Empire Plaza is nauseating. Le Corbusier's wet dream, through ironically it contrasts nicely with the rest of the skyline. Albany seems to more excel in the strengths of urban density however, rather than skyline alone. I've seen some shots of Albany's rowhouse neighborhoods that are simply to die for!

I definitely agree with you. Albany has some of the nicest old style rowhouses and other buildings I've ever seen. Around Washington park (right behind the Empire State Plaza) is absolutely gorgious. Some of the streets downtown are still brick that's been there for hundreds of years and they have some really cool outdoor markets. I could only find one picture of the row houses...

Im not a big fan of empire plaza, its a bit too 70's for my liking. Although it does look cool from the air.

All over the capital district there are loads of rowhouse, you should look at Troy across the river.

Empire State Plaza looks magnificent from afar, but up close, you see how it tore apart the heart of downtown Albany (the oldest city in the USA). Still, it is a great town to walk around and seems to be going through a bit of a renaissance, lock your car doors though. It's metropolitan population is not as high as you stated above, but who's counting?

Other than Empire State Plaza, Albany's skyline is much smaller-looking than Buffalo and Rochester's. But it's still nice and good for a city of 90,000+.

Bleh. Aside from those two older looking buildings in the centre of that ugly government complex, the rest is boring.

5.0 Corning doesn't look bad from far away, and at certain angles. But up close, it's an ugly slab, sitting next to it's equally ugly sisters in a temple of brutalism. What a jarring and unfortunate contrast to the stately capitol and other gems nearby.

But that's all about the aesthetics of the individual buildings. The skyline view from the highway in the second photo isn't bad. Unfortunately, it looks like nothing new has been built here since the 70s.

I rate it a 7. It gets +cool points for the Corning Tower. But if that wasn't there, I would rate it a 6.5.

well, since i don't rate a skyline on how many buildings it has, i usually rate it on the buildings, and the density, i believe that this city really lacks some serious modernizing.

all the buildings in the skyline look like repainted commie blocks, and are completely boring. the night shot of the skyline was alittle unexpecting, and it really did look nice!

final vote - 7 :)

Emppire State Plaza obliterated hundreds of these fine buildings...a whole neighborhood. There is a highway whichleads directly into the building ending in its parking garage below the massive plinth plaza stucture.

When I was a kid I loved Empire State Plaza also known as The Albany Mall. It was the ultimate in a kid's highrise dreams (I glorified the place in a similar way I see a lot of our younger forumers glorifying some of today's shiny monstrosities) Anyway, thank God I never got my wish that an Albany Mall type thing would be built in my city. The buildings do have a somewhat elegant and sleek profile though.

But besides that everything else looks nice for the northeast. 8/10.

The skyline is dominated by buildings that look the same, pretty unique. Indeed something that is inspired from Le Corbusier. And for a city this small very impressive. I like it! 6/10

This is the oldest inland city in the eastern US (Santa Fe, New Mexico is the only inland city in the country that is older). It was founded by the Dutch in 1614. Much of Albany's charm is in it's old neighborhoods rather than it's skyline, but the skyline isn't bad for a city of it's size. Apparently the Dutch old town was torn down after the revolution as 'slum clearance', an early example of urban renewal. It would be interesting if that part of the city survived to this day but if it was considered a slum in 1790 it probably wasn't nice to live in.

Albany has a very good skyline but the Empire State Plaza is hideous. I don't have words for what it does to the skyline. Those towers should be knocked down. Without them the skyline would be much better. The current skyline gets a 6.5/10.
