If the SAAB 95 is considered rare in sweden, it is almost non existant in other countries.

The Saab 95 is way more common than the Renault 12 (?)

Lada Samara was not an uncommon car in the 90's but now I rarely see them.

First time ever I see a Giardinetta Fiat 500 estate. Very funny car, seems abandoned too. Actually I saw quite a few 1960's Fiat 500 (non estate) when I visited Italy a year ago.

It's great looking car. Also enjoy the new one, but I'd rather drive a bigger car.

The Alfa Sud was a rather common car in Sweden during the 1970-80's, now they all have disipeard, because of corosion.

Italian cars in general are very rare nowadays here in Scandinavia. They don't fit into the climate and the need of swedish people who prefer bigger vehicles especially estate-waggons.

The Lancia is very rare, first letter "T" for this 90's car means it's imported.

Lancia had succes in sweden with the Saab-Lancia 600 in the late 70's a swedish-italian joint venture, otherwise few Lancias sold here.

Mazda 323 early 80's uncommon but no sensation, same thing with the Toyota Starlet.

The Volvo 480 was a fail, already when entering the market in the late 80's ,the car had major electrical problems. It was manufactured in the Netherlands.

A6

Interesting, is Opel considered to be an exclusive car in the phillipines?, probably jeeps and suvs are more popular there because of poor road quality in some areas.

Opel is one of the most common brands in sweden with volvo, saab, vw and audi.

In countries like UK,USA and Australia Opel is sold as Vauxhall, Cadillac Catera and Holden. Do these brands sell in the phillipines ?

This is a Ford Granada, The cortina was the UK-verision of the old Ford Taunus. The Ford Granada is still quite common view, especially in small towns in the countryside.

The Lada Niva is not very common anymore, but in the 70's and early 80's russian cars had a rather large share of the market here.
In Finland the sales were probably the highest outside the countries behind the "iron curtain"

Even if you have the money here, you keep your profile low.

Rolls-Royce, Maserati and Ferrari are cars making other people envious, you don't want to do that
in socialist sweden. No tradition of excess in Scandinavia. Rich here means greedy...

Do these brands sell in the phillipines ?

nope, it's not considered an executive car here. BMW, AUDI, Volvo & MBenz are the country's exec.cars.. I had only seen a Cadillac here twice in my entire life, maybe Cadillac is being sold in grey market..

Back to Opel, quite a competitive design, and nice interiors. But it's a cheap car here if you'll buy as second hand. Just like Chevrolet Optra.. Because parts and services are available BUT limited.

A 1999-2003 Opel Astra shares the same price with the 1993-1995 Honda Civic which means Opel is way cheaper.. While the 2004-2007 Chevy Optra shares the same price with 1999-2001 Honda Civic... :)

And wow! Brooklands (not a Mulsanne) That's an extremely rare spot even here in Europe. Except for Monaco ;) I don't recall seeing any even during few days trips to London, Paris, Rome. Since we're at Bentleys, Continental GT is defietely the most common (or, I should say: "the least uncommon";)) here in Poland. Some shots from my city (*again - marked taken from exoticcars.pl):

Only one Bentley dealer in all sweden, 1-2 cars sold per year. I don't think I ever saw a Bentley here.

Older Rolls-Royce are more common, usually owned by limousine-service companies.

Fiat Campagnola, didn't know this car even existed. Looks like they had Range-Rover in mind, when designing this car. The popemobile is based on a Fiat Campagnola.
Also how are you supposed to see the licenseplate ? Those letter are hardly visible even close up.

In France I saw a Peugeot 504 cabriolet, never saw one at home.

Cabriolets in general are very uncommon in sweden due to the climat.

