But privatization of telecoms, media and aviation is overdue. Local investors are not allowed in those sectors (well, not completely), and that's really damaging to the country.

There is no restriction on private media. Mimi Sbehatu (former VOA) journalist, for example, has her on FM station. No media ownership is allowed to politicians - which makes sense. Birhanu Nega, however & funny enough, was the only politician who attempted to have one....Duh!!
Meleskachew detained on May 27 by federal police for alleged possession of illegal broadcasting equipment. He was held in detention at the Customs Authority compound for 12 days before posting bail and had been on trial for several weeks.
He was one of more than 30 shareholders in Addis Broadcasting Corporation, a company formed in 1998 by Berhanu Nega and others with equipment donated by Norway to open the first private FM radio station in Ethiopia.

Ethiopia has issued its first broadcasting licenses allowing private radio stations to operate in the Horn of Africa nation, officials said.
The licenses were issued to two radio stations which will broadcast on FM, following a decision reached in February, according to Sissay Melese, spokesman for the Ethiopian Broadcast Authority (EBA).
"We have issued licenses for two private stations," Sissay Melese told AFP. "These stations will have to be operational within the next 12 months if they don't want to lose their licence."
The stations, Zami Public Connections and Tinsae Fine Arts, were selected from among 12 contenders on the basis of their financial status and programme content, Sissay said.........
