Jodhpur is the second largest city in the Indian state of Rajasthan. The city is known as the "Sun City" for the bright, sunny weather it enjoys all year. It is also referred to as the "Blue City" due to the blue-painted houses around the Mehrangarh Fort.

Jodhpur is located 335 kilometres (208 mi) west from the state capital, Jaipur and 200 kilometres (124 mi) from the city of Ajmer. It was formerly the seat of a princely state of the same name, the capital of the Marwar kingdom. The old city circles the fort and is bounded by a wall with several gates. However, the city has expanded greatly outside the wall over the past several decades.

Jodhpur was founded in 1459 by Rao Jodha, a Rajput chief of the Rathore clan. Jodha succeeded in conquering the surrounding territory and thus founded a state which came to be known as Marwar with Jodhpur as its capital.

This area of Jodhpur, under the foothills of Meharangarh fort is called Brahmapuri, named after the original settlers: brahmins. Brahmapuri is characterized by its organic street pattern, where primary lane bifurcates into a complex skein of sub-lanes. The main street however run North-South and slope downwards steeply and end at the twin-lakes namely the Roop Sagar and Padam Sagar at the foot of the fort.The streets in Brahmapuri are extremely narrow, not without a reason. The houses(aligned east-west) more often, cast a shadow on the street at both times of the day(morning hours and evening hours), thus leaving the streets cool. The plinth height of all houses in Brahmapuri are more than 1.5 meters height at times to escape the reflection of sun rays from the street.

Interesting facts. I thought the narrow streets were just archaic town planning :lol:

or no planning at all! :lol: but yeah I knew the reason behind why they were blue but didn't know this until I came across it recently.

Next post: I'll post about the stone architecture of the walled city and after that the art deco/modern buildings of the 20s to 60s when the city started to spread out of the walls and expanded. Then finally the present day sandstone structures with elements of indo-saracenic/neo-rajasthani architecture.

Jodhu . Can you post photos of ur ancestor's house also?

My ancestors are not from Jodhpur babaji hence no ancestral property in Jodhpur.

Besides the blue houses one can also notice buildings made using reddish/brown coloured stone which is local to Jodhpur. However you don't see the stone being used today reasons for which will be explained later. Anyway structures built with this stone are often havelis sporting traditional rajasthani architectural features such as the jharokha. Many have turned into hotels.

As I said earlier the city started to expand outside the parkota at the start of the 20th century. Before that the outsides were just jungle with the buildings hunting lodges, residency etc. Between the 20s until 60s Jodhpur saw buildings in the art deco, modern streamline style. The material used were again local stone. Detailing is done with the Chittar stone. The Jodhpur Royals were great promoters of Art Deco thus the official buildings they commissioned were in that style. There is fusion with Rajasthani features. Some examples now:

There are more buildings which I know of but sadly cannot find the pictures of them. Anyway the 70s, 80s and 90s saw even more expansion with housing state planned housing schemes areas etc. The architecture of them is nothing interesting so I'll skip them and come to the 2000s until present day in my next post.

Jodhpur had many heritage structures however the two most prominent ones are Mehrangarh Fort and Umaid Bhawan Palace. The latter was built as a famine relief exercise and used the local stone: Chhitar hence the reason why locals refer to the palace as Chhitar Palace. Chhitar always has been a popular stone but the early 2000s saw it being used extensively in house construction in an architectural style which can be best described as mis mash of rajasthani,western and others. Currently this is really popular and nearly all new houses are being built with Chhitar in this style. Here are few pics! there even more magnificent and beautiful houses but sadly no pictures but these are no less.

It's a really large round about with the statue of Lal Bahadur Shastri in the middle. There is a musical fountain and a jogging track. The circle is surrounded by restaurants. It's sort of a hang out place for couples with young kids as well as students.

As you take the first exit you will see this statue of Swami Vivekananda. The statue is lit up at night and the fountains start at the bottom.

I knew nothing about Jodhpur except Mehrangarh fort and the blue city tag before this thread !

The statue was installed last year.This statue is made of 'ashtadhatu' (which is a blend of eight metals) and is worth Rs 37 lakh, out of which Rs 17 lakh were contributed by public. This statue is 16 feet long, 5.6 feet wide and 15 feet high, and has been made by Fakirchand, a statue artist in Haridwar.

The fort is the best place to see the sunset from. The deity of the temple in the image is Chamunda. Her idol was moved from Mandore to Jodhpur by Rao Jodha.

Jodhpur is the number one tourist place in India. The culture and fort of that city is really wonderful. It is one of my best and memorable travel ever.

i took the back exit out of the fort and into the Old City. i wandered for a few streets and suddenly found myself here. compared to the chaos of the Old City, it seemed amazingly quiet and calm.
