Goethals Bridge To Be Replaced Or Restored

The Port Authority is considering several plans to either replace or restore the Goethals Bridge.

One option, which was first hatched in the 1980s, is adding a twin bridge next to the Goethals.

Another plan being considered is building a new bridge south of the original.

Last year the Port Authority announced the bridge would undergo a $63 million renovation.

The 76-year-old bridge links Staten Island to New Jersey, handling about 85,000 vehicles a day.

I sort of like the bridge, but I wouldnt mind seeing a very sleek new one in its place. As long as I get a piece of the steel.

A high-level renovation is most definitely in order. I've driven on the bridge more than once, and it sucks. The lanes are impassably narrow, and the gravel is falling apart from lack of maintenance. It's so bad that there isn't even a fence separating the pedestrian lane from the main road. And don't get me started on the traffic heading in and out of Jersey. :puke:

It's about time they fixed up that bridge. While I'm sure the bridge may have been very nice at one time, it has seen better days and must be repaired or replaced. The lanes are way to narrow and is too small for the number of vehicles it handles on a daily basis.
