Clarion Hotel & Congress Trondheim
Clarion Hotel Trondheim on Urbika (http://www.urbika.com/projects/view/2153-clarion-hotel-trondh)

A 35 000 m2 hotel and aquarium in Trondheim. The hotel has 400 rooms and will be one of the largest conference hotels in Scandinavia. The
conference facilities include a congress/culture hall for 2000 people. Next to the hotel is a public park covering the 400 cars parking garage
which serves the hotel, aquarium and the existing swimming hall.

The white glass facade with a pixellated silk-screen print surrounds the hotel’s most striking feature: a star-shaped, golden atrium. Unlike
conventional atrium designs – where a grand, central, vertical space is exposed under a glazed roof – the Brattøra lobby has a much more complex
structure. It combines a series of views and angles, from panoramic fjord scenery to more intimate glimpses of the surrounding area. This puts the
hotel into context with Trondheim’s cityscape, where a large grid of straight streets is intersected by narrow, mediaeval closes.

Throughout the project, its designers have emphasised sustainability and an affinity with the site’s architectural typology. Public consultation and
interaction with local politicians led to some elevation design changes during the early stages of the development.

Due for completion in April 2012 the parking facilities on the site was torn down in January 2010, with foundation works on the hotel been prepared
through the spring of 2010.

This being Trondheim, the day after a project is presented the criticism comes.

That is not to say that all criticism is without foundation.

^^ that hotel was completely stopped a few years ago due to heavy opposition on the heights (8 floors tall). It has now been lowered to 7 floors.

That was approved.

Now they are back trying to stop it because its not green enough.

So far this opposition have made the project worse. Trondheim really need a grand hotel, but since they had to reduce the hotel, that cause is already lost! They should have done that 20 floor tall proposal which was one of the suggestions for this new hotel!

I also see i have not mentioned Brattøra Kongresshotel in this thread yet. This is the renderings of the hotel at Brattøra, nabouring Pirbadet and Rockheim. The renderings are
not updated since they had to lower to building by one floor, so it will be one floor lower than on the renderings.

Looking at the sketches, are these recently updated? I see that the old speedboat terminal (located between the hotel and Pirbadet) is not there. I know some of our (lame) politicians talked about tearing it down to get their freaking precious view of the fjord, but i am not aware if any such thing is decided. It would be a big shame if that was to happen, because it is a really nice building.

Also, the aquarium is drawn in. It is still not clear to me if that is decided to be built yet er not. Do you know if that is confirmed?

Þróndeimr
May 21st, 2010, 12:41 PM
^^ I am not sure what is approved or not either, and i think the situation is stupid. They should have done a much better plan from the beginning (before Pirbadet was built). Because that old hurtigbåt-terminalen is beautiful, and should not be torn down. But Pirbadet was built next to it, and the edge of the new hotel will meet that buildings other side... That will make hurtigbåt-terminalen look very misplaces, an it will all look very misplaced and be a perfect example of poor planning.

^^I can't see the Brattøra ones now either, but I think I did last week:(

I've been having a lot of problems with photobucket lately, especially the quality issues. Was about to go to flickr, but then they fucked up everything last week when they banned skyscrapercity for 2 days (then they added a stupid flickr text beside every picture). Looks like i will go to tinypic, which i have been testing for a few months now. I have started uploading pics there, but it will take a while to move 15 000 photos...

Since Clarion Hotel was delayed by three years we now have to wait to its finished in 2012 before they can start construction on the plots between Rockheim and Tverrforbindelsen. All the parking space to Pirbadet and Pirterminalen was located on Clarion Hotel site, and the only place to move the parking temporary was of course to Brattørkaia.

Kinda funny, since Clarion Hotel was rejected in 2007, then redesigned, then rejected again, then the developer threatened to cancel the project, which gave the politicians such a headache they approved the original proposal! Three years for this gain: Clarion Hotel delayed, paying millions in worthless redesigns and planning, entire Brattørkaia delayed... yay!

So we just have to wait to they have made parkings!

