Norrbotten är stort till ytan och innehåller rätt många, men små städer och samhällen. Har i perioder varit ekonomiskt starkt och vädrar just nu morgonluft då malmpriserna gått upp (vilket genererar vansinnigt mycket nya arbetstillfällen), samt att satsningar på bland annat vindkraftsparker och annat fallit väl ut.

Jag tänkte börja med att presentera ett antal projekt som är planerade/påbörjade i residensstaden Luleå. Allt eftersom presenterar jag projekt som är på gång i andra städer och vissa satsningar i glesbygd och fjällvärld.

Kvarteret Hunden

I centrala Luleå har bygget påbörjats av dessa huskroppar som kommer att innehålla affärsytor i de nedre planen, bostäder och hotell i övre och i högdelen. Längst upp kommer det finnas en skybar med utsikt över Luleå och Stadsfjärden. Projektet innefattar alla huskropparna i mitten av bilden, de som ligger intill högdelen. Byggnaderna till höger och vänster i bild står där redan.

Facebook bygger några gigantiska serverhallar i utkanterna av Luleå. Genererar "endast" femtio heltidstjänster inom IT-området, men tack vare enorma energikostnader så är det en väldigt god affär för Luleå Kommun. Luleå marknadsför sig för fullt ute i USA och Europa i jakt på att få fler företag att följa Facebooks exempel.

Har inte hört något om detta projektet på ett tag. Ursprungsplanen var att det skulle stå klart 2013, känns väl tufft att hålla den tidsplanen. När det presenterades 2009 var det ett väldigt seriöst förslag, men då jag sällan är i Luleå har jag inte haft så stor koll på utveckling av projektet.

Åtta högre bostadshus, mellan 14-16 våningar höga. De ligger naturligt på en liten höjd, så redan på första våningen befinner man sig 35 meter över havet.

HSB har länge viljat bygga de två husen i mitten i ett av Luleås bättre lägen. Tio våningar höga, lägenheter med storlekar på mellan 2-5 rok. Har försenats gång på gång, trolig byggstart är satt till 2014.

Posthuset

Det klassiska posthuset i centrala Luleå har stått tomt några år och debatten om vad det ska användas till har gått varm. Saluhall har varit ett ganska hett förslag, men nu är det klart att det blir ett gym. Hoppas att de speciella lokalerna utnyttjas och görs något vettigt av. Kan bli en gym / spa-anläggning av väldigt hög klass.

Kvarteret Katten

Ett högre hus ska byggas i Kvarteret Katten i centrala Luleå. Ursprungsidén låg på 40 våningar, efter samråd hit och dit skrevs det ner till max 15 våningar. Kommer troligen att byggas, men pappersarbete och dylikt lär ta några år. Finns inga förlsag på gestaltning än.

Harads

I den lilla byn Harads invigdes för några år sedan Harads Tree Hotel som har fått en del uppmärksamhet. Hotellrummen ligger mitt ute i skogen utanför Harads (cirka tio mil från Luleå), håller väldigt hög standard och boendet i sig verkar vara en rätt häftig upplevelse.

Haparanda

Sedan IKEA-etableringen har Haparanda växt, framför allt ekonomiskt. En småstad som var på väg att somna in har nu börjat satsa. Bland annat på en evenemangsarena och exklusiva bostäder i ett gammalt vattentorn.

Piteå

Det allmännyttiga Pitebo planerar ett 17-våningshus i de centrala delarna av Piteå. Skulle i sådana fall bli den högsta icke-industriella byggnaden i Piteå. Ingenting är spikat och det är mycket troligt att det skrivs ner en 5-6 våningar innan allt är klubbat och klart.

I Piteå planeras också en av världen största vindkraftsparker. När parken är färdigbyggd år 2020 kommer den att innehålla 1100 vindkraftverk.

Naturum Laponia, Gällivare

En byggnad i Stora Sjöfallet med utställningar, ateljéer och café. Kommer fungera som ett slags turistcentrum, då gångstråk till utsiktsplatser, eldstäder och annat kommer att förbättras och utgå från byggnaden.

Det har tagit en del tid och varit en del kritik mot projektet, men bygget drar igång i Maj.

Köpcentrum, Boden

Boden har tack vare och på grund av närheten till Luleå aldrig haft mycket till egen shopping, men de lokala politikerna verkar vilja ändra på det. För ett eller två år sedan öppnades en ny galleria i centrala stan och under 2013 kommer ytterligare ett nytt köpcentrum stå färdigt.

Luleå Kommun have somewhere around 75,000 inhabitants (and as you say, is very cozy), Piteå somewhere around 45,000, Boden around 28,000 and Älvsbyn around 8,000. Luleå is growing, Piteå is slowly growing, Boden and Älvsbyn have been declining slowly for some time, but seem to have stopped in the last 2-3 years.

