadrad July 12th, 2012, 06:01 AM Really a bad example of medical ethics :bash::bash: Atrocious , idhelaam oru reason for not performing surgery, I have seen a similar piece of news of this minister warning these guys in CMCH some time back too kongutamizhan July 13th, 2012, 10:47 PM Currentu than illai. Soundariya Preetha The wait for electricity meters for more than five months does not seem to be long enough. Now, consumers need to wait for hours at the designated outlets. The Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO) has approved six companies in Coimbatore, Tirupur and the Nilgiris Districts, including three here, for supply of meters directly to consumers. Since January 1 this year, TANGEDCO was unable to supply single phase motors to applicants who wanted new power connection. Nearly 30,000 connections were pending in need of meters here. During the last one month the private companies approved by TANGEDCO had supplied 10,000 meters here, says A. Thangavel, Chief Engineer of TANGEDCO, Coimbatore. Another 20,000 meters need to be supplied. Since there was a shortage now it could take a month for the pending requirements to be completely met and the supply to be normal, he adds. The problem is mainly for single phase meters and the supply of three phase meters has not been affected. K. Kathirmathiyon, secretary of Coimbatore Consumer Cause, says meter shortage and the consequent delay in providing electricity connection is on since 2007 in phases. Consumers can now purchase directly from the TANGEDCO-approved manufacturers. The manufacturers know the demand and should be able to cater to it on time. The TANGEDCO could also increase the number of suppliers or ask those distributing the meters now to increase the supply. “It is the duty and responsibility of the TANGEDCO to ensure that the supply is adequate,” he said. kongutamizhan July 20th, 2012, 12:46 AM Siruvani position continues to be critical http://www.thehindu.com/multimedia/dynamic/01148/CB18_SIRUVANI_DAM_1148540f.jpg Water level in the Siruvani Dam is no cause for comfort. File Photo: K. Ananthan More than a month into the southwest monsoon, the water level in the Siruvani Dam continues to be critical. As on July 17, the water level stood at 9.84 ft. The full reservoir level is 49.54 ft. Sources say the poor rains from the monsoon have led to a situation, where the Coimbatore Corporation, the main beneficiary, is forced to have a relook at the water supply cycle. The water level has remained at the 866 m mark for over a week now. On July 10 the water level stood at 865.85 m. On July 13 and 14 it was at 866 m. For a couple of days thereafter the water level dipped marginally only to reach the 866 m mark again. The absence of change in water level is on account of the poor inflow into the dam. In the past week, the rainfall in Siruvani did not cross 20 mm. The sources say they are worried as the situation has not been this bad in the recent past. The current water level is at least 25 feet less than what it was a year ago. And this calls for rationalisation of supply. The Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board supplies 80 million litres a day, of which around 65 mld reaches the Corporation. This supply brings down the water level by around 10 cm a day. As far as the Aliyar water supply goes, the Corporation is on a strong wicket. As against the designed quantity of 7.33 mld, the civic body has been receiving eight mld. The TWAD Board has also removed the generators it used to streamline supply when power cut impacted the supply at pumping station. kongutamizhan July 20th, 2012, 12:50 AM PMK's push to garner votes in western belt :) Eppadiyo nallathu nadantha sari http://www.thehindu.com/news/cities/Coimbatore/article3656896.ece The Pattali Makkal Katchi will hold an exhibition on prohibition in the city on Friday, said the party leader G.K. Photo: S.Siva.Saravanan Some are trapped in fishing nets lowered into the water and others are killed by boys with catapults Visitors to the city have been killed. They have been targets for quite a while now. And their killings have not drawn the attention of the authorities concerned because they happen to be birds. Nature enthusiasts say black cormorant, little grebe, little cormorant, darter, egret, heron and other migratory birds that frequent the city’s tanks or wet lands are being killed, trapped, sold for meat for both fun and commercial gain. This happens quite frequently in tanks in Kurichi, Singanallur, Vellalore, off Thadagam Road and other places as well, says M. Umesh, a nature enthusiast and Kurichi resident. More so now, when the water level at the tanks is down, adds C.R. Jayaprakash, Charter Member, Salim Ali Naturalists Forum, Coimbatore. At these tanks, fishermen and those into bird hunting spread fishing net into the water, into which the birds get caught while hunting fish. As the birds attempt to wriggle out of the net, the hunters grab and kill the birds. Sometimes the hunters also sell the birds to sellers in Ukkadam, Mr. Umesh says. He alleges that he has seen young boys hunting for fun as well. During mornings as well as evenings, the boys can be seen hunting birds using catapults near Kurichi tank. It is also true of other tanks in and around the city. Mr. Jayaprakash says that during summer bird hunting is on the increase because with the reduction in water level, fish move around in a small area attracting birds that prey. As more birds congregate, they attract hunters. And this is true of Singanallur tank as well. He says members of various environment