Here's my favorite of the upstate cities. 93,919 in city and 1,135,213 in metro(including troy and schenectady.) Home of upstates tallest building, Corning Tower standing at 589 feet.

Chibcha2k November 1st, 2004, 09:13 AM its tallest building looks great...has a nice skyline, i love how Corning Tower dominates the skyline...
...the city overall looks nice and peaceful 8/10
what's Corning Tower's height in metres ?
SeeMacau November 2nd, 2004, 06:49 AM Not very interseted in this one !! 5/10
hauntedheadnc November 3rd, 2004, 04:36 PM Empire Plaza is nauseating. Le Corbusier's wet dream, through ironically it contrasts nicely with the rest of the skyline. Albany seems to more excel in the strengths of urban density however, rather than skyline alone. I've seen some shots of Albany's rowhouse neighborhoods that are simply to die for!

I definitely agree with you. Albany has some of the nicest old style rowhouses and other buildings I've ever seen. Around Washington park (right behind the Empire State Plaza) is absolutely gorgious. Some of the streets downtown are still brick that's been there for hundreds of years and they have some really cool outdoor markets. I could only find one picture of the row houses...

Empire Plaza looks great.
pricemazda November 5th, 2004, 12:11 AM Im not a big fan of empire plaza, its a bit too 70's for my liking. Although it does look cool from the air.
All over the capital district there are loads of rowhouse, you should look at Troy across the river.
RocCityBandit November 30th, 2004, 10:56 PM Empire State Plaza looks magnificent from afar, but up close, you see how it tore apart the heart of downtown Albany (the oldest city in the USA). Still, it is a great town to walk around and seems to be going through a bit of a renaissance, lock your car doors though. It's metropolitan population is not as high as you stated above, but who's counting?
james2390 December 2nd, 2004, 01:37 AM Wow, unexpecting:D 7.5/10
HoustonTexas December 2nd, 2004, 01:57 AM Looks like Buffalo
VAN-TO December 2nd, 2004, 02:08 AM 5/10
Jaybird December 2nd, 2004, 05:03 AM Other than Empire State Plaza, Albany's skyline is much smaller-looking than Buffalo and Rochester's. But it's still nice and good for a city of 90,000+.
5.5/10
intervention December 2nd, 2004, 05:44 AM Bleh. Aside from those two older looking buildings in the centre of that ugly government complex, the rest is boring.
Kevin J January 6th, 2005, 11:22 PM 5.0 Corning doesn't look bad from far away, and at certain angles. But up close, it's an ugly slab, sitting next to it's equally ugly sisters in a temple of brutalism. What a jarring and unfortunate contrast to the stately capitol and other gems nearby.
But that's all about the aesthetics of the individual buildings. The skyline view from the highway in the second photo isn't bad. Unfortunately, it looks like nothing new has been built here since the 70s.
Blahb January 8th, 2005, 03:36 AM I rate it a 7. It gets +cool points for the Corning Tower. But if that wasn't there, I would rate it a 6.5.
Ellatur January 19th, 2005, 04:51 AM 9.5
MIMICA January 19th, 2005, 05:43 AM well, since i don't rate a skyline on how many buildings it has, i usually rate it on the buildings, and the density, i believe that this city really lacks some serious modernizing.
all the buildings in the skyline look like repainted commie blocks, and are completely boring. the night shot of the skyline was alittle unexpecting, and it really did look nice!
final vote - 7 :)

Emppire State Plaza obliterated hundreds of these fine buildings...a whole neighborhood. There is a highway whichleads directly into the building ending in its parking garage below the massive plinth plaza stucture.
When I was a kid I loved Empire State Plaza also known as The Albany Mall. It was the ultimate in a kid's highrise dreams (I glorified the place in a similar way I see a lot of our younger forumers glorifying some of today's shiny monstrosities) Anyway, thank God I never got my wish that an Albany Mall type thing would be built in my city. The buildings do have a somewhat elegant and sleek profile though.
MattSal May 31st, 2005, 04:25 PM Looks okay, but that one building dominates too much. I give it a 6.5/10.
SoboleuS May 31st, 2005, 07:55 PM Ugly skyscrapers, but some nice old buidings. 6/10
Elite August 7th, 2005, 08:26 AM This city looks pretty cool and i like that tall building.

SDfan March 12th, 2006, 03:55 AM Empire State Plaza is a crime against urban design.
But besides that everything else looks nice for the northeast. 8/10.
Wezza March 13th, 2006, 01:52 AM 5 at the max. A city with a metro of that size i would expect to have a bit better skyline.
That nightime shot of Empire Plaza looks pretty cool though.

Moren-o March 13th, 2006, 09:16 PM I see some cool buildings, but there is no density at all!
Very spread out and organised.
Not my type of city.
6.5/10

It's very ugly and depressing.

6/10
Pruim May 7th, 2006, 03:02 PM The skyline is dominated by buildings that look the same, pretty unique. Indeed something that is inspired from Le Corbusier. And for a city this small very impressive. I like it! 6/10
Skyman May 7th, 2006, 05:42 PM 7/10
LMCA1990 May 8th, 2006, 08:14 AM 8/10- it looks like a planned capital (brasilia), anyway it looks underdeveloped and desolate for its metro pop.

Somnifor January 2nd, 2009, 10:47 AM This is the oldest inland city in the eastern US (Santa Fe, New Mexico is the only inland city in the country that is older). It was founded by the Dutch in 1614. Much of Albany's charm is in it's old neighborhoods rather than it's skyline, but the skyline isn't bad for a city of it's size. Apparently the Dutch old town was torn down after the revolution as 'slum clearance', an early example of urban renewal. It would be interesting if that part of the city survived to this day but if it was considered a slum in 1790 it probably wasn't nice to live in.

New Yorker25 August 29th, 2009, 06:12 AM Albany has a very good skyline but the Empire State Plaza is hideous. I don't have words for what it does to the skyline. Those towers should be knocked down. Without them the skyline would be much better. The current skyline gets a 6.5/10.
