Haiti Leads Region in Projected Hotel Development

MIAMI, USA (defend.ht/caribjournal.com) - Haiti leads the Caribbean and Mexico in hotel development having the most rooms expected to be developed in its near future.

Research done by the staff of Caribbean news magazine, Caribbean Journal found that the region has 131 hotels, 17,923 rooms in the plans and 753 of those rooms are to be built in Haiti; the largest expected growth by a country in the region.

Haiti's expected development is more than twice the amount of other countries expecting significant growth. For example, Caribbean Journal found:
...Anguilla, with 28.8 percent growth, or 220 rooms in the pipeline and Dominica with 13.5 percent growth, or 90 rooms in the pipeline.
St Kitts and Nevis reported 11.7 percent growth, with 235 rooms in the active pipeline.
The Turks and Caicos Islands had expected growth of 10.2 percent, or 327 total rooms.

Contributing to the high forecast of development are delays in construction, political clearance and the earthquake of January 12, 2010.

For example, the Oasis Hotel and Conference Center which began construction in late 2009 remains underdeveloped. There was a work stoppage following the 2010 earthquake and the Vice President of its Board of Directors and trustee, Guiteau Toussaint was murdered in June 2011, forcing a restructuring of the organization causing further delay.

A 250-room hotel to be constructed adjacent of the Toussaint Louverture International Airport is also a project delayed. This hotel was signed and agreed upon in September of 2010 and has an 18-month window to be developed. A memorandum of understanding was signed by the Haitian government and developers of this hotel more than a year later at the Invest in Haiti Forum 2011.

A new development is a 173-room Marriott Hotel that was signed into agreement in November 2011 between Digicel, the Clinton Foundation and Marriott Hotels and Resorts. This hotel is expected to be completed by the summer of 2014.

Michael Capponi, famed entrepreneur and developer from south Florida is developing an entire block of new business and hotels in Jacmel, Haiti as well.

Haitians are hopeful barring any political instability or apocalyptic-level natural disaster that the country has the potential to make huge gains in a short amount of time. Exactly what the people of Haiti need to become competitors in the region's economy.

Haiti has inaugurated the new Millet bridge on the Route de Freres funded by the United States Agency for International Development.

The opening ceremony in Freres this week was attended by Haiti President Michel Martelly and US Ambassador to Haiti Pamela White.

The project is located on Haiti’s Route de Freres, the primary link between Petion-Ville and Tabarre in Port-au-Prince.

PORT-AU-PRINCE - Haiti is one of the safest destinations; not just in the Caribbean, but throughout all the Americas. This is the general finding of recent studies on crime in the region which show that Haiti has the lowest rate of violent deaths in comparison to previous years.

In 2012 according to the UNODC, Haiti's violent death rate of 6.9 out of every hundred thousand Haitians is among the lowest rates in the Americas, and the same as Long Beach, California. This is mainly attributable to a strong focus on the strengthening and modernization of its security forces.

Among other high impact measures, the government of Haiti kept its pledge to increase the size of its National Police by 50%, allowing them to fight crime more effectively. Besides increasing the size of its force, the Haitian National Police (HNP) is counting on innovative technologies to track down criminals. For example, they were able to dismantle the largest kidnapping ring in the country with the help of advanced software designed by a Haitian official trained at Westpoint --a program so effective, it has sparked the interest of the HNP's foreign advisers.

A report by Vanderbilt University's Latin American public opinion project noted the Haitian National Police's positive image compared to security institutions throughout Latin America, which are seen as weak, corrupt or inefficient. A recent poll conducted locally for an international agency notes that Haitian citizens are generally more concerned with economic issues such as the cost of living, than with crime.

And, according to the most recent report for the American Consular Services, which keeps statistics of crimes involving American citizens, in 2012 murders dropped by two thirds – from 6 to 2 - the lowest rate since 2006. The same report notes that kidnappings of U.S. citizens also dropped in 2012 from 9 to 11.