organisations have complained to the authorities concerned but to no avail. The officials receive the suggestion with the perception that the civil society or environment organisations interfere with their work, are a hindrance and put down suggestions. They initiate no action. So much so that birds that come under Schedule III or IV of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972 are being sold in the open in markets near Ukkadam, he adds. K. Kalidasan of OSAI says that hunting birds is a serious issue because birds play an important role in wetland conservation by helping vegetation grow. And a few of those birds are also scavengers – meaning, they prey on carcass of birds and animals. These avian species visit Coimbatore between June and December for nesting and roosting because of the 18 water bodies and ideal breeding climate. Forest Department sources acknowledge that Tuesday’s incident involving youngsters and habitual offenders hunting cormorant has thrown light on the lack of protective measures and the need to initiate steps to protect the birds. District Forest Officer V. Thirunavukkarasu says that as and when people come across hunting or attempt to hunt birds, they should inform the same to the District Forest Office at 0422-2456911 or send SMS to 94431 53200 giving the location, to enable the Department to initiate action. He also says that the Department will post forest guards to patrol the water bodies to check the offenders. The Department will initiate legal action against the offenders under provisions of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972 as these birds came under various schedules of the Act. kongutamizhan July 26th, 2012, 09:29 PM http://www.thehindu.com/news/cities/Coimbatore/article3686067.ece City autorickshaw drivers make effort to bring in fare system V. S. Palaniappan http://www.thehindu.com/multimedia/dynamic/01155/auto_1155743f.jpg group of autorickshaw drivers, a couple of days ago, offered to run their autorickshaws by meter fare provided they were allowed to collect Rs. 30 as minimum fare and Rs. 12 per km The attempt by a section of nearly 60 autorickshaw drivers recently to ply their vehicles wearing uniform, badge and more importantly, by meter fare system, has triggered a fresh round of efforts to streamline the autorickshaw network system in the city, long known to fleece passengers. There were umpteen attempts in the past to streamline autorickshaw fares and bring in a meter fare system. None of the efforts could be sustained because of the recalcitrant attitude of the autorickshaw drivers who, time and again, opposed the meter fare seeking a hike in tariff fixed by the Government citing spiralling fuel costs. The autorickshaw drivers demanded that the minimum fare and fare per kilometre meet the fuel price, wear and tear of the vehicle, spares cost, insurance premium and rent for the autorickshaw. They said that the fare fixed by the Government was unrealistic. Even the autorickshaw drivers’ trade unions who agreed to ply by the meter fare wanted the Government to fix revised fares realistically. Official sources admitted that the minimum fare of Rs. 7 fixed earlier and the subsequent minimum fare of Rs. 14 and Rs. 6 per km, proved to be inadequate, considering the operating costs involved, especially when petrol prices went up manifold at frequent intervals. But lack of political will on the part of successive Governments resulted in the administration not being able to make any major headway in implementing the meter fare system for autorickshaws. The trend resulted in Coimbatore almost becoming ‘notorious’ for fleecing passengers by autorickshaw operators said K. Kathirmathiyon, secretary of Coimbatore Consumer Cause. He said that fixation of a realistic fare involving upward revision was always shelved by successive Governments for the fear of becoming unpopular. Absence of a realistic fare system gave a blank cheque to the autorickshaw drivers to collect fares at their whim and at one stage, fleecing of passengers continued unabated, Mr. Kathirmathiyon added. Meanwhile, a group of autorickshaw drivers, a couple of days ago, offered to run their autorickshaws by meter fare provided they were allowed to collect Rs. 30 as minimum fare and Rs. 12 per km. They also sought protection from the police and district administration and transport department as they feared resistance, assault or intimidation by autorickshaw drivers not willing to ply by meter fare. The Government fixed autorickshaw auto fare at present is Rs. 14 at the minimum fare and Rs. 6 per kilometre. City Police Commissioner A.K. Viswanathan said that police will stand by autorickshaw drivers who want to abide by the rule and offer them protection to encourage the culture of plying autorickshaws by meter fare. When contacted, District Collector M. Karunagaran said that Deputy Transport Commissioner of Coimbatore Circle K.N. Uthayanun was holding talks with those autorickshaw drivers offering to ply by the meter fare. Mr. Uthayanun told The Hindu that the Transport Commissionerate was already on the job of finalising a proposal to implement a meter fare system. Until the proposal gets a nod, the drivers were asked to stick to the Government’s fixed fare and ply their vehicles. Meanwhile, CITU Autorickshaw Workers Union leader P.K. Saguaro said it was the Government and the administrative machinery that delayed the revision of autorickshaw fares. Autorickshaw operators were ready to ply by the meter fare, provided a reasonable and realistic fare was fixed. The CITU is planning