Zastava sold some models with the badge Yugo, for example Yugo Skala or Yugo Koral. The Koral was sold in Italy as Innocenti Koral. The Zastava in the end was a subsidiary of Fiat group and built almost all its models under Fiat license. New models of Zastava were the out of productions of Fiat in here

Volkswagen-TAS, but that wasn't exactly a brand. The plant used to built NSU Prinz, VW Golf, Jetta and Caddy. Plus there were utilitary vehicles manufacturers (TAM, IMV, FAP, Sanos, Ikarbus).

Zastava 101 (later Yugo Skala 55) used to be exported to Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Greece and some countries in northern Africa. Zastava 128 (based on Fiat 128) is still popular taxi car in Cairo! :)
Yugo was exported to United Kingdom and USA in the late 1980s.
Zastava 1300 is the rarest Zastava's car to see today. It used to be also a police car in Yugoslavia back in 1970s.

This was in 1975, expedition "From Kragujevac to Kilimanjaro" to test Zastava 101 in Africa.

Quite well, especially in north Africa (Egypt, Tunisia). I think that even today Zastava 128 is assembled in Egypt. :)
I forgot, Yugo was exported to Malta also, with right-handed steering wheel.

this car does not exist in Sweden. (except some possible private import) No such cars were sold at all because of all the Renault sales were managed by Volvo and they didn't want Renaults bigger cars to compete with their own brand.

The only Renault sold in the 80's when the Renault 25 was produced was the Renault 5 which was a small car and no threat to Volvo.

I see Volvo Amazon at times, it was the nr 1 car in sweden all 60's and most of the 70's

In the 80's it was the typical used car for the poor youth, many Amazons sadly were not taken care of, received a lot of beating and bad maintenance , they also became customized and rebuilt.

So in the 2010's this is a classic vintage car, possibly worth more in other countries where it is less frequent and more valuable.

So there is export of Amazons to Germany and Holland going on, where prices are higher.

One thing about the Fiat 131.

I remember these cars in the 70's when FIAT had a larger share of the swedish auto market, than today (as the asian cars have taken over)

The rule we had about headlight wipers from 1974 made the FIAT have a wiper placed right on the headlight, it looked wierd.
http://img651.imageshack.us/img651/1526/80582169.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/651/80582169.jpg/)

looked something like this^^, couldn't find a picture so I draw wipers on this picture.

To this day I can't see how these wipers could be allowed or less how this stupid rule was initiated and not abolished until in the 90's.

Not to forget, the fiat 131 abart was a succesful rally car in the 70's

it's a 1974 Saab 99 , notice the headlight wipers. the problem these car had was that the waterpump easilly broke, resulting in engine overheating.

As for Fiat, these cars are especially made for mediterrainian warm climate, tender chassis and thin sheet metal, they can't resist the salt on the roads at wintertime, corrosion quickly ruined these cars.

So Fiat is a popular brand in Italy, Greece, Turkey and South America.

Also french and italian brands never made succes in North America due to this reason. Citroen especially failed because of the hydraulic suspension which was banned in the US.

Actually the popularity of SAAB is drastically decreasing here in Sweden too (where SAAB is manufactured) It used to be the nr 2 brand after Volvo, but now people tend to avoid buying the new SAAB 9-5, which is a quite unusual model even here. Most SAABs I see are the older ones.

Were those Zastavas sold in Poland or anywhere else outside Yugoslavia?
BTW have you seen a new Zastava?

About Zastava 750. Yes, they were available here. My friends had one of those in '70s, a green one (IIRC white or red was the ususal color). They travelled major part of Europe with it. Western Europe, which was then quite extraordinary for polish citizens. The following model of Zastava was even assembled here in Poland as Zastava 1100p in trade with assembly kits of Polski Fiat 125p for Crvena Zastava plant. They dissapeared from roads in '90s, now Zastava is another rare car in Poland. Usually when You see one it's well preserved and driven by some old guy, often te original owner. Here's one spotted in my city:

Yes, Fiat Oggi was an exclusively Brazilin Fiat of the early 1980s, only a few thousand were ever made in two years of production.

