hala November 2nd, 2004, 05:26 PM Looks Great
Seriously, I’ve never seen any renovation like that before.
samsonyuen November 2nd, 2004, 06:00 PM Wow, looks so much better. Only in Singapore could they do something like this. Who are its tenants?
Insane alex November 2nd, 2004, 09:12 PM The cladding is real nice, i love it! :D
CborG November 2nd, 2004, 11:55 PM its not unusual to redesign an old tower, they are gonna do in in Rotterdam too, but the final result of this tower looks very good
redstone November 3rd, 2004, 04:47 PM Currently empty, scheduled for completion in 2005. :D
Fragmentor November 3rd, 2004, 05:43 PM wow, that a transformation!
officedweller November 4th, 2004, 03:17 AM Nice!
Recladding can be done, it's just very expensive.
In Vancouver, The Burrard Building was reclad in the 1980s, the BC Hydro Building (now the Electra condos) reclad in the 1990s and the Uniglobe Building was reclad last year. All were modernist curtain walls with relatively short windows and large opaque spandrel panels - in each case, the new curtain walls made the windows bigger (as well as introducing double glazing) and reduced the size of the spandrel panels (and for the Burrard and Uniglobe buildings, changed the spandrels to mirrored glass). The recladding of the Burrard Building destroyed the original architecture and was a trajegy to some.
huaiwei November 4th, 2004, 04:05 AM Currently empty, scheduled for completion in 2005. :D
Er..you sure its empty? Where did all the tenants go meanwhile then?
redstone November 4th, 2004, 04:07 AM I think so...
Isn't it?
In the first few pictures, you can see inside the building.
fcarvall November 6th, 2004, 02:44 PM I always wonder if in 30 years people will be disgusted by the buildings built in the 90s and 00s, just like WE are disgusted by the ones built in the 70s. Just a thought. Were they BAD design, or are we not giving them enough time to grow on us, or age, or come of age? I know for a fact people after the art-nouveau phase hated the buildings, and now every city in the world that appreciates itself claims to have at least one art nouveau... even if it was built 30 years AFTER the fashion had faded (in the case of my hometown Santiago). AnyWHO!
RafflesCity November 7th, 2004, 07:20 PM how nice to see the effect of months of pics condensed into one - the transformation is amazing!
but this reclad is a must, the original building was just a blight on the views from the harbour looking towards Supreme Court & City Hall - but not anymore;)
redstone November 8th, 2004, 04:21 AM Not that its neighbour, High Street Plaza also had been recladded. :)
Dr. Dubai November 8th, 2004, 07:17 AM that looks nice, I wish they did the same with Bisonspoor (Holland).

That is actually an interesting tot which I have delibrated over before. I do wonder if people 30 years ago have a liking for concrete columns to the extend of building so many concrety structures all over, the bane of skyscraper lovers today! ;)
Avatar November 8th, 2004, 08:19 AM Can I say that is the best skyscraper renovation I have seen ever!
Why can't Sydney do the same with all its crap 1970s buildings.. I guess for some misguided reason here, they actually think they look good as they are.
The results of this makeover speak for themselves - they should put this once ugly duckling on an architectual extreme makeover show and show what a stunner can be created with application of some slick looking reflective glass.
Avatar November 8th, 2004, 08:20 AM BTW, what is that skeletal UFO that appears to be landing?

That's the New Supreme Court designed by Sir Norman Foster.
If you pop over to the ''Singapore's MRT & LRT'' thread in the ''Subways & Urban Transport'' section, you will find another one of Sir Norman Foster's ''UFOs'' on top of the ''CG1 Expo Station'' on the subway network.

Should I say again that I absolutely HATE that ufo??? :D
Well thank God for this facelift so nearby thou, or else I would think our civic district has just been captured by alien forces and will become a no-go area for me. ;)

Þróndeimr January 4th, 2005, 12:27 PM Nice reconstruction, far better than the original version.
7 World Trade January 14th, 2005, 06:54 PM to tell u the truth, this is the best reconstruction of a skyscraper i've ever seen. it finally gave that building a better sign of life. the original design sure makes the building looks so dead...but not anymore with the glass.
personally, i don't support the reconstruction of a building just because its design is outta fashion unless it looks so dull it ruins its surroundings. and this building was definitely one of them.

THT-United January 17th, 2005, 10:07 AM Brilliant job of transforming a derelict 70s office tower into a spanking "new" one... Amazing!
In PJ, one good example is the MCIS Zurich Insurance... This one is also another 70s fugly that was completely made-over in 2000 and now comes with roman pillars and blue glass... I'll try to get some pix of the then and now view of this building...
Van der Rohe January 17th, 2005, 10:49 AM hmmm, I prefer the previous facade...
rark January 17th, 2005, 02:41 PM i sure think they did a great job.. the rendering looks so much like the final
Peter The Great January 17th, 2005, 04:25 PM The old tower was hideous...it's like an ugly duckling turning into a swan.

chex January 26th, 2005, 08:32 AM really great redesign!!!! and great pics as well!! i loved that round shaped tower...
Pengui January 26th, 2005, 10:14 AM The round-shaped tower is Swissotel Stamford. It used to be Asia's tallest hotel when it was finished in 1986, at 226m ;-)
RafflesCity January 26th, 2005, 12:58 PM The round-shaped tower is Swissotel Stamford. It used to be Asia's tallest hotel when it was finished in 1986, at 226m ;-)
the world's tallest ^^
Pengui January 26th, 2005, 03:09 PM Asia's tallest tower then ?
THT-United January 26th, 2005, 03:27 PM If i'm not mistaken, the Swissotel (ex-Westin) Stamford was the world's tallest hotel until it was overtaken by Jin Mao Center (not all hotel) and Burj Al Arab (world's 2nd tallest all-hotel building)... Of course, the current no. 1 is that rotten pointy-head in Pyongyang...
I stayed in the hotel when it was still a Westin (55th floor, if i'm not mistaken) and the views from that balcony were superb! Until today, that remains the highest ever balcony i have stayed in...

the brown part looks like some square cap shading over the whole building... the 'old' building gives me a 'chinese feel'... but its sad that the old building could never be seen again...but again, the new reclad thing really looks brillant... looks very modern... and the real building looks so much better then the model...
jus a thought... why is glass so often used as clading in alot of buildings nowadays? back then, no cladding was often seen, only 'concert cladding'....as in the context of Singapore... not too sure abt other countries...
RafflesCity May 11th, 2005, 03:49 PM but its sad that the old building could never be seen again...but again, the new reclad thing really looks brillant... looks very modern...
I guess it looked suitable for its time, when the surroundings were almost like slums, but it just looks like an eyesore today thats why it has been recladded. At least we know its still the same 'person' in 'disguise' :D