a meeting of all autorickshaw unions on July 28. The CITU and other unions, on consensus, will finalise a fare structure of Rs. 40 as minimum fare and Rs. 20 per km and exhort the Government to accord sanction for the same and ensure its enforcement so that complaints of fleecing comes to an end finally. prasadrad July 27th, 2012, 10:07 AM ^^ ^^ ^^ 20 Rs Per Km is too much , BLR has 11 Rs Per Km deepu051993 July 27th, 2012, 11:19 AM ^^ ^^ ^^ 20 Rs Per Km is too much , BLR has 11 Rs Per Km Sir he too needs to have a good livelihood. Very less number of Auto's use Petrol as fuel these days , they mostly use Diesel/LPG which is much more efficient and profitable. Auto usage is infrequent in TN because of the high fares and better public transport. If they don't get customers who is to blame ? First of all this auto stand concept in TN should be abolished in all places except main Railway Stations/Bus Stands. These stands are the brewing pot of all troubles waiting to fleece customers as they don't spend on fuel and can afford to wait. Also the nexus between these people and Policemen/Politicians should be broken ( I definitely don't know how ). If you have used such transport in Blr/Mysore/Mumbai you will accept my points for sure kongutamizhan July 29th, 2012, 06:35 PM Talking about auto fare and Coimbatore one has to take into consideration the road conditions in the city too. For the last 2 years, most of the roads in the city are like afgan war zones. Roads digged for UGD works, and UGD didn't happen plus roads continue to remain bad. As per the auto drivers that we use regularly, autos in the city breakdown more frequently nowadays than it ever used to be. Once it breaks down then they are out of job for few days because the turn-around time to fix it too is longer than before (anagyum labor prachanai and cost). The driver our family uses say that the maintenance expenses increased 400% than 2 years back. (Irrespective of cab or auto they now go to a mechanic shop 4 times a year assuming they had to do that once a year few years ago). Plus you have inflation. I am okay with Rs.20/- minimum standardized fare compared to outrageous (read vayila vandha amount) that they ask for now. kongutamizhan July 29th, 2012, 08:54 PM http://www.thehindu.com/news/cities/Coimbatore/article3699463.ece kongutamizhan July 30th, 2012, 05:23 PM http://www.thehindu.com/news/cities/Coimbatore/article3702402.ece Following Sruthi's incident School, college vehicles in the city under the scanner kongutamizhan July 30th, 2012, 05:27 PM I can see where they are going with few issues aanalum idhu nemba overu http://www.thehindu.com/news/cities/Coimbatore/article3702489.ece Autorickshaw drivers lay condition for metered fare In the release, the union has also asked for housing facilities for autorickshaw drivers and action against those financiers who charged usurious rate of interest. kongutamizhan July 31st, 2012, 06:09 PM Man on a mission http://www.deccanchronicle.com/tabloid/all-rounders/man-mission-209 While some people embark on a charitable mission for selfish reasons, it’s heartening to see those who genuinely do it for the pure joy of giving; just to help out another or put a smile on someone’s face. T. Thanushgaran, chairman of Kannan Departmental stores, belongs to the latter. He is someone who has immensely contributed to old age homes and orphanages by providing them with basic amenities and improving their living standards. The son of an agriculturalist, Thanushgaran completed his PUC in Nagercoil and today he is chairman of one of the largest chains of departmental stores in Tamil Nadu. “While growing up, my parents instilled the right values in me and taught me to always help others. After spending decades building my brand, I reached a certain degree of fulfillment and decided that it was time to give back,” he says. About his initiative he shares, “I like the simple joy that comes from helping ease the difficulties in the lives of others. Which is why, two years ago, I started this initiative of collecting old and unused things — from couches to washing machines — fixing them and then donating the same to old age homes and orphanages across the city.” How did he come up with this idea? “On a particular day each year in Germany, residents leave unwanted or unused goods on the curb of their streets for anyone willing to take them. It can range from curtains to washing machines. I returned inspired from that trip and decided to do something similar to help those who lack basic necessities. "With my network reach, I have delivery men who are able to source things from the homes that they deliver goods to. They then bring them to my godowns, where I have people to fix them,” he explains. prasadrad August 1st, 2012, 04:46 PM Atrocious , idhelaam oru reason for not performing surgery, I have seen a similar piece of news of this minister warning these guys in CMCH some time back too Sequel to the CMCH issue http://www.thehindu.com/news/cities/Coimbatore/article3710846.ece kongutamizhan August 1st, 2012, 05:12 PM http://www.thehindu.com/news/cities/Coimbatore/article3710855.ece From India to the U.S., with frozen sambar Her innovations get international recognition and a fat paycheck The job that Revathi Udayshankar has landed in Michigan, the United States, goes to bust many a myth about international placements. She is neither a software engineer, nor does she have a management degree from any of the Indian Institutes of Management. Yet, she has got an international placement with a pay package of Rs. 23 lakh a year. Technical