Monorail a step closer to reality

May 9, 2008

NEW DELHI: The monorail and light rail transit (LRT) system have moved a step forward. Delhi Integrated Multi-Modal Transit System (DIMTS) put forward a techno-economic feasibility study on the projects before Delhi government on Thursday paving the way for beginning a detailed project report (DPR) to assess its execution. The three lines of LRT and three monorail corridors are estimated to cost Rs 5,738 crore and Rs 6,893 crore respectively.

The DPR is expected to take six months. Only after the DPR gives a positive signal will the government take the next step to issue request for qualification documents inviting applicants interested in the high cost projects. A request for proposals will follow and finally the job will be assigned to the selected party. Even if all goes well, the monorail and LRT projects will only start by middle of 2009 and unlikely to be available to the public before the Commonwealth Games in 2010.

As per the proposal, the three monorail corridors include Rohini Sector-21-Red Fort, Kalyanpuri-Pul Mithai and Delhi University-Gulabi Bagh. The LRT is proposed between Mehrauli-Badarpur, Mehrauli-Dwarka Sector-21 and Mehrauli-Sachivalay.

The monorail corridor between Rohini Sector-21 and Red Fort will cover Budh Vihar, Rohini (west), Gulabi Bagh, New Delhi railway station, Red Fort via Pitampura, Shalimar Bagh, Ashok Vihar, Karol Bagh, Paharganj and Daryaganj. This corridor is expected to cost Rs 4,252 crore.

The second corridor between Kalyanpuri and Pul Mithai near Red Fort will cater to congested areas of east Delhi like Patparganj, Geeta Colony and then cross the river Yamuna via Shanti Van touching base with the Red Fort and the Old Delhi railway station and is expected to cost about Rs 2,155 crore.

The corridor from Delhi University which will end at Gulabi Bagh will cross through Shakti Nagar, Kamla Nagar and Guru Teg Bahadur Marg. This will cost an estmated Rs 486 crore. As far as the light rail transit system is concerned, it is estimated that the three lines proposed will cost about Rs 5,738 crore put together. Line A from Mehrauli to Badarpur along the Mehrauli-Badarpur Road will stretch over 11.5 kilometres and is expected to cost about Rs 1,782 crore.

Line B, to stretch over 17.5 kilometres from Mehrauli to Dwarka Sector-22 via Andheria More, Vasant Kunj and Mahipalpur, will cost about Rs 1,881 crore. Line C from Mehrauli to Sachivalay will be spread over 16 kilometres. It will touch base with Aurobindo Marg, Siri Fort, National Stadium, Tilak Marg and Indraprastha Marg.

Delhi govt went slow on monorail because of CWG and other ongoing infra projects. Later on the plan was revived but with alterations. A 40 km long corridor was proposed which somewhat seems to be an amalgamation of corridors proposed earlier.

Kondli-Rohini corridor may have mono rail

Feb 20, 2011

The Delhi government is again exploring the possibility of monorail transport to lessen traffic congestion. Delhi government chief secretary, Rakesh Mehta, has asked the transport department to do a fresh feasibility study of the project. Said Mehta, "Once the feasibility and viability study is completed, an investment decision will be taken based on it. A detailed project report (DPR) could then be undertaken."

The re-look at the monorail project comes after the RITES study on traffic problems in the city suggested the monorail in congested areas or places with severe right of way (ROW) constraints. Said a senior transport department official, "The study has suggested three corridors but we will be looking to undertake the feasibility study on only the Kondli-Rohini corridor." The reason for opting for this corridor, said the official, was the presence of the Metro in phase III in the other two corridors. Added the official, "The DPR should be undertaken in another two-three months."

The corridor is expected to be 40km long and will be going through Delhi Gate, though the alignment will not be touching Daryaganj or the Red Fort area. According to sources in the department, the alignment will instead head towards Rohini after Delhi Gate via Kamla Market.

Mehta said: "A number of factors will be taken into account before we take a call on the monorail project. While studies show that it will be 30% less expensive than the Metro, the passenger-carrying capacity is also half of that of the Metro. But it's a better option for congested areas." Interestingly, the suggestion for the monorail has been shot down due to its high cost by both the DMRC and those lobbying for the integrated transport corridor (high capacity bus or BRT). Mehta admitted that a significant number of members of the special task force (transport), which has been specifically set up to look at transport alternatives, is against the monorail project. "But the government wants to do an independent feasibility study before taking any decision," said Mehta.

