It is extremely beautiful! It has so many iconic buildings, but what really sets it apart is the eclecticness: you can find anything in London, any architecture you want - Roman, neoclassical, gothic, neo-gothic, Medieval, brutalist, ornamental, postmodern... all are not only present everywhere you look but have some kind of iconic building known all over the world built in their style, from St Paul's to Big Ben to the Gherkin. I don't see any Medieval Cathedrals in New York, glass supertalls in Paris, brutalist art galleries in Brussels or Rome, or neoclassical Imperial grandeur in Barcelona. Granted, London does not benefit from the natural scenery of Genoa or San Francisco, or the uniform neatness of Paris and San Fransisco, but that is exactly what makes it so good: all other cities are basically larger versions of a common style across their countries, but there is nowhere like London on earth, nowhere that compares in terms of wealth of history and contemporary native and global culture.

I think if the earth was to be destroyed by an asteroid and we only had the technology to move one city, it would have to be London: New York or Dubai do not have the history, Delhi and Istanbul do not have the global feel, Rome and Paris are not modern enough.

In terms of wonders however:

1. London (for the reasons just stated)
2. Paris (for the Eiffel tower if nothing else :P)
3. Rome (it's eternal)
4. New York (for obvious reasons)
5. Tokyo (can't miss out the biggest city in the world)
6. Rio de Janeiro (The most epic natural setting for a city in the world)
7. Dubai (The most epic manmade city in the world)

I have experienced London and I think it's pleasant, but a bit dull. Of course the Big Ben is astonishing but elsewhere ? Bricks...bricks and bricks. Paris is more stately and elegant !

Yes.... but, do most people even know those cities exist with the exception of Oslo and Helsinki?

I think, not in particular order

**NYC
***Rio De Janeiro
*Venice over Rome or both
*Paris
*London
*Istanbul
**Hong Kong

* These places have high historical value as cities, so I think it would be a no brainer for them to be in the top 7
** These cities were highly power and influential in the past century
*** Often voted as one of the most beautiful cities in the world

The US is not gonna have three entries, not even two.

Agreed. If we are talking about "wonders" then we must pick one-offs - places that offer something absolutely unique that's unavailable anywhere else.

On that basis, the obvious choices IMO are: NY, Venice and Rio. Sydney as well i think because of the magnificent harbor and the remarkable, perfect manner in which it combines nature with urbanity.

I feel like you also have to pick either London or Paris or both. They are two of the most beautiful, important and influential cities in the world. However, they are also similar in many ways and therefore one could argue that only one should make it in. If i were to pick one I would chose London because it is more international and has more architectural variety, but it's a tough call. Many would consider Paris the more beautiful city and more deserving to be considered a "wonder" on that basis.

I also picked Hong Kong because its spectacular skyline combined with the natural setting also creates a unique urban attraction.

So that's 7 right there. But there is probably at least a dozen other cities that have valid claims for uniqueness: Amsterdam, Florence, Tokyo, Vegas, Barcelona and several others.

Sarcasticity
December 25th, 2011, 03:18 AM
Now thinking about it, I think natural setting would weigh heavily in the criteria for the 7 wonder cities.

Then again, isn't this a voting system? People vote online for which they think is deserving. So I won't be surprised there will be some disappointing entries

My Top 7 and why:

Rio de Janeiro (#7): Rio, Rio, Rio. What can I say? The city exudes fun. From the carnivals that clog the city with sweaty torsos and the bronzed bodies bathing on the wide beaches, Rio is heaven on Earth. Even Christ thinks so, as he keeps watch over the city from Corcovado Mountain. Aside from this deeply Catholic population is a city that is more reminiscent of the Wild West. Favelas overflow with drugs and guns, Jungles full of exotic animals, rainbow-colored murals and supermodels playing volleyball on the soft sand. Rio is twice as dangerous as Los Angeles. Rio is twice as notorious as Las Vegas. Miami? Please. Not to mention that this paradise of a city will soon play host to the World Cup and Olympics. Rio defines the developing world at its best.

Rome (#6): All roads lead to Rome. The city that laid the foundation of Western Democracy is grander than Athens, larger than Jerusalem and older than Paris. It has more history than New York, London, Paris, and Tokyo in its pinky. It was the pinnacle of human achievement and its power at one point stretched from the Southern tip of Scotland to far into the Middle East. Today Rome is the seat (technically it's the Vatican enclave) of the Roman Catholic Church, the most powerful branch of Christianity and one which has the loyalties of 1/6 of the world's population. Colosseum, Circus Maximus, Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain, pizza, lasagna, gelato, and more. Rome is a feast of the senses.

Hong Kong (#5): Neither a capital nor a historical giant, Hong Kong was merely a colonial backwater more than a century ago. But in the 21st Century Hong Kong is a dizzying labyrinth of supertalls and glitzy hotels. A place where homemade Peking duck meets Billionaire businessman. A city that has the financial and economic might to hold its own currency and battle with Shanghai for the title of China's economic hub. Hong Kong is a place where western architecture hits feng shui, a place where British democracy meets Buddhist temple incense. A place where even a ride on the Star Ferry gives you culture shock. It's also a city that will increasingly play a role in 21st century China. If this is China's Century, then Hong Kong is even bet to rise up in the ranks.

