City of London

Height: 127m
Floors: 36
Built: 1967 (refurbished 1998-2000)
Architect: Sheppard Robson International

Skyscrapers.com listing (http://www.emporis.com/en/wm/bu/?id=110662)

Notes:
Formerly known as Britannic House (http://www.skyscrapernews.com/britannic_house.jpg), this tower underwent a major renovation in the late 1990s, costing £300 million. It was given a complete recladding, along with a height increase and larger floorplates.

It is currently the 3rd tallest building in the City, after Tower 42 and SwissRe. In terms of the amount of rentable floorspace it is actually the largest.

The original design proposed by Santiago Calatrava included an enormous fin on top of the building that would have taken the height to 203m (666ft), but this plan was rejected because of fears it would spoil views of St. Paul's Cathedral.

The entrance feature is nice but its too wide, there should be another setback and it should have risen a bit more.

It looks quite good, but it is a bit too "fat" for my taste

It seems a bit isolated from the main cluster, which I don't like. From certain angles it really interferes with St Pauls Cathedral. It's also rather bulky, and looks shorter than 127m.

However, the cladding is of a high standard. I like the vertical strips running up to form the overhanging 'railing' at the top - it's a nice detail which gives a distinctive shape and style to the building. Compared to its previous incarnation as Britannic House, it's ten times better.

Not one of the City's best, though.

yeah i agree it is out on a limb... a tale of commercial greed instead of demolishing the old building. Still it is rather nice up close

At first I never really appreciated this building, I thought it was too squat.. but recently I've really began to like its shape and originality.. its stands out in its area, and hopefully in the near future shall get more similiar sized pals to bring it into the cluster better.

I give the building's current look a 9.5/10 and its 1967-1998 lookhttp://www.skyscrapernews.com/britannic_house.jpg a 7/10. Was the building's old look boring? Are there any similar buildings?