The differences between the monorail and Metro are significant, and not just cost-wise. While on the Metro 30,000 passengers per hour can travel one way, on the monorail the capacity is just 15,000. Also, the speed is only 20-30kmph on the monorail while it is 25-40kmph on the Metro. However, one advantage that monorail has over the Metro is that the Metro needs at least a 30-40m wide road for construction, while for the monorail, only 15-25m wide roads are needed.

But with high costs involved - sources say the Kondli-Rohini corridor has been estimated at over Rs 8,000 crore - the government will need to look at alternate financial models to undertake the project, if it is accepted. Said an official, "The funding will have to be generated through PPP (public private partnership) or BOT (build operate transfer)."

Simultaneously, another short monorail link was being proposed to connect upcoming business hub at Baprola in west Delhi with Delhi metro's blue line. This link is likely to be shelved because of viability reasons.

Monorail to link Baprola Knowledge Park, the business hub

22 JUN, 2011

The first monorail link in the capital may come up in West Delhi providing connectivity to far-flung areas like Baprola, which is still off the metro map, but is being groomed to be the next big business hub.

The monorail will be a crucial mode of transport to Baprola , which will house the hitech knowledge park. This area is beyond the Dwarka metro station, the last stop on the DMRC Line 3.

The Delhi State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation (DSIIDC) has commissioned RITES as consultant to carry out a techno-economic feasibility study and a detailed project report. The proposal will then be placed before the state government for consideration.

Spread over 63.97 acres, the Baprola project will provide room for industry and provide direct employment to over 1 lakh people and indirect employment to 1,70,000 people. A housing complex spread over 4.9 acres may also come up here.

RITES will prepare a feasibility report on the 4.5-km alignment between the Dwarka Mor metro station to the site of the knowledge industry hub. The consultant is expected to deliver its report by August 15. The corporation will be paying RITES almost Rs 1 crore to get the feasibility and detailed project reports.

The preliminary report shows that once the complex becomes functional in three to four year's time, peak movement on this monorail link could be as high as 80,000. The proposed alignment seeks to link the Dwarka metro station, which will connect the business hub with Connaught Place. Also, this will also serve as a link to the airport Metro line. Connectivity to business hubs and airport will facilitate movement to the Baprola knowledge Park, senior officials said.

Once ready, the monorail proposal will need the approval of the state and necessary clearances and coordination with various agencies like DDA, DMRC and approvals from Delhi Urban Arts Commission . Only then, will the project take off.

The Baprola complex will be developed on a 'green-building' concept and is likely to come up at a cost of over Rs 1500 crore. It is proposed to be developed on a self-financing model. The proposal has already been cleared by the state government. DSIIDC is in the process of finalizing the architectural consultant to prepare final drawings and layout of the project. Meanwhile, the corporation has put up the proposal before the Delhi Development Authority for land-use related approvals.

The corporation is hopeful that construction on the complex site should begin by this year-end . The project which is to be developed in two phases is expected to give the capital a knowledge park and gems and jewellery hub and group housing within three to four years after construction begins.

The complex at Baprola will accommodate software industry , IT service industry, ITES Industry, media, business services and educational services as envisaged in Industrial Policy for Delhi 2010-21 .

Baprola link: Monorail unviable, BRT on table

Jan 16, 2012

Declaring the monorail link a financially unviable option, RITES, a transport and infrastructure consultancy, has in a report to the state government recommended that a high speed Bus Road Transit (BRT) elevated corridor should be constructed instead. The report states the BRT will provide easy access to people who choose to travel to far-flung areas like Baprola which is ahead of the Dwarka Mor Metro station. If the government accepts these recommendations then Delhi will be the first city in the country to boast of an elevated BRT.

The Delhi State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation (DSIIDC) had commissioned Rail India Transit & Economic Services (RITES) consultancy to carry out a techno-economic feasibility study and prepare a detailed project report on a mass transit channel that could link the capital with a Knowledge Based Industrial (KBI) hub which is to be set-up at Baprola in west Delhi. The RITES report will now be put before the state government for approval. If the government clears the project, DSIIDC is targetting a completion deadline of 2015.