Paris (#4): The Fashion and Arts capitol of the world. A large repository of philosophy, scientists, artisans, and thinkers. The power of one of the world's most powerful nations. A huge business center where beauty trumps growth and history is around every corner. A place where gold-domed mausoleums are just one in a dozen. A place where literature and gastronomy are sacred rituals. A place where the Emperors of Europe once envied and modeled their towns after. A place where even the beggars know their furs and jewelry. Eiffel Tower, Versailles, Les Invalides, Louvre, Notre Dame. Paris may be snooty and crass. But can you blame her?

Tokyo (#3): The largest metropolis in the world approaching 37 million, or more than Canada and Australia. The city with the world's biggest GDP. A lab of scientific innovation, hard work, social cohesion and proud tradition. The city that created anime and video games and set Japan on the world's cultural stage. The city that built an empire that at one point controlled vast lands from Manchuria to Malaya and the South Pacific. An enigmatic powerhouse of a city where blue haired girls on kimonos ride motorcycles through massive highways and the Tsukiji Fish Market is more lively than other entire Asian capitals. Tokyo is grand, bustling and the world's portal to the future.

London (#2): A Financial Mecca, Seat of the largest empire ever created from Canada to India and further; diverse, trendy, gritty and an industrial powerhouse. The Big Ben, Tower of London, Buckingham Palace, London Bridge. Yeah, London is ugly. It's full of boring buildings and the country's vestiges of global power are dwindling by the day. Paris is more beautiful, New York is bigger, and Tokyo has more economic power. But London encompasses a history that is unrivaled in the modern world. Paris for centuries has tried to trump London and failed (look at who's hosting the 2012 Olympics). New York was a mere pygmy when London ruled the seas and dismantled foes from Canada to the Ganges, from New Zealand to Africa. London is the world's preferred financial hub, even trumping Hong Kong and Singapore to this day. London's museums showcase jewels and treasures from every imaginable corner of the earth. More importantly, London's spirit helped shape the Industrial Revolution and catapulted England far above France and Austria-Hungary and all those 18th century posers. London held its own against massive Blitzkriegs from Hitler; it has decimated the Spanish navy; it has controlled the fate of billions of people around the world and even today controls more colonies than America or France or Russia or any other nation in fact. London is ugly. But what's beauty without power?

New York (#1): Financial Mecca and key business hub of the world's foremost power. Seat of the UN, Cultural and Social Importance, History, Industrial Powerhouse, Landmarks Galore, Diverse beyond belief. Hip, Fresh, Liberal and Tough. Statue of Liberty, Wall Street, Empire State Building, Grand Central Terminal, Central Park. New York's first skyscrapers were once the symbol of American growth and strength. New York's ports once attracted the greatest minds from European nations. Its promise of opportunity, freedom and riches attracted peasants and princes alike. Its buildings are a kaleidoscope of the world, with ghettos and neighborhoods each showcasing a bountiful history of immigrants. New York is a city that doesn't aspire to be Paris, or London. It never wanted to be Saint Petersburg. New York scoffs at imperial pomp and political braggadocio. New York is the cool kid on the block; hardworking, rough, proud and determined. Sorry London, New York is king of the world.

#8-10:
Vienna (#8): Yeah, Vienna. A small metropolis with 2.5 million people. It's the capital of a country of 8 million. It's a calm city on the surface. It seems like one of those cities your grandparents want to visit to learn the craft of effective German chicken dancing. But Vienna is much more. Vienna is a small treasure chest. Behind a quiet veneer lies a city with a wonderful history. Vienna at one point was the most powerful Imperial Capitals. It was the seat of countless Hapsburgs and until 1914 was the center of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. This is evident in its buildings. Vienna is full of intricate museums and galleries. Church steeples convey the opulent grandeur of this gorgeous city. The gilded buildings and pastel palaces only give a small glimpse into the royal power this city once had. And now Vienna is on an upswing. Its clubs and bars strive to beat Berlin's. Its scientists and educated population are the envy of many other nations. Its monuments and architectural wonders delight tourists and the city has the kind and friendly nature that Paris could never even fake. Vienna is a place where you can drink a beer in the morning, gaze at priceless paintings at noon, snooze at a large park for the afternoon, listen to the world's best orchestra at night and party till sunrise in a seedy club full of hipsters, druggies, and trannies. It's both gritty and eloquent. It's monumental and shy. It's a grandma's paradise and her son's paradise as well. It's just as risqué as Amsterdam, just as grand as Berlin, it's just as beautiful as Venice. Vienna is Central Europe's premier city. Prague is Disneyland these days. Berlin is buzzing but lacks a certain air of wonder about it. Vienna has turds more beautiful than Bratislava and Budapest is the ugly stepsister.

