Azmat January 8th, 2012, 08:54 PM Ganzouri orders removal of garbage from streets of Cairo and Giza
Sun, 08/01/2012 - 18:15
Prime Minister Kamal al-Ganzouri on Sunday instructed the governors of Cairo, Giza and Qalyubiya to implement a new strategy for removing garbage and waste from the streets, and to build youth centers and public parks in areas that have been cleaned.
Municipalities will now hand out fines to people who throw garbage in the streets. Also, Egyptian companies, instead of foreign ones, will collect the garbage.
During a meeting with Minister of Local Development Mohamed Attiya and the three governors, Ganzouri instructed them to launch a one-week campaign to clean main streets of garbage, a chronic problem in Egypt.
According to official figures, Greater Cairo, with its 17 million inhabitants, produces an average of 15,000 tons of solid waste per day.
The World Bank reported in 2005 that 88 percent of collected waste is disposed in open dumps in urban areas, or left in the streets. Government attempts to solve the problem have failed.
“We have contracted 16 specialized companies to do the job in collaboration with civil society organizations,” said Attiya.
Environment Minister Mostafa Hussein said the ministry will begin transmitting mobile phone text messages to educate citizens on how to protect the environment.

I hope they do this to the rest of Egypt as well. Just imagine the health benefits that would come with not having any trash lying around on the streets. http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii52/lilhabhab/smiley.gif?t=1266172885
xAbd0o January 8th, 2012, 08:59 PM Great stuff, also let's recycle these wastes and what can't be recycled can be burned as fuel :)
Also one more thing, since the Islamist came to power, just like Islam forbid the alcohol they're going to ban also Islam said al nazafa men al 2eman so I'm waiting to see Egypt sparklingly clean too :D ohh the future is going to be great isA
Azmat January 8th, 2012, 09:01 PM If we turned all our garbage into biogas we'd be able to fuel the whole nation. Egypt produces incredible amounts of garbage everyday.

xAbd0o January 8th, 2012, 09:03 PM LOL yea but I bed you half that if not more can be recycled we're just too lazy to seperate things
Azmat January 8th, 2012, 09:05 PM True, the government should promote recycling and make it easier for people to recycle. Here in Sweden it's easier to recycle than not recycle.

egypt69 January 10th, 2012, 03:11 AM Egyptian society is so dysfunctional and uncaring, that I have lost hope in a feasible recycling program ever working.
Montrealers you back me on this one..do you see how incredibly organized garbage and recycling is here in Canada? ONCE A WEEK only...you but a maximum of 2 bags of garbage outside your house..and boxes of recycling separated into cardboards/paper and plastic bottles/cans. The municipality distributed calenders each year to households with garbage collection dates.
I can NEVER even begin to imagine something like that happening in Egypt, let alone a city like Cairo.

Why it's not possible? Money makes power, the more you invest, the more efficient your society will be which Mubarak policy denied on his people. I mean, he cared more about his assets more than the country. Even if Cairo is beautiful nowadays, look at 40 years ago, the video that circulated and showed Cairo in the 60's... Who would believe it? Let's not deny, Ganzoury giving the order to clean Cairo streets is the first we hear about such initiative. Egypt garbage and recyle system ( last one was abolished under Mubarak) needs a revolution , we need a whole new system. If the revolution taught us something, it would be for the sake of the country. If there's a time to imagine, it's now... Ganzoury is such a respectable man, it's just the fact that the country is running out of money. Apparently Ganzoury have a dream about the country and he has a plan about it, he knows what he's doing, but the unstability of the country is making the economy struggling so every decision taken is based on what is disposable. If el Gouna can do it, Egypt can learn from el Gouna and do it, nuff said.
egypt69 January 11th, 2012, 10:29 PM Comparing El Gouna to Cairo? Common man let's be real....
xAbd0o January 11th, 2012, 10:32 PM I said if they can do it why can't it happen all over Egypt? you just need decent planing to the project.
egypt69 January 12th, 2012, 12:10 AM No it's not just "decent planning", that's a part of it, more importantly it's the mentality of millions of people that has to change, people have to care
Wust El Balad January 12th, 2012, 12:31 AM Welll guys, we have no choice to change the face of Egypt. If it's not for us, it'll be for the economic boost and tourism... Foreign countries needs to know that egyptians are ready to change. If one thing was approached to us during the last years, was the way we didn't care about the country but for the money.

Last time I checked the vast of majority of Egyptians want to change otherwise they wouldn't of made a revolution ...
This is kind of off-topic but I have been told that now if you try to hand a bribe they basically expose the fact you're trying to bribe someone and kick you out of the building take that for a start.
egypt69 January 14th, 2012, 07:43 PM Abdo, despite the few millions in the revolution, the majority still don't really give a crap about littering. When I was there this summer it was worse than before....it's sad, but we have to admit it.

xAbd0o January 15th, 2012, 01:28 AM Who cares? They'll learn sooner or later it's not rocket science. Look at the turn out in the elections day. They want a better future for Egypt and thus they'll do the effort to learn.
Not to mention that the majority of the Egyptian population are young/middle age and that all what matters.

eskandarany January 17th, 2012, 03:33 AM It's ALL about education, pride and strategy. A renaissance only happens in the next generation (maybe I can squeeze in since I still haven't started to work? :D) the key is that cute kid right there which had been neglected before, and whoever tried to wipe out illiteracy, for example, would be stopped (عشان المادام كانت عايزة تحتكر مشروع محو الأمية لوحدها) we no longer have this excuse and need to start educating properly. We have great teaching in universities, but where is the implementation? The employment? The small businesses? The infrastructure? The foresight? etc.
xAbd0o January 17th, 2012, 07:56 PM ^^ I agree, especially the part where you described them as cute
No seriously, education is a serious factor. I really hope that our next Education, Research and Higher Education Minister/s is/are technocrat/s.

It's not like the actual people will never change... It's all about following what the society does ....
eskandarany January 19th, 2012, 09:07 PM The current one is terrible. Technocrat is a funny word, too. Ganzouri's govt calls itself technocrat, I call them فلول - even if they weren't officially in the party (which they probably were, nobody knows), they were very close to the old regime. And have proven their incompetency. Anyone high-ranking should be banned from government and official establishments.
xAbd0o January 19th, 2012, 09:37 PM I know this is going to sound hypocritical but let's live with the hope that after 25jan there mentality isn't the same and they understand "their mistake". So far they have been somehow progressing in a not bad manner. Let's see what they'll do until they're kicked out.

Essam Sharaf wasn't a foloul.... He didn't even have time to do something....
xAbd0o January 19th, 2012, 10:14 PM ^^ he was a transport minster if I remember correctly.

Balcony games don't count man, my uncle was chucking (بومبة)s off the balcony last ramadan :D
xAbd0o January 21st, 2012, 02:23 AM ^^ ROFL, I have to admit that I used to do that too :P so much fun especially when someone is passing by you throw it and go hide under your bed  I should of installed a secret camera and put the reactions on YouTube :P
If El Gouna can do what?
I read somewhere that el Gouna is one of the greenest and cleanest cities in Egypt, so I'm just saying if one city can be green and clean why can't other cities learn :D