In its final report submitted to DSIIDC, RITES pointed out that introducing sophisticated transit systems for short length routes is very costly and hence monorail may not be ideal for the 4.5 kilometre long alignment between the Dwarka Modh metro station to the site of the KBI hub. Instead the report states "The bus/road based systems are ideally suited for the last mile connectivity as it is the least costly solution" In its report to DSIIDC, RITES says that having an at grade (on ground) BRT system between Dwarka Metro station and the KBI hub will not be suitable as people living on either sides of the corridor will try to cross the roads which will affect the level of service and bring down travel speed and the image of the system for users.

"In view of these reasons it is recommended to provide a grade separated (elevated) closed bus rapid transit system for the corridor," the report states. RITES suggests developing the BRT corridor in two phases, with the first one covering the distance of 4.5km between Dwarka Metro station to the KBI Park at an estimated cost of Rs 335.62 crore. The next phase, which would extend the corridor to Mundka linking the metro station there from the northwest of Delhi to the KBI hub, is estimated to cost about Rs 403 crore. Both phases taken together would add nearly 12 km of elevated BRT to the city's road transport network.

Spread over 63.97 acres, the KBI complex proposes to make room for industries of the future and provide direct employment to over 1 lakh people and indirect employment to 1,70,000 people. A group housing over 4.9 acres is also proposed here to make some room for providing space for housing within Delhi.

The Baprola complex, developed on a "green building concept," is likely to come up at a cost of over Rs 1,500 crore. It is proposed to be developed on a self financing model. The proposal has already been cleared by the state government and DSIIDC is in the process of finalizing the architectural consultant to prepare the final drawings and layout of the project.

Very recently, Delhi govt. approved Shastri Park - Trilokpuri line in priciple.

Monorail comes calling at east Delhi

Jan 18, 2012

The monorail is all set to come to the crowded east Delhi. In an attempt to decongest the city and get more people to use public transport, the Delhi government has given an in-principle approval to a 10.8km elevated monorail link between Shastri Park Metro station and Trilokpuri via Laxmi Nagar in east Delhi.

This is the first such link in the capital, which is expected to be functional by 2017. In the years to come, the monorail will also roll out in Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore and Jalandhar in Punjab. The monorail is most successful in Japan. Malaysia and the United States of America, too, use monorail extensively in crowded areas.

After giving the in-principle approval, chief minister Sheila Dikshit has now asked the Delhi State Infrastructure and Industrial Development Corporation to prepare a proposal to be tabled in the cabinet for a formal approval. To be developed at a cost of approximately Rs 1,655 crore, the route will have 12 stations and passengers will be able to interchange for three Metro lines.

Delhiites will be able to interchange at Shatri Park Metro station for the Dilshad Garden- Rithala line; at Nirman Vihar Metro station for the Anand Vihar-Dwarka line, and at Trilokpuri Metro station for the under-construction Mukundpur-Yamuna Vihar line.

It is estimated that in 2017, the link will cater to a daily ridership of about 1.5 lakh. The fare structure has been proposed keeping in mind the cost of Metro tickets. For now, the fare is likely to be Rs 2.50 per kilometre. A state-of-the-art, automatic fare collection system will be introduced with ticket vending and smart token systems.

Citing the monorail as a viable solution to decongest crowded areas, a statement from the chief minister's office on Monday stated that the monorail has also been recommended as a mass transit in MPD 2021.

The CM's statement goes on to add that the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has favoured introduction of the monorail in such congested areas where Delhi Metro services are not feasible. It has also been pointed out that laying of the monorail lines is cheaper as compared to Metro lines.

The proposed monorail will be a straddle-type, elevated line that will be able to negotiate sharp curves and high gradient above the narrow roads. Light structures and columns can be placed in the limited median of roads. The rail can be located in crowded streets as it generates very little sound and is environment friendly.

An alignment of the proposed monorail route was also discussed in the meeting chaired by the CM on Tuesday. The route will start from Shastri Park Metro station passing through Yamuna Pushta Road, Rajaram Kohli Marg, Geeta Colony, Patparganj Road, Nirman Vihar Metro station on Vikas Marg, Ganesh Nagar, New Patparganj Road, Sanjay Lake to terminate parallel to connect proposed Trilokpuri Metro station.

Delhi govt gives in-principle approval to mono-rail system

Jan 17, 2012

Commuting through the congested east Delhi may soon become easy with the city government today giving an in-principle approval to a 10.8 km mono-rail system which will be connected to the Metro lines.