Istanbul (#9): The place where the west meets the east, you know the usual. But Istanbul is much more than just the crossroads it's usually stereotyped as. Istanbul, and its previous incarnations, has been a city that seems more fitting in a mythical fable. A city that one point trumped Rome and commanded a vast number of Muslim peoples deserves no small praise. Istanbul is a cultural gem. From the turquoise hue of the Bosporus to the bedazzling minarets of Hagia Sophia, Istanbul is the Muslim world at its grandest. Mecca is a kitschy tourist hub compared to Istanbul, Cairo is a chaotic mess compared to Istanbul. Tehran has less glory than Gokcen International Airport. To ignore Istanbul while noting Rome is an injustice. Istanbul is more immerse, bigger, and has a better future coming than Rome. Istanbul's narrow alleys and rusty trams blend easily into its glorious palaces and watchtowers. Istanbul's high-rise construction trumps London's and rivals Moscow's. If Istanbul is the future of Islam, then it's time to convert.

Singapore (#10): Yes, Singapore. Singapore is a wonder. Singapore isn't as hectic as New York or London. It's smaller than Hong Kong. Tokyo has suburbs almost as big as Singapore. And at the same time Singapore has managed the impossible. It's a perfect city. Growth is inevitable, cleanliness is next to godliness, and democracy blends neatly with a strong state. Singapore is becoming the hub of Southeast Asia, with its potential 600 million persons strong market. Singapore's ports see more goods than even the busiest in Europe and America. Its people are a peaceful mix of Chinese, Malays and Indians. Its architecture a neat blend of colonial and modern and Eastern. Its malls and gleaming skyscrapers demand attention and at night the city looks like a glistening gem. That's why Britain at one point almost gave priority to defending Singapore from the Japanese over assaulting the Germans. Singapore is a successful paradox, and the future for this city-state never looked so good.

i think a bit after my previous 7 .. and need to change it . not only the architecure of the cities but i also consider the unique things of the cities making them wonders. its not the most beautiful or the best city live but humanitys wonders...

no order...

Istanbul... The Persian name was Dersaadet—Door to the Ultimate Happiness. The Greeks called it Teofilaktos—City Guarded by God; the Romans, Nuova Roma—New Rome; the Arabs, Farrouk—City Separating Two Continents; and the Ottoman Turks, Ummti-diinya—Mother of the World. Now, and since 1923 when the Turkish Republic formally renamed it, it is called Istanbul, meaning just The City—as though there were none other to compare.

Rome...Rome: The Eternal City…and for those who have visited her, unquestionably the most magnificent city in the world. Like the memory of a lost love, she will haunt you, stealing your senses one by one and hastening your return. For those who have not yet experienced her magic, the thrill awaits…

http://www.aasgaard.com/home/00-scans/rome/collesium.jpg

Rio...Geography and Climate: Rio de Janeiro, a cidade maravilhosa, is just that - one of the world's most marvellous cities, a marvelous city. Sandwiched between the South Atlantic surf and the dramatic mountains of the Costa Verde, Rio is blessed with a stunning setting.

http://www.topnews.in/files/Rio-de-Janeiro.jpg

NYC... architectural beauty--Manhattan's stunning skyline, historic buildings contrasted by modern structures.. Babylon of our age..and the peak of american dream

http://www.visitingdc.com/images/statue-of-liberty-new-york.jpg

Paris..city of lights, lovers... french revolution.. Liberté, égalité, fraternité, opening a new age in human history french cuisine and macarons are extra :)

http://imagecache2.allposters.com/images/PTGPOD/849725.jpg

Jerusalem...Jerusalem - a city that exists for more than three thousand years. On ancient maps Jerusalem depicted as the center of the world. It is a sacred city for devotees of three great world religions

http://www.sacredsites.com/middle_east/israel/images/jerusalem-panorama-500.jpg

St. Petersburg...If you are museum type, it is your mecca.. russian revolution a new metropolis build with extra beauty, russian empire and the revolution the first steps of USSR and dividing the world into 2.. ( i cnfused moscow or St petersburg but Hermitage makes me choose St.:) )

Love that you have my 3 American cities! Someone previously said America wouldn't deserve even two. I think they're so beautiful and unique that they deserve to be listed! As do the rest!

no, i didnt say America didnt deserve two entries. I'd like to see NYC, Chicago and San Fran in there but 7 entries for the entire world, I wouldn't hold my breath. I'd be satisfied as long as NYC is there

My votes:

Chicago - The city that gave the world skyscrapers certainly should be on the list, not to mention reversing its own river.

Rio de Janeiro - setting

Venice - the unique, middle of the lagoon setting

Istanbul - a major world center for 2,000 years

Mecca - the center of a billion-strong religion, and the epitome of a holy city

Dubai - the building boom of the past decade

Paris - the famous atmosphere of the City of Lights and Love

The fact that in the new7wonders of Nature, the Great Barrier Reef and the Grand Canyon weren't in the top 7 but Jeju Island and the Puerto Princesa Underground River were, just makes me lose faith in this contest that deserving (well, imo) cities like NYC, Paris, Rio etc won't make it since votes are tallied online and thru text

I think the cities should have something that sets them truly apart from other cities, which I don't think is true for a lot of cities people are listing. Sure, they're important and big and all that, but what makes them fundamentally *unique*?

