But privatization of telecoms, media and aviation is overdue. Local investors are not allowed in those sectors (well, not completely), and that's really damaging to the country.

^^
Correction,
There is no restriction on private media. Mimi Sbehatu (former VOA) journalist, for example, has her on FM station. No media ownership is allowed to politicians - which makes sense. Birhanu Nega, however & funny enough, was the only politician who attempted to have one....Duh!!

Meleskachew detained on May 27 by federal police for alleged possession of illegal broadcasting equipment. He was held in detention at the Customs Authority compound for 12 days before posting bail and had been on trial for several weeks.

He was one of more than 30 shareholders in Addis Broadcasting Corporation, a company formed in 1998 by Berhanu Nega and others with equipment donated by Norway to open the first private FM radio station in Ethiopia.

Ethiopia licenses first private FM radio stations. Mimi Sebhatu to operate one

Ethiopia has issued its first broadcasting licenses allowing private radio stations to operate in the Horn of Africa nation, officials said.

The licenses were issued to two radio stations which will broadcast on FM, following a decision reached in February, according to Sissay Melese, spokesman for the Ethiopian Broadcast Authority (EBA).

"We have issued licenses for two private stations," Sissay Melese told AFP. "These stations will have to be operational within the next 12 months if they don't want to lose their licence."

The stations, Zami Public Connections and Tinsae Fine Arts, were selected from among 12 contenders on the basis of their financial status and programme content, Sissay said.........

No restrictions on private media? Are you kidding me??? How many private TV stations exist? A big fat ZERO is the answer. How many private radios? I only know of Mimi Sebhatu's station, and everyone knows she's pro-EPRDF. Only private print media is allowed, and even then you have to self-censor.

And no, it doesn't make sense that politicians can't have radio stations or other media. Why the heck not? EPRDF sure has a monopoly on TV and radio :|

Are you serious? I thought you know this better than anyone elese.

Don't be spontaneous & echo what other losers are crying for. Get your facts correct first...the link below will help you to know more about Mimi. At least try to give some respect to her father who gave you Bihere Tsige Garden for free. There is no reason for her to beg EPRDF....it's in her family blood to do something good for that country. They did it before & they are doing it now.

Mimi Sebhatu used to work at VOA with a relative of mine who is still there. I know more than enough about her.

Mass privatization, free media & press is the most economical and democratic solution.

But we all know that. Abesha, tell us more!

He is talking about the local media, which is controled by TPLF. Since when the majority of Ethiopians have satelite dish?

Typical Habesha mentality. When you support something, your support is blind. When you oppose something, your opposition is blind. No sense of nuance or objectivity whatsoever.

After all the denials, I found the irony here hilarious:
