SINGAPORE

Despite being a majority-Chinese city, a Chinatown exists here for historical reasons, and is today a restored conservation area located just beside the skyscrapers of the CBD. A very contrasting scene indeed.

Melaka Town, Chinatown.
I think it is Malaysia's 2nd largest Chinatown after the one in Penang.

baqthier, that 1st pic you posted looks a lot like the Singapore one!

yes, since the last time you came, the Chinatown has become livelier as more businesses and food stalls have set up in there. I even walked inside that Indian temple

@nazrey, nice pics! I had some nice sharksfin soup at Bangkok Chinatown once

The Chinatown in Manila is ugly in my opinion.. Crowded, old, dusty and crowded.Mostly temples and businesses owned by rich Chinese-Filipinos who don't even live there. What's unique though is that Spanish-influenced buildings stand a line with Chinese monuments and residential highrises. Sadly, I don't have any pictures. The district is called Binondo, already famous in Spanish colonial times, known as a haven for Chinese immigrants and craftsmen.

Newer Chinatowns in cities like Los Angeles & Houston (where I live) are much nicer because they were built/formed by mostly newer immigrants from Taiwan (some HK and some mainland) during the late 70's and early 80's, as opposed to the older Chinatowns in cities like New York & San Francisco which were built/formed by mostly poor immigrants from Guangdong province during the late 1800's early 1900's.

For LA, i think you're referring to Monterrey Park-Alhambra area. not the real Chinatown in Downtown, which is similar to other countries' Chinatown.
But most Chinese people in Alhambra area are HK and Mainland people though. Most Taiwanese are in Roland Height-Daimond Bar area.;)

Calcutta (Kolkata) used to have a thriving China Town. But most younger Chinese have emigrated to Australia, Canada and the USA. However one of their biggest contributions to Calcutta is Chinese food ala Kolkata style. The Chinese food of Calcutta is the best that I have ever had! Okay I am biased. But anywhere I eat Chinese food, I long for Calcutta Chinese food. It is sooooooo tastyyyyyyyyyy! Lip smacking. Words cannot define it. You have to try it. Unfortunately you don't get that anywhere other than Calcutta.

We even have a name for it Calcuttonese...

That's true. Also alot of Taiwanese people reside in Irvine. About 45 minutes south of Rowland Heights.

Chicago chinatown is bad.
very fucking small. The black homeless are wandering around at night begging for money. Restaurants are infested with hispanics.
I am always wondering Why they don't get rid of the black homeless in Chinatown.
Yokohama chinatown is far better and much cleaner

Here's Manila's Chinatown aka Binondo...a blend of Chinese and Spanish influences. Unique isn't it? FYI...the Philippines has one of the lowest Chinese population in the SEA. Despite that, we have a Chinatown!

My city of Tijuana located in the state of Baja California,Mexico is home to a small but growing chinese comunity with 12,000 chinese living and working in this growing city of 2 million habitants, the chinese community is now the second largest foreign community only after the Americans wich is the largest with 43,000 living in this city.
In my state of Baja theres another city Mexicali wich is home to the largest chinese community in all Mexico,a lot of the shops and banks in the city have both spanish and chinese welcome sings and is also been said that theres a chinatown wich is under the city wich was built in the late 1920´s and only the chinese were allowed to enter this underground chinatown and it use to be used ti smugle alcohol to the U.S in the years of prohibition.Theres also other chinese communitys all over Mexico.

Bangkok has the most impressive Chinatown....its liveliness is much more catchy than those in SG or elsewhere....SG is good though but its small size pull down my impression a little bit (i had been there several time...it's dull except in certain fetivals)

apart from SEA countries i would say San Francisco and Yokohama have the best Chinatown out there

Here's Manila's Chinatown aka Binondo...a blend of Chinese and Spanish influences. Unique isn't it? FYI...the Philippines has one of the lowest Chinese population in the SEA. Despite that, we have a Chinatown!

Houston's Chinatown (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinatown,_Houston) is also known as "Bellaire" after the main boulevard it's on. The original Chinatown is actually located in downtown Houston but in the 80's, Chinese businesses started popping up along Bellaire Blvd in Southwest Houston. Later, many Vietnamese businesses also appeared. Today, it's difficult to distinguish Chinatown from Little Saigon in Houston although Beltway 8 is usually considered the border with Chinatown to the east and Little Saigon to the west. With that said, there are still many Chinese businesses west of Beltway 8 and Vietnamese businesses east of it.

Below are some night time photos I took a few weeks ago:

Dunhuang Plaza.

Dunhuang Plaza. One of the newest shopping centers in Chinatown.

This was taken from Sterling Plaza, another newer shopping centers across from Dunhuang. The glass building in the background belongs to American First National Bank (恆豐銀行). A Taiwanese-American bank. It is currently the tallest commercial building in Chinatown.