Personally I think Amsterdam should be included for instance because it is perhaps the earliest modern-example of a planned city (its canalbelt) and because despite attempts by conservative elements, the city remains the defacto world-standard for 'liberal progressive city'.

Las Vegas for instance might be an American city included because it is fundamentally different from most other american cities whereas I don't see why you would have New York or Chicago on it despite both being fantastic cities.

Anyway, my two cents

Then again you ask yourself, what makes Las Vegas different from Macau or Atlantic City or Reno?

Why people include NYC or Chicago? I guess the fact that these cities were in the forefront the last century, the homes of the first skyscrapers in the world, beautiful harbors, architecture, etc. I would rather question why people would list Shanghai or Dubai, to be speaking frankly, they haven't been noticed only until recently (just my 2 cents)

Well, IMHO having lived in Wiesbaden, Germany 6 years, and having travelled to Paris at least 20 times. I believe it is the most overrated city I've been to. Not to say it isn't beautiful, but not worth the hype it's gotten. There are much greater cities in Europe, such as Budapest, Koln, Heidelberg, etc. that don't receive half the hype of Paris, but are much nicer.

Most big german cities are boring with modern architecture and kebab-parlors in each corner. Look at Cologne, Mannheim, Munich, especially in the area where you find the central railway station. It's good that you can find cheap hotels and eat kebab for 3$ which is impossible in Paris.

Still Paris is the most elegant city in the world, been there twice and could go there much more and never get bored, so much to see, all the museums, the seine, the international atmosfear and the well dressed people. No baggy t-shirts and sneakers except on the tourists.

I still think it's overrated. I just don't think it lives up to the hype. But maybe I've been there so much that the shine has really worn away. The only place I really like in France in Mont-Saint-Michelle. I think that place is absolutely amazing, and one of the 7 medieval wonders of the world indefinitely. But the rest of France to me is just underwhelming. I remember as a kid, it became tradition that every time we drove into Paris the first person to see the Eiffel tower got $1. I got probably $10 by the end haha.

Granted, I haven't been to Paris in 5 years, so a lot might have changed. I don't deny that it is an amazing city, I just don't think it's as great as a lot of cities to the East. Also, to be fair I don't like Portugal or Spain either. I'm a sucker for Vienna, Prague, Copenhagen, Brussels, Frankfurt, Dusseldorf, Munich, and especially BUDAPEST!

Interesting perspective. I think that Budapest and especially Prague are two of the most overrated cities in Europe. Although both are very beautiful, Budapest was probably the slowest of any city with a population of 1m+ that I have ever been to in Europe. And Prague looked like a city entirely dedicated to tourism and culturally still stuck in the 80s.

I don't think Budapest is overrated! Then again, my whole family on my mother's side is from 30 km north of Budapest, so I'm a bit biased. It's my second home practically. But I almost thought it was underrated, not many Americans know what it is, and most Europeans I talk to haven't ever been there. And I agree to some extent about Prague.

I think the reason I don't like Paris to a large extent, is that it feels like a city that is faking it's culture at this point for the sake of tourism. With all the immigrants from Africa and Southeast Asia, and even other parts of Europe, I don't feel Paris is truly "French" anymore, at least no more than NYC is truly "american." Only difference is NYC was never meant to be American, while Paris is supposed to be the headquarters of French culture, which I think it has lost. All of Paris almost feels like Little Italy to me, in that little italy used to be Italian immigrants, and has since been replaced with other immigrants and only the shell is still the same. Indeed, the landmarks of Paris are amazing, but the culture seems to lack in authenticity.

While cities like Budapest and Amsterdam have been able to retain their true cultures even with the huge tourism base.

I suspect that there is still a lot for you to see and experience in Paris. Over the years (probably way before you were born?) I have gotten used to how things "run" over there, so perhaps my perspective would be different. 3 months is really not enough. I visit multiple times every year, and I always find something changing, something new. It is a popular myth: that Paris is unchanged/unchanging.

I like Vienna very much. The size is very manageable, the core is beautiful (it is, after all, an Imperial city),and the people are friendly. As in Paris, I have also accumulated a lot of Viennese friends over the years, and it is through them (as in Paris) that I get to experience the life of the city.

Perhaps it requires a sympathetic eye to see that authenticity that you search for. Paris is not just the physical city. It is a city of memory, and an evocation of some of the best things in European culture overall.

Paris is huge and filled with history. I could spend a lifetime there exploring all the museums, just to see all the paintings in the Louvre takes about a month.

Also want to visit the church with the tomb of Napoleon.

One of your favourite cities is Copenhagen :) I've been there a zillion times since the 70's and thats really a city I'm fed up with, but for first time visitors it's probably a sensation.

To say that a city does not deserve its reputation is to say that it has fallen short od some expectations aroused. Whether a verdict is subjective or objective, it still is based upon disappointed expectations, and I am simply asking you to give us examples of the expectations that you had in the case of Paris.

Seeing your extremely young age, it is natural/expected that you lack the refinement and sophistication to appreciate what a city such as Paris has to offer.

Such is the nature of things. But it is a pity, nonetheless.

