Phase 2 of the 'Upper Egypt Freeway' project (east bank) was completed last October. This road starts at Helwan (south of Cairo) and is now open to Assiut.

Nice one! How did you manage to grab them?
This is the network as it stands (approximately):

Great stuff indeed, I can see a standard been built here, just like the UK 3 lanes x 2 sides is the minimum standard for a highway.

Though in the Cairo-Alex they had two lanes each side for emergency services, since we are still building the country and the area is almost desert can we take advantage and make that standard for the whole country? That would be nice.

Ah and ya basha you posted the thread in the wrong section :D BTW I noticed that you put freeway I know that's the Arabic way of saying it but is that any different from a highway or a motorway?

A freeway is basically a highway but for faster vehicles.

Very, very nice. Love the signs.

Egypt's main highway networks are catching up with the times.

Finally Egypt is building proper motorways... and far too slowly (compare our progress to Algeria and Morocco تتحسّر على حالنا) - an illustration of how much we waste our capabilities is that we built a large chunk of Algeria's new East-West Motorway!

By the way what you mentioned about british motorways being 3×3 is false; they are mostly 2×2, but have good hard shoulders. Only some are 3×3 or more.

As for 'freeway' it's because Egypt (from what I gather from news reports) has three standards:
طريق عادي normal road (which I split into صحراوي vs زراعي) <- these are terrible, except for a few new desert ones.
طريق مزدوج dual carriageway
طريق حرّ freeway
currently the only طرق حرة of which I am aware is طريق الصعيد (شرق النيل)ـ and الطريق الدائري (للقاهرة)ـ and طريق مصر-الإسكندرية (الصحراوي)ـ and the rest are طرق مزدوجة. Planned for upgrade are طريق وادي النطرون and طريق اسكندرية-مطروح-السلوم and طريق اسكندرية-دمياط-بورسعيد and a new road (partially completed) called الطريق الدائري الإقليمي or something like that (Cairo regional ring road).

Kol she2 bewa2to ya 3am.... We don't have a metropolitan road to connect all these road for god sake..... I don't even understand what's the deal of making all these roads when we have nothing to connect them all.

The naming is so boring, can they have things like M1, A1, B1 and so on?

Also no all British highways are at least 3 lanes each side. They're called Motorways and the names are usually Mx. The two lanes are Ax type of ways and they are not motorways.

Again, what you say about britain isn't true. It is in fact wasteful to build 3×3s everywhere. Most of the M6, for example, is 2×2.
As for the naming, I think there is a system in a drawer somewhere but it doesn't matter. What matters is that they start abiding by international safety standards.

Wust El Balad, what do you mean there is nothing to join these roads?

Not true. The whole M6 is 3 lanes each side. The max speed is 70mph. The motorway exits to the A network at different junctions (2 lane and 50mph network). But the M6 is a 3 lane motorway. BTW I take this motorway to London :P

There is only one motorway in the whole UK that part of it is two lanes and from what I'm hearing its been upgraded or something similar.
