The Grand Arch and La Défense, a few kilometers northwest from the Arch de Triumph on Avenue Des Champs Elysees. The La Défense complex of futuristic office buildings is the most ambitious town planning project ever taken in the Paris region. The project began around 1960, and now there are over 48 towers providing office space for over 900 companies. This was the second of my three favorite places in Paris. I felt a great sense of optimism for modern mankind expressed in the architecture of these shiny new buildings. The area reminded me much of the financial district on the south end of Manhattan in New York.


La Grande Arch - awesome! The walls of this gigantic open cube rise shear in seeming defiance of gravity. With its pre-stressed concrete frame, faced in glass and white Carrara marble, the building weighs 300,000 tons and is carried on 12 enormous piles sunk in the below-ground area. The cathedral of Notre-Dame with its spire could fit into the space between the walls of the arch. The south vertical wall houses government ministry offices and the north wall major French and international companies. The 3-story thick roof is occupied by the International Foundation for Human Rights. The vertical poles towards the left on the interior of the arch support an elevator which can be taken to the roof. The front steps are a great place to hang out, eat lunch, and enjoy the sights of La Défense.

The "Pinstripe Tower", a name I bestowed to this unusual monument in the south end of La Défense.

Abstract sculpture with Elf Towers rising from far behind. This view in La Défense portrayed such an intense futuristic feeling that I would have not been surprised if a robot had come out and greeted me!

Non, je m'en fous, si jamais j'ai l'occasion de lui en faire gouter, je lui demanderai sans doute ce qu'il en pense, mais au fond je m'en fous. ;)

Bah tu as de la chance, on doit être plus libre dans ton cas de figure (m'en fous de l'avis des autres) que dans le mien (l'avis des autres a de la valeur)

I got probably more feedback of what people think of La Défense than most forumers here, I started several threads about it since i'm on skyscrapers forums (about 4 years maybe) and I made a site about it . so yes i'm interested in what people think, and I'm also interested in the home towns of other people, I'm even especially interested in the US, since it's a country I particulary appreciate.
What I said is that I'm not obsessed and running after opinions, see the difference ?

je suis pas obsédé par "ce que pense les ricains de ld", je suis obsédé à l'idée de connaître l'image de la France à l'étranger et de sucroit dans la première puissance mondiale. Je suis obsédé à l'idée de savoir si oui ou non notre pays vaut aussi bien qu'un autre, si ld équivaut à une belle skyline us, si on est aussi modernes que n'importe quel autre pays etc.

Il vaut mieux se poser des questions et chercher des réponses, qu'être soit sûrs de soit sans autres raisons que de l'arrogance franchouillarde, soit ne pas s'en poser et être tjrs défaitiste à tort.

Bon ok on va faire simple :

est-ce que je te donne l'impression d'être sur de moi sans autre raison que l'arrogance franchouille ?
est-ce que je suis defaitiste à tort ?

Deja je ne cherche pas à t'agresser, donc reste sur la meme fréquence que moi plz :)

Ensuite quand je donnais ses exemples je ne parlais pas de toi mais d'attitudes générales, à savoir la surrestime avoeugle ou le défaitisme profond. Tu peux pas être les 2 à la fois non ? Bah voila, tu as la réponse à ta question :)

oui , en occultant le fait que manhattan compte environ 4000 tours et la défense 60, que la tour la plus haute de Ld fait 187 mètres et celle de new york 380, ah oui, elle date des années 30, au fait...

@Hans ok alors, dsl j'ai un peu réagit violement, mais j'étais enervé par englishman qui interevient dans la conversation en me traitant implicitement d'arrogant (ou en en donnant l'impression en tout cas) sans savoir de quoi on parle.

Je suis desole d'avoir cause l'offense.

Perhaps it is my far from perfect French. It had just seemed a bit like you were having a go at someone for showing views of other people around the world of LD when I didn't really see the need, I did read the thread however first. Obviously I don't frequent the French forums much (it takes me a long time to understand complicated sentances and even more to reply/comment in French and so I genereally look at pictures, read the description or short comments and don't comment myself). Any way, bon nuit :)