A station waggon also existed, called Panorama, it sold better:

And the hatchback version was called 147 (later a new name, Spazio, was adopted in the final years):

Alfa Romeo 2300 TI - year 1983(?)

http://img252.imageshack.us/img252/8717/fernandobotaroalfa2300t.jpg

This Alfa Romeo was built in Brazil from the 70s to the mid 80s and it was the only Alfa Romeo that only existed outside Italy, it was designed exclusively for the Brazilian market.

Its design is loosely based on the Alfetta berlina, but the 2300 TI was much larger, and much more luxurious. Production ended in 1986.

Today you have better luck spotting a UFO than a 2300 IT in Brazil, they are VERY VERY rare. It has been years since I last spotted one. This picture was taken from here (http://www.carrosinuteis.com.br/alfa-romeo-2300-9/fernando-botaro-alfa-2300-ti-jundiai-sp-2/)

Some crazy person adapted one of these as a pickup truck:

http://lh3.ggpht.com/_HjXIQ1BSFEE/TJGzEQwg-DI/AAAAAAAAFZA/jRvrfV1q-n8/s1600/alfa+romeo+picape%5B2%5D.jpg

just found it googling

According to this magazine (http://quatrorodas.abril.com.br/classicos/brasileiros/conteudo_143477.shtml), 29564 Alfa Romeo 2300TI were built in Brazil, and a few were exported to Germany.

Add from 1977:

Also very popular in Czechoslovakia was Simca. I think it was the only country behind the iron curtain selling these cars in showrooms. They were available on second hand market in Poland too, so my father had an opportunity to get one in early seventies. I was driven in one as a child what made very proud back then :)

But during those years Poland was still behind the iron curtain, so I presume there was no import until the 90's. By then the Stanzas which came to Poland were already second hand from Germany? Correct? Or were any new Datsun Stanzas sold in your country ?

Correct, probably all Stanzas came to Poland as second hand vehicles. Generally before 1989 there were no official importers or dealers of foreign cars. New cars were imported either individually or by state owned company. The company had Sunny in offer, and it became relatively popular in 80's. Only wealthy people could afford such car - notable actors, lawyers, doctors etc. I guess one could specially order Stanza, but nobody did. People who wanted sth. bigger than Corolla or Sunny could order Camry, Galant or 626 in forementioned company - they were known on polish streets in commie times, Stanza and Buebird were not. Btw: in mid 80's I knew a dentist, who had silver Mazda 626. I remember how excited I was, when his son let me take a look inside. It was very expensive and luxury car then. My parents din't have a car at all.

Remarkably, I used to laugh when I saw the cars east germans, poles and russians drove in the communist years. Odd old looking cars.

Nowadays you see the most exclusive cars in those countries; Maseratis, S-class MB's and monster-SUVs I rarely see those in moderate Sweden.

Actually my parents had a VW 1503 Beetle in the mid 70's, then they bought a Mazda 323 estate in 1979.

Our neighbour had a Opel Commodore Automatic and he once gave me a lift to school. That car was pure luxury back then. Especially as you could move the mirrors from the inside. :)

Probabily you mean the Wartburg 311 which is similar to FSO Syrena, but the Wartburg has written W A R T B U R G on the bonnet and then it has bulging bodywork upper the rear wheels

And if we wanted to be precise You would loose that bet :) It's not FSO Syrena, but FSM Syrena. What's the difference? The FSO plant manufactured 100-104 models with suicide doors in 1957-1972, then the assembly was moved to FSM plant. This is post '72 105 model with conventional doors. Here's another example:

I´m sorry, the seat 1500 was a sedan, used by taxi drivers in madrid in in the 60s and 70s,

Was also the seat 1200/1430 sport sold in Italy as a Fiat model?