P.S. And I would not discount LA so easily, if I were you. Its allure is not for everyone (and I admit that a lot of it is not for me), but of a certain allure and urbanity is does have, and in abundance.

This thread is about new wonders.

And this thread is about cities

So there is nothing saying that beauty should be the criterion.

Here's my list of the "New 7 Wonders Cities"; recent urban wonders:

1. Guangzhou - Shenzhen: The world's most populous urban area ('city') and the 21st Century's fastest growing major city

2. Tokyo: The only dense mass of humanity of this enormous magnitude that has survived so many natural calamities and still remains among the world's most prosperous cities and the world's second-most-populous.

3. New York City: The world's first mega-city (over 10 million population), this is arguably the world's greatest (architectural magnitude and diversity of urban trends) and most sprawling urban area in the world.

4. Sao Paulo: Its extended urban area, containing the world's second-largest (after Guangzhou - Shenzhen) collection of high-rises, is one of the world's biggest and most-populous mega-urban wonders.

5. Delhi: The planet's oldest continuously inhabited national capital city (since the second millenium BC) and one of the world's most-populous urban areas today.

6. Jakarta: The world's third-most-populous urban area, with the planet's second-highest urban population growth in the past decade.

7. Shanghai: The home of the world's biggest skyscraper boom, in terms of building magnitude and futuristic architecture.

I agree with Royal Rose. Paris is nice, but I wasn't left wanting more, and it didn't really live up to my expectations (which weren't that high to begin with). London, New York, it was love at first sight and remains that way to this day. That said, Paris is still a beautiful city, just not the kind of beautiful I like.

Thank you! Exactly how I feel. I used to think New York City was overrated too! I remember the first 5 times I went there, it didn't really do much for me. Then my mother moved there, and I got to know the city, now I think it's underrated, there's truly so much to see there. When you live in NYC it's like nothing else exists, because NYC is truly it's own world.

Beijing is my choice!

Beijing has 6 world heritages by UNESCO, which city has more???????
The great wall of China
The forbidden city
Archaeological site of Zhoukoudian
Beijing Heaven temple
Beijing Summer palace
Ming &Qing Dynasty Tombs of Beijing

Besides, Beijing has a lot of modern wonders too
The bird nest, CCTV tower, the Grand national theatre etc.

Ummmmm... New York City not one of the cities on this list? I'm sorry, but if there was a list of one wonder of the world city it would be NYC. NYC is in an area on its own, to say NYC is undeserving of 1 of 7 of the Wonders of the world is heinous.

1/ Roma - wonder city of eternity
2/ Paris - wonder city of the XIX Century
3/ New York - wonder city of XX Century
4/ Istanbul - mostly because of it's golden age under the name Constantinople
5/ Prague - Wonder city of medieval age.
6/ Venice - wonder city of flooding and what ever like it.
7/ Dubai - wonder city of the XXI Century

note: I feel so bad when most Asian cities just destroy the old and replace them with new stuffs. If they kept the old stuffs intact I would have picked the old Beijing, Wuhan and Kyoto instead

Kyoto still a has a lot of the old "stuff", even though much more was destroyed or burned down in the past thousand years. But what is left from earlier periods is beautiful -- in spite of the tourists. Any civilized person who has some appreciation for Japanese arts and letters cannot help but be moved. It's like Cavafy's mythical Alexandria, or Proust's Paris. Just mentioning the names of places and peoples long gone and/or altered would be enough to fill you with wonder.

Iloilo City (Philippines)
Legazpi City (Philippines)
Marikina City (Philippines)

Makati, Marikina, Parañaque, Quezon City and Taguig should be questioned since these cities are under Manila and Manila itself represents these cities.

This is also the same for Kowloon since it is part of HK's SAR.

The fact Beverly Hills, Brooklyn, Long Beach or Shibuya were not listed individually?

:) In all fairness, the reason Jakarta is put as a recent urban wonder is because its urban area (Jabodetabek) has witnessed the the planet's second-highest urban population growth in the past 10 years- about 10 million people in 10 years... around a million people each year! It's also the world's third-most-populous urban area today.
That's an urban wonder!

And regarding Jakarta's infrastructure; it has South-East Asia's most extensive road network and most extensive public transit network.
It's compared to Los Angeles in this regard, especially in South-East Asia.
Let's take a peek:

We all have our own choices. One thing I noticed is that, your choices are based on urban area / population. Ironically, you excluded Manila which is one of the largest and densest cities in the world and is still rapidly growing.

But population growth is not an important factor for nomination but also the city's position in a global scale.

This includes, economy, culture, politics, trade, etc. We cannot doubt that Jakarta is one of the major economic centres of South East Asia and is also the political and to some extent, cultural hub of Indonesia.

On the other hand, Shenzhen's urban growth and development is also LARGE. You can compare the city as it is today to how it was back in the 20th century.

But Shenzhen's global position is not as high unlike it's neighbour south of the border.

I would place Manila's metropolitan area as the 8th recent urban wonder.Hong Kong was a "recent urban wonder / phenomenon" in the second half of the 20th Century. The Guangzhou - Shenzhen urban area is the 21st Century's "recent urban wonder / phenomenon".However, you're correct; each person has his own perspective of what a recent urban wonder denotes.