The notice issued by the U.S. State Department warning US citizens about the persistent danger of violent crime does not take into account these significant improvements in Haiti. "The kidnapping and murder of U.S. citizens is extremely rare in our country; we work diligently and closely with the United States, Canada and the international community to fight the proliferation of criminal activities," said Laurent Lamothe, the Prime Minister of Haiti.

The State Department warning comes as Haiti is experiencing a dramatic increase in the number of foreign visitors. Pointing to statistics compiled by her office, Minister of Tourism Stephanie Villedrouin notes that "in 2011, we welcomed 46% more US tourists than in 2010."

While the rest of the region experiences difficulty in containing violent crime rates, Haiti shows positive trends largely as a result of the strengthening of the Haitian National Police, the incorporation of human resources and new technologies into its anti-crime strategies, and, the establishment of a welcoming political and economic climate.

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti — The U.S. government plans to build two prisons in Haiti's countryside in an effort to stem severe overcrowding, disease and violence in the poor Caribbean nation's prison system, a U.S. official said.
Carl Siebentritt, director of the Narcotics Affairs Section at the U.S. Embassy, wrote in an email to The Associated Press that a prison will be built in each of the coastal towns of Petit Goave and Cabaret.

"Prisons are so overcrowded that detainees are held in temporary holding cells at police stations," Siebentritt wrote. "By constructing new prisons that are consistent with international human rights standards, the (U.S. State) Department seeks to alleviate this overcrowding and to reduce the spread of disease and violence."

The department's Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs estimates that the project will cost between $5 million and $10 million, public records say.

The penitentiary planned for Cabaret, a town 19 miles (32 kilometers) northwest of Haiti's capital, will hold women and help reduce crowding at a women's prison in the Port-au-Prince area. It will have 200 beds. It will also include a textile operation that will employ up to 15 women and a vocational training program.

The prison planned for Petit Goave, a town 43 miles (70 kilometers) southwest of Port-au-Prince, will have 150 beds and replace one that was destroyed in 2004 following the ouster of President Jean-Bertrand Aristide.

In 2010, Collège Mixte Le Bon Berger was a six-classroom, 12-grade school built just a few years prior that nevertheless needed to be entirely replaced. The Haiti team began design by conducting charrettes with the school owners and faculty. A new scheme emerged as a multi-phase solution begining with an eight-classroom, handicap-accessible school block. The design and construction would work with Haitian builders and artisans to pinpoint Montrouis identity and passion for learning.

Phase 1 was completed in early 2012, opening on February 29 for nearly 400 students to begin classes in a stunning example of Haitian architecture.

Haiti’s economy is projected to grow by 6.5 percent in 2013, according to the International Monetary Fund’s latest World Economic Outlook.

That number is in line with a projection made by the IMF in late 2012.

Haiti’s economy grew 2.8 percent last year, although it had been projected to grow at a significantly higher rate. The IMF said the reduction was due in part to a series of crippling tropical storms and low execution of public capital spending.

A January projection by the World Bank forecasted a 6 percent growth rate for the country this year.

The country’s real GDP is projected to grow at a clip of 6.3 percent in 2014, according to the fund.

The project « Monte-Cristo Hôtel & Suites » has received the approval of the Interministerial Commission of Investments (CII). Consequently, this project will benefit of all incentives provided by the Investment Code and the accompanying of Ministry of Tourism.

The Monte-Cristo Hôtel & suites, represented by its promoter-investor, Mr. Max Donald Guillaume, will be located on the road to Tabarre, opposite the playground of SunAuto. As of this year (Phase I), the Monte-Cristo Hôtel & suites, built in compliance with seismic standards, will propose 47 rooms of international standard. In its final phase, the hotel will have a total of 84 rooms, ncluding 6 suites and 2 rooms for disabled guests.

The Monte-Cristo Hôtel & suites will also have : a conference room, a parking lot that can accommodate over a hundred vehicles, a restaurant and bar, a swimming pool, an outdoor bar, a fitness room and a nightclub, among others.

The total investment amounted to nearly 9 million U.S. dollars and will generate over 100 direct jobs. Moreover, in the objective to offer a quality service that meets international standards, Max Donald Guillaume, said he was open to a partnership with international groups to manage the hotel.

