The David Dunlap Observatory plays a major national and international role in research in astronomy and astrophysics. As part of the University of Toronto, it is also a centre for education in these areas.

The main dome at the Observatory houses the largest optical telescope in Canada, a 1.9m (74") reflector. Smaller telescopes are located in the domes on top of the administration building, which also contains offices for the research staff and facilities for data analysis.