NASA engineers were sent to the Brazilian savannah to evaluate a site that would resemble a future colonization of Mars. A beautiful microcosm like none other in the planet. Massive tract housing, soviet style social blocks, leafy high end neighbourhoods and destitute squatter settlements converge to make cities the huge mix of social disparities that they are known for. Sure, we have disgusting and putrid rivers rendered lifeless because of unsupervised contamination but it is the very nature of this dirtiness we live in that makes us a determined people to overcome these setbacks to make our people believe in a fighting chance that their children will have a cleaner and more prosperous future than they did. I am convinced that tourists and visitors from the developed nations find our poverty to be alarming and unacceptable but it is the spirit of our people that they simply cannot forget that always brings them coming back. It is not something to be proud of our social tensions and horrid urban planning but it sure is something to remember and fight for.

Yes, I see that as being prevalent in many threads of this sub-forum.
Members nominate according to their national identity; nominations for 'most beautiful cities', 'most livable cities' etc.

European members nominate European cities, South American members nominate South American cities, North American members nominate North American cities, and so on.

I see a remarkable lack of objectivity and internationalism in so many of the posts; could it then be just national identity or something larger, such as media-created prejudice towards other parts of the world?

It would be the same with the people who nominated / voted for the new 7 wonders.

I'm still looking forward to the finalist. Though I nominated Manila as part of my 7 since it is my hometown and it is a vibrant city.

It's shocking that someone can actually put Indian and Chinese cities on the nomination list. I'm pasting my list again. These cities are most deserving of the recognition as being "wonder cities", All of them share the commonality of having world class architecture, rich histories, comfortable climates, and distinctive geographic locations. The 7 wonder cities don't have to be centers for banking and finance or anything of business nature. Most importantly, large cities with crowded populations and large income gaps in the population absolutely do not belong in the nomination list.

1) Paris, France (oceanic climate)
2) Rome, Italy (hot summer Mediterranean)
3) Anchorage, USA (subarctic)
4) Vienna, Austria (oceanic)

little universe, I'd like to point out some major errors in this article:-

(1) Chengdu's metropolitan area contains 7,123,697 people in 2129 sq km.
The remaining 6,923,928 people in 10,003 sq km that live in Chengdu 'city' are actually rural residents. The 'city' administrative limit is akin to 'state' in the USA and is not equivalent to a city as we know it. That does not qualify Chengdu as a mega-city yet; however, Chengdu will quite likely become a mega-city in 20 years.

reference: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chengdu

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chengdu...tive_Divisions (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chengdu#Administrative_Divisions)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of..._by_population (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_cities_in_the_People%27s_Republic_of_China_by_population)

(2) Based on this common misunderstanding about what a 'city' means in China, the concept of "221 cities containing over a million people and 23 cities containing over 5 million" is a huge exaggeration, even for me, where I am sometimes jocularly accused of being too liberal with metropolitan areas! :)
There are 95 urban areas today (references above) that contain over a million people in China. 140 million-plus urban areas seems more realistic by 2031.

(3) In India, as per the 2011 Census, the number of urban areas containing over a million people increased from 35 (in the year 2001) to 53 (in the year 2011); an increase of over 51% in just 10 years! Even by conservative estimates, assuming growth slows down by over 25%, there will be at least 68 urban areas (or more likely, more) containing over a million people by 2021. By 2031, we could be looking at close to 90 (or more) million-plus urban areas. Let's remember the population growth of all major Indian cities' cores is either declining or showing minimal increase, while their metropolitan areas are still burgeoning.
In addition, as per the 2011 Census, 2774 brand-new towns were created in India in the past 10 years!! These towns have formed either as erstwhile villages that merged into urban centers or as newly created centres of industry, education, services etc.
The past decade witnessed de-centralized urban growth in India on epic proportions.

reference: http://makanaka.wordpress.com/2011/0...turning-point/ (http://makanaka.wordpress.com/2011/04/01/indias-2011-census-a-population-turning-point/)

The gap or difference between the urbanization in China and India is not as large as many people believe. China's authoritarian Government has enforced urban policy as well restricted flow of their citizens via Hukou, and have, as a result, created world-class urban areas.
China's GDP (PPP) per capita is over twice that of India's.
However, poverty exists on a massive scale in rural China and the non-registered urban residents.
India, being a huge and diverse democracy, faces continuous hurdles in its urban policy implementation from private residents, non-governmental groups, religious groups, environmentalists etc.

(4) "The World's Top 5 cities by population" list provided is not to be taken seriously; Delhi's urban area (21.7 million) is already more populous than Mumbai's (20.7 million) as per the 2011 Census. Also, the urban areas of Jakarta and Manila will continue to be larger than Shanghai and Beijing, even in the next 20 years, unless Hukou is abolished, and we start looking at them as Yangtze River Delta and Bohai Economic Rim respectively.

Again, Chongqing urban area contains 5.4 million people; it is not currently a mega-city.

(5) Many 10 million-plus urban areas are missing in the 'current mega-cities' list, such as:-
Guangzhou, Jakarta, Seoul, Shenzhen, Tehran, Bangkok etc.