The government plans to connect Shastri Park with Laxmi Nagar via Trilokpuri through a mono-rail having 12 stations from where commuters can access the system.

The new system is expected to supplement the existing inter-city transport modes like the Metro. The project is being developed in a way that the new system makes it possible to interchange with three Delhi Metro lines.

The in-principle approval came at a high-level meeting chaired by Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and attended by Ministers A K Walia, Arvinder Singh Lovely and Ramakant Goswami, East Delhi MP Sandeep Dikshit, Chief Secretary P K Tripathi and Principal Secretary Chandaramohan.

"East Delhi will become the first in the city to welcome the introduction of another fast, convenient, dependable and pollution free elevated inter-city new mode of transport. In- principle approval was today given in a high-level meeting presided over by Dikshit," a senior official said.

A presentation based on a study conducted by RITES Ltd on mono-rail was given in the meeting. It was also decided to place this issue before the Cabinet to seek its formal approval to this effect, the official said.

Dikshit said it has been decided that a detailed note will be discussed in a Cabinet meeting to give a formal approval.

The mono-rail is expected to attract a daily ridership of around 1.5 lakh and will be able to provide an inter-city transport service in congested localities in East Delhi where the Delhi Metro and even buses are difficult to ply.

Very good decision by the state government that the monorail project will be implemented by DMRC. Once the monorail will be done there will be common ticketing, adjustment of time table as per metro timings will be possible.
One more good thing to note that Gurgaon Metro will be also having the above said facilities. Obiviously commuters will be getting benefit of all these.

DMRC asked to prepare project report on East Delhi monorail

Press Trust of India / New Delhi August 01, 2012 21:35 IST

Keen to ramp up transport infrastructure, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit today directed Delhi Metro to prepare a detailed project report within three months for construction of mono rail network in East Delhi.

Dikshit said Government has planned to float global tender for the 11-km-long network after DPR is finalised by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation. The DMRC will look after construction and commissioning of the network.

"We will call international tender for the project after finalisation of DPR. We will involve DMRC in the project," the Chief Minister said after a high-level meeting on the ambitious project.

In the first phase, the mono rail network will link Shastri Park with Laxmi Nagar via Trilokpuri and the entire stretch will have a total of 12 stations.

Dikshit said Government was ready to consider extension of approved Mono Rail network to Delhi University, Kashmere Gate and Chandni Chowk which will facilitate large number of students and traders to commute between both sides of river Yamuna.

A presentation on implementation of project was made in the meeting which was attended by Transport Minister Arvinder Singh Lovely and top officials of DMRC and Transport department.

Asking officials to ensure early implementation of the project, Dikshit said the non-polluting Mono rail network would ease traffic congestion in various areas in East Delhi.

The elevated Mono Rail will be plying above congested localities. Moreover, it will be a non-polluting, fast, convenient and modern inter-city transport mode.

Officials said laying of Mono rail network will be much cheaper as compared to construction of Metro network.

They said each mon-rail will have four cars which will initially be brought from Malaysia. Later on the manufacturing will start in India.

The 11-km-long network from Shastri Park will pass through Yamuna Pushta Road, Raja Ram Kohli Marg, New Patpar Ganj Road, Sanjay Nagar Lake before reaching Trilokpuri Metro Station.

The network will be integrated with three Metro lines – Shastri Park Metro Station on Dilshad Garden to Rithala Line, Nirman Vihar Metro Station on Anand Vihar to Dwarka line and Trilokpuri Metro Station on Mukundpur to Yamuna Vihar under construction line.

Stalled monorail project back on track

In a high-level meeting called by the Delhi Government, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Wednesday directed Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) to submit Detailed Project Report (DPR) ofits ambitious ‘monorail’ within three months in order to enable the Government to call for global tenders. The Pioneer on July 26 had reported that monorail project is still on papers and no significant progress has been made till date.

In the meeting, the Chief Minister also made it clear that her Government was ready to consider extension of monorail project to other parts of the city such as Delhi University, Kashmeri Gate and Chandni Chowk areas which were considered as most congested localities. Malaysia-based Scomi International Private Limited is a consortium partner in the Mumbai monorail project, made a presentation on implementation of the project. The meeting was attended by Transport Minister Arvinder Singh, Transport Commissioner R Chandra Mohan, MD of DMRC Mangu Singh and other senior officers.

