You gotta give credit to NLB for not choosing a boring design. ;)

in case u guys havent realised, the new library is actually located in a location where it becomes part of the skyline, it is actually tall enough!

I discovered this when i was walking around the marina bay/merlion/fullerton area. i saw this massive contruction site (and its gigantic structures) alongside the Raffles City/Parkview/Gateway/Bugis Junction/Suntec City/Shaw Tower part of the skyline.

so its not just a building hidden amongst all the skyscrappers, it has become one of them.

that central library is definitely anl eyesore ... Is it? Dont be too harsh on it. Maybe its comparable to our existing National Library Building, which was due for demolition. The authorities think its not of any architectural merit to worth keeping it. But it actually started a huge howl of protest from the public! Sometimes the people just want to attach sentiments to anything, no matter if it looks good or not. ;)

Well the thing is that they upgraded the interior just about 2 years ago I think. It dosent feel that different inside anymore from other libraries. And of coz, it makes me wonder why the freak they spend that money when they are going to demolish it soon anyway?? :bleep: :D

But do be aware, that we cant "force" people to appreciate a building's value by imposing it on them....different people respond to different things differently, and ultimately, it just depends on how they choose to act on those feelings. (there could be alot more people being sentimental about drab HDB blocks, but if they keep silent, no one's gonna noe about it)

Must be the high floor-floor heights. Might also be due to having each floor connected by ramps, one of the features of Ken Yeang's designs.

SINGAPORE: By April, book lovers will have to bid a fond farewell to a Singapore institution. That's when the National Library at Stamford Road will move out of its 44-year-old home. But the new $200 million building at Victoria Street won't be ready until late 2005.

From 1st April, the National Library at Stamford Road will shut its doors to the public for good.

And everything in it, will go.

About 200,000 reference books will be moved to the Jurong Regional Library.

The rest will go to a warehouse in Changi or other community and regional libraries.

Before the end of this year, the library will be demolished.

But that's not the end.

You can own a piece of Singapore history when the trademark red bricks go on sale later this year.

So does the move also mean a disruption of library services?

Said Deputy Chief Executive, National Library Board, Ngian Lek Choh: "In terms of borrowing and returning, they can do it at any of our libraries so on April 1st, they can go to any library to return and borrow books from 22 libraries on the island."

The big move was originally supposed to happen 3 years ago.

"They've already had plans to redevelop the site here to accomodate the SMU and the Fort Canning Tunnel. Obviously being major projects, they had strict timelines to adhere to.

"As a result, we had numerous meetings with the authorities to explain the situation and I'm glad they've been most supportive and agreed on the extension of the timeline to June 2004," said Senior Director of Management Services, NLB, Lim Theam Siew.

The library's opening hours have also been extended for the month of March.

And for the first 2 weeks in February, there'll be guided-tours.

This is the Heritage Room and it's usually closed to the public, but on the guided tour, you'll get a glimpse of some of Singapore's rare publications.

The oldest collection that's kept here is actually more than 400 years old.

The tour is free and it'll be your last chance to be re-acquainted with the National Library. - CNA

SINGAPORE : Time is running out for the old National Library building on Stamford Road but library lovers can still get one last peek at the historic building on a guided tour this weekend and the next.

Guided tours were conducted from February 6th to 8th and more will be organised from February 13th to 15th.

Mr Tang Chung Zu, 89, has been a member of this library since it opened in 1960 and he is wistful about its impending demolition.

He told our reporter: "I feel sad it's a beautiful building, it's historical, and now it's going to be demolished I feel very sad."

Others too were sentimental about the old building.

"It's a pity because there's so much history here," said one visitor.

"Very sad like I think many others too, because all our memories are here although you may transplant the whole library there but you can't bring all the memories there," said another.

Pungut Sapii, Library Staff, Central Community Library, said: "I feel very very sad because in a way it's a nostalgic building to me, and I grew with the National Library, when I first joined in 1971. It's a unique by itself, you cannot get the shape of this kind of building anymore in Singapore. So I think it's a pity if this building is demolished but we can't help it."

"Although it look a bit like a factory, I'm sure there is a lot a new things there like computers, Internet and all that will make the young generation feel in, compared with this old building."

But for many, their sentiment did not extend to the building's bricks which will be offered up for sale after the building is demolished.

"It's not something that can give you some knowledge or give you some memory about the library, it's just a piece of brick you can find it anywhere, especially construction site," said one library lover.

"For me, I think buying a brick doesn't really make a difference," added another

"Bricks are so common everywhere, no I don't think I would buy it."

But many were happy with the guided tours which provided members of the public a chance to get a rare peek into rooms that are usually closed to them.