Luleå is much smaller than Umeå, but a lot, and I mean a lot of people from Boden, Piteå, Älvsbyn and smaller villages nearby work in Luleå and live somewhere cheaper, so the amount of people that actually is in Luleå on an almost daily basis are a much higher number.

I visit Luleå a couple of times every year, and the attitude towards the city have changed to being more positive, at least that's what I think. One project that was heavily questioned and critized was Kulturens Hus, but five years after its opening it proved to be a success for the whole city, not only for the art/culture people. I think this has made way for new interesting projects, like the Facebook thing. The plan for the whole server hall project is that Facebook is only the beginning, that more big companies will have their servers in Norrbotten. The Fyrkanten area (Luleå, Boden, Piteå, Älvsbyn) kind of work together on this project. For an example, one of the things that actually landed the deal in favor for Luleå was the wind power plants in Piteå.

Luleå and Boden are pretty close, but it's pretty rare that people from Luleå actually visits Boden. The exception for people even going in that direction are the people who work at Sunderbyns Sjukhus, a hospital almsot in the middle between the two cities. Opened ten years ago or so.

Well, maybe it's not quite as cinematic as you remember it, but it sure looks good when entering Luleå from the south :)

Haparanda and Luleå have no connection to each other (that I know of), besides that they are relatively close to each other and that a lot of people from Luleå go to IKEA in Haparanda to shop and eat meatballs.

Sure, maybe the cities in the north need to work a little bit harder, and I like the fact that they're working together instead of competing with each other, but if you only follow southern-based media you can easily get the impression that whole Norrbotten is in a huge crisis and that everything is as in "Jägarna" which is not the case at all. Some cities, Like Piteå, Boden and Kalix have had problems with a little too high numbers of unemployment for people under 25, but Kiruna, Gällivare/Malmberget and Pajala have the opposite problem - they have so many jobs available that they don't know where the people moving there will live.

The main "problem" with employment/unemployment in Norrbotten is that 95% of the available jobs is in construction, working in a mine, paper industry, nurse in a hospital or so on. People with other ambitions either move to Luleå, Umeå or further down south.

What is now a really gray concrete parking lot will be made into a hill with parkings underneath and inside it, and a sort of park with apartments around it. Construction starts in autumn 2012.

That's correct, haven't heard that much about new apartments though, but found this article http://www.nsd.se/nyheter/tornedalen/artikel.aspx?ArticleId=6176045. I get the feeling that Pajala is a little more careful with building lots of new apartments and fear that they will not be needed in ten or twenty years time. That's just what I suspect.

One of the biggest and most interesting things in whole Sweden right now is the moving of Kiruna. It's pretty much a whole city that needs to be moved so that the work in the mines can continue. Well, not the whole city, but it's a pretty big thing.

People from Kiruna have started to call the city "The Swedish Klondike", since the people working in the mines make very good money.
Kiruna has lots of interesting architecture, interesting in this case can be both good and bad :)

The design isn't decided yet, but this is one of the suggestions they've been working with. 250 new apartments close to the mine will be finished in 2015 latest, together with 100 apartments "downtown".

Saw that someone was curious about this one so I'm posting a little more info about it. Construction hasn't started, it's just a plan so far, but the forecast is pretty positive. The old water tower is of course already built :) The height of the water tower is 47 metres, and the height of the new tower will be 60 metres.
The idea is that living room and kitchen will be located in the old tower and in the new tower there will be bedroom, bathroom and, it goes without saying, a sauna. The area between the towers will have room for a passage between the towers, balconys and the elevator.

Background about Haparanda: For those of you not familiar with the area, Haparanda is a small city with 10,000 inhabitants just by the border to Finland. Just on the other side is Torneå, a city with around 25,000 people living in it. Even though that one side is in Sweden and the other is in Finland, it's pretty much one city.

In 2006, IKEA opened in Haparanda and since then the two cities have started to grow. Hotels and apartments are being built, tons of people from the north of Sweden, Finland and even a lot of people from Russia go to Haparanda just for IKEA. Even I find it hard to believe, but statistic shows that more people pass through Haparanda-Torneå every month than Malmö-Köpenhamn. This wasn't the case before 2006.
Some just pass through Haparanda and most of them drives directly to IKEA, shop till they drop and then head straight home, but the local politicians really try to make people stay in Haparanda. They have a pretty good lighting design school in the city which they work pretty closely with, they have built Victoriatorget (picture below) just between Sweden and Finland, a lot of semi-fancy hotels and stores/shopping malls have opened as positive spin-off effects.

Projects/proposals like the water tower and the new arena is projects that hopefully will make more people move to or stay a little longer while in Haparanda.

