A group of protesters from Occupy Liverpool has taken over an empty city centre building.
The protesters, who were camped on St George's Plateau, occupied Tinlings Building on the corner of Crosshall Street and Victoria Street on Sunday.
One of the group, James Adams, said they would stay "as long as possible".
Merseyside Police said patrols were giving the area "passing attention" to ensure there was no disruption to traffic or pedestrians.
Mr Adams said: "There are about 20 of us in here.
"We're here for an occupation and at the moment we are trying to make the place more liveable and communal."
'Establish intentions'
A police spokesman said: "Merseyside Police is aware that a group of people entered a building in Crosshall Street on Sunday, 8 January and are currently remaining inside.
"Officers have been trying to speak to members of the group to establish what their intentions are.
"Efforts have also been made to liaise with the owner of the building itself, which was unoccupied at the time."
The protesters set up camp in Liverpool in November at the Lime Street end of William Brown Street, part of Liverpool world heritage site's Cultural Quarter.
They said they were supporting the protests that began on Wall Street and spread to London's St Paul's Cathedral and other cities.

What a load of shit, get a job! Or do something constructive, do they really think anyone who they want to influence knows or gives a shit about them or their cause? Pathetic. Change has to happen from the inside out

This seems to have very little to do with the Occupy movement, more just good old fashioned squatting. No opinion either way really but it doesn't need to be in the news.

Such an important building to occupy. I'm sure it'll have a major effect on everyone in the city.

Protesters occupy Liverpool office building

PROTESTERS from the Occupy movement have taken over an office building in Liverpool city centre.

Around 20 demonstrators who had been camped on St George’s Plateau took over the Tinlings building and aim to stay there “as long as possible”, according to the BBC (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-merseyside-16473068).

The Liverpool Echo reported (http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/liverpool-news/local-news/2012/01/09/occupy-liverpool-protestors-in-stand-off-with-merseyside-police-over-magistrates-court-move-100252-30083742/) that the police had become involved in a stand-off with the anti-capitalism protestors in the former council offices.

The occupation mimics action taken by other Occupy protestors. Late last year, protestors took over a former UBS building near the City of London and turned it into the Bank of Ideas (http://offices.org.uk/news/london-bank-of-ideas-sun-street-12022375.html).

Dreamer, it's easy to be cynical, I know, but as an urbanist I am pleased that this group is highlighting the scandal of good buildings being just left to rot, especially when some people are without homes. The fact that the housing market has left a lot of people behind and many people like myself just cannot afford to buy is a deeply unfair situation.

Secondly there's no jobs to be got. Inequality in the UK is at a record high. Maybe we dopn't notice that in Liverpool as much as you would were you to live in the south east, but nevertheless the occupy movement is drawing peoples' attention (successfully) to the inequities of global capitalism and its unfair outcomes, do you think people should not stand up and be counted and just put their heads back in their desks? This movement has had considerable success, in London the Church of England has moved to criticising the banking system and even the right wing government is being forced to listen, regulation of the financial system is very much on the agenda.

The freedoms that we enjoy in today's society didn't just happen by chance, no they were the result of pressure being forced against vested interests by people fighting for what is fair and what is right.

I would suggest that this group need a big banner that they can hang on the outside of the building so people can honk their horns as they pass.

Direct action is having more of an impact than some people realise. Traditional political parties like Labour and the Lib Dems no longer represent the interests of ordinary people or progressive causes, so people are doing politics for themselves. In my opinion this is a positive move. For a generation people have looked for answers in political structures like the next Labour government, and when this hasn't worked its has led to disillusionment and cynicsm about politics, people have just simply switched off and a lot of people have become disenfranchised. What these groups are doing is leading the churches and political parties from without, politicians being the servants of the people are forced to listen.

It's in the news because it's having an impact nationally and internationally. Do you think that David Cameron got up one day and decided to reform the financial system? No, the reason he and his right wing chums are proposing legislation in the Queen's Speech is because they are being forced to by the public. Demonstrators have kept this issue on the agenda and prevented the government kicking it into the long grass. I'm proud to say that Liverpool is part of this global movement that started in Manhattan rather than some dreary provincial backwater.

Put the squirrel in the dreadful, dreary, depressing Tinlings buildings for a while. It'll emerge with its tail between its legs within a week, as will the protestors.

Whereas 'they' will go home quite quickly if everyone just ignores them.

In the 60's 70's and early 80's it was ususal for squats to be set up, sometimes out of opportunism on other occasions to highlight a cause. It's not my sort of thing but I have sympathy for people who are protesting against big business, let's face it no one else will speak out which is a shame. Desperate Scousewife airheads and wannabees are boring and Conservative, I'm glad we still have people who question the status quo, that's healthy.

Sounds like Occupy Leeds which lasted a grand total of..... two months. Comrades were hardcore! ;) haha

This does just sound like squatting. I had several arguments with the Leeds lot trying to get it through their thick skulls that was they were doing was illegal and if they really wanted to spread the word and fight the good fight then they should go knocking door to door and talk to the general public.

That would have been too much like hard work. Oddly, they would get a lot more sympathy, too, if they did such a thing.