By 2025, the number of 10-million-plus urban areas will probably be 65 and not 36 as mentioned in the article. We already have 38 as you can see in this thread's first post.

Both Mumbai's GDP prediction and Kinshasa's projected population seem credible.

There are just too many cities to choose from. But this time I'm going to re-nominate my cities and with proper thinking.

Here are my nominations and my reason what makes these cities, a wonder.

1) New York City

The Big Apple, centre of culture, commerce, trade and entertainment in The United States and perhaps, the world. America is a nation of immigrants and most of them entered through New York especially those coming from Europe. To these immigrants, NY symbolized the American Dream and a city of great opportunities. It is a city that went through success and hardships but manage to pull through and become as powerful and as well known as it is today.

2) Mecca

Known as the holiest city of Islam and birthplace to The Prophet Muhammed. Given the chance, Muslims from around the world will make a pilgrimage to the city and perform their duties on their faith. This is better known as The Hajj and The Umrah. What makes this place a wonder is that only Muslims are allowed to enter Mecca which makes its mysterious to people around the world especially Non-Muslims. There are even Non-Muslims that will pretend to be one just to enter the city and witness the Hajj itself.

3) Tokyo

If there is one city that deserves to be called "Asia's World City, that would be Tokyo. Originally a seaside trading town, it became the capital of Japan back in 1968. The city suffered during The Great Kanto Earthquake and heavy bombings during WW-II. But with Japanese discipline and customs, the city was rebuilt and is now the largest metropolitan area in the world and a centre of commerce, politics, culture, trade and entertainment in both Japan and Asia.

4) Curitiba

It was once the capital of Brazil and one of the best planned cities. It has became a model to the world when it comes to transport, infrastructure and environmental planning.

5) Singapore

Once a haven for pirates and smugglers, Singapore reorganized itself through the leadership of Lee Kwan Yew and with proper governance, laws, urban planning and infrastructure, has created stability, utopia and an economic power in South East Asia especially among it's citizens.

6) Havana

Despite strong communist rule, it's residents preserved the city's vibrancy and culture even if the scene was less compared to the pre-Castro years.

7) Hong Kong

Being a former British colony and the influx of immigrants from Shanghai after WW-II made HK to the position as it is today, a centre of commerce, trade, culture and entertainment in The Far East. It is a city where natural settings and urbanity in such limited land, yet provide its residents every aspect in life from work, to entertainment, etc.

1)Europe - Paris: It is the epitome of the architectural grandiose, the city of lights takes the cake when it comes to historical man-made beauty.

2)N.America - New York City: The place is a high-rise marvel that has been evolving since "going up" began. Perhaps the most iconic of the global mega cities (Tokyo/London/NYC) with a lot of history (relative to North America).

3)Asia - Dubai: It is the epitome of modern experimentalism and tall-gone-mad. It may not have tremendous history, but it's a modern, mega-project petri dish.

4)S.America - Rio de Janeiro: Most beautiful and scenic city in S.America with one hell of an urban geography/topography. One may also argue for Buenos Aires for architectural value??

5)Europe - Rome:It is the eternal city, truly awe-inspiring... the capital of the largest ancient empire, need I say more.

6)Africa - Cape Town: Table Mountain is already a new natural wonder of the world. The city is unparalleled on the continent for scenic location, rich cultural diversity, sophistication and modernity.

7)Australia - Sydney:Probably Oceania's most beautiful city and probably of the prettiest ports in the world. One could perhaps argue for Vancouver/San Francisco/Hong Kong, but for continental diversity and habour glory, decided the most fair choice was the city of the opera house and harbour bridge.

Tried to compile a list that reflects continental diversity, as well as history versus modernity and scenery versus the man-made.

I read in Wikipedia that was the capital of Brazil for a very short period. From March 24 up to the 27th.

It must have been the shortest capital. But nevertheless, Curitiba is the best planned Brazilian city ever that it became a role model for other cities worldwide.

Good God!!

Who in their right mind would ever think of excluding London from such a list??

Wouldn't like to live your world if you have.

How boring would they be.

More stuff goes off in London than anywhere else. Those who call it ugly clearly have never been. Also they may forget the Blitz. The city is the perfect tonic of architecture. If you are ever lucky enough to visit you would know this.

I remember once I walked around for a whole day in 30c heat, entered not one single building except a pub where I had the most gorgeous burger and pint ever. Sat outside with a smoke and watched the people of the most vibrant and creative city do their normal things.

The reason I had no need to enter one single building bar a pub for some food was because every corner you turn there is a picture opportunity. A famous place. A famous icon you have seen on tv or in a movie or read in a book.

No place on this earth compares to London.

London is the Las Vegas of major cities - Vegas try's to fit every major cities architetural gems into it's desert.

London has every type of architecture imaginable and it works frigging stupendously.

From the buskers, to the newspapers, magazine gossip, the humour, the red buses, the taxi's, the landmarks, everything.

It is so hard to express in words just how unrivalled it is in the world.

It's importance is without question.

New York may look bigger with it's skyline but the real gritty stuff.