DMRC will take care of entire construction and commissioning of work as it possesses expertise in the field. The Delhi Government in principle approved the project from Shastri Park Metro Station to Trilokpuri via Gandhi Nagar and Laxmi Nagar on around 11 km route with 12 stations.

The route may be extended towards Vishwavidyala, Kashmere Gate and Chandni Chowk, which will facilitate large number of students and traders to commute between both sides of river Yamuna. This will connect the trading centre at Gandhi Nagar with trading centre at Chandni Chowk. The existing route from Shastri Park Metro Station will pass through Yamuna Pushta Road, Raja Ram Kohli Marg, New Patpar Ganj Road, Sanjay Nagar Lake to terminate parallel to connect Trilokpuri Metro Station. The proposed stations on the approved route are Shastri Park, Kailash Nagar, Gandhi Nagar, Taj Enclave, Geeta Colony, Guru Angad Nagar, Scope Tower, Ganesh Nagar, Mother Dairy, Patpar Ganj, Kotla and Trilokpuri. The already agreed route will integrate with three Metro lines - Shastri Park Metro Station on Dilshad Garden to Rithala Line, Nirman Vihar Metro Station on Anand Vihar to Dwarka line and Trilokpuri Metro Station on Mukundpur to Yamuna Vihar under construction line.

Laying of monorail lines will be much cheaper as compared to Metro lines. The monorail as exhibited in the presentation will have four cars. One car can carry 140 passengers. The cars initially would be manufactured in Malaysia but later on the manufacturing would start in

the country.

Monorail project to start next year (http://articles.timesofindia.indiatimes.com/2012-08-20/delhi/33286723_1_monorail-project-delhi-metro-monorail-network)

The monorail project looks set to move into high gear with the Delhi Metro having started work on the revised detailed project report. The work on 10.8km-long Phase I of the monorail, which will run from Shastri Park to Trilokpuri, will start by next year, a DMRC official saids.

"We have received the original DPR that was undertaken by RITES and have started work on the revised DPR. It will be ready in three months," said a senior Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DRC) official.

The expected ridership of this line in 2017 is 1.37 lakh as per Delhi Metro.

DMRC, which will also give the cost estimate for the project with the DPR, is planning to integrate the monorail alignment with the stations on the Delhi Metro network. "The monorail will intersect with the Delhi Metro at three points - the existing stations in Shastri Park and Nirman Vihar and a Phase III station at Trilokpuri," said the official.

Unlike the original single-way scheme, Delhi Metro is planning to make it a two-way system. "It will not be like the Las Vegas model but rather a two-way system. We are looking into the specifics of the system and the area it will go through first," said the source.

With the monorail going through some very congested colonies, Delhi Metro admits that it will be a "very difficult" line.

"The areas along the alignment are highly populated. We shall have to look at the available land before deciding on factors like viaduct etc." said the official.

Sources said the Delhi Metro had earlier rejected taking the Metro network to these areas because it was so congested.

Last month, Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit had announced that the monorail will be extended beyond Trilokpuri to Vishwavidyalaya. Asking officials to ensure early implementation of the project, Dikshit had said that the non-polluting monorail network would ease traffic congestion in various areas in east Delhi.

The existing route from Shastri Park Metro station will pass through Yamuna Pushta Road, Raja Ram Kohli Marg, New Patparganj Road, Sanjay Nagar Lake to terminate parallel and connect Trilokpuri Metro station.

The proposed stations on the approved route are Shastri Park, Kailash Nagar, Gandhi Nagar, Taj Enclave, Geeta Colony, Guru Angad Nagar, Scope Tower, Ganesh Nagar, Mother Dairy, Patpar Ganj, Kotla and Trilokpuri.

