Molik captures second straight title at Luxembourg tennis

October 31, 2004
LUXEMBOURG (Ticker) - Second-seeded Alicia Molik of Australia earned her second title in as many weeks.

Molik, who ousted Russian Maria Sharapova to win in Zurich last week, defeated 16-year-old Dinara Safina of Russia, 6-3, 6-4, Sunday in the final of the SEAT Open Luxembourg.

It was the third title of the year for Molik.

"I came into this match with a lot of confidence and I expected to win, but (Safina) can play some great tennis so I couldn't be complacent," Molik said. "To win two tournaments in a row feels great; it's something I've never done before."

The 23-year-old became the eighth different woman to win consecutive titles this year, joining the likes of Amelie Mauresmo, Lindsay Davenport and Justine Henin-Hardenne.

Improving to 2-0 lifetime against Safina, Molik has won her last six matches against Russian women, dating back to a loss to Sharapova in the final of Birmingham in June.

The younger sister of sixth-ranked men's player Marat Safin, Safina absorbed her first loss in three WTA event finals.

"She served really well and I didn't," Safina said. "She put pressure on my second serve and I just couldn't fight back. I came here hoping to win one match and I ended up in the final so I'm satisfied. I'm very happy to end my season with a final."

LUXEMBOURG (AP) -- Alicia Molik of Australia won her second straight title Sunday, defeating Dinara Safina of Russia 6-3, 6-4 in the SEAT Open final.

Molik, seeded second and ranked No. 14, has three titles this year and four for her career.

``To win two tournaments in a row feels great,'' Molik said. ``It's something I've never done before.''

Molik, a bronze medalist at the Athens Olympics, broke the Russian in the eighth game before serving out the first set. She got another break in the sixth game of the second set.

Molik won in Zurich, Switzerland, a week ago with a three-set victory over Wimbledon champion Maria Sharapova. Her other title this year came in Stockholm, Sweden.

This was Safina's first final since she won at Palermo, Sicily, in 2003 for her second career title.

``She served really well and I didn't,'' Safina said. ``She put pressure on my second serve and I just couldn't fight back today.''

I guess we did have Jelena Dokic who was ranked 4 in the world at some stage... but we all know what happened to her :runaway:

Id have to agree with him. We lack any sort of depth in the mens game [has not stopped us from dominating the Davis Cup in recent years though!]. And in the womens we only have Alicia Molik.

Yes the Hopman Cup in Perth. She mixed with Lleyton 2 years ago and got into the finals but lost to the Americans [Serena was in the team].

Jelena Dokic and Mark Poopoo won it in 1999!

Her and the disgraced Dokic would be a great pairing for Australian women's tennis, but alas was not to be :(