These included the Stacks - a collection of all the printed material in Singapore since 1955 as well as the microfilm room, where newspapers are carefully archived for future generations.

A spanking new 16-storey library is set to replace the red brick building.

But not everything will go: for instance, the St Andrew's Cross at the foyer will be moved to the new building. - CNA

Hiho. I know this is an old topic but heck.

I went on the library tour today! Awesome!

Too bad i didn't take any pictures though(save for those on my brother's phone, but i have no idea how to transfer them to the computer).

Now i'm really sad that they'll be tearing it down. It's just so grand and old, and it has so much history in it. Walking through its dark, winding corridors and riding it's grille-door elevators really make me want to cry.

I never knew so much went on behind the scenes. The old library is truly a treasure. It's older than Singapore, and it gives a senseof warmth, age, authority and grandeur that no truly modern building can offer.

Its really sad that it has to go. Of course, it's not like i'm against it or anything. Change, in this case, is a good thing. Still, i wish it could stay. It's really such a pity.

Sounds like the ideal thing could be to convert the old library for other use and build the new library somewhere else.. or build it as an extension of the old building. But maybe there isn't enough space nearby?

It's sad to hear the old style elevator will go as I suppose there are not many of that kind in SE Asia, right? :?

SINGAPORE: Due to the overwhelming public interest, the National Library at Stamford Road has extended its guided tours to 29 February.

The tours had initially been scheduled for two weekends, from 6-8 February and 13-15 February.

The tours will now be extended by another two weekends, from 20-22 February and 27-29 February.

So far, 644 visitors have attended the tours, the majority of whom gave the thumbs-up.

The tours allow visitors to learn about the history of the library and participants can also access areas restricted to the public previously.

The National Library Board (NLB) organises the tours as part of several initiatives before the Stamford Road building makes way for the Singapore Management University (SMU).

In addition to the guided tours, there is also a photography contest to involve members of the public who may wish to capture and preserve the memories of the library prior to its demolition.

Held from 3 February to 4 March, the focus of the photography contest, themed "Moments and Memories", is the architectural features of the National Library building.

The winner stands to walk away with a Kyocera camera and a cash prize.

The winning entries will be displayed at the National Library, Stamford Road on 31 March and at the new National Library at Victoria Street subsequently.

I'm posting this from school, where the computers are often stuffed with keyloggers, but i really want to reply. ;) so if a day from now a i start posting threads containing hundreds of notorious 'f' words, please understand that it's probably not me. Muahaha..

Yeah! They showed us 400 year old thing! It was really cool and old. There were also some letters from Raffles to his business partner in London. Read them, and they sounded like love letters... eek...

I suggest you do it fast. Time slots get booked up really really fast, and the library is also packing up its stuff so if you go to late you might not be able to see very much.

Sorry, pal, i didn't take any photos because it was a school day and i won't risk brining a $700 gadget to school. Especially not when i have PE that day and have to leave it in class during the one hour and ten minutes that my class is outside running around.

Hey! I do that too! Take and run, i mean. I usually partially conceal my camera in my bag and take the photo with only the lens poking out. To the not-so-observant passerby it looks like i'm just searching my bag for something. I sometimes use my brother's old schoolbag also. Lot's of holes i can stick the lens through. The thing is, though, that if i get caught it'll be even more suspicious. Like i'm a spy or terrorist or something. :colgate:

Going in groups definately helps, because then the attention is drawn on one person but the whole group.

The tour guide said something about it being the responsibility of the library to preserve the history of Singapore for future generations. Those newspapers have to go through a special fumigation process before being vacuum-packed under 2 layers of plastic and stored under pitch-black lighting conditions. They're only opened for major court cases etc.

Looks nice,

Though I prefer libraries to have the old look instead of modern. Worked part time in NLB for a few years, so I love the old feeling instead of the newly renovated libraries. Still remember the days where they use paper and chops and the monochrome Opac machines for the borrowing and returning of books, those were the days and how libraries look best, but queue will be long lor. haha.

Little ones give big thank-you on last library visit

THE LITTLE ones could not stand still nor could all of them remember the words to their songs. That did not matter at all, judging from the big smiles on the librarians' faces.

The 18 pre-schoolers aged between 18 months and six years, from Montessori at Little Children's House along Cairnhill Road, made a special trip to the National Library on Friday because they wanted to thank the librarians.

Every Friday for the past three years, the librarians have held storytelling sessions for the children of this school at the library premises. The children would come in for the sessions two hours before the library opened at 10am.

This was the children's last visit to the Stamford Road building as it shuts its doors tonight.

