In terms of population or skyline or as a city?

For me by skyline:
Brisbane
GC
Townsville
Cairns
Sunshine Coast
Toowoomba
Rockhampton (well it hasn't really got one has it)

But you can't really compare Bris & GC to the rest can you.

Gold Coast Has more scrapers than Brissy, but for impact Brissy wins.

Brisbane ( Only will get better with Vision)
GC (Q1, Circle on Cav and Soul may change this thou)
Townsville ( Salt Shaker is one of a Kind)
Cairns
Sunshine Coast
Toowoomba
Ipswich( Should Add Ipswich, its skyline is far better than Rockys)
Rockhampton

Townsville ( Salt Shaker is one of a Kind)

It's intersting you call it that, usually its the Sugar Shaker but I have heard it called the Pepper Shaker. I suppose its up it ones imagination as to what is should dispense. Also has been refered to as the Giant Lipstick (the top is a good resemblance anyway).

I think its nickname(s) are so prevelant because its name changes every couple of years - it has been SGIO Building, Hotel Townsville, Townsville Travelodge, Centra Townsville and Holiday Inn as far as I know.

Wasn't it called Townsville International Hotel at one stage? Or am i imagining it?

4. Sunshine Coast - 150k
5. Cairns - 130k
6.Toowooma - 100k
7. Mackay - 70k
8. Rockhampton - 60k

Wezza, Holiday Inn was known as TSV International, If you go to the pool. It is enscribed at the bottom, Townsville International.

Rockhampton does have a bit of a Skyline. It has a 9 story Hotel by the River and a 7 story Mercure Inn Building. There is also another 8 story one somewhere.

120k for Toowoomba thou

Danubis
November 8th, 2004, 03:14 AM
yeah, toowoomba is a very sprawed city... they count the population of the city with the original boundries drawn up when toowoomba first became a city 100 years ago... like boundry road to the west and stenner street to the south... and as people in toowoomba would know the boundries of the actual city go to drayton - this isnt satelite city talk, its actual continual urbanitity... so the figure of 120k that people throw around about toowoomba is most likely closer to the actual figure instead of the official 100k

Joe
November 8th, 2004, 04:46 AM
Wow Danubis, you read my mind. I could not have put it any better. I still for the life of me cannont understand why they do not update the city boundary's in Toowoomba. Toowoomba extends at least another 1km past the boundry road limit and the area past stenner street towards drayton 10,000 people live there easily .

5. Cairns - 130k
6.Toowooma - 100k
7. Mackay - 70k
8. Rockhampton - 60k

Where the hell did u get those stats?
its more like.
1. Brisbane - 1.7m
2. GC - 480k
3. Sunshine Coast - 260k
4. Townsville - 155k
5. Cairns - 130k
6.Toowooma - 120k

8. Rockhampton - 60k

But if it it was in order of places of to live i would put Gold coast between Mackay and Rocky cause its crap! I lived in Mackay for 1 year and Gold Coast for 20 and i like Mackay better than GC.
Now im on the Sunshine Coast and it beats em both :)

I've gotta say that coming from south I am slightly confused where the Sunshine Coast is?

It's like the Central Coast of NSW, no real boundaries.

So where is the Sunshine Coast? It's time QLDers start NAMING CITIES not building suburbs along the SE coast and naming large suburbs...mmm...Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast.

Sunshine Coast is just a rip off of Gold Coast, which I personally should became the skyscraper city Oz.

I thought Queensland was CALLED the Sunshine State, so why would they locally name a region, and then the rest of the nation catches on calling it the Sunshine Coast, but none of really know where it is?!

Blend
November 8th, 2004, 03:13 PM
everyone knows where it is. It starts at Bribie island and goes up to like nambour.

And i dont know but i think sunshine coast was around before or at the smae time as the Gold Coast, the GC just grew faster, so u cant call it a rip-off.

sunshine coast is not a bunch of suburbs either, its a bunch of towns which joined together. (Maroochydoore, Noosa etc)

ShayPlan
November 8th, 2004, 03:18 PM
would I be correct in saying that they trying to either take some population growth away from Brisbane in the future or to try and become another GC?

Blend
November 8th, 2004, 03:24 PM
not really. They have strict height limits, so it could never become another GC. they are trying to avoid that.. Sunshine coast seems more upmarket, compared to the touristy GC.

I dunno about taking bris population. i dont believe that they are. Many brisbaners move there, and vice versa.. but thats what its always like in SEQ ppl move about from Sunshine, Brisbane and GC constantly.

What I don't want to see is SE Qld becoming a 3-in-1 city of the future. That is all SC-Bris-GC becoming one vast city, and taking growth from northern cities. It is becoming widely aware that QLD population would overtake that of Victoria's sometime after 2026. With that in mind, and the climate QLD has to offer I think building more cities (populations over 250 000) towards Cape York should be considered. More than halfway there with Cairns, Townsville, Toowoomba (I think). I'd like to see Rockhampton become the next followed by Mackay, Hervey Bay City (including Maryborough), and a few inland cities.
By only allowing growth in one region seems a waste, think of the skylines that these cities would have!? :)

^ Because its better than the gold coast. :okay:

I Lived on the Gold coast for 20 years and whilst it might be a great place for interstate people to visit as it MUST BE SEEN, its not the best place to live, I recently moved to the Sunshine Coast and its so much classier, clean and beautifull than the GC could ever be, were not going to be flooded with ugly shit buildings overunning the place but awesome smaller highrises that are architecturally stunning :)

Sorry im not exactly sure how they measure it but i lived there for a short while and everyone said 100k it was even written on pamphlets and stuff for election.

You're actually right on 100k being on pamplets etc for elections and that, Mackay region is at around 100k (Bowen, Whitsundays-Airlie Beach-Cannonvale-Shute Harbour, Sarina etc). Mackay is about 70k now actually, The ABS is from last census.

Mackay City Council - 78,263

That would be about right - Mackay's urban area is probably not at 100k yet - its more like 75k. The suburbs spread so far and wide in that city who knows where to draw the line.
Mackay is growing fast too - much faster than Rockhampton.

Toowoomba spreads inito about 4 other shires so its population is probably correct. Its the only city in Australia where the ABS only looks at the central city for population and does not take into account suburbs.

Interestingly if Caboolture and Ipswich were independant cities the the list would look more like this:

1. Brisbane - 1.5m
2. GC - 480k
3. Sunshine Coast - 260k
4. Townsville - 155k
5. Ipswich - 150k
6. Cairns - 130k
7. Toowooma - 120k
8. Caboolture - 100k
9. Mackay - 100k
10. Rockhampton - 60k

Others cities that are big include:
Bundaburg
Hervey Bay
Gladstone
Gympie

For the Gold Coast, they only take into account the GCCC area. :)

These suggestions that we should be movingmore people into areas other than South-East Queensland sounds a bit too much like Desley Boyle for my likeing.

Yes but there are 70,000 people who live in Tweed - mostly in the urban area that flows into NSW from SEQ. As an urban area GC should include urban Tweed in its population count - but not Beenleigh.

I wouldn't say that - there is currently 5.7 BILLION dollars worth of construction happening in Tweed Shire.
That is huge - even when compared to Sydney and SEQ its a massive amount of construction.

Yeah, Airlie Beach is one of the best places I've ever been to. They have had some schoolies stuff recently and that and a new marina project similar to the one in Mackay is being built down there. I've never really met or heard anyone born in Airlie Before, but yet again, it's been there for a while, but it's just thrived itself with Tourism.