New Delhi, Aug 28 (PTI) The Union Urban Development Ministry has asked Delhi government to construct around 14 separate networks of monorail across the city to improve the transport infrastructure, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said today. Dikshit said Union Urban Development Minister Kamal Nath during a meeting yesterday told her to set up monorail networks to connect metro stations and city government has decided to work on it. "We have been advised to complete 13-14 monorail networks. We will start work on them. In eight to ten years we plan to build a number of monorail network," Dikshit said addressing a press conference. Nath had yesterday given approval to the first monorail project of Delhi government which will link Shastri Park with Laxmi Nagar via Trilokpuri. Delhi Government has already asked Delhi Metro to prepare a detailed project report within three months for the 11-km-long network. The entire stretch will have a total of 12 stations. "When we asked for the approval of the 11 km long network, the UD Minister asked me why cannot we construct 13-14 such networks," said Dikshit. The DMRC will look after construction and commissioning of the first network. Dikshit said government may ask DMRC to implement all the monorail projects or set up an independent body on the lines of DMRC. She said expertise has been sought from Japan, Malaysia, Germany for implementing the project.

DMRC has sent the detailed project report to Delhi govt. and it has recommended to extend the corridor from Trilokpuri by a further 4 km to Mayur Vihar Phase III. DMRC stated that Trilokpuri will get connected by Line 7 of Phase-III but Mayur Vihar Phase III will remain unconnected, that's why extension monorail line to Mayur Vihar Phase-III has been proposed.

If this recommendations is accepted by Delhi govt. then the corridor will become 15 km from 11 km and will have 15 stations instead of 12. Cost will increase from 2200 crores to 2800 crores.

NEW DELHI: Delhi would boast of north India's first monorail network by 2017 with the city Government today fast tracking work on a 11-km corridor in east Delhi that would be integrated with three different lines of the existing Metro network.

The first monorail corridor from Shastri Park Metro Station to Trilokpuri will have 12 stations and the Detailed Project Report has been reviewed and approved by the Delhi Metro which would implement the project.

Work on the project would start in the next couple of months and the corridor would be commissioned in 2017 at a cost of Rs 2,235 crore.

Delhi Government took to the route of monorail, which is not a successful mode of transport like the Metro, to take public transport to door steps of people in congested colonies where mass raipd transport like Metro cannot be constructed.

Taking a round of the route-alignment of the corridor, Transport Minister Ramakant Goswami Goswami said the corridor would cater to around 1.5 lakh passengers a day initially.

East Delhi MP Sandeep Dikshit said the corridor will have three inter-change points at Shastri Park, Nirman Vihar and Trilokpuri thereby providing connectivity with the existing Dilshad Garden-Rithala line, Anand Vihar-Dwarka and the proposed Mukundpur-Yamuna Vihar under Phase-III of Metro.

Goswami also asked DMRC chief Mangu Singh, who was present, to make the corridor more purposeful and useful.

"It is more easy and cheap to lay Monorail lines than Metro lines. The Monorail can take sharp curves. It can also run in densely populated localities as it takes lesser area to operate," Dikshit said.

The 12 stations on the line are Shastri Park, Kailash Nagar, Gandhi Nagar, Taj Enclave, Geeta Colony, Guru Angad Nagar, Scope Tower, Ganesh Nagar, Mother Dairy, Patparganj, Kotla and Trilokpuri.

The corridor would start from Shastri Park Metro Station and culminate at Trilokpuri via Yamuna Pusta Road, Raja Ram Kohli Marg, Geeta Colony, Patparganj Road, Vikas Marg, Ganesh Nagar, New Patparganj Road, NH-24, Sanjay Lake and proposed Trilokpuri Metro Station.

Dikshit expressed hope that the Monorail corridor would bring a sea-change in public transport scenario in the East Delhi.

“Work on Delhi’s first Monorail project likely to start soon”

