Everglades Hotel to implode
A Miami landmark built in 1926 is set to be demolished in January.
Cabi Developers said it will implode the 17-story Everglades Hotel, at 244 Biscayne Blvd., to make way for its Everglades on the Bay condominium.
The mixed-use project is to include two 49-story towers with 851 flats, lofts and other residences, plus 65,000 square feet of ground-floor retail space.
The retail space is to be accessible via a walkway through the center of the building.
Cabi said the first phase of construction will be complete in 2006.
finally its going to happen----
fyi-dubai has 2 1400ft towers u/c in miami were begging for an 800 ft tower

nimbyhater November 2nd, 2004, 03:37 AM yep, thats it
man, i hate to see this one go, miami doesnt have that many historic old skol new york/chicago type skysrapers and i hate to see one go for everglades, which aint that great, im gonna have to go against my sn and say i wish everglades wasnt hapning, i dont think its worth losing this building, which is rite on the bay, i mean, the number of building that are goin up, plus they prob just woulda built it somewhere else anyways, this wasnt necesary, i dont wanna c this building go, even if it is kinda crappy, we can spruce it up a bit... a nice restoration project like they did wit the capitol building...
but too late now, this is happeneing and there aint no way to stop it, just seems like a shame to me
Jasonhouse November 2nd, 2004, 05:11 AM Folks, it is still highly recommended that all development news for the Miami area be placed in the development thread for that corresponding submarket.
Remember, every new thread created knocks another thread off the bottom of the page.
brickell November 2nd, 2004, 07:26 AM Since the thread is already here...
Yes, that's the Everglades shown in the pictures. It was reclad in the 60's rather badly. It retains little of it's original charm in my opinion. It's a prime location across from the park. I am sad to see it go, but I thin the Everglades condo will be a decent replacement.
here's a couple of pictures from the web:

The Mad Hatter!! November 2nd, 2004, 11:35 PM how can you choose the everglades hotel over evgd.on the bay, evgd on the bay has to be rated like 5 out of all the projects going on.but if they could of restored the hotel to look like the biltmore or how it was in its glory day it would look great.
the oil rich fucks in dubai have 2 1400ft towers going up while in miami were still hoping for an 800 ft.stop hogging all the new tall building you rich oil bastards.
nimbyhater November 2nd, 2004, 11:50 PM i still think to give up this historic building thats 80 years old, for another condo, i just dont think its rite, 40 years from now, when our skyline is amazing, but has no history, were gonna wish we still had this one, a restoration project on this would b great
The Mad Hatter!! November 2nd, 2004, 11:55 PM i got another idea we restore the everglades and next to it the new everglades showing how the old becomes the new
Dale November 3rd, 2004, 12:31 AM To a very large extent, Miami is making its history *now*.
brickell November 3rd, 2004, 05:53 AM great point dale.
south florida dave November 3rd, 2004, 06:00 AM that's exactly how i see it, dale. the current boom will shape miami as much (possibly more than) any period in the past.
pretty freakin cool, ain't it?
ChuckScraperMiami#1 November 5th, 2004, 02:47 AM BOOM BOOM BOOM, I'll get back in my Room !, I Feel Great , BUILD MIAMI, I'm running out of Building Blocks, lol.
nimbyhater November 6th, 2004, 08:12 PM the current boom is history, and is more than anything in the past, but we still cant sacrifice the past for it
Bobdreamz November 6th, 2004, 08:35 PM well the major problem with the Everglades hotel is that the current owners have allowed it to fall into such disrepair that the property has become functionally obsolete in economic terms.
Similar to the situation with the Dupont Plaza.
The other factor is that it sits on a premium site on Biscayne Boulevard.

BUT BOBDreamz :) , They can clean that up, They are Developers that know what they are doing, and SMART . Its going to happen the FIRST The Everglades on the Bay Tower will start in MAY, 2005, NO doubt about it, and The DUPONT PLAZA ,WEST Condo Tower will go up FIRST starting in JUNE, 2005. They are Going FORWARD and they can Settle their Problems with NO DELAYS.
SkyDiveJunkee November 7th, 2004, 01:55 AM The biggest travesty in the name of progress was when New York City allowed the demolition of the old Waldorf-Astoria hotel. It was in ALL its glory and far more beautiful than the Everglades hotel. But I'm sure no one really cares now considering the Empire State Building is the most famous skyscraper in the world.
streetscapeer November 7th, 2004, 05:08 AM good analogy!
