Kind of off-topic, but relevant...I was recently in Toronto for a few days and when driving there, I found it amazing that I was able to see the CN tower and a few parts of the skyline literally across the lake in St. Catherines. Next time if I have the chance, I need to go there to take some pics, the view was incredible.

BTW, the CityPlace development is really something, driving down the Gardiner feels surreal at times with all the stuff going on.

In regards to TB's post, are the CIBC and Bay buildings there actually so close to the lake? Yorkville is quite the walk from the harbourfront...seems like an optical illusion to me.
Its probably just because I dont know the city as well as most of you do :P

I love Toronto.
I live in Vancouver but would move back to Hogtown in a minute if I could.

There are a number of criticisms that I have as well. City Place is far too sterile, there are some major condo mistakes made on the lake, many streets like Yonge are ramshackle, and there need to be a few counter points to the CN Tower. The rest of my complaints are more trivial or have to do with infrastructure.

The drop off from the CBD isn't something that will persist much longer. Another large cluster is forming at Yorkville, while tall structures like AURA (252m)and 990 Bay (192m) are being built in between the two clusters. A couple towers like Scotia Plaza would be all needed to create a fairly dense, tall skyline from Front to Bloor.

It's spectacular, but there's too much of an imbalance between CN Tower and the rest. The CN Tower is 553m, then everything else is 298m or shorter. It looks awkward. Varied heights between 300 and 550m would look infinitely better and fill the skyline out better.

Yeah, probably more than that. We've been in a deep freeze lately and we had about 20 cm of snow last week, so that's all stuck around. Plus we're getting more this weekend.

Amazingly, this patch of the financial core will get even denser once Bay-Adelaide II & III go up. I wonder if that block directly north of Bay-Adelaide I will get the same treatment: 10 floor historical block recreated with a 200m building above it?

That's a fresh new angle. I bet some of these sub 20 floor buildings will get redeveloped into much taller structures. There's already a redevelopment proposal of an 18 floor building just a few blocks west of here.

It's a shame...I remember when the Royal York was one of the landmarks or the Toronto skyline. It looked especially great from the water at night.

A shame the city did not prevent it from being dwarfed by crappy condos and bargin towers. Classy place with a rich history.