Satyricon84
January 13th, 2012, 12:56 AM
^^ The sedan was the Seat 1430, based on the Fiat 124 with engines of 1400, 1600 and 1800 Litre. In Italy there wasn't the sport version, infact it was a project developed entirely by Seat itself. It wasn't neither exported in Italy, but you could find it in France, Germany, Holland or Belgium.
Seat 1500 is a model totally different and older than the Seat 1200 (it was a model made in 1963-1972) based on the Fiat 1800/2100 (1958-1968)

Similar to The Opel Monza but smaller. This is like a clone between Opel Ascona and Opel Monza

Or is it similar in size comparing with the Opel Monza ??

This is nothing but the 3-door version of the Open Ascona produced in Brazil in the 1980s. Everything is exactly like the Opel Ascona 5 doors, but they chopped off the back doors because in the 80s Brazilians had a strange very strong aversion to 4-door cars. Incidentally, this car was called Chevrolet Monza in Brazil, but had no relation to the Opel Monza.

Many foreign models, when adapted to be produced in Brazil in the 70s and 80s, underwent similar changes, to create a new "two door" version for Brazilians.

The Brazilian "Volkswagen Santana" (from the German VW Passat):

http://classificados.autolistas.com.br/images/2011/11/12/10/santana-gls-18-ano1987_1.jpg

http://www.volkspage.net/vwsantana/seucarro/thyagoszoke/SantanaCLi1994-ThyagoSzoke-03.jpg

The sedan version of the Chevrolet Monza (Open Ascona) was also offered as a two-door:

The car known in Europe as Fiat Duna was exported there from Brazil, it was the sedan version of the Fiat Uno, but in Brazil it was offered as a two door as well

http://i166.photobucket.com/albums/u105/Poetryandemotion/IMAG1525.jpg

The most common car when I grew up. A solid robust car. The 4 door verision served as police vehicle.

Actually the 2 door verison, the 242 was the most rare model in the 240-series. There were three verisons of the 242: L, DL & GL

These spacious and boxy 240-series also resulted in great succes in the USA especially for the estate the 245, also for the 264 with the V6 (from Renault) was a good option if you wanted a high dollar sedan and shift your own gears.

It's a classic swedish car. I myself used to have a 1980 Volvo 245.

This Gurgel Motomachine is probably equivalent to a 1960's "motorbikecar" like the Goggomobil and Messerschmidt.

After some beautiful and/or interesting cars something bland. But uncommon in Poland, and completely absent in most european countries. Shot taken in Katowice, but it's not mine (made by bregi), and cars were not it's theme, but in the middle, parked between the two Audis, You can notice Honda City:

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-O9g_0y5yTss/TyAUYVfmJQI/AAAAAAAAAcM/r7RfchwuiHg/s800/P1150501.JPG

Made in Turkey saloon derivate of Jazz. It wasn't successful and ultimately Honda Poland had withdrawn this model from it's portfolio.

And here’s sth much more exiting. The 8-series bimmers. The first is AC Schnitzer tuned, the latter (spotted several times around the city) is regular one.

It was summer 2002. I had been visiting Southern Sweden (mainly Skåne) back then . It was my third visit to this beautiful country, previously, among others, I turned to Norrland, Stockholm and Götheborg.

I must say I felt slightly uncomfortable in Växjö. I stopped somewhere in a suburban area on a small petrol station with an intention to buy some food and petrol. Then, several black, classic, American cars turned down there. They stopped, drivers and their mates gave a quick look at my car (classic Audi), looked at my foreign plates and then starred at me. All of them! With no words. Some of them went off the cars and moved closer to me, still not saying anything. Well, I pretended I did not see them, however I was just about to piss in my pants. Eventually, nothing happened, I refuelled, meanwhile they ran away with a characteristic V8 vrooom.

I didn't find this information, but the BR-800, a slightly larger model which was derived motomachine, reached 117 km / h.
Gurgel started with the Ipanema e made a lot of cars based on VW mechanical, (Xavante, Chef, Carajas and others), until he started his project CENA, which culminated in the BR-800.
