First mosque in M'sia to be built at sea
By ANTHONY CHEW
MALAYSIA’S first mosque at sea at Penang’s popular Tanjung Bungah is scheduled for completion by the end of December.
Construction work is now 80 per cent completed.
The design for the RM15m project is a blend of local and Middle Eastern architecture.

Penang Public Works Department (JKR) director Datuk Ashaari Mohamad said the mosque was the first to be built on sea in the country and along the Straits of Malacca.
The mosque is expected to open before Hari Raya Haji in February.
“The two-storey building will also be major tourist attraction,” he said, adding the mosque could accommodate 1,500 people.
Ashaari said steps had been taken to ensure that the building was safe.
“For instance, we used concrete piling,’’ he said.
He said the department was satisfied with the quality of work carried out by a local Penang contractor and the materials used.
“We hope to open the mosque before Hari Raya Haji in February,” he said, adding the mosque would be accessible via a gangway from the beach.
State Development Officer Datuk Ismail Haji Wadin said the floating mosque would be Penang’s newest landmark.
“It is to replace the old mosque nearby,'' he said.
The 1,295sq m building has separate prayer halls for men and women. Nearby is a car park that can accommodate about 250 cars.
The mosque boasts a seven-storey minaret and an open space for the people to enjoy the view of the sea before and after sunset.
Funding for the project comes from federal and state governments.
Tanjung Bungah Village Safety and Security Committee (JKKKK) chairman Haji Abdul Jalil Ariffin said the mosque would attract local and foreign tourists.
“It is the first of its kind in Malaysia. The mosques in Kuala Ibai, Kuala Terengganu, and in Putrajaya are built on lakes,” he said, adding the people could view the mosque from Jalan Tanjung Bungah, opposite the former Tanjung Bungah bus station.
Tanjung Bungah Masjid Jamek committee deputy chairman Mustafa Daud said the mosque would be open to Muslims and non-Muslims.
“Tourists will be delighted to see the unique structures, especially when the lights are switched on at night,” he said.

szehoong November 4th, 2004, 10:07 AM Although I am impressed but I think this is just another built-at-the-sea or looks-like-floating structure cause if it is really is floating meaning that it is like a boat...really floats on water mah ....can tow here and there. :D
I would love to see that one day they really built a floating mosque but then again.....what if the waves makes it senget a bit then the Kiblat direction also gone wrong :? Perhaps they could anchor it properly like an oil-rig? ;)

well.....some people would do anything for aesthetic ;)
ANyway they built it on water to achieve the 'floating' effect since this is a 'floating structure'.
They call is 'floating' cause it has the looks.......technically it isn't floating as it would be very challenging and the cost would be enourmous but to achieve the floating effect....well.....that's the result :D