Na huh.

London is the soul of this earth. London is the earth's Son. London was made to rule, and rule it has.

Sport, Media, Entertainment, Fashion, Movies, Music, News - London rules the roost.

That's why it is still the hub of the world and the favoured destination for the rich and famous.

New York, London and Paris have the best chance of making it!

New York City & Paris for ESB & Eiffel. yes. point take.

NOT London

before London, Cairo has much much better thance of making it due to Pyramids & Sphinx at Giza

be realistic.

& even Agra because of Taj Mahal.

Why are people voting for New York? It's a GREAT city but it's not a 'wonder city'.

Surely places like Constantine in Algeria, Suzhou in China, Venice in Italy and Shibam in Yemen are more worthy cities?

Istanbul deserves to be on the list. It has been the capital of empires, the junction between East and West, and a dynamic melting pot of cultures.

New York is a massive city with a lot of skyscrapers. If it deserves to be on the list, then so does every other big city with a lot of towers.

Shibam in Yemen, the first skyscraper city.

London: for obvious reasons. The only thing it lacks is a spectacular setting, it has history, iconic-ness, size, skyscrapers, and more than anything else, variety. Where else in the world could you find roman, medieval, renaissance, victorian and modern landmarks, and that's just the well known ones, not mentioning the largest traditional Indian Hindu temple outside India and other unknown marvels around every corner.

New York: couldn't really leave out an American city, since America is the carrying on of the British Empire, the British Byzantium. It was also the founder of the skyscraper city.

Rio de Janeiro: most spectacular setting for a city, and also because I had to have some sort of Latin city.

Tokyo: largest city in the world, and generally awesome

Venice: most beautiful city, since it lacks any of the horrible suburbs, and is more or less completely architecturally pure, excepting the small port area.

Rome: two Italian cities is pushing it I know, but anyone who has been there will understand, there is no city that compares to it except maybe Jerusalem and Cairo.

Delhi: there had to be an Indian city too. India is totally unique, for good or ill.

for me

Just missing out: Cairo - not very exciting these days, revolutions aside.
Paris: too similar to London in terms of history etc, and being a Londoner myself, the choice was obvious.
Chinese cities: Beijing, Hong Kong, Shanghai... I couldn't choose one, so I chose none.

I like old cities like York, Sana'a, Florence etc, but I decided to only allow one small city, and Venice had it due to the location.

Venezia is the "City of water" par excellence!
Being classified as "Venice of..." is already an honour for a city.

Manila is a global city, not a wonder city. And there are global cities around the world that I do not even consider a wonder like Seoul or Stockholm for example.

I have said this before but the one thing I noticed with The New 7 Wonders and that I'm concerned of is nomination of Philippine cities within Metro Manila say Parañaque. It is still part of Manila and in fact it should not be included in the list. Manila alone represent all cities within Metro Manila and should be as one and not divided.

On the other hand, Shibam in Yemen is not a global city but it is a wonder to the the fact it has created a unique skyline, an ancient one.

Rome - the cityscape is very reminiscent of the Roman Empire.

Istanbul - Hagia Sophia dominates the skyline of the former Constantinople.

London - for me the greatest city on earth.

Paris - nothing much but the monuments are wonders.

New York - industrial revolution age skyscrapers are wonderful.

Not but we support our landmarks and natural attractions.

And I agree that The Puerto Princesa Underground River deserved to be part of the New 7 Wonders of Nature the fact I voted for it as well as the millions of Pinoys who voted online.

But The New 7 Wonders Cities is a different ball game. I actually nominated 1 city from The Philippines which is Manila.

HK is currently no.3 and is listed in North Asia and The Pacific.

I'm Filipino myself and I do not agree with the ranking of our cities. Just like Cebu which currently has the top spot in South East Asia / Oceania. Yes it has a rich history, culture, landscapes, etc.

But the question is, what makes Cebu a wonder city?

I have experienced London and I think it's pleasant, but a bit dull. Of course the Big Ben is astonishing but elsewhere ? Bricks...bricks and bricks. Paris is more stately and elegant !

Paris (like Washington DC) was laid out as a planned city with boulevards & all.

By contrast, London (like NYC) was a spontaneous byproduct of commerce, entrepruenurship & mercantlism.

Venice: for obvious reasons
London: The greatest city on earth, in my biased opinion. Nowhere else embodies history, diversity, globalisation and majestic splendour more than the Capital of history's greatest empire. And though the Empire may have gone, London has only improved, and indeed is one of the few cities in Europe set to get better as time goes on.
Paris: The most visited city in the world, and probably the most beautiful megacity.
New York: Again, for obvious reasons. Joint best city in the world with London, from what I've heard, though it is not a capital and doesn't have the elegance and splendour of Europe though it outdoes it tenfold in scale.
Tokyo: world's largest city
Shanghai: highest density of highrises in the world.
Rio De Janeiro: most extraordinary natural setting of any city in the world, if not indeed one of the most beautiful sights even without the city.

HK can rival Rio when it comes to natural setting.

Paris no doubt is beautiful but most within the city centre. But once you are in suburbs like Clichy Sous Bois, it is another story.