specialist A B.Tech. in food processing engineering from Tamil Nadu Agricultural University and an MBA from Sasi Creative School of Business, 24-year-old Revathi has just received an offer letter from Yem Foods LLC, the U.S., to work as a technical specialist in the food process development department of the company. Expansion “The Indian company, which specialises in manufacturing Indian instant food, develops, manufactures and markets Indian food in Michigan. As part of their expansion process, Yem Foods was looking out for a food technologist who was well versed in Indian foods, with technical and financial expertise. When we identified her to the company as part of campus placement activity, Revathi was chosen for the job,” Rajdeepan Swaminathan, Managing Trustee of the B-School, says. According to him, the interesting aspect in this placement is that she did not get the job merely for her educational qualification, but for her innovative ideas that she had projected through her projects she undertook as part of her course. Passion For Revathy, food has always been a passion, in the scientific way. During the course of her engineering study she knew her heart was in instant foods and designing equipment for food processing. It was this technical orientation towards food that drove her to take up a job in the research and development (R&D) section of a fast food company in Coimbatore after her engineering. Her very first product – instant gulab jamun mix – was launched by the company. She went on to make instant ice cream, rasam and coffee mixes. Management course Though she was doing what came to her best, she felt that she had to be better equipped in terms of the financial aspects and that made her take up MBA with specialisation in production and finance. “In addition to the routine project, our B-School encourages us to take up a project based on an original innovation, which can be offered to any company. Since my interest was in instant foods, I did a project where whey, a byproduct of cheese and paneer, could be incorporated into corn flakes. Athletes and other sports persons consume whey as a drink for muscle strengthening,” Revathy says. In the course of the interview that was held via seven conference calls, she was only quizzed on her projects at TNAU and Sasi School. After that she was also given a project on developing and marketing frozen sambar to test her innovative bent of mind. According to Mr. Swaminathan, the company will benefit largely because of Revathy. Her innovative ideas would help the company that was planning to come up with newer products to cater to Indians in the United States, he said. kongutamizhan August 8th, 2012, 12:41 AM Pathetic state of water bodies - Images http://www.thehindu.com/news/cities/Coimbatore/article3727528.ece?ref=slideshow prasadrad August 8th, 2012, 03:42 AM http://www.thehindu.com/news/cities/Coimbatore/article3727528.ece?ref=slideshow[/QUOTE] reswaran August 8th, 2012, 12:31 PM 40 rs as mimimum fare is too much. 20 Rs should be minimum. per KM it can be 12 to 15 rs. (It depends on number of autos, public transport availability, etc..) 2. Cost of fuel 3. Inflation in general. They should come out with a formulation which will take these 3 components and return the auto fare. They can re-run the formula every 6 months or so and then revise the fare. Apart from the Kural, Claire is also besotted with Subramaniya Bharathi and his poetry. Claire is one of the many foreign students in the city who have taken to learning Tamil as part of their course work. Apart from the customary 'nandri', 'vanakkam' and the dude Tamil Lingo of 'macha' and 'machi' imbibed from peer-talk in the campus and hostels, Claire and others are trying not only to expand their vocabulary and but also understand and enjoy some of the classics, ancient and modern, of Tamil literature. At least 20 students from CMS take classes in Kural. Of course, it is a tough task. "The accent and tone of Tamil is entirely different from our language (Kinyarwanda). So learning Tamil is a challenge for me," says Claire. Most of the students initially learn Tamil to converse easily and forge a friendly bond with peers and local residents. "All students learn basic Tamil during the second year of the degree course. Some show a little more interest in the language and literature and we teach them a few hours every week," says Pon Kausalya, a Tamil professor at the college. For students like Purna Bahadur Pradhan, a third year B.Com student from Bhutan, the language classes has made the weekly visits to the vegetable market less stressful. He doesn't resort to sign language anymore with the shopkeepers as he now asks for thakkali, vendakka and other items in Tamil. He even tries friendly batter with the shopkeepers who often reciprocate cheerfully to his efforts to speak in their language. Pradhan's friend Richen Dorzi says his social circle has widened after taking Tamil lessons. "Our local friends encourage our interest in Tamil which helps to get new friends," he says. "Learning an extra language is always a great feeling. It will definitely help us in a big way in our future," says Irakozo Divine, a student from Burundi. But Rlys spend meagre amount on development. One reason stated is lack of space. My suggestion would be to develop Coimbatore North as CBE Central Station and present Rly Junction to be renamed as CBE South or any other name. Space is available in North for more platforms and Car Park etc. It can be developed as a World Class Rly Station. All friends, pls think over this suggestion.
