between France & Spain

I love the road between Oloron-Sainte-Marie - Arette - La Pierre Saint-Martin ski resort - Isaba/Izaba - Roncal :)

Polish DK8 between Kudowa-Zdrój & Kłodzko is also very, very nice :)

English M20 when approaching Dover is also nice.

More later :D

In Italy I would for sure choose SS45bis "Gardesana occidentale", running along the western shore of Garda lake, often inside tunnels dug few meters from the waters:
http://img36.imageshack.us/img36/7858/limone.jpg

And you cannot leave out SS145 "Sorrentina", running along the Sorrento paeninsula and Amalfi coast:

The road runs along Barcis lake and Cellina river.

SR479 Near Scanno (L'Aquila) - Abruzzo, inside the gorge formed by Sagittario river:
http://img41.imageshack.us/img41/8063/unofa.jpg

Same road, near Villalago, inside the Sagittario gorge. This is Sagittario lake:
http://img10.imageshack.us/img10/7149/duec.jpg

Same road, near Anversa degli Abruzzi (visible at the right):
http://img825.imageshack.us/img825/2323/anversa.jpg

Trivia about Anversa degli Abruzzi. "Anversa" is the Italian name of the Belgian city Antwerp, so "degli Abruzzi" (of Abruzzo) was added to avoid misunderstandings.

But you have the roads running on the dams and near other hydraulic structures :)

Well yes but they're all boring duel-carriageways with a view on... water. It's not terribly exciting and it doesn't compare well to, for instance, the coastal road from Amalfi to Sorrento (I used to live in Salerno so I'm very familiar with that extraordinarily pretty part of Italy).

Bergen to Oslo on E16.(you can view any bit of it,at "street view"level on the google map). You see mountains, fjords, bridges etc

The road, south of St Moritz, changes name,as you go through a range of villages.Stunning views of lakes mountains.

p.s.another eye raiser is the road from Svetl Vlas, down to Sunny Beach(Bulgaria). You can see this, under "Black sea resorts",in the Bulgaria forum(dont know the name of the road). It has a mountain on one side, black sea on the other and a dual carriageway with palm trees in the middle.

E-79 nationalroad Dlona Dykania - Sandanski, lots of mountains and steep rocks.
You see the Rila mountain, the Pirin mountain and the western mountains from that road, the rila mountain in Dupnica looks similar to Jesenice in Slovenia, it always reminded me to that.

Struma motorway
There are great hills there aswell and an incredible view to the Vitosha mountain.

Ljulin motorwaay

E- 80 nationalroad: Great mountainvalley close to the border.

-----------------------------------------------------------

Slovenia:
A2 - Ljubliana - Jesenice
One of my favourites, the peaks that can be seen there just wake up deep feelings in humans, the beautiful storzic is a true highlight.

-----------------------------------------------------------

Serbia:
Nis - Dimitrovgrad:
Great landscape there, lots of rocks and steep walls in that gorge with 13 tunnels, after that part the hills turn more gentle but are still very picturesqueue and the landscape looks very countrylike and wild, much different to some treeless parts in europe.

A "twin road" at Spain.

It is located at Picos de Europa, region of Castilla y León (very near the village of Cain, the only way to go there).

Until four years ago that road was almost 40% narrow than now!!!!!. Take a look about how they got more space with an artificial bridge

I think Vätterleden in Sweden is more beautiful than Blå vägen.

Vätterleden is the part of the motorway at the east side of the lake Vättern. Its a part of the E4 from Stockholm to Helsingborg.

Its a beautiful motorway. :)

I could contribute the A 92 in Spain because of the mountains, the motorway-bypass of genova (A 10) becauce it runs more or less right through the city, you can watch people eating in their living-rooms from the motorway. The French A 8 between the border and Frejus (mountains)

Ex-SP3 through the Furlo Gorge, near Acqualagna, Marche, Italy
http://img651.imageshack.us/img651/4843/furlo1.jpg

"Furlo" is a corruption of Latin word "forulum", meaning "little hole". The little hole is this one, the most ancient still used road tunnel in the world, dug by Romans in 77 a.D.:

Nice topic! Something to remember for the next trips..

