Finishing touches for this weekend’s New York City Marathon were put in place in Manhattan Wednesday.
Marathon organizers and city officials put their art skills to work this morning, as the group painted the final blue and orange lines leading to the finish line in Central Park.
The 35th annual marathon takes place this Sunday, with approximately 35,000 runners expected to participate, among them, Olympic bronze medalist Deena Kastor.
City tourism officials say the 26.2 mile run has aided in post-9/11 rebuilding efforts, and has a big draw from runners overseas.
“More international runners, more international visitors, will be coming to New York City for this year’s ING New York City Marathon than ever before,” said NYC & Company President Cristyne Nicholas.
City officials say the blue and orange colors at the finish line behind Tavern on the Green in Central Park have significance.
“Three-hundred seventy years ago, a guy named Hendrick Hudson, a Brit working on behalf of the Dutch West India Company, sailed into something that would later bare his name,” said Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe. “The colony of New Amsterdam was established, and its colors were blue and orange; that’s why you look at the city flag and it’s blue and orange.”
The marathon kicks off this Sunday at 9:05 a.m. on the Staten Island side of the Verrazano Bridge, and takes runners through all five boroughs.