To be started in East Delhi at a cost of Rs. 2,235 crore: Minister
With the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation submitting the Detailed Project Report on the first phase of the Delhi Monorail project, work on this first such project in North India could start in East Delhi within the next three to four months, Delhi Transport Minister Ramakant Goswami said on Wednesday following an inspection of the corridor on which the project is to come up. The project, he said, is expected to be completed by 2017 at a cost of Rs. 2,235 crore.Mr. Goswami, who visited areas of East Delhi along with area MP Sandeep Dikshit and Delhi Metro Managing Director Mangu Singh, said the first Monorail corridor would usher in an era of public transport which would take it to the doorstep of people in congested colonies, whereit was impossible to lay Metro rail lines. The Minister said now that DMRC has submitted the DPR, a presentation would be made and put before the Delhi Cabinet. Thereafter, it would be sent to the Centre for its approval. The corridor would cater to around 1.5 lakh passengers daily and the fares would match those of Delhi Metro.Recalling how Union Urban Development Minister Kamal Nath had some time back spoken of the need to expand the Monorail network in Delhi, Mr Goswami said that to begin with the East Delhi corridor would be taken up. “We will then proceed with the studies of the other proposed lines,” he said.
Mr. Dikshit said that the 11-kilometre corridor from Shastri Park metro station to Trilokpuri will have 12 stations with three inter-change points at Shastri Park, Nirman Vihar and Trilokpuri to integrate it with three different Metro lines – the Dilshad Garden-Rithala line, Anand Vihar-Dwarka line and Mukundpur-Yamuna Vihar line.
He said RITES had carried out a Techno Economic Feasibility Study and DPR for this corridor whereas the Delhi Metro has further reviewed the DPR and submitted its report to the Government for implementation. The East Delhi MP said the need for Monorail was urgent as the area colonies have become very congested due to coming up of high-rise buildings.
While bus and metro connectivity was there, the Monorail would provide further reach and depth to the mass transport network.
It is also easier and cheaper to lay Monorail lines than Metro lines. The Monorail can also take sharp curves which the Metro cannot and can thus run in densely populated localities as it takes lesser area to operate, he said.

Delhi’s first monorail project put on track (http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/delhi/Delhis-first-monorail-project-put-on-track/articleshow/18055101.cms)

The choc-a-bloc bylanes of east Delhi will soon have a new entrant — a monorail that will connect not only the most congested areas but also link with metro stations, liberating commuters from heavy traffic.

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has submitted a detailed project report of the 11km alignment from Shastri Park to Trilokpuri to the Delhi government. On Wednesday, transport minister Ramakant Goswami said government sanction for the project was expected to come through soon. "We are hoping that the project will get sanction within the next three months, so that work on the monorail can start," said Goswami. Officials said the project report had set 2017 as the deadline for completion if work starts this year.

http://img12.imageshack.us/img12/25/18055110.jpg

The route, which goes through the densely populated Geeta Colony, Gandhi Nagar, Kailash Colony, Jheel Khurenja, Khureji Khas, Pandav Nagar and other neighbouring localities, will be the first monorail project in the country.

"Because of the nature of the area, construction of the alignment will need to be done innovatively. We are looking at new technology for this corridor," DMRC chief Mangu Singh said'

The entire alignment for the monorail will be elevated, along roads that are mostly narrow. The minimum right of way - 12-14m at Raja Ram Kohli Marg - however, is enough for the monorail to come up, said officials. The elevated corridor will take a minimum height of 5.5m clearance from the road. The advantage of the monorail in such populated areas, added the Delhi Metro official, is the narrower pillar diameter compared to the metro. The monorail pillar measures only 1-1.2m while the diameter for a metro pillar is 1.5-1.8m. The monorail's ability to take sharp turns is another factor in its favour.

The 11km corridor will have 12 stations: Shastri Park, Kailash Nagar, Gandhi Nagar, Taj Enclave, Geeta Colony, Guru Angad Nagar, Scope Tower, Ganesh Nagar, Mother Dairy, Patparganj, Kotla and Trilokpuri. It will culminate at Trilokpuri via Yamuna Pusta Road, Raja Ram Kohli Marg, Geeta Colony, Patparganj Road, Vikas Marg, Ganesh Nagar, New Patparganj Road, NH-24, Sanjay Lake and the proposed Trilokpuri metro station. The monorail will also connect with three Delhi Metro lines - at Shastri Park, Nirman Vihar and Trilokpuri - thereby providing connectivity with the existing Dilshad Gard8en-Rithala line, Anand Vihar-Dwarka and the proposed Mukundpur-Yamuna Vihar under phase III of the metro network. The monorail alignment will ferry 1.5 lakh passengers a day initially.

The project is expected to cost the government Rs 2,235 crore. Goswami added that the funding pattern would be the same as Delhi metro - jointly funded by the city government and the Centre. The fare structure for the monorail has been kept at Rs 2.5 per km at present, same as Delhi metro.

The project has been promoted aggressively by East Delhi MP Sandeep Dikshit, who was present on Wednesday when the transport minister, along with the Delhi metro MD, took a survey of the monorail alignment.

This is more of an experimental corridor. If successful, it would be replicated in other parts of the city.

Yeah man, I thought the same too...It would be worthwhile to connect Loni though, than this short monorail route for a few kilometres.