This is looking down at Bellaire toward east. The restaurant in the front is Arirang, a Korean restaurant. Behind Arirang is Chase. There is no shortage of banks in Chinatown. In a two block radius (from Beltway 8 to Gessner) on Bellaire, there is a total of 9 banks.
http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4079/4747541410_b4379a6937_b.jpg

This is now technically considered Little Saigon as it's west of Beltway 8. Kim Son (金山)is a pretty famous restaurant and offers dimsum and hotpot buffet. They host at least one wedding per weekend.

Hong Kong City Mall

This is also west of Beltway 8 in a large shopping center called Hong Kong City Mall (香港城)although nearly all of the businesses inside are Vietnamese.

Ocean Palace (珍寶)is a large Chinese restaurant. Like Kim Son, Ocean Palace also offers dimsum and hosts many weddings on weekends. Also many Vietnamese concerts are played here.

I don't know but I can't imagine Hanoi to have a Chinatown. The business won't be that different from other areas in the city. Chinatown in HCMC looks physically also not very different from the other parts of the city. I hate to say this, but therefore I think Vietnamese and Chinese culture are too similar. I am also not sure if Hanoians are keen of a place with only Chinese food and Chinese products.

The Harmonious Gate of Interest:Chinatown, Victoria, BC

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2597/3877507008_1fa009f202_b.jpg
by Brandon Godfrey

The Gate of Harmonious Interest, or Tong Ji Men, was erected in 1981. It was built in China and is modeled after typical gates there. Both the Chinese and non-Chinese communities worked together to have this gate installed over Fisgard Street. Two inscriptions allude to this cooperative effort: "To work together with one heart" and "To help each other achieve harmony."
It is a most interesting structure in terms of Chinese cultural symbolism. It's overall theme is Unity in Duality. This theme is seen in the Gate's treatment of the Golden Dragon, a Yang element, and the Red Phoenix, a Yin element. Red symbolizes joy and festivity while gold symbolizes wealth and prosperity. These colours-together with touches of Qing (a blue-green colour), which is symbolic of growth and peace-represents the harmony of the elements. In particular, the red and gold represent the union of heaven and earth.

There are bells hung from the corner of the gate. When these chime in the wind, Buddhists and Taoists believe they ward off evil spirits. On either side of the gate are two lions, who act as guardians protecting Chinatown. The female lion on the right side and the male on the left again signify the balance of Yin and Yang. It is an impressive opening to the oldest and complete Chinatown in Canada, and second oldest in North America, after San Francisco's chinatown.

Mindanao's Chinatown
By Do Battad

And of course, a city will not be complete without a Chinatown. Unknown to many, Davao City holds the distinction of having the biggest Chinatown in the world, with a total land area of approximately 44 hectares covering at least four barangays. The creation and development of Chinatown was an initiative of the Davao City Council Tourism Committee Chairperson, Ms. Susan Isabel Reta, in an effort to attract more foreign and local tourists to Davao City.

So far, there are three grand archways erected strategically on the borders of Davao City's Chinatown. These archways, also known as the "pailou" or "paifang", are usually decorated in red, green, and gold colors with traditional Chinese symbols such as a dragon or a lion, and serve as a memorial of friendship, unity and peace among Filipino and Chinese living in Davao City. The archways were made possible through the efforts of the Chinese families who, over the years, have contributed much to the development and progress of Davao City. Their names are engraved in a slab of granite, which are attached to the archway's beams.

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Hsv8KRWrbXI/Tc_Ig4VPagI/AAAAAAAAAgE/uiG6qwbgU-o/s1600/archw.JPG
The Arch of Friendship

First of the archways is christened as "Arch of Friendship" which is situated along Magsaysay Avenue, near the Jones Circle. It was sponsored by the heirs of Francisco Villa-Abrille (Lim Chuan Juna), one of the prominent Chinese traders whose ancestry originated from Amoy, China, now Xiamen. The Friendship Arch was inaugurated in August 2008.

The archway's design is an inspiration from the 400-year-old architectural designs of Yuan Garden in Shanghai, China. The beams were designed similar to that of the bamboo, a traditional construction material of the Chinese. The archway is embellished with fish and pearl - symbols of the Villa-Abrille Family, and was done by Architect Arnel Villacampa.

The second archway, dubbed as the "Arch of Unity", is situated at the other end of Ramon Magsaysay Avenue towards the Magsaysay Park in Manuel Quezon Boulevard. It was donated by members of the Dabaw Kaisa Foundation, and was inaugurated on January 31, 2009 with the Consul General of the People’s Republic of China, the Honorable He Shijing in attendance.

The third archway is called the "Arch of Peace", and is situated at the corners of Jose P. Laurel, and and Sta. Ana Avenues near the Davao Central High School. It was donated by the Yuchengco Group of Companies headed by Mr. Alfonso Yuchengco, former Philippine Ambassador to the People's Republic of China. The Arch of Peace was officially inaugurated on July 20, 2009.