Goddamn... useless politicians in this town obstructing development wherever and whenever they can! That being said, it still sounds weird that start construction of the Brattørkaia plots have to wait until the hotel is finished. Surely the parking garage will be completed long before the rest of the hotel, and surely there must anyway be other places to park if this is deemed absolutely necessary (which i think it doesn't ought to be). It's unbelievable if the reservation of the plot for a parking lot is what should put this construction on hold for 2 years.

I managed to get some close-up pictures of the windows from the inside (!). I must say it looks better looking out than i was afraid it would be. Still i am really
not satisfied with the facades look from the outside. The facade material should have been whiter, but the main issue remind with the windows, it certainly looked
much better on the renderings (http://img513.imageshack.us/img513/7514/brattrahotel6x1000.jpg). They should have been bigger, and probably they all should have had different forms. Not it pretty much looks like a hospital. And
of course, it would have been so much better if they built a higher building instead of this massive 8 stories blocks!

The windows are dreadful! And from what I can see, not in line with the architect renderings. They should have been like in one row for each floor. Now there's a row between the floors that's only grey. And the grey section between the rooms are to wide as well. This is a big mistake I think, and they ought to redo it. Surely, noone can think this looks good?? Neither from the inside or from the outside...

Of course it can be redone. All it takes is will and money. This case shows that somebody has not done their job properly, since the result is clearly totally different from the architect drawings. These drawings was what the authorities approved as well. Now, if I were CEO of Clarion, I simply would not accept that the entrepreneur constructs a totally different facade than what my architects made. Neither should the authorities.

Now, I know that there's no limit to the stupidity and the incompetence of the current socialistic administration in Trondheim, but I find it hard to believe that even they have overruled the facade design here.

Now that's some depressive shit. Who approved those windows? This must be one the worst examples of cheapning from the renders to real life I have ever seen.

The windows reminds of this building in Tokyo (only without the cool pixelated theme to it):

Well, nice to see that others share the same opinions. It brings up a interesting question though: Should the city accept redesign like that after the buildings are approved? Surely it's then no longer the same building they green lighted?

The answer to this question is to me very simple: NO! The developer (Clarion) should not accept it, and neither should the authorities. If one first is to have a slick glass curtain facade, why on earth would you want to have small, oval shaped windows? The windows were floor-to-ceiling type in the rendering, and this is what it should have been built like.

Nice job again Drondeimr! Now, that tall window to the right there, that's how ALL the windows/cladding on the hotel should've been. Even the short ends of the hotel buildings look better than the other face, because the windows are more continuous horisontally and give it some style.

To me is more about the whole picture: Each individual building may be okay or even good looking, but when you get more and more of these then you loose the historic feeling. And then it is better to let the architects decide the shape them self based on what looks good/fits the site.

Þróndeimr
December 27th, 2011, 09:58 PM
^^ its transparency will work better when the light are on inside. However, the main difference between the rendering and the final version is that they have cheapen down, or decided to redesign the windows in the last minute to make the building more energy-friendly i guess.

On the rendering the floors had windows from their floor to roof, while in the final version they made the windows smaller building the first 60cm from the floor and up in wood and the top 60cm in wood. This makes the exterior facades look very dull compared to the renderings.

Sjekk helder Aftenpostens Lotte Sandberg. http://www.aftenposten.no/kultur/anmeldelser/Utsyn-mot-fjellheimen-5014265.html#.T53iWLNXXjI

This is the Verdict The Hotel Got from The Twisted sister rock group and their Roadie tour reporter

"Dee also announced that the band TNT was playing at a local hotel (not sure of the name) but when he described it as “The Big Ugly One…..who designed it? A Blind man?” everyone seemed to know exactly which one he was referring to. I saw it. It was downright odd looking. Like a space ship that had crash landed. Into an ice palace."

I dont really have that much against the hotel myself its the best we could hope for when building a large central hotel in Trondheim, With crazy height restrictions.

I only think that the white facade should be Black would look much cooler in contrast to the gold. and the lobby turned out amazing much larger than the usual Norwegian hotel lobby.
