The flame was ignited by Edmund Ho Hau Wah, Chief Executive of the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR), by a flint in front of the A-Ma Temple, a landmark representing the origin of Macao. Ho handed the torch to the first pair of two runners of the relay Xian Dongmei, the Chinese gold medallist of female wrestling at the Athens Olympic Games and Han Jing, Macao's gold medallist of the women's Changquan Three Event Combined at the 3rd EAG in Osaka. The two women athletes led the four-kilometer long torch relay sending the flame to the Golden Lotus Square, a memorial place marking Macao's return to the motherland in 1999. Among the relay runners, there were Lao Lishi, Chinese gold medallist of synchronized platform diving at the Athens Olympic Games and Kim Song Guk, men's boxing silver medal winner from the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK). A large crowd of over 400 runners representing 17 sports associations followed the torch relay stars passing handover points at Macao's famous landmarks such as the Macao Foundation, the Headquarters of the Macao SAR government, the Military Club and the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Macao SAR. The EAG to be held from October 29 to November 6 in 2005 will be the largest sports event hosted by Macao. At the ceremony inaugurating the one-year countdown of the 2005 East Asian Games (EAG) held on the Golden Lotus Square in Macao, Guo accepted the offer by the Organizing Committee of the EAG. Guo was among a large crowd of distinguished guests witnessing 14 torch relay runners from seven EAG participating countries and regions covering some 4 kilometers, accompanied by 400-odd Macao sportsmen and volunteer runners. Macao launched the EAG volunteer enrollment project in June last year, hoping to build a volunteer pool of some 13,000 direct volunteer workers and about 40,000 indirect volunteers for the largest games to be held in the city in October next year.
