Pakistan, China pledge to develop strong Media
BEIJING: Information Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed met a top-ranking leader of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Liu Yunshan here on Tuesday and discussed ways and means to further develop bilateral cooperation in various fields.
The two sides particularly reviewed their cooperation in the media affairs. They pledged to join hands for developing a strong press to counter hostile propaganda by the vested interests.
They decided to take all possible measures for strengthening their media network, ensuring unbiased and objective media coverage of various events and developments, taking place at regional and international levels. The two leaders, during an hour-long meeting held at Great Hall of the People, renewed their commitment to further promote their bilateral relations in all areas of mutual interest.
Liu, a senior member of political bureau of the Central Committee of the CPC, said the party fully supports government-to-government level cooperation between the two countries. The two leaders emphasised that the electronic and print media of the two countries should have regular exchange of information and media groups to strengthen their cooperation for proper projection of their views and position on various issues.
They emphasised that the media should coordinate in improving the existing news network at the levels of television, radio and news agencies that help to promote people-to-people contacts and present the national events in their true perspective.
Liu, who also looks after media affairs in the party, expressed his pleasure that a media delegation comprising senior journalists was visiting China and hoped it would be successful in consolidating the bonds of friendship. China, he said, attached great importance to its relations with Pakistan and wished to see their strong partnership ever growing in all areas of bilateral interest. Rashid reassured that Pakistan will continue to support China on the issues of human rights, Taiwan and Tibet. He also briefed the Chinese leader about Pakistan’s role for peace and countering terrorism. He said President Pervez Musharraf and his government were committed to promote peace, laying greater emphasis on economic development.
Earlier in the morning, the minister visited the headquarters of China’s state-run news agency Xinhua and held detailed talks with its president Tian Congning. They discussed various proposals to enhance bilateral cooperation between the news agencies of the two countries.
Rashid said the media organisations are required to integrate and pool the news resources for achieving the desired results. He said the media has emerged as a strong weapon in the recent years and its efficient use is imperative to safeguard national and regional interests.
It was agreed during the talks that their news organizations, especially the Xinhua and the Associated Press of Pakistan (APP), should strengthen their interaction to project the events of national and regional importance in their true perspective, taking in view ground realities.
They proposed that the Xinhua and APP should establish special desks at their respective headquarters to focus on efficient and prompt coverage of the reports, relating to the Asia-Pacific region that also help to further promote their bilateral ties.
Rashid said China has rich potential to play a leading role in the development of "a reliable and credible" news network for projecting their common interest. He said the Asian countries should prepare to defend themselves in the wake of negative and hostile propaganda by the vested interests in the West. Tian agreed with the minister that the media has assumed a special importance after September 11 incident for presenting a correct picture of the new developments. He accepted the invitation extended to him by the information minister to visit Pakistan soon and to review their ongoing cooperation in the information sector.