I'm not a library person, so I havent been visiting libraries for a couple of years until I wanted to borrow a book at the Toa Payoh Library. After selecting the book I had difficulty finding a libararian and I was stuck. I didnt even know I had to use the auto-machines with my ID and a 50+ auntie had to show me how the technology worked. I was assuming it was still the paper and chop style :bash:

FOUR months before the Nicoll Highway collapse, the main contractor involved in the project had been hit with a stop-work order at another worksite.

Nishimatsu-Lum Chang Joint Venture (NLCJV) was found to have safety problems in its construction of the new National Library at Victoria Street last December.

The National Library Board (NLB) told Today that the concerns of the stop-work order were "mainly related to the safety of the scaffolding erection and overhead protection of the periphery of the building under construction".

The problems were discovered following an inspection by the Ministry of Manpower (MOM). It issued the stop-work order on Dec 5 and it was lifted seven days later.

Said an NLB spokesperson: "The company informed us verbally of the order on the very day and followed up with an email and a letter to us."

She added that NLCJV had completed all the rectification works on Dec 8.

Its staff and workers were also sent for training programmes on construction safety to reinforce a safety awareness mindset.

Only 13 stop-work orders were issued last year, out of about 3,975 construction sites registered with the MOM.

The longest order was in effect for 316 days, as the company had to "re-modify the design of the construction platform of a building", said an MOM spokesperson. She declined to name the company or the project.

The Ministry issues stop-work orders when conditions at a workplace are grossly unsafe.

"If the work carried out poses imminent danger to the life and limb of workers, a stop-work order is issued," said the then Minister of State for Manpower, Dr Ng Eng Hen, at the launch of the Construction Safety Campaign in 2002.

Under the debarment scheme for contractors with a bad safety record, every full stop-work order incurs 10 demerit points. When a contractor has accumulated 30 demerit points within a 12-month period, he will be issued with a warning letter.

If the contractor incurs another 24 demerit points within the next 12 months, he will be deregistered from the Building and Construction Authority's Contractors Registry System, for which contractors must qualify before they can bid for public sector projects.

Although NLCJV declined to speak to Today, its client, the NLB, said all major excavation works for the project have been completed and that the rest of the construction activities on the new National Library site were proceeding as scheduled.

"NLB has always emphasised the importance of site safety to the contractor and continues to reinforce this at regular meetings, site visits and dialogues with the contractor," she said.

NLB embarks on book to remember Stamford Rd library
By Rita Zahara, Channel NewsAsia

http://www.channelnewsasia.com/imagegallery/store/phpK09ApV.jpg

SINGAPORE: The National Library Board is working on a book to remember the Stamford Road National Library.

It has been collecting contributions in the form of a story, photographs, visual illustrations for the book called "My Fond Memories".

One contributor is Michael Wee who is sharing his collection of pictures of the National Library.

Pictures of the library in 1962 - they have been part of Michael Wee's family for decades.

"It kind of reminded me of my earlier visit to my family business which was to make bricks and I was told that we turned clay to bricks and these bricks represented income for the family," said Mr Wee.

The library was also the source for him to satisfy his thirst for knowledge.

"You must remember that in those days we did not have enough money to buy books for ourselves. We frequented the library to get what we wanted. We also frequented the second-hand bookstores at Bras Basah Road."

Another contributor to the book project is Santi Yeo, a budding writer.

In the past, she and other women writers would meet at the library's courtyard every alternate Friday to share readings and writings.

"I shared with fellow women writers who wrote but whose works never got published. But it was fun knowing that even the loneliest writers have a face and a voice."

The National Library Board has extended the submission deadline for contributions to the book project till mid August.

Members of the public can submit their contributions online at http://www.nlb.gov.sg or at any NLB library. - CNA

Crane boom topples at construction site of new National Library
By Joanne Leow and Yvonne Cheong, Channel NewsAsia

http://www.channelnewsasia.com/imagegallery/store/phpiIo949.jpg

SINGAPORE : The boom arm of a crane fell from the 13th storey of the new National Library building that is being built at Bugis.

Fortunately no one was injured.

The construction company involved is Nishimatsu-Lum Chang, which was also the main contractor at the Nicoll Highway cave-in.

There are 4 tower cranes at the National Library construction site.

The boom arm of one crane collapsed as it was hoisting a container of debris.

Eyewitnesses said that around midday they heard a loud noise from the construction site and rushed out just in time to see something falling from one of the cranes.

"We heard a loud noise and a cable snapped from the crane up there and a bunch of stuff dropped into the work station," said one eyewitness.

Nishimatsu-Lum Chang says the new National Library Building was not damaged.

Dennis Khoo, Senior Project Manager, Nishimatsu-Lum Chang, said: "The load that is being lifted is within the capacity of the tower crane. Currently we're investigating the cause, and we think it's a one-off case of accident."

The construction company says it is not sure how the incident happened and is still investigating. - CNA