But you have the roads running on the dams and near other hydraulic structures :)

Indeed! And sometimes even uglyness can be picturesque as well, like in our harbours, e.g. here (http://maps.google.com/maps?q=N57,+brielle,+nl&hl=nl&ll=51.966772,4.130173&spn=0.011978,0.040212&sll=57.428134,-5.819149&sspn=0.041864,0.160847&vpsrc=6&hnear=N57,+Brielle,+Zuid-Holland,+Nederland&t=m&z=15&layer=c&cbll=51.966701,4.130146&panoid=NAN02_KhC_Zs-AN0qOo3gA&cbp=12,129.32,,0,-4.51).

That's about the most hilly as you can get here. Actually, there's one 'climb' on a motorway, the A2 towards Maastricht. Southbound you'll get a relatively nice view, while northbound there's even a short 3-lane 'climbing' section. :D

Another Norwegian road that may be of interest.

Norwegian County Road 63 (r63) between Langvannet and Åndalsnes.

What you are seing: Fjords, mountains, a few villages, some modern architecture, and step, winding roads.

The road going down here is r63:

No high mountains, nor flat road... just "middle mountains".

http://i394.photobucket.com/albums/pp29/alserrod/Carreteras/adivinacarretera11.jpg

It is located at southern Aragon, at Spain.

We have a thread about "guess the road" and I posted this one considering it will be very easy (and it was).

The full road is so bad as in the image but the picture is very nice at all. Nice very little villages and pure nature.

This area is known as "Montoro Organs". Montoro is the name of the town close to it.
Organs because the form of the mountains and because it is said that with a heavy wind it sounds like an organ

I can find some roads inside national parks (last one I posted was national park since near a century, it was the first one created in Spain, very small but included that corner)... but this is just an area where live nobody. It could be the area in southern Europe with less density of population.

This is one of the most dangerous but beautiful roads I've ever driven on. It's a local road going from western shore of Lake Garda to the town of Tremosine. It's never larger than 1 lane (in total!) but it's a 2 way road. There are some rest places on the side allowing people to let other cars in the other direction drive by. In google maps it's called "Via Benaco". Some pics:

These are some of the most scenic roads I know which are close to my hometown. I like dramatic views of mountains as you will see :D

The LR-250 in the Leza River Canyon (Cañón del río Leza):

The SO-830 climbing down the Santa Inés mounain pass offers great views of the infinite pine woods of Soria:
http://i962.photobucket.com/albums/ae110/ciceron01/carr06.jpg

Funnily enough the northern side (LR-333) is much more arid:
http://i962.photobucket.com/albums/ae110/ciceron01/carr07.jpg

The northern part of Burgos province has some of the best landscapes I've seen. Here's a picture of the BU-550 where you can see part of the valley of Mena, where the Kingdom of Castile was born.
http://i962.photobucket.com/albums/ae110/ciceron01/carr01.jpg

For those who like History: This is the exact place where Castile was born: http://g.co/maps/546fu

Green hills and trees, which differ a lot from the stereotypical idea of Castile (arid plains filled with fields of wheat).

I know what you mean, when I'm in the Alps I feel similar. But most Swiss actually live at least a few Kilometers from the Alps, so you actually have a nice background.

Many roads in my region look like this:

I´am not sure cause i was 2009 last time there and the second part was still open but some dudes who were there this or last year say the complete road thru the canyon is now barried.there is another very interesting road near to this road that also goes thru a canyon.when you drive down the nigerpass(passo nigra) and not taking the main road but hitting left near the village of Tiers you find a road with a 24% climb that goes thru a canyon, very small and not very well known so mostly you are alone - here some kind of a map

@Spinoza: the road near Bolzano that Zagor posted pics is still open and there is no problem going there by car. I was here in 2010. I posted a street view pic in the first page of this thread.

My pics of the TF 21, one of the most pictoresque streets I have seen. It's located on Tenerife in the Canary Islands and runs through the Teide National Park, the highest vulcan in Europe.

I like for the diversity of landscape in few chilometers. Outside Puerto de la Cruz where it starts/ends, the vegetation along the road is bare....

...but going up few turns starts to change...

...becoming almost an alpine forest with conifers...

...and ending on a plateau at the feet of the Teide before to going down again towards the coast near Arona. Here the landscape leaves you breathless

Slovenia, Rebernice H4

Cannot belive that an expressway is so step, it reminds me the A6 Turin - Savona (that I never saw in real life but I would like to drive there one day; I clinched the H4 as passenger but I don't remember it was so impressive).
In comparison the old Bologna - Firenze or the A23 are nothing.

^^ It looks much steeper than it really is on that pic. I think it's about 5%.