This is probably one of the stranger ideas in the region, but it has a good chance of being built. The idea is to build a 12 metre high egg, slowly spinning in the middle of Victoriatorget in Haparanda.
The bottom floor should contain a tourist centre/information and such, but the egg itself should be some kind of meeting place for different religions. It sounds pretty much up in the blue, but the man behind the idea is Roger Akelius who is good for somewhere around a billion SEK and have invested million after million in the Cape East Hotel in Haparanda (picture below), and he is willing to fund it all himself. Haven't heard anything about in maybe five-six months, though.

Luleå, Piteå, Sorsele, Storuman and Arjeplog are the places that struggle for a new research and development-center for wind power plants. The picture is taken in Piteå, where the construction of one of the worlds biggest parks will be built, will be finished in 2020.
The research center will be built somewhere in the north, of two reasons. There's far more wind power plants in the north, and the main purpose is to study how the plants work in colder climate.

Luleå (best communications), Piteå (highest number of power plants) and Arjeplog (already have a sort of similar thing where BMW, Mercedes and other car manufacturers test their new models in cold and snow weather) is probably the most likely candidates.

I'm not 100% on the number, but I've heard that it should be around 2000 people all-in-all and that recruitment will start after summer 2012. There's also some talk about opening new mines in Kiruna and Jokkmokk.

The bottom picture really shows pretty much how the central parts of Piteå looks. If you would continue after reaching the top you would find a sawmill, further to the left there's a hospital and a school, below there's lots of water with smaller boats and on the shore there's some pretty dull office buildings and a sports facility and from the mid-right you would find downtown Piteå with stores/cafes and such.

This was released the same day as some pretty positive news for some cities in Norrboten. They didn't grow by much, but the good thing is that they're not declining.

Plans for cultural house in Piteå

Tomas Wallsten have plans to build a house for culture, library and art spaces in downtown Piteå. The cultural house will be next to the museum. Tomas hope that construction will start autumn 2013. It will have a wooden facade to better melt into the surrounding buildings.

Lots of new companys companys wants to build offices in Aurorum Science Park in Luleå. You can see a pretty clear before and after Facebook-effect. A new huge building will be built, unfortunately no renders or any information even about the company yet, but will post it as soon as it's official. There's rumours around that it's either Facebooks service center/customer service or something Apple-related. We'll see.

Vasallen planerar ett "hoppbackehus" med 10 våningar. Nyligen gick de ut med att mycket av fastigheten skulle kunna bli kontor istället för bostäder. Eller både och. I den ursprungliga planen ingår mellan 10 och 15 parhus placerade på taket av höghusen.

HSB vill bygga två tiovåningshus med 55 exklusiva lägenheter. Länsstyrelsen underkände planerna och kommunen måste göra ett nytt detaljplaneprogram. Enligt HSB är en trolig byggstart 2014.

Akelius vill bygga tre punkthus med 180 lägenheter fördelade på hus med 12, 14 respektive 16 våningar. Akelius vill även bygga på två våningar på det gröna huset på Varvet. Miljönämnden har uttryckt sig skeptiskt till bygget och de boende i de befintliga husen har protesterat.

Galären vill bygga ett 12-våningshus precis bredvid Akelius gröna hus. 90 lägenheter samt en matbutik ingår i planerna.

Norrporten äger marken, nu parkeringsplats, nedanför länsstyrelsen och lantmäteriet. De har inte presenterat några planer för området men kommunen vill bostäder där.

The theme of the interior this year is called "Beam Me Up" and it was created by a design studio "Pinpin Studio" from Sweden.

In “Beam Me Up”, Pinpin Studio sought to combine an artistic approach with playfulness and humor. They wanted visitors to feel as if they were part of a story – that something is going on around them and that they are involved. The world becomes a stage, and the visitor is transformed into an actor.
Upon entering the room, visitors are transported to a sci-fi scene where four UFOs hover over the trees surrounding Torne River in northern Sweden (just below the Northern Lights). The room invites visitors to participate not only through its visual design, but also by letting them partially enter one of the beams to get beamed up, or by lying down on the illuminated hovering bed.

Kv Hunden in central Luleå has been topped out, they have just started with cladding. I will try to get a picture of the progress the next week or so!

HSB wants to teardown an old building in central Luleå and replace it with a seven story building. The building will house 30 large apartments, stores at the ground level and have an underground parking lot. If everything goes to plan we might see this building build by 2016 :)

There is a picture of the building standing there at the moment, i think Subway used to be located in that building.

Found another render of the proposed building in central Luleå i wrote about in the last post. In the last post i wrote that the building might be built by 2016, but that is the estimate of when the project might start being built.
