Today there was the public vote of the people in Davos if or if not Herzog & De Meuron can build the Schatzalp tower. The result was tight but the majority wants the tower as it seems. There was an opposition against the project because people were afraid of real estate speculations that could follow the project.

The tower will be 105m high with 26 stories and contains a first class hotel and appartments. For mor information: http://www.schatzalp.ch/go.cfm?tower The profits from the sale of the luxury flats in the tower will be invested in the renovation of the historical Hotel Schatzalp, a former Sanitarium (famous from the Thomas Mann novel "Der Zauberberg" - The Magic Mountain).

Wow, spectacular! Usually I'm not too fond on highrises or large hotel in beautiful mountain areas, but this one fits very well! It reminds a bit of Turning Torso.

Any more renderings?

Strange place for such a building. I would have thought being on a mountain top that even a 2 storey building would have great views. What about the strenght of such a structure in this kind of location ......

I don't like Davos too much - like a commieblock city in the mountains :) I am not a fan of highrises in mountain area and there is a lot of horrible ski resorts in the Alps, especially in France but also Crans Montana. But this project here looks quite cool and doesn't distrub too much.

Here how it will look in the night:

Skyscrapers in the mountains ARE horrible indeed. But this project is not definitiv, they go on for the planning now (the pic is only one idea) - it will only be finnished by 2010 anyway.

Still, it's an interesting project. It's ways different and more exciting than those bad 60s and 70s commie blocks they build all over the alps.
Great pics Küsel! :)

Look at the rest of Davos or Crans Montana - the worst :(

I don`t know if its the best idea to build a so highrise there, a building like that would be better placed in a city like Basel, it could complement the highest highrise in Switzerland, the Messeturm Basel.

Which stands anyway a bit too lonely in a see of mid-rises :) There is already a nice high-rise area in the north close to the Rhine, but the Messeturm is just - lost somehow...

In the next couple of weeks Maag-Tower will be introduced. Design is apparently finalized and Gemeinderat apparently gave green light for the Zonenplan. So Messetower's days are counted.

Indeed, Switzerland is an unbelievable beautiful country... but many ski resorts are terrible. :bash: I'd rather go to a historic town like Chur, or beautiful quiet Engadin villages than to those terrible places.

But this tower is definately cool. I hope it gets built!