On that note, whatever happened to the Ashok Park - Delhi Gate line? I see no mention of it even in Phase IV. Scrapped? If they went ahead with the Green line extension, they could extend it from Delhi Gate and have it meet the realigned Yamuna Bank - Loni line, or the Monorail line somewhere near Geeta Colony. It would require a bridge over the Yamuna though.

How can they start work if they haven't awarded a contract to a supplier? Will it be Bombardier, Hitachi or Scomi?

This route will kill the proposed Yamuna Bank - Loni metro line in Phase-IV :ohno:
Yeah man, I thought the same too...It would be worthwhile to connect Loni though, than this short monorail route for a few kilometres.

I hope you guys know that the Loni border will be connected via line 7 in phase 3 itself? The border in that corner of Delhi snakes around and isn't easily distinguishable on the street, so line 7's Johri Enclave station will actually be built in Loni and the line north of that to Shiv Vihar will run in Delhi but be parallel to the border with Loni.

Grab a map and you'll see that if both the proposed "Yamuna Bank - Loni border line" and Line 7 were to exist together, the Line 7 route will have a better catchment as it goes through the heart of that region while the "Yamuna Bank - Loni border line" would have gone through the fringe areas with absolutely zero population density on its western side for half the route upto Khajuri Khas. Even after Khajuri Khas, the pop. density on the west side is way lesser than what you'd find on either side of Line 7.

As for the monorail, it has a better catchment from Shastri Park to Nirman Vihar compared to the parallel route of the metro from Shastri Park to Yamuna Bank. A metro line would have been nice but as we know, space constraints prohibit it.

Delhi government promises monorail in election year

New Delhi: The process for construction of the first-ever monorail project in the Capital will start soon. The corridor will connect Shastri Park and Trilokpuri in east Delhi. This project will definitely have its impact on assembly elections due by the end of this year.

It is believed that the project will benefit the ruling party in the coming elections. Delhi Metro department has already submitted Detailed Project Report (DPR) to the government to start construction works for the first monorail project from September- October in the national capital after getting the official nod.

Political analysts say that the ruling party, Congress, will get political benefit in East Delhi region if the construction work starts in the mid of this year.

As per Delhi Metro reports, monorail will become functional from March, 2017 by when three elections- assembly polls, Lok Sabha polls and municipal elections- are likely to be held. Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Monday directed Transport Department to present the proposed plan before the cabinet for the official permission.

A detailed survey of Delhi will be conducted by engineering consultants RITES Ltd. to check the feasibility for setting up Monorail facilities, said Delhi Transport Minister Ramakant Goswami on Monday while responding to the demands made by several MLAs in the Delhi Assembly for extending this light rail transit system to their constituency.

The discussion began with a question put forth under ‘Starred Questions’ by BJP MLA from Sangam Vihar Dr. S.C.L. Gupta who wanted to know the parameters prescribed by the Government to operate Monorail facilities in different areas in the city. He also asked if Monorail will be introduced in Sangam Vihar to promote tourism in the area. “A Monorail facility should be brought about to link Sangam Vihar to Mehrauli since 20 lakh people use the Mehrauli-Gurgaon Road daily,” he said.

Dr. Gupta’s request then prompted several other MLAs to make similar requests for Monorail in their constituencies. Among them was Mundka MLA Manoj Kumar who asked if a Monorail facility would connect Dwarka Mor to Baprola; and Karawal Nagar MLA Mohan Singh Bisht who said: “Karawal Nagar is one of the most congested areas. Are there any plans to introduce the Monorail there?”

The parameters that were tabled by Mr. Goswami for the Government to operate a Monorail facility include places where neither Metro rail nor bus rapid transit (BRT) services can be provided; in congested roads where the right of way is not enough for either Metro or BRT to be constructed; and where a Monorail system can provide a high-level interchange link with the Metro rail, Railway and BRT networks.

Further, in those corridors where there are sharp turns and thus construction of Metro rail is not feasible since it requires a 300 metre radius as opposed to the Monorail which only requires a 70 metre turning radius, the Minister said the Monorail would be considered. In its written reply, the Government also noted that Monorail is also easier to construct and construction of its corridors is more friendly towards the surrounding population as it allows greater ventilation and natural lighting. Besides, the Monorail rolling stock also does not emit much sound.