This goes to show you that the coin has two sides. When one reads about Haiti in the USA press is only about negative news with a minimun of good and positive information. This tread demostrates otherwise and the other side of the coin, the positive one - Good news I must say. All this building boom will change the face of Port-au-Prince and the rest of the country - So, keep it going, it will only get better if things are done the right way. Very nice indeed. Cheers!

Los países de América Latina y el Caribe crecerán en promedio 3.5 por ciento, gracias al dinamismo que mantendrá la demanda interna y el mejor desempeño de Argentina y Brasil en comparación con 2012.

El comportamiento para 2013 obedece, por un lado, al mayor crecimiento esperado de Argentina (3.5%) y Brasil (3.0%) debido a la recuperación de la actividad agrícola y de la inversión, que anotaron caídas en estos dos países en 2012.

Se suma la permanencia de elevados precios de las materias primas, las que si bien se espera que registren una baja con relación a 2012, se mantendrían todavía en niveles elevados.

Se prevé crecimiento regional levemente menor, respecto a la estimación entregada en diciembre pasado (3.8%) principalmente por la mantención de la incertidumbre sobre el futuro de la economía internacional, el bajo dinamismo de las economías desarrolladas y recuperación menos dinámica que previsto en Argentina y Brasil.

Paraguay liderará la expansión en 2013 con un crecimiento esperado del producto interno bruto (PIB) de 10 por ciento, seguido por Panamá (8.0%), Perú (6,0%) y Haití (6.0%). Yes indeed! I believe that Haiti has definitely entered a period of economic growth for the foreseeable future (The trick will be to keep it going...but I am sure this time they will try harder hence this is a good opportunity to invest in the country various sectors of the economy...).

It is about time this country's economy finally gains the momentum to improve its economy in a sustainable manner for the long term. Good for the people of Haiti - They deserve the opportunity to enjoy a better standard of living and of course, good decent jobs.

El acuerdo es producto de las acciones de coordinación realizadas por la Secretaría de Relaciones Exteriores, la Secretaría de Planificación y Cooperación Externa (SEPLAN), y la Embajada de Honduras en República Dominicana (concurrente en Haití), conjuntamente con el Ministerio de Asuntos Extranjeros y Culto de la República de Haití.

El Acuerdo Marco de Cooperación fue suscrito por la embajadora Mireya Agüero de Corrales, Secretaria de Estado designada en el Despacho de Relaciones Exteriores de la República de Honduras, y Pierre Richard Casimir, Ministro de Asuntos Extranjeros y Culto de Haití, quienes manifestaron que el documento testimonia los históricos lazos de amistad y solidaridad que unen a ambos Estados. El instrumento destaca el compromiso de Honduras y Haití de desarrollar programas y proyectos de cooperación en áreas de interés mutuo, las cuales serán identificadas en base a las prioridades que integran sus estrategias y planes de desarrollo respectivos. Asimismo, pretende impulsar la producción agrícola en el campo, enseñando a los haitianos de las zonas rurales, técnicas sostenibles con bajo impacto ambiental y mediante la conservación de los recursos naturales. hondudiario

The project supports the design and construction of a new regional hospital and facilities, focused mainly on mother and child services, with 200 beds, in Gonaïves. Designed using principles of sustainable development, the project’s objective was to improve the quality of and access to specialized healthcare services for the Artibonite regional department. The project also aimed to improve the healthcare system by establishing a prototype that could be reproduced throughout the country’s regional departments.

Planning covered the following services spread among 12 operating units: medicine, pediatrics, gynecology and obstetrics, surgery, ORL and ophthalmology, emergency, intensive care, the operating suite, odontology, social assistance and psychosocial support, and physiotherapy. The laboratories were designed according to the standards of the Laboratoire National du Batiment et des Travaux Publics d’Haïti.

A waiting village with capacity for 100 people is reserved for families of hospitalized patients. And to ensure the retention of hospital personnel, a housing component (studios and apartments) has been organized on the hospital site.
